When Alaskan teen David Grunwald didn't return home last Sunday night, his family immediately thought something was wrong.

And when his 1995 Ford Bronco was discovered abandoned and torched on a rural trail several hours later, panic set in.
[....]
David was last seen dropping off his girlfriend, with whom he had spent the day, on Sunday, November 13 around 6:30 p.m. at her father's home in Palmer. The 16-year-old then called his mother saying he had plans to stop by a friend's house and might not be home to make the agreed-upon 9:00 p.m. curfew. But he told her he wouldn't be more than 20 minutes late.

The friend never saw David. And David never returned home. His mother reported him missing around 11:45 p.m.

The next day, David's Bronco was discovered on a rough trail popular with four-wheelers on Bald Mountain Ridge, roughly a 20-minute drive from his family's home. The car was so badly burned, metal pieces had fallen off and no material was left inside. No remains were found in or around the vehicle, according to police. The rural area surrounding the site was searched, but David was nowhere to be found.

On Monday Megan Peters, spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers, told Dateline there have been no updates to the case. Although no official searches are being held at this time, in an effort to establish a more solid timeline of the David's movements, authorities are seeking anyone who may have seen the teen or his Bronco being driven after 7:00 p.m. that Sunday evening

For David's loved ones, it's an unimaginable situation in which to find themselves.

"We are desperate for any information to locate David. This is a living nightmare," Cheri Ruiz, David's aunt, told Dateline. "We need him home. We need to locate him and help him."

David, a junior at the Mat-Su Career and Technical High School, is described as an all-America teen with a close-knit group of friends. The teen, who comes from a military family, has aspirations to become a pilot and possibly join the military himself someday. There were no obvious signs that anything was bothering him in his life.

"I'm not seeing any signs or red flags in this case," Paradise told Dateline. "It very well could be a case of wrong place, wrong time, wrong people."

More than 300 volunteers, many active-duty military personal or National Guard members, met up Saturday to search and hang fliers, family members said. Because of the rough terrain and with temperatures dipping into the teens overnight, officials are asking for volunteers not to head out on their own to searches.

Paradise, who helped organize and oversee the search effort this weekend, told Dateline they are not releasing much information regarding the areas her organization and law enforcement are focusing on, so as not to jeopardize the investigation in any way.

She is also encouraging anyone who may have information in the case to call in, and to not be afraid to talk with authorities. There is now a third-party anonymous tip line anyone with information can call or text to that will be sent to police. An expert, who has previously worked with the FBI, flew in late last night, and Paradise hopes answers will be found in the next few days.
[....]
David Grunwald is described as 6' tall, weighing 150 lbs. with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing an orange North Face jacket, jeans and moccasin-style shoes.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to call the Alaska State Troopers at (907) 352-5401 or Private Investigator Brenda Paradise at (281) 642-7299. You can also call or text the anonymous tip line for the case at (907) 290-8999.

I think it's easy for anyone to imagine the terror of a missing child, even if they're not parents. I think this situation is even more horrifying because of the evidence so far being tremendously alarming. If he just disappeared, it's bad enough, but at least the slim hope that they could have just decided to take off by themselves or even in a car accident where they are not able to get help yet may allow some chance of existing during this impossible time. But this... well it's not good in any way. I will hope for a miracle and a safe return but the vehicle being so badly burned is obviously a bad trail.

They need searchers in horse back.

Horses can cover way more ground, and the rider has a better view. plus its warmer for the searcher.

It seems to me that an accelerant was used to burn his vehicle. David's vehicle was found only twenty minutes away from his family's home. Where did the friend live he was going to visit in conjuncture with this site? Has his cell phone been pinged? What was his relationship like with the father of his girlfriend...who were the last to see him alive? So many questions!! Were there shoe prints around the vehicle? Recent tire tracks? Are they looking deep enough into the woods around that area? I hope they call in the FBI for help.

I'm sure authorities already know the answer to or are currently lookin into all these things.

