A former nurse who's believed to have murdered as many as fifty Texas children is scheduled to get out of prison.

Because of the laws that were in effect at the time of her crime and 99-year sentence, Genene Jones could be released in a little over four years.

Jones was a pediatric nurse who administered deadly injections to some of her young patients. It's said she enjoyed playing the role of the hero in attempting to revive them.

But Jones was only prosecuted for one death: the murder of 15 month old Chelsea McClellan.

Now, 31 years later, McClellan's mother is asking the Bexar County District Attorney to take Genene Jones to trial, once more.

"All these kids deserve a voice," said Petti McClellan-Wiese. "And they all deserve -- their families deserve -- justice. And this D.A. is willing to take that step."

If Jones is convicted of another murder, she can be kept locked up. If not, by law she must be set free in early 2018.
[...]

But it won't be easy to gather evidence for new charges. All the potential cases are three decades old. And many of the hospital documents have been shredded.

Convicted baby killer Genene Jones, known as the Angel of Death, could get out of prison as soon as a year from now but two moms alongside a victim's advocate are fighting to keep that from happening.

District Attorney Susan Reed met with the three to discuss what could be a long battle to keep Jones in prison.

Marina Rodriguez called it a surreal moment to meet Tuesday with Reed. For the first time in more than 30 years she shared her story about the death of her son with investigators.

Rodriguez was 15 when she said former nurse Jones injected her son with a lethal dose of muscle relaxant.

"Thirty seconds after that injection heart attack so my life flipped back then right at that moment," she said.

Feliciano was 6 months when he died.
[...]

The Bexar County prosecutor at the time said he thought Jones would spend the rest of her life in jail, but that might not be the case due to a legal loophole from the 80s.

Petti McClellan, the mother of baby Chelsea, along with the victim's advocate Andy Kahan, met with Reed and said they will stop at nothing to make sure Jones stays in prison.

Rodriguez told Reed she's willing to have her baby's body exhumed if it means a possible new conviction.

A nurse convicted in 1984 of killing an infant and suspected of murdering dozens more will be released from prison without completing her 99 year sentence because of an expired Texas law that grants a "mandatory release" to inmates with good behavior.

On May 14, 1984 Genene Anne Jones, now 63, was sentenced for the murder of 15-month-old Chelsea McClellan in 1982 in a small-town pediatric clinic where Jones was a nurse.

"I was holding Chelsea, she was facing me, and Jones gave her the first shot in her left thigh. Immediately Chelsea had trouble breathing. Chelsea was trying to say my name, but she couldn't. I was extremely upset," Petti McClellan, the victim's mother, told ABC News.

Jones began injecting the child with a lethal dose of the muscle relaxant succinylcholine while the baby was still in her mother's arms, according to McClellan and court records.

Jones was also convicted of injuring a child in another attack in which the child survived. She was sentenced to 60 years on that conviction, but it was ordered to be served concurrently with the 99 year sentence.
[...]

"A lot of the victims' medical records and documents were shredded or disappeared from the hospital where Jones worked," Andy Kahan, a victim's advocate for the Houston mayor's office, told ABC News.

The facility, now called University Hospital, declined to comment on any aspect of the story.

Jones is scheduled to be released from prison on Feb. 24, 2018, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. She will have served 35 years, about one-third of her sentence.

McClellan was meeting with Texas State senators in the early 1990s when she discovered that Jones would be scheduled for early release.

"A congressman came up to me and as I told them Chelsea's story he stopped me and asked when Genene Jones was sentenced," McClellan recalled. He then told McClellan he would be back in a minute and left.

"When he came back he looked upset and he told me, 'We have a problem'," McClellan said. "That's when he told me Genene Jones would not serve her full sentence. I couldn't believe it."

"I was stunned, sad, and so, so, angry. Probably the angriest I have been since Chelsea died. This makes no rhyme or reason. Not just for me and my family, but anybody who suffered. There were so many other victims," McClellan said.

