Sherin Mathews: Richardson Toddler Still Missing As Parents Hire Separate Attorneys

RICHARDSON, Texas -- (KXAN) -- The mother and father of a 3-year-old Richardson girl who is still missing have hired separate attorneys.

An attorney representing the girl’s mother says the woman is “distraught” over her daughter’s disappearance, reports KXAS. Attorney Kent Starr told reporters the parents have two attorneys to avoid any potential conflict of interest.

An Amber Alert for Sherin Matthews was issued on Saturday, Oct. 7, after her parents reported her missing. However, that Amber Alert was discontinued on Monday afternoon because authorities said there was no new information concerning her disappearance.

Sherin’s father, Wesley Matthews, 37, was arrested the same day the child was reported missing. An arrest affidavit reveals Mathews ordered Sherin to stand next to a tree near their home in the Dallas suburb of Richardson about 3 a.m. Saturday because she refused to drink her milk. When he went outside about 15 minutes later to check on her, she was gone. However, police say the father didn’t report the child missing until five hours later.

The father is currently charged with abandoning or endangering a child.

[doublepost=1507989585,1507922813][/doublepost]Dozens Attend Community Prayer for Missing 3-Year-Old Sherin Mathews

Saturday marks one week since 3-year-old Sherin Mathews disappeared in Richardson.

Her father, Wesley Mathews, says he sent her to stand by a tree early Saturday morning and hasn't seen her since.

As investigators search frantically to find Sherin, a community came together to pray.

Dozens of people from different faiths and walks of life attended a prayer service by the tree where Sherin reportedly disappeared.

"It's heartbreaking. This is a 3-year-old little girl. We don't know where she is, where she could be," said Gauthami Vemula, a child welfare consultant and aunt to a one- and four-year -old.

Candles, stuffed animals and handwritten notes now mark the spot where Sherin's father says he last saw her.

It is steps away from the Mathews home. Her parents have yet to make a public plea for help finding Sherin.

It's the reason so many felt compelled to attend Friday's prayer, to give a voice to the voiceless and to stand shoulder-to-shoulder for Sharin.

Investigators are focusing on a 15-mile radius surrounding the family home as they search for Sherin. It is located in the 900 block of Sunningdale Drive.

Police are urging anyone with surveillance cameras to check for video of the family's 2013 maroon Acura MDX.

Police Want To Know Why A Couple’s SUV Left Home After Their Toddler Went Missing At 3 a.m.

The disappearance of Sherin Mathews, 3, has sounded strange to some ever since it came to light a week ago.

Wesley Mathews told police he’d sent his daughter — in her pajamas at 3 a.m. on Oct. 7 — to stand alone beneath a tree across an alley from their home in Richardson, Tex.

This, apparently, was her punishment for refusing to drink milk.

When Mathews looked for Sherin 15 minutes later, he told police, she was gone.

Not yet too worried, the father said, he then did a load of laundry, according to a police affidavit. He waited until after sunrise before he reported the disappearance to police, who have since revealed stranger details yet.

Detectives and FBI agents searched Mathews’s house midweek, and subsequently announced that someone left in the family’s SUV about 4 a.m. on the day she disappeared, and returned home within the hour.

Mathews was arrested on child abandonment and endangerment charges the same day Sherin went missing but has since been released on bond and stopped cooperating with detectives, according to CBS 11.

Police said Sherin’s mother was asleep during the incident and she has not been charged, but the station reported that she’s also stopped cooperating. Child Protective Services, which had unspecified contact with the family before the disappearance, has since removed Sherin’s older sister from the home.

Neither parent were seen at a large vigil for the girl Friday, Fox 4 reported.

The same day, a tip led police to scour a cemetery near the edge of Richardson for signs of Sherin.

Born in India, the girl has passed from ward to ward for much of her short life.

She was abandoned by her birth parents before her second birthday, according to the Times of India, and rescued by adoption workers.

While in the agency’s custody, the Times reported, Sherin would wait for hours on the stairs until a worker she called “nani” arrived, then run and hug the woman.

The Mathewses adopted her last year, bringing her to their quiet neighborhood of mostly South Asian families outside Dallas, where Sherin met her new sister, who is one year older.

By age 3, Sherin weighed only 22 pounds, according to Richardson police. Her father told detectives she had an eating disorder, and the couple tried to feed her whenever she was awake.

In the small hours of last Saturday morning, Mathews told police, he couldn’t get her to drink her meal.

The tree to which he banished her stood about 100 feet from the house, according to a police affidavit — behind a fence and across from an alley in which coyotes sometimes roam.

