A woman was killed Monday night in a dog attack in Conifer and her son suffered injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The incident happened at about 7 p.m. when the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about the attack, said Dionne Waugh, a sheriff’s office spokeswoman.

Deputies responded to the 31000 block of Black Widow Drive. A woman died at the scene and her son, who is in his late teens or early 20s, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Waugh said.

The mother and son were attacked by two dogs they own, Waugh said. The sheriff’s office described both dogs as a terrier-pit bull mix.

The victims’ names have not been released.

The dogs are in custody of Jefferson County Animal Control. An investigation is ongoing.

Conifer, CO - Two family pit bulls killed a woman and injured her son Monday night. Jefferson County Sheriff's Office responded to a dog attack in the 31000 block of Black Widow Drive, a remote part of Conifer, about 7 pm. The woman died on scene, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said. Her son suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital. The mother and son owned the dogs, Waugh said. Authorities seized two pit bulls from the home.
"When we got here, we discovered that a tragic incident had taken place. Two suspected pit bulls had turned on one of the residents. Severely injuring a female resident; she succumbed to her injuries and passed away on scene." - Jefferson County Sheriff's Office
The names of the mauling victims have not yet been released. The two pit bulls -- also described as pit bull-mixes by police -- are currently in the custody of Jefferson County Animal Control. We asked the sheriff's office to release photographs of the dogs. Video footage taken by local news stations depicts a white and brown pit bull. Photos on the son's Facebook page show a similar pit bull along with a nearly all black pit bull living at the family's home. We are waiting on confirmation.

Susan Shawl, and her dogs
CONIFER, Colo. -- A fatal dog attack in Jefferson County Monday led to the death of a mother and hospitalization of her son. Both pit bulls were put down Tuesday.

Police say first responders rushed to treat a woman who suffered severe injuries in an attack by two dogs, later identified as pit bulls.

Medical professionals pronounced the mother, now identified as Susan Shawl, 60, dead, but rushed her son Richard Shawl, 36, to a local hospital.

Police have still not said what led up to the attack but did say Richard had been cited with a warning notice after a neighbor reported his dogs as being loose and aggressive.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputies stated they feel for the family. Richard Shawl authorized animal control to euthanize both dogs on Tuesday.