"This is going to happen. There is nothing we can do. Nothing I can do," Petti McClellan, continued. "This has nothing to do with the parole board, the courts. Genene Jones is going to walk free."

Jones will be released because of a Texas law called Mandatory Supervision. Enacted in 1977, the law allowed all convicted criminals to be automatically released on parole after they complete a certain amount of calendar time and good conduct time, which includes participating in work and self-improvement programs, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice parole and mandatory release guide.

Mandatory Supervision was amended in 1987 to exclude violent criminals. But any violent criminal convicted in Texas before 1987 is still eligible for early release, according to the guide.

"Genene Jones has been eligible for parole since 1989, and every three years since 1989 her case has been renewed and parole been denied," Harry Batson, a public information officer for the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole, told ABC News.

"But mandatory release has nothing to do with parole," Batson said. "Even though she has been continually denied parole, that has no bearing on her release."

"During Jones' earlier parole hearings there was always a great deal of public outcry, people being upset that she could get out. But people forget. This happened so long ago, not that many people are aware, or care," Sutton said.

There is only one way to ensure that Jones stays in prison, authorities said.

"We need to find another case, another victim, whose death we can charge her with sufficient evidence," Andy Kahan said.

Jones was hired as a nurse in Bexar County Hospital in 1977, Cheryl Pendergraph, a nurse who worked on the same shift as Jones, told ABC News.
[...]

A few years later, in 1981, Pendergraph and the other nurses in the pediatric ICU noticed a significant increase in the unit's infant mortality rate.

"Our infant mortality rate was much higher in 1981 than it was in previous years," Pendergraph said. "During one of the midnight shifts the nurses and I got together. We had all noticed the increased deaths."

Pendergraph reviewed the patient logbooks and noticed what she said was a troubling pattern.

"Most of the deaths were on the 3-11 shift, which was the shift that Genene Jones worked on. And most of the infants who died were Genene's patients. She was assigned to them," Pendergraph said.

Joyce Riley was a nurse consultant who was also working at Bexar County Hospital.
[...]

"There was talk within the pediatrics unit in the hospital that there were a lot of babies dying," Riley said. "And the way the babies were dying was very unusual. Granted, these children were already sick because they were in the pediatric ICU. But they would suffer from these really untoward events."

"Things like an infant burn victim all of a sudden going into a respiratory attack. These kids would suddenly bleed out or go into cardiac arrest. Their causes of death were not related to their illnesses at all," Riley said.

Like Pendergraph, Riley also looked at the pediatric unit's medical records.

"Jones' name was listed next to most of the infant patients who had suddenly died," Riley said.
[...]

William Chenault, a San Antonio-based lawyer, briefly served as Jones' court-appointed attorney.

To this day Chenault cannot say if Jones was innocent or guilty, "but the case against her was based on circumstantial evidence."

"Jones was a very intelligent woman. She loved working at that hospital. She was a very good nurse. Some said the best," Chenault said.

At the suggestion of prosecuting lawyers, Jones was evaluated by a psychologist.

"She came back perfectly normal," Chenault said.

"Jones always denied that she did anything. She said she was there to help the kids."

And that is what is so freaking terrifying about Genene Jones, she seems just so normal and nice.

I remember this bitch, In May of 84 I had a 4 year old and was pregnant, hearing about her was horrifying, I could not imagine someone who could do these things fully knowing that you were more than likely killing a baby on purpose to make you look like supernurse. I really hope they never let her out.

Yeah, she shouldnt get out of prison ever. I think she was the first serial murder who I read about. She was scary. And all the babies were from poor moms.