Yet neither police nor volunteers who have spent a week looking for Sherin have reported any signs that the girl wandered off into the neighborhood or had some mishap in the alley.

“A lot of the story doesn’t make sense,” said Bob Morse, who lives a few houses away. He said he happened to be lighting a barbecue grill in his yard early Saturday morning, and saw and heard nothing.

Besides her eating disorder, police said, Sherin has a disability that makes it hard for her to communicate.

Officials issued an Amber Alert for Sherin after she disappeared, but they suspended it for lack of information.

Candles and flowers now mark the spot where Sherin was last said to have been seen, according to CBS-11. In India, her grandparents told News Minute that her parents loved her and awaited her return.

But in North Dallas, Fox 4 reported, police made an extensive search of a cemetery near the Richardson border on Friday.

A tip had led them there, but nothing was found.

I would love to believe that by some miracle that Sherin's brief story would have a happy ending at this juncture but being a realist it isn't what we are going to get.

I wonder how she was killed ..
Someone, the dad mostly likely, drove off at 4 am, buried her, then drove home .. :(

Oh yeah, he killed her, let's hope the police don't bungle this and find enough evidence to send him to prison forever.
thinking molested and sold either way they need to be pulling out his fingernails until they find out and I don't buy the mothers story either as she had to have known of some abuse

Yeah, the same thing @cubby noticed, mom knows more than she's saying, or they'd present a united front.

For the egregious offense of not drinking her milk ....

Wesley Mathews puts his adopted child outside at 3 AM and directed her to stand alone behind some fencing bordering the property, under a tree and across an ally approximately 100 yards away where he himself has witnessed coyotes on the prowl.

When Mathews checks on the child 15 minutes later, lo and behold he says there was no sign of the 3 year old. Mathews does not alert his wife or law enforcement to the fact that Sherin has gone missing in the wee hours of the morning. Instead he apparently had the urge to do a load of laundry and at some point take a ride in the family vehicle during the 5 hours or so he waited before he bothered to contact authorities.

I don't blame mom for getting a lawyer. Any person with half a functioning brain cell would lawyer up and distance themselves under these circumstances.

They have another child who was put into DFCS care. The mom will need an attorney to try and get that child back. She also can't pretend to be united with the dad, even if she truly feels that way, or she hurts the chance of getting her other daughter back.

It could also just be that he was assigned a criminal public defender, being arrested. He's been arraigned so he had representation in court.

She wouldn't be provided those services free since she doesn't have any charges.

Just an idea.

Have you seen their house? I have doubts he got a public defender lol There's a house on the same street up for sale for over $420k. Another a few blocks away going for $550k.

Indeed I have. As well as the 2013 Acura.

But if he's the breadwinner, she stays at home, (hypothetically) he could very easily say his income's either now gone or most likely in jeopardy based on the type of charge and the speculation swirling.

Any major company would run from him quick, fast and in a hurry to protect themselves.

Maybe they're one of those that have zero equity or anything to liquidate and live way above their means.

Again. I was just throwing it out there, idk where their money comes from.

I'm of the belief that mom just thinks he's guilty so she's protecting herself, honestly.

Police asking for footage in search of missing Texas girl http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4980804/Police-asking-footage-search-missing-Texas-girl.html
'We would like to thank those who have provided tips and video up to this point,' Richardson police said on their Facebook page. 'We are diligently working our way through all of the material.

'We continue to request businesses and residents within a 30-minute drive of the 900 block of Sunningdale to check your video systems to see if there is any footage that may have captured a 2013 maroon Acura MDX SUV on Saturday, October 7th, between 4AM and 5AM.

'It is important this check be conducted before a system overwrite may take place. Thank you once again for all of the assistance.'

The justice system typically doesn't care if you lost your job because you were arrested(which is actually illegal until hes convicted).

They generally go off your income statement along with any assets you have. They have 3 cars, 2 of which carry fairly big price tags and a house worth more then the average house in that city. They've gone on trips around the world to adopt a baby. Foreign baby adoptions are extremely pricey because of the paperwork needed in both countries and you are required to make multiple trips to that country. They will force them to sell stuff or remortgage the house before ever assigning a public defender.

And lets not forget he bonded out in less than 24 hours on a $250,000 bond. This alone says he doesn't have a public defender. Texas doesn't have income requirements for public defenders. They go by a "can you pay for your bail? then you pay for your lawyer" philosophy.