Seems a bit odd to me that no effort was made to hide the vehicle or make it look like a crash. Was this just a dumb teen who wanted to escape/run off/suicide but didn't know exactaly how to best go about making himself dissappear or cover his tracks, a lazy killer, or was the truck burned solely to destroy evidence of a crime?

The killer looks like a real douchebag.

"Brenda Paradise, a private investigator with the non-profit Guardian Search and Investigations, said that out of the 425 missing persons cases she’s worked on over seven years, Grunwald’s case sticks out.

“I never, ever thought I would see such dark evil in small town Alaska,” she said. “Knowing what happened to this boy, it’s time to clean up this town. It’s time to take out the trash. I don’t want the death of David to go in vain. This isn’t over. This is just the beginning. Now it’s time for justice for Grunwald.”

Media says more are involved, more arrests likely. I find it curious why no one else has been charged yet. Is it a situation where there's sooooo many other douchers who could be part of it or played SOME role that it's taking authorities days to hash out exactly who to bust and for what? Weird considering the verbiage used is that investigators have identified others who are part of this.

The facebook of the guy is fun. Looks like a bunch of people took screenshots of some more troubling shit before his scumbag family could sanitize it, and have yet to put the profile on private. It's a free for all and it's pretty fun. Lot of dumbass white suburban teenage gangbanger shit on there, accusations towards teenage skank bimbos about wanting to play the gang life and being involved with drugs.

One of the deleted, but hilariously screenshotted and reposted comments, is a little back nad forth between friends and what appears to be family member of the killer, where a hick alaskan moron named Myler(the fuck kind of name is that? Almandinger says, "Erick killed a friend for fun..."

Haven't read it in an article, but in the comments section of one of em i came across somebody said that 13 other people were involved, either directly with the murder or knew what happened. No one came forward until an 11 grand reward was put up.
[doublepost=1480848459,1480846828][/doublepost]Clara Bennetts facebook is fun too. Sweet pic of a message exchange where another worthless alaskan trash bimbo says she thinks they just killed someone.

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) Alaska State Troopers said human remains believed to be those of missing teenager David Grunwald were found on Friday near Palmer.

Grunwald was reported missing November 13th.

According to an AST dispatch, the remains were found at about 2 p.m. in the Knik River Road area.

Troopers said the remains have been sent to the Office of the Medical Examiner for confirmation of the identity and cause of death.

A 16 year old teenager was arrested following the investigation.

Troopers said Erick Almandinger of Palmer is being charged as an adult for Murder in the First Degree and Kidnapping.

"Others involved in this incident have been identified but have not been charged as of yet," AST said.

AST is asking for the public's help in locating surveillance video containing footage of Grunwald or his Ford Bronco with the license plate JFM910.

The Bronco has a dark blue body with a thin tan stripe running along the side and matching trim.

Troopers are asking residents with surveillance cameras set up either at home or from their businesses in the Palmer/Wasilla area to review recorded footage from 11/13/2016 from 6 p.m. through 11/14/2016 at 11 a.m

Anyone with footage depicting Grunwald or the Bronco is asked to call AST at 907-352-5401.

Troopers said the investigation is still ongoing.

Sad that such evil exists and roars its ugly head when least expected. So many lives changed and destroyed forever.

Damn. I had the feeling that the situation was bad from the start, but I'm still sad. The photos of David are so cute and heartwarming that I feel invested more than usual. Any crime makes me angry and upset, and violent crime is an automatic trigger for me, but there was something about David that had me hoping that it was all something different.

I'm always amazed at the numbers of people who know details of crimes like this and don't come forward. It's one thing to know someone has been involved in something like robbery, and not coming forward. But if ANYONE is hurt, the idea that there are so many who know and don't come forward is sickening. In this case, where the little fuckwad family member was commenting on facebook is double-disgusting. I agree with the investigator quoted as saying the area needs its trash gathered up and thrown out. Let shit rot and the piles just keep growing.

They made four more arrests and I have a feeling they are not done yet.

http://www.ktuu.com/content/news/Tw...ng-and-tampering-with-evidence-405718125.html

Dominic Johnson, 16 of Wasilla, is charged with murder in the first degree, kidnapping, two counts of murder in the second degree and tampering with evidence.