I think I watched a television movie on this woman... She needs to stay put in jail. Lol

Nurse who 'murdered 40 infants with poisonous injection' in the 1980s is up for parole... and looks set to be released in less than four years
  • Genene Jones was only convicted of killing one infant, though is believed to have murdered dozens
  • She was sentenced to 99 years in prison - but under 1980s statutes will serve only one third of that
  • She will be released in February 2018
  • Prosecutors are looking for new evidence from the cases - which date back 40 years - in an effort to convict her of a new crime

District Attorney Susan Reed released Tuesday that killer nurse Genene Jones' review and request for parole has been denied.
Three decades have passed since Jones was sentenced to 99 years for murdering a 15-month-old girl. She was later convicted in another attempted homicide and sentenced to a concurrent 60-year term.

Prosecutors believe she may have been responsible for the deaths of more than 40 infants at hospitals where she worked

The horrifying case has been the subject of lurid true crime books and at least two movies. Stephen King fans find similarities between Jones and Annie Wilkes, the fictional killer nurse actress Kathy Bates won an Oscar for portraying in the film version of "Misery."

But under mandatory release laws designed to relieve prison overcrowding in the 1980's, even the most violent and dangerous criminals were credited with three days in prison for every day of good behavior behind bars.

Jones is scheduled for release in 2018.

The parole board has entered conditions that would apply in 2018 that include, but are not limited to, electronic monitoring, no contact with children, and no working with children, said Reed.

Reed said they will not review her case again before 2018.

Good call. I personally feel confident someone will do something to prevent her from being released or violating the terms of her release.
Not everyone has forgotten her . I read the book and to this day I remember thinking she was the most evil thing I'd ever heard about.
So if I were you genene jones I wouldn't get too excited about the idea of getting out. I can't begin to imagine anyone would want to
help make things easier for you. If you do get out you'd be smart to look over your shoulder constantly, and don't trust ANYONE who
says they want to be your friend. That person doesn't exist. You put so many parents and innocent babies through hell. They trusted you and that was misplaced totally. I suspect that if you do actually get out, you'll want to be back inside with your own kind real
quick.

There was also a book released about the case published in 1990 that I read at some point. It really was a shocking case at the time.

Jones began injecting the child with a lethal dose of the muscle relaxant succinylcholine while the baby was still in her mother's arms, according to McClellan and court records.

Now that was an act of a completely depraved mind. To inject a lethal dose of succinylcholine into a baby while it lay in the mothers arms. An act so morally broken that it could only have been perpetrated by an individual with a dark, diseased and atrophying organ that can only be pumping putrefying sludge. The consequences are a brain that shows up looking like this.

Confused why no other prosecutions are taking place. THe article in the first post mentions hospital documents were shredded, but surely the state would have compiled their own evidence.

Is there or is there not actual evidence, not mere heavy suspicion, that she had killed other children?

And who is this dipshit prosecutor back then who somehow didn't know of this 1977 good conduct bullshit????

I recently read "Death Shift" and it was unbelievable how she got away with so much for so long. When I googled her I couldn't believe that she had been up for parole in 2014 and is scheduled for mandatory release in 2018, unless she is prosecuted for another death.

The same thing happened with serial killer "Evil Eyes" Carl Watts in Texas. He killed between 13-15 women. He was about to be released because of the automatic mandatory release and accrued "good time" law, but was successfully prosecuted for another murder and will remain in jail for the rest of his life. (*Parole boards in Texas now have the right to intervene on automatic release dates.)

In the book "Death Shift", when Babykiller quit working for the hospital and went to work for the private practice doctor, right before she was arrested, she injected TWO kids with the succinylcholine and actually accompanied them on the life flight helicopter and kept trying to kill them on the flight! The helicopter had to land in a pasture to attempt to bring one of them back to life. One boy died, one lived.

She was injecting at least one child a week at the private practice and untold numbers at the hospital. The number of children she injected with deadly drugs is believed to be in the hundreds, with 40-50 children dying. If she could bring the child back to life she was a hero, if the child died she would sometimes parade throughout the hospital hallways cradling the dead child in her arms, sobbing.

The book is well worth the read. It's free if you're a Scribd member.

