A bookkeeper was heard telling a young barmaid outside a nightclub "I'll get you home safe" before she was raped and murdered, a court has heard.

The body of India Chipchase, 20, was found at a house in Stanley Road, Northampton, on 31 January.

Birmingham Crown Court heard Edward Tenniswood, 52, of Stanley Road, Northampton, denies her murder.

Christopher Donnellan QC, prosecuting, said Miss Chipchase's body was found on a mattress at the defendant's home.

The jury heard Miss Chipchase's death "was no dreadful accident" and that Mr Tenniswood "raped and throttled" her at his home in Stanley Road.

"When she resisted he gripped her around the throat and squeezed. She suffered a blunt force trauma to the head and face and appeared to put up a struggle," he said.

After she died, Mr Tenniswood set about tidying up, Mr Donnellan added.

"He re-clothed her, covered her in a sheet and left her. He removed her belongings."

The jury was told Mr Tenniswood had put on clear plastic vinyl gloves that were later found in a bag of rubbish.

"He was obviously aware of what he was doing and put on clear plastic vinyl gloves," Mr Donnellan said. "They were found in a bag of rubbish - India's blood on the outside of the gloves and his DNA on the inside.

When Mr Tenniswood was arrested police saw a scratch on his neck and other marks on his body, the court heard.

A student was seen stumbling and being led by her arm into a house in which she was murdered, a court has heard.

Patrick Francis told the Birmingham Crown Court jury he was in Stanley Road when he saw Miss Chipchase being led into the house.

The prosecution claims Mr Tenniswood "led, steered or escorted" the social care student and part-time barmaid to a taxi, took her to his rented terraced house in Stanley Road and then "raped and throttled" her.

Mr Francis said he was smoking a cigarette in the early hours of 30 January when he saw a young woman and a "much older" man walking side-by-side down Stanley Road.

"She seemed as if she was drunk because she was holding on to the railing, and the guy with her was by her side," he said.

The witness said he found it strange that neither acknowledged him as they passed.

The jury had earlier heard Mr Tenniswood turned up outside NB's cocktail bar and nightclub in Northampton in the early hours of 30 January when Miss Chipchase was in a "fairly pickled state" and could "barely stand up".

Her friend Alice Lewis told the jury she and Miss Chipchase were part of a group who had gone to the club.

But when Miss Lewis returned from the bar with drinks, Miss Chipchase had gone.

Home Office pathologist Michael Biggs told a Birmingham Crown Court jury she had "bruises around the neck consistent with pressure being applied".

Dr Biggs told the court the injuries were mainly bruises and scratches, some of which may have been caused by Ms Chipchase falling over after drinking alcohol.

The 20-year-old's blood alcohol level was about three times the drink-drive limit, the court was told.

But the jury also heard she suffered from blunt force trauma to her face and neck, consistent with assault.

A post-mortem examination concluded the cause of death was pressure on the neck.

Christopher Christon saw Ms Chipchase "stumbling" across the road near NB's club in Northampton.

He told Birmingham Crown Court he was waiting for a lift home with his wife Jacqueline near the club at about 01:00 GMT on Saturday 30 January when he saw Ms Chipchase on her phone.

He said: "She seemed quite distressed. I think she was trying to get through to someone. It seemed like she was crying."

Ms Chipchase was outside the club after she got separated from her friends inside, when at about 01.15 she was approached by a man who the prosecution have claimed was Mr Tenniswood.

Mr Christon said he saw an older man wearing a Parka-type jacket and a rucksack get "all the way up" to Ms Chipchase and "put his arm around her".

The witness said he was concerned enough to tell his wife to keep watching, but it did not appear to him that Ms Chipchase responded to the older man in any way during a 20-minute period.

Samuel Stein QC, defending, asked: "Did it look like the girl was ignoring the bloke?"

Mr Christon replied: "I just think she was that drunk that she didn't know what was going on."

This turns my stomach.
Playing the good guy and yet he is every shade of evil there is.

I know the UK doesn't have the death penalty. But, I wish this piece of garbage a slow and painful death.
One where he sits and rots away in prison.

Nah real creepy looking broad. That pic is ok, but the others out there, yikes.

Sad story, but she was weird looking and she was dumb as shit. When will people learn that alcoholic fun isn't the best or safest way to have a good time.

Beautiful girl with insanely poor decision making.

I keep reading her last name as Chipotle.
Damn I want a sammich.

She was very pretty. Just a bit of a five-head.

And lol @ "drink OR drop E." Big difference to me but I get what you're saying. I could say "everything in moderation" but in this day and age, dropping E in moderation is like Russian roulette. Anyone else remember the "good ol' days" of 90's raves with pretty consistent happy wafers going around?:D