Bradley Terrigin-Renfro, 16 of Wasilla, is charged with murder in the first degree, kidnapping, two counts of murder in the second degree and tampering with evidence.

Austin Barrett, 19 of Palmer, is charged with murder in the first degree, kidnapping and two counts of murder in the second degree.

Devin Peterson, 18 of Wasilla, is charged with three counts of tampering with evidence and hindering prosecution in the first degree.

Devin Peterson's page is wide open. There's quite a show in the comments section of the latest post.

It'll be sad when they cut a deal with one of these scumbags. I'm thinking Devin Peterson is the one who will get the deal, if he hasn't gotten it already. ONly one not charged with murder.

http://www.ktuu.com/content/news/Ch...-gunpoint-until-police-arrived-385086191.html

Looks like these asswipes have been criminals a while. The entire family of the Peterson douche are vile criminal trash. Wonder why this stuff hasn't been mentioned in all these other news articles? Perhaps out of respect for the gov't? THey don't wanna make authorities look bad. Why were these guys not in jail, were charges dropped, bail set low, were they awaiting trial when they killed this dumbass victim who thought it was a good idea to hang out with known criminals?

A woman who identified herself to KTUU as the mother of Damien and Devin Peterson expressed frustration over the case saying that her younger son had earlier violated probation and should have been back behind bars at the time the crime occurred.

“I’m his mother, I don’t want my kids in jail,” Alanah Peterson said in a phone interview. “But (Devin) should have been. Because there, he would have been able to get counseling and they could have found out what was going on.”

It's not my fault or my childs fault, it's the systems fault for not locking him up when they should have and not giving him counseling! What a disgusting vile bitch. fuck this family.

Alaska is so full of trash, def one of the most vile states.

Devin Peterson facebook is open!

Wonder if this bill played a role.

Holy shit never knew Alaska is one of the softest on crime states in AMerica, guess being that close to Canada will pussify your entire gov't and culture.

The night of the disappearance

The investigator's affidavit provides the first public account of the hours leading up to Grunwald's death.

Almandinger said Grunwald came to his house on Esty Drive in Palmer on Nov. 13 "to drink and smoke" in a camper trailer in the yard, according to the affidavit.

At one point, Almandinger left the trailer and went into the house. He said a friend identified only as "D.J." in the charging document messaged him and asked him to bring a gun back to the trailer, according to the affidavit.

"Almandinger said he brought a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun to the trailer and handed it to D.J., at which time D.J. bludgeoned D.G. with the pistol," Wegrzyn wrote.

Investigators found evidence of blood spatter inside the trailer after obtaining a search warrant, the affidavit said.

They pulled over and walked about 200 feet into the trees, according to the document.

"Almandinger admitted he went with D.J. as they escorted D.G. into the woods and acknowledged that D.G. was pleading for his life as they walked," the investigator wrote.

Almandinger said D.J. killed Grunwald, according to the affidavit. He later changed his story and identified the shooter as another teen identified in charging documents only as "A.B."

Almandinger also said after the shooting he and D.J. went to another friend's house and asked for advice, according to the affidavit. He said he decided to destroy the evidence, so the pair got some gasoline and drove the Bronco to a trail up Bald Mountain Ridge, off Sitze Road, and burned it, the affidavit says. The two caught a cab ride back to Palmer.

They tried to destroy the bloody evidence in the camper by burning a carpet and applying bleach, according to the document. Almandinger said he then stayed in a friend's shed for several days.

The only motive for the killing indicated by Almandinger, who Wegrzyn said showed little remorse during the interview, was that "D.G. had smoked all his weed," the sergeant wrote. "He said they didn't get any money."

'Almandinger admitted he went with D.J. as they escorted D.G. into the woods and acknowledged that D.G. was pleading for his life as they walked.'

That admission chilled me to my very core. It's not hard for me to imagine the wooded area backlit by the moon, the crunch of twigs, nettle and undergrowth as they walked the 200 feet or so, their breath captured in vaporous puffs. David Grunwald's fear a growing terror with every step they took away from the road into the woods as he pled for his life.

