I can't get past the fact that this little girl will never have the experience of falling in love and yes, in lust, with a boy her own age and discovering sex in a mutually loving relationship.

That is a microscopically unimportant consideration compared to the fact that every adult who should have protected her has let her down, she is a 13 yr old mother with a pacemaker and no family to turn to. That's a fact I can't get past.

She prob fervently believes she is in a mutually loving relationship. Her stepfather may be crazy in love with her too. Of course, the sordid s.o.b. could have let that love give him the strength to restrain from SCREWING HER!
I suppose mom put up with it because she needed him to pay the bills?
And a "boy her own age" is not necessarily going to love and respect her whatever her feelings, probably just use her too.
Seems like she was raised by people with no moral compass. Her situation is almost hopeless.

I look at this image of Katherine and it says nothing if not here is baby who now has a baby because of the adults in her life not just using poor judgement but engaged in actual criminal behavior.

Someone should snatch the Mom shirt off of Grannies back I'm presuming she wore in her civil wedding photo at the courthouse. She is certainly culpable in this and squeezing out a few tears will not save her. She served her daughter up to this pedophile.

I am so thankful that Katherine and her infant came through this and appear to be well and safe. She will need mental health professionals to work through just how she was taken advantage of by both her mother and the piece of human excrement she brought into her daughters life of such vulnerable and tender years.
I was just on the way to post those pics. Emphasizing what a LITTLE GIRL Katherine is. Hearbreaking.

@Momzilla

Maybe best case scenario would be a foster home that could take both Katherine & her baby so they could be together, but she could have the support that she's going to need.

This is exactly what needs to happen.
Intense therapy, a super great foster family to help her learn how to care for this baby and no contact with her fucked up family.

Sadly, I doubt all of this will happen.

Little is right. Shes 4'8" and weighs 95 pounds.

Anyone know the back story on the photo? Its in a court room.

I think that court house picture is of when Mr. Derleth adopted her and her twin sister. They also changed their first names and last names to his.

You know your explanation of the adoption process being formalized at the courthouse makes even more sense than the one I offered up as the possible reason why they were gathered there. I totally missed that Katherine was a twin and now am wondering if the twin sister was spared the sexual attentions of this pedophile?

Please don't think me callous, but the twin did not look at all like K, who is a rather pretty child. I am not trying to be mean, but explain why the twin may not have been a target for this pig.

She looks so sad, and so scared.

Sad, scared and so very young. And what a tiny bit of a thing she is too to have gone through a pregnancy and then the delivery of a child at the ripe old age of 13. Poor youngin' as Katherine barely had enough time to put down Barbie before she was picking up baby.

While this whole thing is terrible.

(My great grandparents were married at 12 and 15 and came to America alone when they were pregnant a year later in 1905. They have more than 400 descendants 120 years later.)

Its absolutely repulsive and illegal that she was subject to this abuse.

But I do not believe that her age prohibits her from being a good mother. She should be given the opportunity to raise her son.

You're right that her age alone doesn't mean she won't be a good mother but did your great grandma go on the run from the police with a newborn? Doubtful. She probably squatted in the field had the baby and went back to work (that's what my great gma did).

Her actions and the fact that she doesn't yet understand her relationship with her step father is wrong, speak volumes on how mentally mature she is. She has endangered her own health and the baby's.

120 years ago it was common for people to be married and having children young. Family and social values were very different than they are now. We've helicopter parented for long enough now that people freak out over 11 year olds home for an hour alone, never mind having sex and babies. Every generation we take away more and more of our children's ability to function as young adults. We continue to try and keep them children for as long as possible, making them dependent on adults for far longer than they really need to be.

Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking young parents, I'm one myself. I've been living on my own since 16 and had my first munchkin 3 months after I turned 17. I just don't think this particular girl shows enough mental maturity to put the needs of her baby over her own, which is what parenting really comes down to.

I feel for 13 year old Katherine as she went through the pregnancy with the belief it appears that she would be keeping the baby she was carrying and indeed after her infant sons birth maintained custody of her son. I'm confused as to when Katherine and the newborn were placed with a foster family and the no contact order was put into place. I'm assuming the order was in place prior to the birth.

What a dilemma and how confused and filled with angst this baby who has so recently given birth to her own baby must be. Hormones high and her emotions and thoughts scattered to the four winds as she tries to contemplate an uncertain future. Damn this is sad on so many levels!!

I was molested. It skewed some of my relationships and it damaged my life in lot's of ways

But It didn't stop me from falling in love with Brian in grade eight thru to grade ten.

It was a mutually loving relationship. He wanted to do it and I didn't ... he respected that.

I feel you. I was also assaulted for a number of years as a child and went through some shit times in the relationship department as a teen, but still found young love and I think that despite her own tragedy, Katherine can still experience those things.

I hope you both are right. All I could think was that this beast had forever ruined her chance at a healthy future relationship.

I believe the authorities will do all they can to allow Anna to keep Christopher with the supports they both need in a foster home situation.

