An administrator at Elysian Charter School in Hoboken was arrested yesterday and charged with the sexual assault of several underage boys, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.

John Mercado, 52, of Jersey City, served as an administrative assistant at the school, according to his LinkedIn profile. The profile lists various duties he performed at the school, including athletic director and middle school guidance counselor.

He had also worked in leagues in Jersey City as a coach.

Mercado allegedly molested seven underage boys, according to the prosecutor’s office. He was charged with multiple accounts of aggravated sexual assault, endangering the welfare of a child, sexual assault by contact, aggravated criminal sexual contact, and child abuse, officials said.

Ugh, more victims.

John Mercado, the longtime Jersey City youth sports coach and teacher who last week was accused of sexually abusing multiple boys over the past three decades, has now been charged with abusing a total of nine boys.

Mercado, 54, of Kennedy Boulevard, who appeared in Central Judicial Processing in Jersey City today on new sex abuse charges, was charged on May 23 with multiple counts of aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault by contact, aggravated criminal sexual contact, endangering the welfare of a child and child abuse, Deputy First Assistant Prosecutor Debra Simon said.

The criminal complaint filed against Mercado the first time he appeared in CJP on May 27 listed five victims. A new complaint released to the Jersey Journal today lists an additional four victims.

A longtime Jersey City youth baseball coach and Hoboken school administrative assistant and athletic director was sentenced to 20 years in a state psychological hospital today for sexually assaulting boys ages 10 to 13 over three decades

“There has to be a statement to the community at large but certainly to you Mr. (John) Mercado,” said Hudson County Superior Court John Young before sentencing the 54-year-old Jersey City man to the maximum possible sentence under the plea deal.

Young said Mercado had betrayed positions of trust which can be so important in determining the direction a child’s life will take, and that his victims “will suffer for the rest of their lives due to your actions.” The judge said it is clear to him that Mercado sought out coaching and teaching positions to make his prey available to him.

In August, Mercado pleaded guilty to five counts of first degree aggravated sexual assault and two counts of second degree sexual assault regarding five victims who were "mostly boys he had coached." The last case occurred between 2004 and 2006, Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Sal Rozzi said.

Young’s sentences on the individual charges totaled more than 100 years but under the plea deal they will be served concurrently. The longest term was 20 years with no chance of parole until after serving 17.

Mercado has been diagnosed as a compulsive and repetitive offender and as such, he can be held in custody even after serving his sentence if he is deemed to still be a threat. Once released, he will subject to Megan's Law guidelines and will be supervised for life.