David’s remains were discovered on Dec. 2, according to an Alaska State Troopers news release. The same day, 16-year-old Erick Almandinger allegedly confessed to involvement in the killing, saying he was a friend of David’s, according to the state troopers. He was charged with murder in the first degree, kidnapping, murder in the second degree and evidence tampering. He has been charged as an adult.

Almandinger allegedly told investigators David came over to hang out, drink and smoke with two friends when things turned violent.

“The only motive that Almandinger indicated was present during the event was that had smoked all his weed,” court documents state.

On Friday, four additional teens were charged in connection with David’s kidnapping and murder, bringing the number of teens charged to five.

Devin Peterson, 18, Austin Barrett, 19, and two minor teens were all taken into custody for allegedly playing a role in David’s death, according to a news release from the Alaska State Troopers obtained by PEOPLE.

Peterson is charged with evidence tampering and hindering prosecution in the first degree. Barrett is charged with murder in the first degree, kidnapping, and murder in the second degree. The two youngest suspects, both 16, are charged with murder in the first degree, kidnapping, murder in the second degree, and evidence tampering. It is unclear if the two minor suspects will be charged as adults.

Peterson, Barrett, Almandinger and the two minor teens are scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon, Palmer County court officials have told PEOPLE. Information about their attorneys was not immediately available.

Family Seeking the Death Penalty
In an interview with KTVA, David’s parents called his death “unconscionable” and said Alaska should consider implementing the death penalty, which has not existed in Alaska since it became a state in 1959.

“My son doesn’t get to breathe anymore. He’s gone,” Edie Grunwald told the station. “These kids — or these people — they get to breathe.”

Victoria didn’t comment on the Grunwald’s wishes but says she has faith in the prosecution.

“ was taken from us in an unimaginable horrible way,” she tells PEOPLE. “There will be justice.”

He says the only motive was that David "smoked all of his weed." What a little pack of vicious, idiotic, worthless specimens. I was wondering what the motive could have been. I did not infer from any of the articles that David was carrying around any large amount of cash, and obviously they burned most of the other evidence that could have tempted such skanky vermin with the Bronco.

I still am interested in how these confessions will alter the "motive," because it's mentioned a couple of times that David was a friend, and while I can see such idiots behaving so selfishlessly to really have such a ridiculous motive, I find it difficult to believe that this was the primary factor in the choice to do this. He texted someone else to bring a gun, so it was obviously premeditated, even if the premeditation was only from the point of David's arrival to the gathering and the fuck texting. It's still obviously a very conscious plan and choice.

The others that went along both during the crime and afterward in helping him attempt to cover up the fact none of them deserve any right to freedom were thankfully just as stupid as the nasty rat who did the killing. Their utter lack of competency will hopefully give enough evidence to do SOMETHING resembling justice to all involved before, during, and after.

I cannot begin to imagine how David's parents are feeling. The utter lack of control over this situation and the very real possibility that these kids will all be granted more mercy than deserved would be too devastating. Losing your child in any way is something I can't even breathe if I attempt to consider it, and the rage I would have would consume anything left from that stark loss if the loss was a choice made by someone else.

This past year has been extremely difficult for me, and one of the worst things I have ever endured is losing both of my dogs wihtin 6 months. I've been through hell and back again, and survived so much shit I could probably produce at least 6 Lifetime movies. But losing my dogs was the worst thing yet. I had no control, and I loved those beasts and considered them often my truly best friends. They were part of my family and my heart is broken. The most difficult part is in the last couple weeks for both of them, we had them in and out of vets, attempting to help them. I felt so much rage against every vet and anyone who attempted to question me why I would even bother at ALL to save an animal, that I had to consciously restrain myself to NOT physically attack anyone who I thought could help but refused because of money or because they would not allow me to determine the value of my friends.

The grief I felt and feel are so terrifying vast and the anger/rage in being helpless to help my loved ones is a shadow to what I'd feel if I was helpless against my daughter being harmed and then being unable to exact the devastation against someone who had any part in stealing her away or hurting her. I've always known I could easily protect her with my very life and every resource, never pausing to sympathize a bit. I looked into her face the first time I held her and I recognize the fact that I could become anything, regardless of the generally nice person I am.

