Around 5 a.m. Sunday, Canby police responded to a possible hit-and-run crash in the 200 block of South Locust Street. When they arrived, they found 43-year-old Edward Spangler of Grants Pass dead next to his car with gunshot wounds, according to Sgt. Frank Schoenfeld of Canby police.
Detectives interviewed witnesses and said they believe Spangler had been involved in a drug deal at a Canby apartment complex on South Locust Street when he was shot.
Spangler later died of gunshot wounds from the confrontation, an autopsy report confirmed.
Francis Weaver, 31, (pictured in center of photo above) Michael Orren, 27, and Shannon Bettencourt, 32, were charged with murder.

Weaver was arrested Tuesday after additional information surfaced in the investigation. All three suspects have been charged with murder.
Canby police confirmed Weaver is the stepson of convicted murderer Ward Weaver, who is currently serving life in prison for raping and killing two Oregon City girls. Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis vanished in 2002 and Weaver was later convicted of killing both girls and hiding their bodies on his property.
Earlier that same year, Ward was accused of raping and trying to kill Francis' 19-year-old girlfriend. Francis called 911 to report the attack and then also gave investigators key information that helped convict Ward in the murders of Gaddis and Pond.
Ward Weaver's father, Ward Weaver, Jr., was convicted in 1981 of killing a young couple and then burying their bodies under a concrete slab behind his home in California. He confessed to beating Robert Radford to death and then raping and strangling the man's fiancee, Barbara Levoy.

Weaver is the stepson of Ward Weaver (pictured center), an infamous Oregon child killer responsible for the 2002 deaths of 12-year-old Ashley Pond and 13-year-old Miranda Gaddis, both of Oregon City. Ward Weaver pleaded guilty to multiple counts of murder in the deaths, along with attempted aggravated murder and rape in several other cases. He was spared the death penalty as part of a plea deal.

Ward Weaver’s own father, Ward F. “Pete” Weaver Jr. (pictured left) was found guilty and sentenced to death in 1984 for killing two people. He buried one of the victims under a slab of concrete, a crime almost identical to the one his son would commit some 18 years later, according to numerous newspaper reports from the time.
The disturbing irony in the case is Francis Weaver turned in his stepfather, Ward Weaver, for the Oregon City murders. Francis Weaver was hailed as a hero and spoke openly about his role in the arrest of his stepfather.
“The whole thing just disgusts me. I’d hate to even think that I was brought to this world from a man like that,” Francis Weaver said in an interview with Good Morning America in 2002.

Orren reportedly sent Weaver a text message in order to figure out where Spangler was. One of the suspects then sent Orren to a parking lot in the 200 block of South Locust Street where he shot Spangler in the face and shoulder,
