Steven L. Winans, of 27 Ottawa Trail in Sheboygan, was charged Monday with felony burglary of a building or dwelling and felony possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the alleged theft in April at the Indian Meadows Trailer Park.
According to the criminal complaint, Winans spoke with his deceased neighbor’s family after he passed away, and later made three trips into his neighbor’s trailer. He targeted guns first, then went after anything else that could be of value, including beer steins, beer memorabilia, a box of coins and a sword. Winans confessed to taking Xanax at the time, wore latex gloves during the burglary, and filed off the serial numbers off of a handgun he had taken from the neighbor’s trailer.
The deceased neighbor’s family did notice that there were about 13 long guns and five pistol’s missing from the trailer. Most of the firearms had been passed down through the family, some possibly from World War II. After a search of Winans’ home, officers found at least 10 long guns hidden behind a clothes in a hallway closet.