It does not surprise me to hear them calling for the death penalty. I hope that they get it, but I don't believe that they will. It is generally more often decided to provide mercy to undeserving scum than to provide justice for the outrageous liberties they have taken in hurting innocents. My heart is broken for his parents, and I will still keep hoping that somehow karma is going to work the way it should for once.

One of five teenagers who allegedly murdered an Alaskan 16-year-old is accused of saying 'what are you going to do?' to the parents of the victim as he left court.

Bradley Renfro, 16, appeared to address the parents of murdered teen David Grunwald as he was escorted out of a courtroom in Palmer, Alaska on Tuesday.

Witnesses in the courtroom claim Renfro cocked his head as he walked past Ben and Edie Grunwald and said 'What are you gonna do?... Do something'.

'It was extremely difficult to be in the same room with the five who brutalized and murdered our son. We felt violated and nauseous. It appeared they were smirking with a gang gang smugness about them,' Mr Grunwald said in a statement.

Private investigator Luke Smith, who was sitting behind the Grunwald family, told Alaska Dispatch News that Renfro also gestured with his hands in what appeared to be a physical challenge before he was led out.

Renfro's parents claim that was not the case and said he was trying to talk to his own parents who were sitting behind the Grunwald family.

'He has no disrespect for the Grunwalds, I swear to God,' his mother Brittney Smith said. 'I want justice for David as well. I'm just sorry for everybody involved. But he definitely did not say that to them.'

Renfro was among five teens to enter not guilty pleas over Grunwald's murder.

Grunwald was allegedly beaten, kidnapped and forced to walk into remote woods where he was shot dead execution style on November 13.

His body wasn't found until three weeks later on December 2 following a police investigation.

Erick Almandinger, 16, was the first to be arrested a day after Grunwald's body was found. He was charged with murder and kidnapping.
[…]
Authorities searched the trailer at the back of Almandinger's home on November 29 and investigators reported smelling bleach.

They allegedly found evidence of blood on the floor, walls and in the toilet.

Four other teens, including Renfro, Austin Barrett, 19, Devin Peterson, 18, and Dominic Johnson, 16, were arrested and charged.

Johnson and Renfro have been charged with first and second degree murder and evidence tampering. Barrett was charged with first and second degree murder and kidnapping.

Peterson was charged with three counts of evidence tampering.

Just STFU! Renfro should be happy the victim's parents are nothing like him. Otherwise, maybe his cunt mother would be found dead somewhere soon.

I've read comments on multiple news articles of people saying that this wouldn't have happened if 2 of the boys had been dealt with properly for their previous crimes. I finally found the news article for what they were talking about.

Devin and Austin were involved in a kidnapping and beating in June. For some reason both were walking the streets. Devin's mom cried foul that her sons should have been in jail already - prior to the kidnapping in June, for other offenses they had committed.

This one is messed up. The teens say the man was trying to solicit underage sex. Although they never claim to try and stop him, they just wanted to rob him. There's an investigation on both ends (victim and perps) for this one.
Troopers say Damien Peterson, 19, Devin Peterson, 17, and Austin Barrett, 18, all of Wasilla, assaulted the man Wednesday at a home on the 2800 block of North Jasper Drive. Damien told police that the man had texted with the girl about paying for sex and drove to the Wasilla home, but showed up without any money, according to a trooper affidavit.

About an hour or two later, the man and the girl met again, and the girl led him to the home where Damien Peterson attacked him, Damien told troopers, according to the charges.

[..]

In a separate interview, the Eagle River man told Anchorage police that he had “somehow ended up at” the Wasilla home where he was hit on the back of the head and surrounded by “five or six males with knives.”

The man, who has not been publicly identified, said he was forced by Damien Peterson and two others to take them to his Eagle River home where he was to retrieve money and credit cards.

Damien told troopers that he escorted the man into the home. Inside, the man pulled an unloaded handgun from his dresser and held Damien at gunpoint, the alleged victim told police.

[..]