UPDATE 9/26/16 @ 6 p.m.
KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Investigators say neighbors keeping their eyes open played a crucial role in helping them apprehend an Amber Alert suspect.

The week-long manhunt ended Saturday in the woods in the Kayford area of eastern Kanawha County.

That's where U.S. Marshals arrested Christopher Derleth, who'd been wanted out of Illinois since last Monday.

His 13-year-old stepdaughter and her 2-week old child were safe.

Faye Jarrell works at a convenience store along Cabin Creek Road. She says a little after noon Saturday, a customer walked in whose face was immediately recognizable.

"As soon as he walked through the door, I said 'Oh my God, that's the guy who kidnapped and they have the Amber Alert for.' "

When she looked out the window, her suspicion was confirmed.

The green van she'd seen in connection with the Amber Alert was parked outside. She says she could see a girl with a hoodie covering her head in the vehicle.

Despite knowing she was talking to a wanted kidnapper, she kept calm.

She says he purchased pop and beer.

"I started to card him since he bought beer to see if he was actually from Illinois, but then I thought that might set him off," she said.

She says he thanked her, and after he left she called 911.

About an hour later, U.S. Marshals found Derleth and the two kids by tents in the woods.

Investigators say they received numerous tips, which helped them ensure the suspect didn't get away.

<3Faye is a retired teachers aid and says it's a blessing knowing she was able to help play a part in making sure the kids were safe.

"I have feelings for kids," she said. "I try to help any kid I can." <3

Derleth declined to be interviewed from the South Central Regional Jail.

His extradition hearing is expected to be held within the next couple days.

Arraignment
DNA is still pending or just not being released.

39-year old Christopher Derleth is charged with aggravated kidnapping and child abduction. Madison County States Attorney Tom Gibbons says more charges could eventually be added.

This is interesting and was not mentioned in other news articles.

The charge of aggravated kidnapping describes Katherine as suffering from “severe or profound intellectual disability.”

“severe or profound intellectual disability".
If this is true, then her "mother" should be executed for sacrificing her most helpless lamb to keep the bill payer happy.

But I do not believe that her age prohibits her from being a good mother.

Well then you're wrong. No room for opinions on this, a child is not capable of raising a child of their own. Fact. Add in the laundry list of issues and abuse this kid suffers from, and it's all the more impossible.

DECEMBER 05, 2017

A Granite City man will spend six years in prison for kidnapping his 13-year-old stepdaughter and her newborn son, a Madison County judge ruled.

[...] Madison County Judge Richard Tognarelli sentenced him Nov. 16 to six years in prison for kidnapping and three for abduction, to be served at the same time.

The six-year Madison County sentence however, is supplemental to the 45 years Derleth will spend in prison for perjury and sexually abusing a child, whose identity has not been released, in Bond County. That sentence, in a separate case from the kidnapping charges, came down in early October.

[...]
“It’s a really sad and terrible case,” Gibbons said.

Charges described Katherine as suffering from a “severe or profound intellectual disability.” Derleth had been under a restraining order to stray away from Katherine and the baby while the baby’s paternity test was conducted. Katherine gave birth as Bond County officials investigated Derleth. Bond County State’s Attorney Christopher Bauer would not say if Derleth is the father of Katherine’s baby.

Overall, Derleth will spend 51 years in prison, with the convictions from both counties combined.
[...]

He was sentenced to a total of 45 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Forty years are for the sexual assault charge and five years are for perjury. The terms run consecutively.

The assault charge alleged that in 2015, Derleth had sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13. Bond County State’s Attorney Chris Bauer said it is believed the action occurred while the defendant was living in or near Greenville, between June 1 and October 25 of 2015.

The perjury charge alleged that during a legal adoption case, Derleth submitted a false affidavit, indicating he had never been convicted of a crime, when in fact, he had been convicted in Madison County of obscenity and criminal damage to property.

State’s Attorney Bauer said Derleth must serve at least 85 percent of the 45-year prison sentence.

Friday, Bauer presented the court a victim impact statement written by the victim. He said with the negotiated pleas, the victim avoids having to testify in court. The state’s attorney said Derleth received a substantial sentence and Bauer believes it was a good outcome.

Derleth is still charged in Madison County with aggravated kidnapping and parental abduction. In September of last year, Derleth, his 13-year-old adopted daughter and her infant son were the subjects of a nationwide search which ended on September 24 when they were found in West Virginia.
In 1994, 17-year-old Derleth was charged with two felony counts of child pornography involving the videotaping of Derleth having sex with a "minor female under 18," according to records filed with his 2010 divorce case. The felonies were reduced to an obscenity charge, a Class A misdemeanor, and Derleth received court supervision.
Five years later, Derleth was arrested in Granite City after a police officer said Derleth struck him and made off with the officer's new Ford Crown Victoria squad car, which later was found crashed. He was given 18 months probation for the lesser charge of damaging government-supported property, and completed probation successfully.
Oh and he worked in a daycare for a couple years ..
