COREY TERRELL SIMMONS

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A 35-year-old Las Vegas man is behind bars in the death of his girlfriend's child.

Las Vegas police say Cory Terrell Simmons has been arrested on suspicion of murder by child abuse after the toddler died just before midnight Thursday.

Police say they responded to reports of a child in medical distress about 10:30 p.m. Thursday at a residence in northeast Las Vegas. The toddler was taken to University Medical Center's pediatric trauma center and pronounced dead.

Investigators say Simmons was the only caregiver home at the time of the incident. Two other children were asleep in the home and are now in Child Protective Services custody.

I have to wonder where the hell mom was while he was beating baby. If she knew about his being a sexual predator then she should be in the cell next to him facing murder charges as well as neglect on each child she left in this monster's care. I'm so sick of reading about these wee ones being left with monsters while mom is out partying or whoring around. It doesn't take rocket science to know if he's hurt a child previously its NOT a good idea to leave your children with him.
CPS please please keep those other children in protective custody until its determined mom's whereabouts during this murder. Please investigate thoroughly so we don't end up with more dead children.

RIP Little one. I'm so sorry you suffered. Rest with God and play with the angels. NO one can ever harm you again.

Mom was at work as a security guard according to the article. When you click the link it won't take you directly to the story you'll have to click on the story when the link takes you to the news site who reported the story. I think the first thing all women should ask there potential bed mates is have you ever been convicted or charged of a violent crime. Whether it be a child whoman or another grown man its something you need to know. Hell even go down to the police station and ask I'm sure they could tell you something. Reading the DD has just made me overly cautious when it comes to penises and babies.

in no way am I trying to blame the mom when I say this...the woman was at work, had nothing to do with this but... : Background check and history of violence or not, when are women going to stop placing the trust of their children's lives on these penises? Of course, not all boyfriends of single mothers are pieces of shit. However, most of these women who leave their children with the penis rather than family or a babysitter are trying to find a quick replacement for a Daddy and it always ends badly.

A man accused of killing his girlfriend's baby son last week asked officers to shoot him and pleaded for the death penalty during an interview with detectives.

Cory Simmons, 35, told Las Vegas police he pressed down on the throat of the 2-year-old for several minutes until the boy vomited and began convulsing, according to his arrest report. Simmons said he then panicked and called 911.

The boy, Orlando Morris, later died at University Medical Center.

In one disturbing moment detailed in the report, which was released Tuesday, emergency room doctors said the baby had been bleeding from his rectum, which "did not look right," the report said.

Officers found a sex toy in the boy's crib, which was in the master bedroom of Simmons' house at 6349 Rose Tree Lane in northeast Las Vegas.

Simmons, a registered sex offender, also was the caregiver of his girlfriend's two underage daughters. Both girls were at home during the incident. Simmons told police he didn't touch any of the children.

He was forced to register after being convicted of sexually assaulting a minor four years ago in Illinois. He had also been arrested on a murder charge in Illinois in 2003, but that charge was dismissed, the report said.

Orlando's mother, Denisha Jackson, told police she met Simmons through an online dating website late last year. Simmons first stayed with the family for three weeks in November and permanently moved into the home in January.

Jackson told police she worked a night shift and typically left her three children with Simmons. She was at work about 10:20 p.m. Thursday when Simmons called paramedics.

Simmons first told police he never touched Orlando. He took Orlando from the girls' room about 10 p.m. after the boy started crying, the report said.

He said he gave Orlando some chocolate milk to calm him and then took the boy to his bedroom. Orlando then began to choke on the milk.

Doctors told police the boy's injuries weren't consistent with Simmons' milk story, however.

As Simmons told the story he was shaking uncontrollably and wouldn't look detectives in the eye, the report said.

Later during the interview at police headquarters on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Simmons told detectives he wanted an attorney and stopped speaking.

But he later called detectives back into the interview room, waived his right to an attorney and admitted that he had pushed on the boy's neck.

Simmons "was unable" to explain to police why he took the boy from the girls' bedroom into his own room, the report said.

Several times he asked Detective Dean Raetz to shoot him and said he wanted the death penalty if he was arrested, the report said.

Neighbors say that mother should've known she was welcoming a potential danger into the household.

That's because 35-year-old Cory Simmons is a registered sex offender in the state of Illinois. A simple search reveals he was convicted of criminal sex abuse of a teenage victim in 2008.

Neighbors on Rose Tree Lane question why he was ever left alone with the toddler and his two sisters.

"If you're a single mom and you're going to go as far as let someone live in your home with your children, know them. Look them up on the internet," said neighbor Amy Brown.

"When I found out about this, I went to my girls and said, this is why mommy doesn't let you play outside, because scary people look just like everybody else," added neighbor Amy Brown.

"It's hideous. It's horrible. The mom should've been protecting her child more," said neighbor Tasha Kilburn.

Documents allege that investigators found a purple dildo inside the toddler's crib.

Police say he denied touching Morris or the other children in a sexual manner.

A man accused of killing his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son in February could face up to 10 years in prison after reaching a plea agreement in the case.

Cory Terrell Simmons, 35, entered an Alford plea during his arraignment Friday in Clark County District Court. Under an Alford plea, Simmons maintains his innocence while acknowledging the jury would have evidence to convict

him, likely resulting in a harsher penalty.

Deputy Public Defender Dan Silverstein, representing Simmons, and prosecutors have agreed on a recommended prison sentence of two to five years for Simmons. His sentencing was scheduled for Nov. 14.

But Arraignment Court Hearing Master Melisa de la Garza told Simmons he still could face one to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Simmons has been held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center since his arrest Feb. 16.

On Feb. 16, Metro Police officers responded to the 6300 block of Rose Tree Lane in northeast Las Vegas to investigate reports of a toddler in medical distress.

Simmons, the sole caregiver at the time, initially told detectives the toddler, Orlando Morris, started choking while drinking milk, but doctors said Simmons’ version of events wasn’t consistent with their medical assessment. The boy died after transport to University Medical Center.

When detectives later interviewed Simmons, he admitted to putting his right hand on the boy’s throat and pressing down for “two to three minutes,” to quiet him, according to his arrest report. Orlando began throwing up and his arms jerked by his sides when Simmons released him, the report states.
