In nearby Lebanon, an unusual explosion that left one dead is being investigated. Reports indicate that a package inside a mailbox at a home on Vance Lane off of Hartsville Pike exploded. The explosion killed one person and left another injured.

The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

The victims were my stepdad-in-law's sister and brother-in-law. We've been wracking our brains since yesterday afternoon, but we can't think of any reason that someone might have to want to hurt them.

Omg crazy. For the love of all that is right and good let's hope we don't have another Ted Kaczynski on our hands. Random mad bomber just wanting to blow shit up.

Wilson County Emergency Management Agency Director Joey Cooper said WEMA and county officials responded to an explosion at 576 Vance Lane in Lebanon at around 5 p.m.
[...]

He said the explosion came from inside the two-story, single-family home. He said, contrary to some media reports, the explosion did not originate in a mailbox.

Cooper said the second victim received burns to the face and chest and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Cooper said responders put out a small fire at the home.

According to Cooper, agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are leading the investigation, with the ATF, the state bomb and arson division, the Wilson County Sheriff’s Department and Homeland Security assisting.

Federal investigators at the scene of a deadly house explosion in Middle Tennessee say they have ruled out any accidental cause of the blast that killed one person.
[...]

Agency spokesman Michael Knight said investigators have ruled out accidental causes in Monday's explosion such as a gas leak or electrical malfunction.

Knight said authorities searched the property Monday night but found no other explosives. He said it appears to be an isolated incident.

The house is intact but several rooms were damaged by the blast, Knight said.

Investigators were processing evidence at the scene and interviewing neighbors, Knight said.

An injured person was also found at the scene, but Knight said authorities were still trying to determine whether the injury was caused by the explosion.

Unofficially: yes, the injuries were from the explosion. 50% of total body surface area is badly burned, including the face. My stepdad-in-law is an emergency room doctor, and last I heard he's en route to Nashville now to help his niece and nephew with power of attorney and executor stuff. They can't make any funeral arrangements yet, since the deceased is currently evidence.

Good to hear. All sorts of nefarious things were running through my mind with that poorly chosen part of the article. Not that all sorts of other nefarious reasons aren't in there too...

our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.Hope the answers come soon and not drag out for a long time!!!!!

Finally, it's been confirmed that John Setzer died at the scene from injuries sustained in the explosion, and his wife, Marian Setzer, is in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Hospital.

This is the first confirmation we've had by officials that the victims are, in fact, distant relations-by-marriage of my husband's.

My stepdad-in-law is about ten years younger than his sister, who is 72, and they were never very close. My husband hasn't seen the Setzers in about 20 years, and we know very little about them.

Conflicting information is trickling down different branches of the family grapevine: some say he was a retired lawyer (specialty unclear at this point), others say he worked for Merrill Lynch before retiring nearly a decade ago.

A retired lawyer was killed and a woman was critically injured when a package delivered to their rural Tennessee home blew up, authorities said Tuesday.

Jon Setzer, 74, died when the package exploded late Monday afternoon in Lebanon, about 30 miles east of Nashville, investigators said at a news conference.

Marion Setzer, 72, was in critical condition at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan said.
[...]

While investigators said they believed it was an isolated incident, they urged members of the public several times to be on the lookout for "suspicious packages" and to report them immediately.

Otherwise, authorities would say little, stressing that the investigation was still early. They wouldn't speculate on whether Jon Setzer was the intended victim — several other people named Setzer live on the property on Vance Road, according to state records — or why the property was targeted.

"Any time you have an explosion like this, yes, it's a bizarre case," Bryan said.

State business and professional records show that Jon Setzer was an attorney specializing in bankruptcy law. State court system and bar association records show no public disciplinary actions that might point to a disgruntled former client.

I hope they find out what happened soon. Even though you weren't close I'm sure you'll still want closure.

Clarification achieved! He was a lawyer many years ago, although never a criminal lawyer. He quit something like 25+ years ago to become a minister.

So, still no reason to blow him up.

At-the-hospital UPDATE: Doctors are giving her a 5% chance of surviving the night, and statistics show that there's an 85% chance that someone with burns like hers will not leave the hospital alive. I know more, but I want to leave the immediate family some privacy. Suffice it to say that she's in extremely critical condition, and her family is in shock.

Not to disparage anyone, but might a child or family member wanted them dead for their money? It always amazes me when I hear of people trying this and expecting to get away with it.

Law enforcement sources say that a note was recovered from the bombing scene and was believed to have been attached to the bomb.

Investigators on Wednesday were cataloging evidence of a blast that was powerful enough to extend through much of the house and destroy windows.

A barrage of federal, state and local authorities descended on the neighborhood near Lebanon, Tennessee, about 30 miles east of Nashville. The FBI, U.S. postal inspectors, the Department of Homeland Security and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are also investigating.

