A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after human remains were found during the search for a missing Met police officer.

Veteran Westminster PC Gordon Semple, 59, was last seen on 1 April.

On Thursday, police found remains at a flat on the Peabody Estate in Southwark Street, south London, and arrested a 49-year-old at the address.

PC Semple, who had served as a police officer for 30 years, was seen on CCTV in Great Guildford Street at 15:00 BST last Friday. His partner reported him missing later the same evening.

Earlier, the officer, from Greenhithe, Dartford, had a work meeting at the Shard's Shangri-La hotel, which he left at about 12:30 BST.

Scotland Yard's homicide unit joined the search effort for PC Semple, leading to the discovery of the remains at the flat.

Commander Alison Newcomb said the find was a "significant development".

Due to condition of the remains, she said, it would take "some time" to establish a cause of death and carry out formal identification.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after human remains were found in the search for missing police officer Gordon Semple.

Forensics teams continue to scour the flat on the Peabody Estate, off Southwark Street, where the discovery was made on Thursday afternoon.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "We are unable to make formal identification at this stage, but this is devastating news for all those involved in the search for Gordon.

Police divers started trawling the River Thames on Friday as more police units became involved in the search for the anti-social behaviour officer, 59.

Police searched a housing association flat block in Southwark – yards from where Mr Semple was last seen on CCTV – yesterday after residents raised concerns about a “strong smell” coming from an apartment.

A 49-year-old man was arrested after human remains were discovered at one of the flats.

“I heard it was a cleaner who raised the alarm when they went to the flat and there was a strong smell.

“The people who live in the block are quite new, they’re mostly professionals who walk across the bridge to work in the City.”

Another resident said: “It was the caretaker who called the police. Residents had been concerned about the smell. There were lots of scented candles outside.

“But they were suspicious so they raised the alarm and the police came down and the next we know the place was crawling with cops.

Did the Constable disappear on duty?

Met PC Gordon Semple, 59, was last seen on 1 April after leaving a meeting in Southwark, south-east London.

If he didn't, it was immediately after being on duty .......?
[doublepost=1460142912,1460142354][/doublepost]Actually, that link.......

Heather Brown, a resident on the Peabody Estate where the remains were found, said a neighbour and his brother had confronted a man in block E about a "terrible smell" seeping out of the flat, despite scented candles being placed at the front door.

The 55-year-old said: "They just smelled this horrible smell, really.

"The candles had been outside for a few days".

When they knocked on the door to challenge him, the owner claimed he was "just cooking", Mrs Brown said.

Police are believed to have sealed off the rubbish chutes on the estate.

What on earth was he doing to the corpse?

Mr Brizzi is charged with murdering PC Semple at his flat at some time between 1 April and 7 April.

Wearing a grey prison issue tracksuit, he confirmed his name, age and address as he appeared next to a lawyer at Lewisham Police Station.

During the brief hearing, bearded Mr Brizzi told the court: "I'm an Italian citizen but a UK resident."

At one point he raised his hand to interject in proceedings to ask about legal aid.

A crystal meth user murdered a police officer during a sex sessionand attempted to destroy his body using a technique seen on TV show Breaking Bad, a court has heard.

Prosecutors said Italian Stefano Brizzi, 50, tried to dissolve the body of PC Gordon Semple, 59, in a bath of acid.

Crispin Aylett QC, prosecuting, opened the trial telling jurors the case called for "broad minds and strong stomachs".

PC Semple met Mr Brizzi through gay datingapp Grindr and went to the Italian’s house while on duty for "hot, dirty, sleazy" sex on the afternoon of 1 April, the court was told.

The police officer had been in a relationship but was "sexually promiscuous" and used Grindr for "extreme" encounters of "domination, bondage and much else besides", said Mr Aylett.

Mr Brizzi was allegedly in the middle of throttling him when he turned away another man who had arrived for a drug-fuelled sex party.

Over the next few days, neighbours on the Peabody Estate in south London noticed a "revolting smell" coming from Mr Brizzi's flat.
[....]
By 7 April, a resident alerted police, who visited the flat and found Mr Brizzi wearing only sunglasses and underpants.

They also found a bath full of acid with "globules of flesh" floating in it, the court heard.
[....]
I killed him last week. I met him on Grindr and I killed him. Satan told me to."

However, jurors were told that the defendant was not claiming a psychiatric defence and now says PC Semple died accidentally during a "sex game gone wrong".
[....]
Mr Brizzi later told police that PC Semple had invited a number of people to the flat "but they didn't arrive and, when one did arrive, I was right in the middle of strangling Gordon and I said to - he was right there at the door - and I said to him, 'Look, this is not the right time now, people are falling ill and it's a mess'."