There are people who've lost their homes and been bankrupted from having to pay for lawyers because they make to much for public defenders but not enough to pull lawyers fees from the couch cushions.

I'm with you that mom is protecting herself, but if she really didnt have anything to do with it I see no reason why she shouldn't be.

RICHARDSON -- Drones are being used to help law enforcement officers in the search for a missing 3-year-old from Richardson.
police_1508257605221_11423943_ver1.0.JPG

The Johnson County Sheriff's Officer and Mansfield Police Department were seen helping Richardson PD with the search for Sherin Mathews in an undisclosed location Tuesday morning.

"We're always hopeful that we can find her alive," an officer said. "But time is our enemy."
[....]
Mathews was arrested and charged with child endangerment, but has since bonded out. He's currently wearing an ankle monitor.

Richardson PD said Tuesday that it will be conducting "several searches" based on leads and information gathered by officers. Some "articles" were found in a field and creek in Richardson, but it's not clear if they are actually evidence at this time, police said.

They added that they will continue to perform "specific searches" like this as tips come in. They searched the same area Friday but want to make sure they didn't miss anything.
[....]
Mathews' parents both remain "uncooperative," according to RPD. Child Protective Services took custody of their other daughter, age 4, shortly after Wesley Mathews was arrested.

Neighbors have left prayers, balloons, and teddy bears in a makeshift memorial for Sherin behind the family's home.

A Facebook event titled Sherin Mathews Search Party was scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday near Richland College.
[....]

I am hoping the other little girl can tell them something and that the body is found and enough intact to charge him/them for everything imaginable

Mathews by his own admission told LE about seeing coyotes in the very same place he left a vulnerable 3 year old to stand alone in the middle of the night. One way or another he is going to do time.

Both adoptive parents are now refusing to cooperate with authorities. Like Psychokitty, at this point I just hope that they find the remains in time to discover Sherin's cause of death.

[doublepost=1508422788,1508277320][/doublepost]Blanket, Washer and Dryer, 45 Other Items Seized From Missing Child's Richardson Home

FBI Investigators trying to figure out what happened to missing 3-year-old Sherin Mathews have seized a long list of items from the family's Richardson home.

Nearly four dozen items were taken from the family's home by investigators, the FBI confirmed Wednesday including computers, the contents of a vacuum cleaner, the family’s washer and dryer, a pink blanket, mobile phones and DNA swabs from each of the family's three vehicles.

Search warrant returns obtained by FOX 4 indicate that between Oct. 8 and Oct.13 police took DNA swabs, grass, debris and receipts from three vehicles that belong to 3-year-old Sherin Mathews’ adoptive parents. They also took a flash drive, seat belt and radio equipment from the family’s SUV.

Items taken from the Mathews home include a vacuum and trash bags, hair fibers, blankets and sheets, shoes, multiple cellphones and laptops, financial and identification records, several wooden spoons and the family’s washer and dryer.
[....]
While they have not said where, police say there are still active searches happening on Wednesday. They’ve focused on areas south of the family’s Richardson home.

Just before noon on Wednesday, a family member or friend showed up at the home and stayed for about an hour before backing out of the garage and driving off. It was the first time we've seen anyone coming or going from this home in days.

The vehicle he was driving was one of three belonging to the Mathews family that police seized and searched Court records show the Lexus SUV had DNA swabs, dried grass and debris taken from it.

But it's another family vehicle that police have given the most attention — the Acura MDX that police say was driven away from the home for one hour on the morning of Sherin’s disappearance.

Court records show a navigation unit likely from the Acura was sent to the FBI lab in Quantico, Virginia.

“Even if you didn't plug in an address and say make a right or a left, it’s still recording where you were going,” West said. “And it's also going to pinpoint where you stopped.”

A Dallas County constable was at the Mathews home Wednesday morning trying to serve papers, but no one answered the door. FOX 4 has learned they were serving papers to the family regarding the couple’s 4-year-old biological daughter that CPS took into custody.

What happened to missing Texas girl forced to stand in alley? Answers may rest in family SUV

DALLAS - The disappearance of three-year-old Sherin Mathews is posing plenty of problems for Richardson Police and public, but Dallas-based lawyer Chad Ruback says one thing is a guarantee.

"Mr. Mathews is going to be convicted. Mr. Mathews is going to spend some time in prison for what he did," Ruback told KDAF on Monday. "The only question is how long he's going to be behind bars and what he's convicted of."

"He has stupidly admitted that he knew there were coyotes out in the area where he left her," Ruback said, referencing the arrest affidavit.

