Michael Angelo Goerlich
May 8 2014
A 53-year-old man is in custody and charged with kidnapping after allegedly driving to New York to pick up a 14-year-old girl he'd met on a telephone chat line and bringing her to his home in Landfall,

The girl was found after she called police and disclosed her location.

"When our officers first made contact with her, she was frightened."

Michael Angelo Goerlich, 53, has been charged with two counts of kidnapping and false imprisonment.

The girl was reported missing in Rochester, N.Y., on Sunday, Hutton said.

She called Rochester police

and gave them the Landfall address. Rochester police then called the Washington County sheriff's office, which immediately sent officers.

The girl was taken into protective custody.

Goerlich was arrested on site.

"As we understand it, she and (Goerlich) have had contact with each other over a chat line. Some of that conversation talked about this individual going up to New York to meet her," Hutton said. "We do know that. He did go to New York. He did meet with her. And he did transport her back to his residence in Landfall."

Goerlich and the girl, identified as A.G., made arrangements to meet on Sunday at an intersection in Rochester.

"While in his vehicle they discussed returning to Minnesota," the complaint said. "A.G. stated she did not want to go with him to Minnesota, but did agree to go with him."

While they were driving to Minnesota, the girl's cellphone rang and Goerlich took it and broke it, she reportedly told

They arrived at Goerlich's mobile home about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday and he left shortly after to go to work,

Goerlich's roommate said he woke up about 10:40 a.m. and spoke briefly with the girl. When Goerlich returned from work, the roommate said he asked Goerlich who she was.

"Goerlich informed him that she was a 19-year-old co-worker,"
[...]
"(The roommate) indicated that he did not believe A.G. was 19 years old and Goerlich admitted 'she doesn't look nineteen.' "

Even if the girl left New York with Goerlich of her own volition, she was not legally able to consent because she's a juvenile,

"You can't say 'willingly' because a 14-year-old cannot consent for something like that to occur,"

One of the kidnapping charges against Goerlich stems from his alleged intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and the other from deprivation of parental rights.

The Pioneer Press generally does not identify victims of alleged sexual assault.

He said the investigation is continuing and it's unclear whether Goerlich will be charged with anything else.

Neighbors said that Goerlich, who went by Mike, kept to himself and that no one knew there was a girl in his mobile home.

Things were quiet at his home until police showed up Tuesday, said next-door neighbor Leon Hunter.

Hunter said Goerlich was a delivery driver and that he moved in five or six years ago. Goerlich's family had lived in the home before him, Hunter said.

Minnesota birth records show Goerlich has a 12-year-old daughter. The girl's mother, reached by phone Thursday, declined to comment.

New details have emerged in the case against a Landfall man accused of kidnapping a New York girl, but prosecutors have not added any charges, and the investigation is continuing.

A search warrant affidavit filed in Washington County District Court this month had additional information from investigators' interviews with Michael Angelo Goerlich, 53, and the 14-year-old Rochester, N.Y., girl who was found in his mobile home.

The girl told police Goerlich forced her to come to Minnesota, where he sexually assaulted her
[...]
But Goerlich has not been charged with criminal sexual conduct, nor is it clear that he will be.

Assistant county attorney Fred Fink, who heads the criminal division of the county attorney's office, would say only that the investigation is continuing.
[...]
According to the criminal complaint, the two made plans in advance for Goerlich to drive to New York and pick her up.

But according to the search warrant affidavit filed by Washington County sheriff's investigators, the girl told police Goerlich showed up unannounced and forced her into his truck as she was walking to school.

She said she had never seen Goerlich's picture, so she didn't immediately realize that the man who picked her up was the "Mike" she'd been talking to on the phone over the past year,
[....]
She said the unknown man asked her where the nearest Walmart was,
[...]
"(The girl) said she answered his question and walked away, but the male followed her,"
[...]
"He eventually gets out of his vehicle, which (the girl) described as a pickup truck, hit her in the face, threatened her with a knife and forced (the girl) into the vehicle."

She told police Goerlich drove her to her house so she could get some things before they left town,
[....]
The girl told police that Goerlich broke her cellphone while they were en route to Minnesota and that when they arrived at his home in Landfall, he forced her to participate in sex acts,
[....]
Goerlich denied that he had had sex with her. He said the girl told him she was abused by her family,
[....]
The girl had been reported missing in New York and was discovered May 6 after she called Rochester police and gave them Goerlich's address. Washington County officials placed her in protective custody while arrangements were made to reunite her with family.

One of the kidnapping charges against Goerlich stems from his alleged intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and the other from deprivation of parental rights.

His next court hearing is scheduled for June 5.

On Wednesday, he is scheduled to appear in court for an eviction hearing because the Landfall Housing and Redevelopment Authority is seeking to kick him and his roommate out of their mobile home. The eviction claim accuses Goerlich of violating the crime-free requirements of his lease and of owing two months' rent.
[....]
Goerlich remains in custody at the Washington County Jail. His bail was set at $1 million.

Tack on a few extra years for the ugliness factor. The memory of that disgusting face hovering over her will haunt her for years. She'll also instinctively hate men who wear squared glasses and striped shirts, forever.

A 54-year-old Landfall man is going to prison for driving to New York and kidnapping a 14-year-old girl he met on a chat line.

Michael Angelo Goerlich was sentenced in Washington County District Court last week to 41 months in prison.

Goerlich was charged in May with one count of false imprisonment and two counts of kidnapping — one linked to his alleged intent to commit criminal sexual conduct and the other to deprivation of parental rights.

Goerlich reportedly met the Rochester, N.Y., girl on a telephone chat line in 2013, according to a criminal complaint.