After PC Semple's partner failed to get hold of him on his mobile phone, he reported him missing.

The court heard that Mr Brizzi had been a user of crystal meth - referred to as Nutella - which had cost him his job at financial giant Morgan Stanley.
[....]
Mr Brizzi was said to be "obsessed" with the American show Breaking Bad, jurors were told.

Mr Aylett said the main character, chemistry teacher Walter White, produced crystal meth and, after poisoning a rival, dissolved the body in acid.

Mr Brizzi denies murder but has admitted obstructing a coroner by dismembering and disposing of the body.

The case continues.

Thanks for catching my dupe. My mistake was searching for the perp's name instead of the victim's.

To be fair, when the original post went up we didn't know the name of the suspect!

A man may have cooked and eaten parts of a police officer after strangling him in his flat, a court has heard.

Stefano Brizzi is accused of murdering PC George Semple, 59, who he met on the dating app Grindr, before attempting to dispose of the body in an acid bath.

The Old Bailey heard Mr Semple's DNA was found on the blade of a blender, cooking pot and other items in the defendant's kitchen.

Mr Brizzi, 50, from Southwark, south London, denies murder.

Investigators also found there were bite marks on a piece of bone recovered from the kitchen bin at Mr Brizzi's home and evidence that one of Mr Semple's legs had been burnt, the jury was told.

Prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC said: "So, the defendant cannot have confined himself to dismembering Gordon Semple and disposing of his body either by acid in the bath or else in the dustbins.

"Instead, the prosecution suggest it would be open to the jury to find that the defendant cooked part of his body and ate it."

I find this part disturbing. Not because of the content, because lets face it most of us have done stuff that would raise eyebrows, but because usually its the defense slamming the victims reputation. In this case it's the prosecution.

A man who strangled a Metropolitan Police officer before trying to dissolve his body in an acid-filled bath has been jailed for life.

Stefano Brizzi, from south London, admitted dismembering PC Gordon Semple, 59, while high on crystal meth.

The 50-year-old claimed PC Semple died accidentally during a sex game but an Old Bailey jury found him guilty of murder.

He was ordered to serve a minimum of 24 years in jail.

The court heard Brizzi was obsessed with the American TV show Breaking Bad in which the protagonists Walter White and Jesse Pinkman dissolve a rival drug dealer in a bathtub filled with acid.

When police visited Brizzi's flat on the Peabody Estate in south London, he told them how he thought he was "getting away with it" and was planning to finish disposing of the body later that day.

In mitigation, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins QC blamed Brizzi's crystal meth addiction as she accepted the expert evidence.

She said Brizzi had "absolutely no recollection" of it and was "utterly horrified by it".

Chief Crown Prosecutor for London Baljit Ubhey said: "An evil and calculating man, Brizzi lied to the police and then to the court, claiming that Mr Semple's tragic death was caused when a sex game went horribly wrong."

She also paid tribute to how her team dealt with the challenging case, particularly considering the lengths Brizzi had gone to to remove traces of his crime.

A murderer who was jailed for killing a Metropolitan Police officer and trying to dissolve his body in acid has died in prison.

Stefano Brizzi, 51, was sentenced to life in prison in 2016 for murdering PC Gordon Semple and was ordered to serve at least 24 years in jail.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) confirmed Brizzi, an HMP Belmarsh prisoner, died in custody on Sunday.

In a statement the MoJ said: "HMP Belmarsh prisoner Stefano Brizzi died in custody on Sunday.

"As with all deaths in custody there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman."

The MoJ has not indicated a cause of death and said that would be determined by a coroner. No date has been given for an inquest.

Died in custody. Leaves it open to plenty of speculation and imagination. Cardiac arrest due to years of meth abuse? Or murdered like Jeffrey Dahmer was?

The court heard today that Brizzi had placed a leg in a roasting tin in the oven, and traces of PC Semple's DNA were also found on a set of chopsticks.

A bone believed to belong to the PC was found with a suspected bite mark in a kitchen bin, the prosecutor said.

DNA from the alleged victim was found on the blade of a blender, cooking pot, chopping board and grease in the oven of the Italian's kitchen, the Old Bailey heard.

Prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC told jurors: 'So, the defendant cannot have confined himself to dismembering Gordon Semple and disposing of his body either by acid in the bath or else in the dustbins.

'Instead, the prosecution suggest it would be open to the jury to find that the defendant cooked part of his body and ate it.'
