A policewoman has died after contracting a contagious disease when a thug spat in her face during an arrest.

Arina Koltsova, from Kiev, Ukraine, was arresting a suspect on New Year's Day - unaware that he was suffering from tuberculosis (TB). While carrying out her duties she was spat on by the man.

The 35-year-old remained untreated for some time, before she collapsed at work one day

She was later diagnosed with the infectious lung disease and was forced into treatment.

Her on-duty partner, Officer Mikhail Kindrakevich, wrote: 'She became ill after New Year's Day. She had arrested this guy and he spat in her face. Some time later she collapsed.

'She had received treatment. She underwent chemotherapy, she was fed food through an IV drip and she had lost a lot of weight.'

The chemotherapy, often used to treat acute cases of tuberculosis, weakened Ms Koltsova and caused her to become severely undernourished.

A recent selfie shows her gaunt face and the short hair that she had towards the end of her life.

Ms Koltsova died on Monday and was buried in Kiev two days later.

That sounds like an awful way to die.

I wonder if the man has been/will be charged with (the countries equivalent) grievous bodily harm, same as people who knowingly infect another with HIV.

The TB epidemic in Ukraine is characterized by widespread multi-drug resistant (MDR) and extensively drug resistant (XDR) tuberculosis (TB), relatively high mortality from untreated or inappropriately treated TB

This is insane, when a vaccine exists. My frame of reference for tuberculosis is that it's an old disease. Les Miserables was written in 1862! I didn't realize people were still dying of this, and in such numbers. :(

Just Googling now and reading that there has been a TB problem in Kiev for years. Part of the issue being that they simply don't have the vaccine to administer.

“Every day in Kiev 100 people die, one of which if from active tuberculosis. And five people in Kiev get infected with TB daily,” – said L.Kanarovskaya.

Another problem is BCG vaccination. According toRT, in September 2014 Kiev maternity units have run out of the BCG vaccine that is administered to all newborns before leaving the hospital. The BCG vaccination is used in Ukraine, and in many other FSU states to prevent TB in children. The first vaccination is usually made at birth, to form the immune response to TB in a newborn baby.

According to RT, the reason for the vaccine absence was a refusal of Ukraine’s government to procure Russian-made BCG vaccine. Ukrainian internet site Korrespondent on Sept 18, 2014 has informed that BCG was absent not only in maternity wards in Kiev, but across all Ukraine, and situation was like this in the previous six months. Instead, the Ministry of Health has promised to supply Ukraine’s maternity wards with a vaccine made in Denmark. There is no information of what the situation with BCG vaccines is now in Ukraine.