A woman who identified herself to KTUU as the mother of Damien and Devin Peterson expressed frustration over the case saying that her younger son had earlier violated probation and should have been back behind bars at the time the crime occurred.

Damien Peterson is charged with first-degree robbery, kidnapping and second-degree assault. Devin Peterson and Barrett face kidnapping charges.

Erick's family is playing like they didn't suspect a thing, but they knew he was violent. His ex-girlfriend's mother has come forward and said she had to take a restraining order out on him. His father also has multiple domestic abuse charges against him.

Palmer mother Gena Miracle remembers learning her daughter was dating Almandinger. She said she didn’t like it.

“I even spoke with [his mother] and said you know, ‘My daughter is grounded. I know our kids are dating, that’s fine, but she’s grounded, so Erick needs to not come to my house,’ and within 24 hours later, at 3 o’clock in the morning, he was in my house, downstairs,” she recalled.

Miracle said her daughter was not without fault in continuing the relationship, but Almandinger was angry and controlling. He would threaten to harm her daughter, and on two occasions he did.

“The school counselor even told her that he has a scary obsession with her,” Miracle said.

She said a 20-day restraining order against Almandinger put an end to the relationship in July. At the time, it was a relief, but now she says it could have saved her daughter’s life.

i would love to punch this woman right in the mouth ... I hate parents like this.
He needed counselling ... its all the systems fault. Wrong ... its her fault ... she raised a
criminal, a child with respect for NOTHING. Putting right out there that SHE doesn't know whats going on ... She should be ashamed as all fuck for even uttering those words at all. My kids mind because they know, I know exactly what is going on. This woman is a failure ...her mom card should be revoked forever.

As much as I agree with these statements, on a more personal level of contemplation, I'd add a few considerations from the other hand.

It is unusual to find parents in this sort of story being so publicly agreeable that their kid is in any way a blight of humanity. It sounds like she has had a long history of trying to figure out how to stop her child from being this horrid.

Yes, we are in agreement that help should have been given or something, but it makes me Ronnie about something I found out with my own daughter a few years ago.

Mine stayed acting up at the usual age of a 15ish. I never worried about this level of asshole, thank God, but I had a lot of concern & despair.

I quickly found out that short of a much more emergent situation or a million spare dollars, we were without any chance of true help. We are blessed with outstanding insurance & far above average income, but without full proof of direct need via suicide or homicide documentation, we'd not be covered for the expense of initial evaluation & treatment for prevention. The costs of doing this without insurance were prohibitive but we were willing. Unfortunately we had no options even paying cash for a good inpatient evaluation to prevent future catastrophe because facilities in our affordable ranges still only accepted referrals, regardless of payment options. Voluntary options out of state were all impossible.

Luckily we found what we needed. My daughter turned 18 in August, graduating high school and is currently living with family out of state preparing to start college and is learning to live the way we all learn.

So I kind of see why she may be seeking to think someone should have stepped in, and I am surprised she at least has apparently always been able to see he is a monster. And I think regardless of what our children do, we will always love them and of course always want the best for them.

As someone who is not his mother, however, this boy is a monster who has lost rights to mercy.

I haven't mentioned this because I have no sources to supply, but people from Palmer who know those involved are saying the boys do meth..and they get it from their meth head mother.

It might have some validity because Devin was the only to receive the option of bail, and his bail stipulations aren't the usual ones:

Peterson's bail was set at $100,000 and the requirement of a third-party custodian.
There's a picture of her near the bottom of that link(and some more of her babble), and she doesn't look like a meth head per say but there has to be a reason the courts want him separated if released. Meth or not, sounds like she's a shitty parent.

Ugh. Yeah, details that fill out the method head profile do pretty much negate any kind of sympathy I may have for the possible lesser victims of criminals, those who genuinely love the assholes.

I do still say at least she does not claim her shitty spawn is innocent.

