FBI Intensifies Search For Missing Conway, NH 14-Year-Old Girl

NORTH CONWAY, N.H. (CBS/AP) — The FBI, state and local authorities are adding manpower to help in the search for a missing 14-year-old North Conway girl that is entering its third day.

Police say Abigail Hernandez left Kennett High School around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon and they believe she made it home. But when her mother arrived home, the girl was gone.

Conway Police Chief Edward Wagner says police are treating it as a missing person’s case. He won’t discuss specific evidence but says there’s nothing suspicious so far.

The FBI announced during a noon news conference on Friday that agents from as far away as Virginia, including a child abduction response team, are heading to New Hampshire to help.

Missing teenager Abigail Hernandez's cell phone was last used about four hours after she left school Wednesday.

Fish and Game Maj. Kevin Jordan said Sunday the final call on the 15-year-old's phone was made in the vicinity of Cranmore Mountain Resort, a little more than two miles from where she lived.
[...]

Kieran Ramsey, the FBI's supervisory special agent in New Hampshire, said thus far investigators have received approximately 200 tips from as far away as Texas. He urged the public to search their own properties, sheds and yards for any sign of the missing girl and said that "no effort is wasted."
[...]

"In my mind, this is still a missing person case," Jordan said.

When asked what differentiates a missing person case from a suspected abduction, Agent Ramsey replied, "quite literally, nothing." It is the lack of information regarding abduction or any other outcome that keeps the case a missing person investigation, he said.
[...]

"We were actually looking for Abby, and were looking in the area of the cell phone band from the tower signal the last time her phone was activated," Jordan said.

During the media briefing Saturday night at the Conway Police Department, Zenya Hernandez made a tearful plea for her daughter to come home, wished her a happy 15th birthday, and asked anyone that has noticed a change in the girl's behavior or who knows anything to come forward.

Law enforcement investigators had little reaction to statements last week by the father of Abigail Hernandez indicating that the missing 15-year-old ran away from home.

In a Christmas letter to Abigail last week, Ruben Hernandez included this statement to his daughter: "Abby I am assuming that you did run away," he wrote.
[...]

FBI Agent Kieran Ramsey, one of the lead investigators in the missing person case, acknowledged that the investigation is considering the possibility that Abigail ran away, among several other possibilities.

"We aren't going to characterize his plea (to Abigail) in his letter one way or the other," Ramsey said.

Law enforcement officials have expressed "grave" concerns about Abigail's whereabouts, saying she could be somewhere held against her will.

Asked to elaborate on his statement, Ruben Hernandez said he based his judgment on a letter that his daughter mailed to her mother after she disappeared.
[...]

"I don't know if Abby ran away or not," Ruben Hernandez said. "As I stated in my first letter to her: 'We don't know if you ran away, but if you did … .'"

"Since a letter surfaced on Nov. 6, I'm just going to assume that she did (run away)," he said. "I hope this clarifies what I meant."

Wednesday marks 6 months since missing NH teen last seen alive
Wednesday will mark six months since Abigail "Abby" Hernandez was last seen, and her mother has released a new statement vowing to keep searching for the missing 15-year-old.
The Conway teen was last seen leaving Kennett High School in October.
Her mother, Zenya, posted the following message on the Bring Abby Home website:
"Wednesday will be six months. Six months since we last saw Abby. We dread it, but hope that maybe we won't have to face this day. We hope, as we hope every day, that today will be the day when we see Abby.

Each day comes and goes, and the new day arrives, with its new hope, and then the hope dies. We reach these milestones, no matter how abhorrent and painful they are.

In the beginning, minutes and hours lasted eternity. Hours turned to days, weeks, months. In the first days, I didn't think I could survive the blinding shock, not even for a week. The shock turned to despair, the ache, a scorch of doubt, the lasting heavy pain. Everywhere we go, we look for you. Everyone we talk to, we talk to them thinking that maybe they know.

There were times, when hopes went way up. They came crushing down.

Abby is all we think about and all we talk about.

There is a lot we don't know. One thing I know, is how much I love Abby. I know that she is compassionate, smart, funny, a caring friend, a loving daughter, a great writer, skier, climber, and musician. Survivor. There is nothing, nothing that will shake my love for Abby, and there is nothing that will make me loose hope.

No matter what, we won't stop looking."

This is great news, seen a lot popping up about it. I thought she had to have died. Comments on news stories here are all about punishing her for "wasting resources"... isn't that what our resources are for? I'll pay taxes for that, "wasted" or not.

I agree, I don't think we need to be crucifying her at all. We have NO idea what the circumstances about her initial disappearance are and even though I think it's likely to somehow involve her voluntarily 'running away,' at 14 she's really young. I can't imagine her having the knowledge or forethought to think about all of the effort/money/time/etc being used to find her.

I am sure her mom didn't think it was wast of resources.

An absolutely amazing story. Missing for nine months and returned home safe. As long as she is safe and at home then I believe that the resources were not wasted because that is exactly what we have resources for!

This child being missing for NINE WHOLE MONTHS and then her returning safe and sound had to involve an adult of some kind, there is really no way this child lasted so long without some kind of adult intervention. I wish we could know the rest of the story.

Where Was Missing Teen Abigail Hernandez for the Past 9 Months?

[...]

aside from one letter to her mother this winter, there had been no indication by officials that there was any trace of her until she was reunited with her parents on Sunday.

Investigators were remaining tight-lipped about the 15-year-old's return, refusing to even say how the girl was reunited with her mother, Zenya Hernandez.

The criminal investigation into the teen's disappearance has not stopped, authorities said.

"We have said from the beginning and we continue to believe that this was a 14-year-old girl who went missing in October," Associate Attorney General Jane Young told ABC News. "She was gone for nine months. She didn't have the means to orchestrate and facilitate this on her own."
Abigail's whereabouts during her disappearance remain a mystery, with the only two locations publicly connected to the case being her school, Kennett High School in North Conway, New Hampshire, and her mother's home in Conway.

[...]
She did not have money, IDs or any additional sets of clothes with her when she went missing, according to the website.
[...]
Our worst fear right now is that while she could have left willingly, someone may now be coercing her, someone may now be manipulating her," FBI Special Agent In Charge Kieran Ramsey said in a December press conference detailing the letter. "When we received this letter, I'll tell you it was unprecedented. ... It gave us hope."
That hope was rewarded Sunday when Abigail was reunited with her sister and mother, who said, "Today, we are the happiest people on earth."

I knew that there had to be an adult of some description involved in this somewhere. She had to have some money from somewhere and who provided that?

You hit it china, this is word around town. I think she was pregnant and if they find out that was the case, i really feel she should have to pay for all the money that was used for her searches. I don't think they should get away with that. People here are really upset and rightly so. I live in conway and it's been quite interesting. I think the whole abduction thing is bull. Guy doesn't exist.
