The search continues for a deadly cobra that escaped from an enclosure at the home of its owner in Ocala, said the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

The owner called the commission late Monday to let officials know that his 2-foot-long suphan cobra had escaped.
An FWC investigator, Ocala police and Marion County Fire Rescue couldn't find the reptile, the commission said Tuesday. Authorities then alerted nearby residents.

The snake's owner has been licensed to have the cobra since May 2016, said Robert Klepper, spokesman for the law enforcement division of the FWC. He also owns a Gaboon viper and an African bush viper, Klepper said.
The FWC requires the rooms where venomous reptiles are kept to be escape-proof. Investigators will be looking into whether the owner violated any regulations.

"Public safety is the number one concern," Klepper said. "We wanted to emphasize that this is a venomous snake and a dangerous animal and should not be approached."

Jeff Corwin, a celebrity wildlife expert and conservationist, said a cobra's venom is in the top tier of all animal venoms.
If someone were to be bitten by the escaped cobra, they would need to get to the hospital as fast as they could and be treated with the appropriate anti-venom, he said.

Thankfully, Corwin said, the cobra is probably going to find a spot far away from people and stay there. "The likelihood that anyone is going to be bitten by this snake is very, very low."

Yeah I agree, Marion county Florida (wherever in the hell that is) is waaaaay too close to Thomaston Georgia, where cobras are concerned, anyway.

What kind of moron keeps 1 of the most poisonous snakes on earth as a...what?...a pet? They don't play fetch, they don't sit in your lap or give you snuggles; and they sure as hell don't purr or lick your face...UGH!
They are only one cut above the Australian brown snake. (Everything in Australia wants to kill you).
I can deal with cute, emerald green grass snakes...all 5 inches of them...but some psychotic reptile? PULEEZE I was married to one for 8 hideous years.

Don't worry, it's only two feet long. It'll probably just slither out of your toilet or spring out of an air conditioning duct. :) Y'all may want to keep a flute handy so you can hypnotize it!

the African bush is probably worse but it is a toss up as all three are highly poisonous ad the moron and others like him don't have a right to them and haven't gone through the loops they should to have dangerous or exotic pets. That is a big issues in Florida including the poor boa constrictors that are now all over the everglades and become a nuisance animals because idiots got them them then released them in the wild. I have heard the same with piranhas in Texas lakes

I have a friend who keeps snakes, she used to put pictures all over Facebook of her current favorite. But I'm like @Prettypink513, no way, no how, fuck that shit, I ain't having no snakes in my house.