So far, they haven't publicly disclosed a motive.
[...]

Michael Knight, spokesman for the ATF in Nashville, said investigators are looking at how the package was delivered and whether there were any threats to the family. They haven't identified suspects, he said.

Investigators are testing items in the home, including labels and pieces of paper, to determine whether they were part of the package or perhaps previous deliveries.
[...]

The victims took the package from the mailbox about 200 yards away from the house, which is in a rural area, Knight said. The blast occurred near the front door of the house, though it's not clear whether just inside or right at the door.

I just received the news that Marion has passed away at Vanderbilt University Hospital.

I'm sorry, @Azryhael, I really hope that they figure out who did this, hopefully not children or other relatives. :(

*BREAKTHROUGH*

Jon and Marion's son-in-law has confessed to killing them. More info to follow at a 6pm EST press conference tonight.

Well SHIT! I don't know what else to say. Maybe over money? If you want to off someone a gun or knife or baseball bat are the usual weapons. But this guy just blew up the whole house; I'm guessing he wanted to make damn sure they would be dead. Scum sucking turd. I'm guessing there is money involved, or maybe a bitter, long drawn out feud. But shit! Blow up a whole house? They could have had company over, and the anal drip was willing to blow up everybody in there. Sure caught him fast...

And since the murdering arsehole lived on the same property, any of his four children could have dropped by Grandma and Grandpa's house after school and been hurt or killed.

I'm so angry that he was someone so close to them.

His name is Richard Parker, and I know he'll burn in hell, if there is one. I'm guessing it was a money thing, myself, but we'll have to wait for additional information.

Either he didn't give a shit about his kids or he knew where they were when he made sure in his chicken shit way that their grandma and granddad made an early entrance to heaven. I am so sorry for his actions, hopefully his wife wasn't involved in this too.

The son-in-law of a retired lawyer and his wife planted the bomb that killed them at their rural home this week, Tennessee authorities said Thursday as they announced his arrest.

Investigators arrested 49-year-old Richard Parker on two counts of felony first-degree murder and two counts of felony premeditated murder in connection with a package bomb that exploded at the rural Tennessee home of Jon and and Marion Setzer, investigators announced Thursday.
[...]

Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan said Parker lived next door to his in-laws. Investigators would not discuss a motive and provided little detail about the case against Parker, but Gwyn said he was the sole suspect in the Setzers' deaths.

"Right now we feel like we have the person responsible for committing this crime in custody," he said.
[...]

Authorities originally said they thought the bomb had been delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, but on Thursday they said they now believe that was not the case.

Officials said Setzer picked up the package from his mailbox, about 200 yards from the home. It detonated just inside the house, killing him and mortally wounding his wife.

Parker has been booked at Wilson County Jail on $1 million bond on the four murder counts in addition to a single charge of unlawful possession of an illegal weapon.

He was previously convicted in a 1993 arson case in Giles County and was sentenced to four years probation.

I am so sorry for his actions, hopefully his wife wasn't involved in this too.
From what we've heard, his wife, Laura, is devastated by the news that her husband is responsible for murdering her parents. I honestly believe, at this point, that she knew nothing of Richard's plan.

@Azryhael . What in the world and all that's in it, would this person want to kill his in laws? Inheritance, debt? My heart just goes out to his wife, their daughter. To all of you.

The only thing I can think of might be money. I mean, they were 74 and 72, if he could have waited 10-15 years they'd have died on their own, but I guess he thought he needed their money now for some reason.

OMMFG!!! What a fucking jerk!!! That poor woman has lost her parents in an awful awful way and now the one person who is suppose to help her through this is the cause of her pain!!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!

I've often heard for older people checking the mail can sometimes be the high point of their day lol. So I wonder if the son in law knew when the mail came and put the package in the mailbox around the time the mail would come so they would collect it all at once. Or did he put it out there and they went out and got it thinking it was a UPS delivery or something.
Either way this guy is a douchebag and it is so crazy he thought he could get away with this. Ted Kaczynski is a genius but even he got caught.

Richard Parker, the son-in-law who has been charged with the murder of Jon and Marian Setzer, was a Sunday school teacher at Nashville's First Church of the Nazarene.

In a short bio on the church web page, Richard and his wife are described as 5th grade Sunday School teachers who see their role as a privilege.
[...]

Richard and his wife, daughter of Jon and Marian also hosted elementary students during a recent camp-out in September of 2013 at their Vance Lane home.
[...]

Friends tell Fox 17 News Jon and Marian Setzer actually moved to the Lebanon home to be closer to their daughter who lives in the home with Parker behind them.

"From what I gather everything she did was about family," said family friend Teresa Barlow.
