Rose Geil, 39, appeared on British talk show This Morning to discuss how her decision to stop shaving her beard changed her life. Geil has polycystic ovarian syndrome, an endocrine disorderthat sometimes causes women of reproductive age to grow excess hair.

Geil was diagnosed at the age 13, she explained, and had been shaving her facial hair for years after medication didn't help control the symptoms of the condition. The result of more than 20 years of shaving was completely "torn up" and painfully irritated skin — Geil finally decided last year she "couldn't handle putting a metal blade to [her] skin one more day."
[....]
Geil never felt she was able to truly be herself while she was doing it: "My full personality was never present. Instead of facing ridicule, I hid. I didn't participate fully in school as a young child — even going to class on a regular basis was difficult for me," she said. "I was wearing things with high necks and long sleeves to hide my issue."

She credits social media with allowing her to let her personality "shine through" all these years. Once she began posting pictures of herself with a beard, she found her "community straight away. Even before I let my beard grow, I was following certain accounts that were run by bearded women or just people in general who didn't conform to a conventional look, or gender roles, even. Inspiration is there, it's a beautiful thing."

When the host of the show asked about if Geil had seen an increase in attention from men since she stopped shaving, Geil shut her down: "Oh yeah, that's not too surprising. There are all kinds of people in the world attracted to all kinds of things, so I wasn't too surprised when I started getting lots of attention."

She also told the hosts of the show she thinks about the "years of heartache and anguish" she could have spared her younger self if she'd only realized it was more than OK to stop shaving sooner, but she now knows that's not fair: "I was ready now. Now is the time to do it."

Cheers to living an authentic life.

I face the same problem sometimes with vitiligo. For the past ten years I've been scared to

get a tan for fear of discovering new patches of skin with no pigment. This year

I said fuck it, because last year we were away and I just seen so many others

with the same disorder that i kind of stopped giving a shit about it.

I really don't know how I feel about this. She certainly won't be getting any attention from me, but you go girl! I guess?

Shaving isn't really traumatic though. Most men do it. Not sure what her reasons are. Not sure I care.

I wonder how long it took to grow that. When I read the article, I was thinking she had a small patch of a beard. It seems a lot of her face is affected. It must have been hell growing up for her. I wish I had her confidence.

I'm jealous of her beard. They're too damned hot and itchy some times. Then there's the whisker burns from muff diving that makes it a safety issue. Hate the smell of conditioner, what we do for love.

An old boyfriend once said to me "If you can't fix it, feature it." I've found those words empowering over the years.

Look at it this way, even if she shaves, she'll get 5:00 shadow. She deserves a companion that won't reject her for her condition, so why not let her freak flag fly to weed out the shallow?

Well if she is happy, then I'm happy for her, but there is no way i would do it. I would have that electrolysized until it didn't come back.
I guess i wouldn't have expected a woman to be able to grow that much beard. Im always paranoid im going to have a little lip/ chin/eyebrow/ boob hair i don't notice and miss tweezing, so this puts that into perspective. I just have my upper lip waxed, God, it hurts so bad, seriously.

I have PCOS. I do not have a beard. And I am suddenly extremely grateful for that fact.

Good for her if she feels good, but I would be a waxing, lazering crazy person.

I have PCOS. And I have hirsutism, but nothing remotely close to her level.

The trick with PCOS and its bastard hormone problems is keeping the weight down. Which is hard because those hormones mean you can just look at a salad lol and pack on weight. Its twice as hard to lose weight too.

But its doable. It comes down to what are your primary priorities. And its not just a case of eating g well and exercising. Its eating extremely strictly and exercising in excess compared to the average woman without it. And the constant sugar cravings thanks to peaking and crashing blood sugar. It really does consume so much of your every day attention.

I keep my weight down to prevent the hirsutism from getting out of hand like hers and to prevent a whole bunch of other nasty side conditions from flaring up. To me, the sacrifices are worth it.

I can't WAIT for menopause personally! I applaud Rose for her convictions and choices, I could not live that way. Quite a few women with PCOS and hirsutism have committed suicide over it. Kids stare, adults stare. Men get extremely uncomfortable about it.

As long as she's happy, then good for her.
