Police searching for a missing couple have found a body in woodland in a Suffolk village near where they live.

Officers were contacted at 07:15 BST on Friday by a woman who reported concern for Peter and Sylvia Stuart, of Weybread, near Diss, who had not been seen since 28 May.

Their Mill Lane home and the surrounding area were searched and the body, believed to be 75-year-old Peter Stuart, was found at 19:15.

Police have launched a murder inquiry.

Det Ch Supt Simon Parkes, from Suffolk Police, told a news conference in Weybread that the body was found about 30ft (9m) from the Stuart's home.

He said the body was fully clothed but could not comment on how long it had been in position before it had been discovered.

The village of Weybread is made up of about 200 homes covering about 2,500 acres (1,011 hectares).

Graham Gibbs, chair of Weybread Parish Council, said: "It has been a big talking point in the village. Nothing like this happens in Weybread, although I suppose everyone says that."

A man has been charged with murdering a couple following his extradition from Luxembourg.

Ali Qazimaj was brought to the UK to face charges over the deaths of Peter Stuart, 75, and his wife Sylvia, 69.

Mr Stuart was found with multiple knife wounds in woodland near his home in Weybread, Suffolk, on 3 June. Mrs Stuart's body has not been found.

The 42-year old, of Tilbury, Essex, was detained on a European Arrest Warrant in Luxembourg on June 16.

He was collected by police officers from the Suffolk and Norfolk joint major investigations team and brought back to the UK on Thursday.

Asked by Judge David Goodin if he was Ali Qazimaj, he replied through an Albanian translator: "No, I am Vital Dapi."

He said he was born Elba Sam in Albania.

Stephen Rose, defending, said his client had protested that he was not the man he was accused of being.

Suspect in Suffolk double murder

A woman whose parents were allegedly murdered told a jury that a mystery man accosted her father in his garden weeks before his death.

Christy Paxman, who dabbed her eyes as she gave evidence, said her father told her an unknown man approached him in his garden in Weybread, Suffolk.

According to Mrs Paxman, the man said "I understand you want to sell up" when he approached Mr Stuart on 28 May, 2016.

She added: "Dad was surprised at that, as he hadn't had anyone round to value the house. He was surprised that this chap knew."

Mr Qazimaj was a carer to Mrs Paxman's elderly father-in-law, Sidney Paxman, and, according to prosecutors, had accrued gambling debts.

Karim Khalil QC, prosecuting, said Mr Paxman mentioned the Stuarts to him, describing them as millionaires.