Despite any of the posts I make to point out that the families of horrible people are victims of the crime as well, I cannot stress enough that understanding the reasons one may WISH they did not have to see the loved one suffer does NOT mean that I think mercy is deserved. Instead, my views on violent criminal justice will likely always be to support harsher punishment. Violent crime needs to be focused less on rehab & more on direct consequences to both punish and protect society. Less jail time for nonviolent offenses and even abolishment of many areas we currently sink time & resources around, ie marijuana criminalization, and divert those funds to violence prevention.

These people are truly proof that people can and do make choice to do harm to society & therefore must be removed from society. Less that that is simply aiding & abetting future crime.

A man involved in the 2016 execution-style killing of a teenager in 2016 near Anchorage was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

Dominic Johnson was sentenced for first-degree murder with 20 years suspended. Johnson got another 20 years for kidnapping, assault and other charges, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

Johnson and three others were convicted in the assault and execution of 16-year-old David Grunwald near the Knik River. All four defendants were teens at the time of Grunwald’s death and were tried as adults.

Defendant Austin Barrett reached a plea deal and was sentenced to 45 years in November.

Juries have also convicted Erick Almandinger and Bradley Renfro of first-degree murder in Grunwald’s death. They are awaiting sentencing, which was delayed by the pandemic.

On the night of the killing, Grunwald smoked marijuana in a trailer behind Almandinger’s home in Palmer. Johnson, then 16, messaged Almandinger to bring a heavy gun. Grunwald was locked in a bathroom then pistol-whipped in the dark when he emerged, prosecutors said.

The defendants then used Grunwald’s vehicle to take him to the river. From there, he was walked into the woods, where he was shot and killed, prosecutors said. His body was not found for 19 days. Johnson later led Alaska State Troopers to the general area where the body was located.

Prosecutors presented evidence at trial that showed the four defendants partied together after the murder.

“There was something off in all four of these young people,” said Heath, who has retired from the bench but continues to preside over the Grunwald cases. Of Johnson’s desire to commit violence, the judge said: “I don’t know what motivated him to do that but it was not normal. And it was flat-out scary.”
Johnson apologized to Grunwald’s parents, Ben and Edie, before the sentence was handed down even though they had left the courtroom.

“We’re not staying,” Ben Grunwald said. “I don’t want to hear it, any lies, any BS. I don’t want to hear a word out of his mouth.”

Johnson said he was sorry for the pain he caused the family. “I wish every day I could go back and do things differently,” he said.

Johnson’s attorney, Lyle Stohler, sought leniency in sentencing. He said Johnson didn’t know his father and was raised by his grandmother until he was 12. He then moved in with his mother but was kicked out of her house four years later.
Grunwald’s family testified to the pain of their loss.

Her son spent that same Thanksgiving Day “out there,” Edie Grunwald told Johnson during Wednesday’s hearing, referring to the remote spot near the Knik River. “Frostbit to the ground.”
Johnson’s sentencing parameters fell under Senate Bill 91, the controversial criminal justice reform bill that was repealed and replaced in 2019. He’ll be eligible for mandatory parole after 66 years.

He’ll be eligible for discretionary parole after 36 years if he behaves like a model prisoner, Heath said, adding that provision is how he’s addressing any potential for rehabilitation.

“Mr. Johnson, I hope you take advantage of the opportunity to salvage something in your life,” he said.

Austin Barrett read an apology.

Then Judge Gregory Heath accepted the plea deal, sentencing him to 45 years to serve.

A nearly 2-hour interview between Barrett and Alaska State Troopers recorded on Dec. 7, 2016 — a day before the case was presented to a grand jury — was played in court months ago, as Howard argued it should be suppressed.

During the interview, Barrett is heard asking investigators, “Hypothetically speaking, if I was going to let you guys know anything, am I gonna go to jail for life, even though I didn’t do it?”

Barrett, emotional at times, also told them he was concerned about what the world will think of him and said he didn’t want his name to be in the news.

“I just don’t want to look like a bad person,” he said, later adding, “I just don’t want my name involved. I want to be able to get a job and be a normal person.”

Howard successfully argued that troopers violated Barrett’s right to remain silent and that the interview was obtained illegally.

Without Barrett’s own statements and considering the fact that he did not have a cell phone with him at the time of the murder, Kalytiak said taking the case to trial would be a gamble, something both parties decided to avoid.

