. I was surprised not to see this story here.

Auburn police Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr. was making a traffic stop around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when an occupant of the car shot him and fled, police Chief Andrew Sluckis said.
Tarentino, 42, was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, where he was pronounced dead, Sluckis said.
The shooting prompted a joint investigation involving several police departments, the Massachusetts State Police, the Worcester County district attorney's office and the FBI.
The search for Jorge Zambrano, 35, a suspect with an "extensive criminal history," led authorities to a duplex apartment in nearby Oxford, said Col. Richard McKeon, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police.
Behind the residence they found a vehicle believed to be the one Tarentino stopped, McKeon said.
A state police tactical team entered one side of the duplex. The team cleared the apartment without finding the suspect, McKeon said.
Members of the tactical team found an opening in the cellar wall that led to the other side of the duplex, McKeon said. Investigators made their way through the cellar and the first floor, climbing to a bedroom on the second floor, he said.

questioning why accused cop killer Jorge Zambrano was allowed to walk out of court despite numerous encounters with police just weeks before he shot and killed Auburn Police Officer Ronald Tarentino.

The manhunt began after Auburn Police Officer Ronald Tarentino was fatally shot during a traffic stop about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Paul Jarvey, a spokesman for Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.

"Throughout his record, on nearly all of his charges, there is a resisting arrest or an assault and battery on a police officer charge, your honor, and for that reason, I am moving to revoke his bail on the open Worcester matter", the ADA said before requesting $2,500 bail on the new charges, pointing to Zambrano's 11-page record and two length state prison sentences. McKeon said police are not releasing the trooper's name to give his family privacy. "The STOP (State Police Special Tactical Operations) team returned fire and struck the suspect".

Authorities said the suspect in Tarentino's killing, Jorge Zambrano, was shot and killed by police late Sunday, after he shot at police when they tracked him to a duplex in Oxford.

Madness that anyone charged with a violent felony, let alone one with such an extensive record, is given bail ever.

I get it jails are overcrowded, but people liek this shouldn't be provided even the slightest convenience or benefit legally.

This was huge news here...TV news covered the whole story, the wake and funeral, police from all over the country came to honor this officer. His widow and one of his 3 sons spoke, it was so sad. He shot a cop over a traffic stop? Good thing he's dead, nobody would have any sympathy for that asshole.

Funeral services set for officer shot during traffic stop
CHARLTON, Mass. (AP) — Police from New England and around the country marched in solemn formation to a church in a small Massachusetts community Thursday, as a wake was held for an officer who was fatally shot during a traffic stop.

In all, thousands of people paid their respects to Auburn Officer Ronald Tarentino Jr., the 42-year-old son of a police officer who left a wife and three children.

"Just really special people," Republican Gov. Charlie Baker said of Tarentino's family after meeting with them at St. Joseph Catholic Church in nearby Charlton. "And handling what really has to be a catastrophe with just an incredible amount of grace."

A funeral Mass is planned for Friday at the church, followed by burial at Greenville Baptist Church Cemetery in Tarentino's hometown of Leicester.

The officer was shot in the back by Jorge Zambrano during a traffic stop early Sunday, authorities said. Zambrano was later killed after he fired at police from a bedroom closet inside a duplex apartment, injuring a state trooper, state officials said.

Zambrano had a long criminal history, and some have criticized the judicial system for allowing him to be free after a string of recent arrests and repeated probation violations.
