A North Carolina mother is accused of murdering her 9-year-old son inside a hotel room, according to police.

Crystal M. Matthews, 35, of Fayetteville, faces charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse in connection to the death of Zamarie Chance.

Police said a guest called 911 after hearing a physical disturbance. Arriving officers found the child unresponsive. He was taken to a hospital and died.

Investigators believe the suspect assaulted the victim in the room, causing fatal blunt force trauma injuries to the child.

A 9-year-old boy found dead in a hotel room last year was beaten and asphyxiated before his death, according to an autopsy report.

Officers with the Fayetteville Police Department responded to the Fairfield Inn and Suites on Oct. 21 and found Zamarie Chance unresponsive in a third floor hotel room.

According to the autopsy report, the hotel room was messy, with stains on the floor near the boy’s body and blood and urine on the bedsheets

According to the autopsy, Chance had multiple cuts and bruises on nearly every part of his body, including his head and neck, as well as deep scalp hemorrhages.

The autopsy states that while the head injuries would have been enough to explain Chance’s death, injuries to his neck and face indicate that the cause of death was asphyxiation, either by strangulation, smothering or compression of the torso.

A mother will serve at least 12 years in prison for beating and suffocating her 9-year-old son to death in a Fayetteville motel room two years ago.

Crystal M. Matthews pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the Oct. 21, 2017 death of Zamarie Chance. Superior Court Judge Jim Ammons sentenced her to between 144 and 185 months in prison.

Fayetteville police responding to a 911 call about a disturbance at the Fairfield Inn and found Zamarie unresponsive in the room.

According to an autopsy report, the hotel room was messy, with stains on the floor near the boy’s body and blood and urine on the bedsheets.

The boy had multiple cuts and bruises on nearly every part of his body, including his head and neck, as well as deep scalp hemorrhages, the report stated. But injuries to his neck and face indicated that the cause of death was asphyxiation, either by strangulation, smothering or compression of the torso, the report stated.

Zamarie's father and other family members were dressed in black in court as they listened to the sentencing. They previously said they wanted Matthews to spend the rest of her life in prison, but they declined to comment as they left the courthouse.

Ammons said he accepted the Matthews' plea – she had been charged with first-degree murder and felony child abuse – to give the family some closure in the case. He ordered Matthews to continue receiving mental health treatment in prison.

Zamarie is only worth 12 years to the justice system and $25,000 to his father who is probably just as big a piece of shit as the mother.