Barrett pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder and agreed to a 45-year sentence followed by 10 years of probation.
After serving 15 years of his sentence, defense attorney Craig Howard said his client will be eligible to apply for discretionary parole. Considering credit for time already served, that will happen 11 years from now.

Howard said he promised Barrett he will show up to his parole board hearing in person to advocate for him, a promise he’s never made to a client before.

“He’s not getting a great deal,” said Howard. “I myself, I’m trying to save a young man’s life so that he can get out there and maybe try to do it again and salvage something and be an asset to society.”

Howard presented a theory that David Grunwald “imprinted” on Erick Almandinger, leading to his introduction to a world much different than the one he was raised in.

Howard said representing Barrett in the case has caused him psychic damage and a photo of David Grunwald will live in his mind forever. He said he needs closure and hopes to one day visit David Grunwald’s grave.

“There’s my one request, and if [the Grundwalds] don’t want me to do that, I can fully understand,” he said.
When it came time for Barrett to speak, Kalytiak told the judge that Edie and Ben Grunwald are interested in knowing the truth, but not hearing an apology.

They chose to leave the room before Barrett read his statement.
“I would like to personally apologize to Mr. And Mrs. Grunwald,” he began. “I’m sorry, and apologize. I pray for healing, and I hope and ask that you please forgive me. I also apologize to any and all of David’s family and friends for your pain and sorrow, as well as any law enforcement, volunteers and court related people who’ve had to personally work or be affected by all this. I’m truly sorry and pray for all of you will be able to get through this as well.”

Barrett apologized to his own family, to the community of Alaska, and to anyone who has PTSD as a result of the murder.

“Please forgive me. I regret what has happened and realize it was completely wrong. This tragedy should never have happened,” he said.

He went on to cite a Bible verse and said he would be open to communicating with the Grunwald family if they wanted to talk to him.

“I’ll keep you in my prayer,” said Barrett.

Erick Almandinger was sentenced to s99 years for the kidnapping and murder of his schoolmate, 16-year-old David Grunwald.

In May 2018, Almandinger was convicted by a Palmer jury of nine charges, including murder, kidnapping, and arson. Almandinger was 16 at the time of the crimes.
Almandinger supplied the pistol used by the teens to beat Grunwald. On Nov. 13, 2016, Grunwald was pistol whipped in a camper behind Almandinger’s home. After the beating, Grunwald was driven for nearly half an hour in his own vehicle, walked into the woods near the Knik River, and executed. Grunwald’s vehicle was discovered burned, miles away near the Talkeetna Mountains. Grunwald’s body was found nineteen days later after defendant Dominic Johnson led law enforcement to the area.
During sentencing, retired Palmer Superior Court Judge Gregory Heath found Almandinger’s crimes were truly horrific and committed for no apparent reason. Judge Heath found that Grunwald was driven for nearly half an hour and emotionally tortured. Judge Heath said the crimes warranted a severe sentence reflecting general deterrence, reaffirmation of societal norms, and community condemnation.
Almandinger was sentenced to:
  • 99 years with 20 suspended for 79 years to serve for murder in the first degree
  • Five years for assault in the first degree
  • Thirty years, with twenty suspended, for kidnapping (10 years to serve consecutively)
  • A $2,500 fine for arson
  • Five years for tampering with physical evidence
  • A $2,500 fine for vehicle theft in the first degree

The total composite sentence for Almandinger is 99 years to serve.
Almandinger is the third defendant to be sentenced of the four teenagers who were charged with the November 2016 murder. Dominic Johnson received a sentence of 99 years to serve for first-degree murder, and Austin Barrett received a sentence of 45 years for second-degree murder.

Bradley Renfro was sentenced to a total of 105 years in prison with 30 of those years suspended.
Bradley Renfro, also 16 years old at the time of the killing, was found guilty in 2018 of murder, kidnapping, and arson in Grunwald’s death.
A fifth man, Devin Peterson, reportedly pleaded guilty to hiding the weapon and giving the four teens gas cans to burn Grunwald’s Bronco. He received a 6-year sentence.