According to Ruback, leaving a child in imminent danger could mean up to 20 years for Wesley Mathews, but what about three-year-old Sherin, a little girl described as only three-feet-tall, 22 pounds, and with developmental problems?

What if she's still missing in a week, a month, or even a year?

We saw that scenario play out with Saginaw's Opal Jennings in 1999. The six-year-old's remains were found by accident five years later.

"It's going to be tough to find her," Ruback said. "If they haven't found her in the first few days, it's not going to be easy."

According to Ruback, one piece of evidence will be key to learning the truth and possibly finding Sherin Mathews. The family SUV that went missing about an hour after Sherin did. Her dad said he noticed she was gone at 3:15 AM. Police say that vehicle was gone from roughly 4:00 AM until 5:00 AM.

"They are going to find out where that SUV was, and when they find out where it was, likely that's going to give them a clue as to what happened to young Sherin," he said.

With the area canvassed and the Mathews family no longer cooperating with Police, it might be our best hope.

@Satanica's link it said that the 4 year old CPS took custody of is the Mathew's biological daughter. I was wondering about that.

I just saw on facebook that Sini Mathews has a hearing on Monday to try to regain custody of the couples 4 year old. How likely is that in these circumstances with both parents refusing to cooperate with authorities in Sherin's investigation?

I would think not very likely but I've been fooled before, kids given back only to be killed/go missing days/weeks later.

ETA: Tho, as in some other cases, the biological is not usually in as much danger as the adopted child.

What was Wesley Mathews thinking? Did he not think that putting a 3 year old outside alone at 3 AM and having that child go missing would be seen as a reasonable act as punishment for not drinking all her milk? Not that I believe that to be the actual events that took place. Something far more insidious had taken place that necessitated a load of laundry to be immediately done in the middle of the night and a SUV ride in the predawn hours.

What I see in the pictures of Sherin, is a beautiful little girl, tho she may be small for her age, she is not malnourished at all, she looks happy and chubby and just beautiful.

She pissed him off some kind of way, maybe by getting up at 3am, but I'm with @Victoria, he did not put her outside because she wouldn't drink her milk, something made him mad enough to kill her and then claim that's what he did, because what he is claiming, putting her outside at the mercy of the coyotes must be tame in comparison to what he really did.

Wtf was this idiot thinking, the cops would buy his story and be on the lookout for man-eating coyote's?

The car's navigation will be the key to finding her it seems. Maybe the poor kid wet the bed or something and brought on the psycho's wrath. Wonder what the load of laundry was.

U.S. Indian Embassy 'Actively Involved' in Sherin Mathews Case

The Indian Embassy in Houston says they are monitoring developments in the Sherin Mathews missing person case in Richardson.

"We are closely monitoring Sherin Mathews case. We have establisbed the contact with the community and authorities," a spokesperson for The Embassy, based in Houston, said in a written statement.

The Minister of External Affairs for Government of India, Sushma Swaraj, said in a tweet Thursday, "We are deeply concerned about the missing child. Indian Embassy in U.S. is actively involved and they keep me informed."

Sherin Mathews was adopted from India by the Mathews family last year.

She disappeared from her Richardson home on Oct. 7 and has not been found. Authorities placed Wesley and Sini Mathews' 4-year-old biological daughter in foster care shortly after Sherin was reported missing. Sini Mathews has a hearing Monday to try to regain custody of her child.

Search warrants released Wednesday revealed a washer and dryer were among 47 items seized from the Mathews home last week. Richardson police said they continue to examine evidence and comb for clues into Sherin's disappearance.

I know what a sleepy child looks like but in my opinion Sherin looks drugged in this image. Of course it may just be medication that Sherin was prescribed having to do with her disabilities that has her knocked back.

I'm getting very curious to know the circumstances that brought CPS into the picture to open a case/investigate happy family at some earlier date.

Yes, I know that I'm obsessed with Sherin's case but look at that precious little face. Also as a child I knew a little something about being dragged out of bed in the middle of the night and it wasn't to drink a glass of milk. Neither was Sherin.

Idk. I have many candid photos of me looking stoned when I wasn't.
Still. With this case, anything is possible.

Looking stoned?

Yeah. Nope. I have to disagree here.

Sorry. But one picture and the assumption that she was being fed drugs is borderline tin foil hat material for me.

Obviously awful things were/did happen. We all think that. Is it based on that photo alone? No. It's the circumstances.

But to look at one pic and claim to know tired face vs drugged. Nah. I simply cannot buy into that.