Chelsea McClellan, the infant she now sits in jail for murdering.

He did remain in prison for the rest of his life.

Carl Eugene Watts (November 7, 1953 – September 21, 2007), also known by his nickname Coral, was an American serial killer dubbed "The Sunday Morning Slasher". He died of prostate cancer while serving two sentences of life without parole in a Michigan prison for the murders of Helen Dutcher and Gloria Steele.

My computer is running so slow it won't let me C&P any of it but what the article basically says is that they are indicting her on the death of another baby and will try her again to keep her in jail, she is scheduled to be released in less than a year for good behavior and because of overcrowding. She so does not need to be free to kill again, because she will if given the opportunity.

I just went to go request Death Shift from my library whose systems covers a lot of libraries, and not a trace of it. Odd.

Former nurse Genene Jones, 66, may be responsible for the deaths of up to 60 young children, prosecutors said. She was indicted on a murder charge for the second time in recent weeks.

A former Texas nurse serving time for killing a toddler and sickening another boy was indicted Wednesday on her second murder charge in recent weeks.

Genene Jones, 66, whom prosecutors suspect of killing up to 60 young children, was charged in the September 1981 death of 2-year-old Rosemary Vega.

She was charged with a separate count of murder in May for killing an 11-month-old boy.

Jones is already serving concurrent 99-year and 60-year sentences in state prison for the 1982 killing of a toddler and the sickening of a 4-week-old boy who survived a blood thinner injection.

She was scheduled to be released in March under a Texas law that shortens prison terms for well-behaved inmates. Think the fuck again.

Someone like her doesn't ever need to be near young vulnerable children ever again, for that matter old vulnerable people either.

She's a nurse, and I can see her first job after getting out would be companion/sitter to the elderly. It's hard to get folks who can and will do that and she will kill again to make herself look good while trying to "save" them.

I don't think she would be able to get a nursing licenses anymore.

Shes been indicted again

I hope they try her one dead baby at a time until she dies in prison. People like her, who disguise themselves as nurses and pretend to be so caring, scare the shit out of me, you never see them coming until they've killed and killed again, she needs to never get out of prison. Never, ever, ever.

Suspected "killer nurse" indicted in another infant's death

SAN ANTONIO -- A former nurse who prosecutors believe could be responsible for the deaths of up to 60 Texas children was indicted Tuesday on a murder charge for the fifth time this year.

Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood said a grand jury handed down the new murder indictment against Genene Jones in the 1981 death of 3-month-old Paul Villarreal.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/suspected-killer-nurse-indicted-in-another-infants-death/

Damn.... the body count continues to grow. What a fucking monster, oxygen has been wasted on that one!!!

WOOHOO!!! Keep that bitch locked up. I just saw the Forensic Files episode on her recently. Scary how she could get away with it for so long. A forensic numbers guy took all the nurses working at the hospital at the same time as her and assigned numbers to them. Then he graphed the infant deaths according to time of day and who was on duty. Nurse 34 had the highest graph bar...far beyond all the others. Can you guess who Nurse 34 was? Yup, Jones. When she was arrested, she was working for a private doctor in another town. The hospital gave her good references (probably because they couldn't prove she was responsible but wanted to get her the hell out of their ICU). More deaths occurred at her new employment before they caught her. Almost ruined that poor doctor's practice. Did some serious damage to her reputation and took her many years to regain the townspeople's trust.

I saw that same one not long ago, too and seems there's a book that I read also. She is one demented child killer and I am absolutely convinced she'd do it again if she were ever released. I'm glad they are continuing to charge her to keep her in prison, she really needed the death penalty.

She'll never work in healthcare again even if she is released. I'd be willing to bet there's at least one relative of the 40-60+ infants (even this many years later) that would seek her out for retribution. I don't think she'd last longer than a couple months before her death was being reported in the papers. If she did kill that many, she has one of the highest body counts in serial killer history.
