A 24-year-old Danvers High School teacher has been found dead, and a 14-year-old boy is facing a murder charge in the case, Essex County prosecutors said this morning.

Colleen Ritzer’s body was found in the woods behind the school, said Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett. Citing state law, Blodgett did not name the suspect.

The suspect had been reported missing Tuesday after he did not return home from school. Ritzer was reported missing at about 11:20 p.m. Tuesday when she did not return home and did not answer her cellphone.

Blood was found in a second-floor bathroom of the school. Ritzer’s body was found later behind the school, Blodgett said.

The juvenile was found by Topsfield police at 12:30 a.m. today walking north on the southbound side of Route 1. He is to be arraigned today in juvenile court.

Asked if the juvenile would be charged as an adult, Blodgett said, “We are going to take a hard look at that, obviously.”

He said authorities had no reason to believe there were any other suspects.

All classes in Danvers public schools were canceled this morning due to the investigation. The academic wing of the school is blocked off with crime scene tape.

Town officials called parents at about 4:45 a.m. today, saying only that there was a police presence at the school and schools were canceled.

A 14-year-old boy was cuffed for killing a 24-year-old teacher after her body was found behind a Massachusetts high school late Tuesday, authorities said.

The teen, Philip Chism, was arrested soon after the body of Colleen Ritzer, a math teacher, was found dead in a patch of woods near Danvers High School shortly before midnight, sources said.

Investigators found the dead woman after they discovered traces of blood in a school bathroom, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said.

Chism - who was reported missing earlier in the day - was arrested after Topsfield police spotted him a few miles away from where Ritzer's body was found.


Officials said the accused killer was walking against traffic on Route 1 when he was cuffed.


Authorities did not disclose how Ritzer was killed.

Chism, whose family had reportedly just moved to the area, was expected to be arraigned Wednesday on a murder charge.

Yeah, it is. I wonder if he was a student of hers. It said he JUST moved into the area, so I'm wondering if he had issues before. I'm curious to find out what motivated him to do this.

I wonder if they were looking for the missing kid at the school when they found the blood and followed it to her body.

She wasn't reported missing until 11:20pm and her body was found shortly after.

What were they doing at the school so late? Did they respond to the school because that's where she worked and her car was in the parking lot? Where they already there looking for the kid or did they not respond to the school until the teacher was reported missing and it just didn't take them long to find her?

I need moar info.

Same here. I am guessing one two scenarios took place:

1. He had a thing for her, was stalking her, they got in an argument in the bathroom, he beat her to death.
2. They were banging, she called it off - he beat her to death.
 
Well, this is all over our news here. I have been hearing some things. They are saying he attacked her in the bathroom ...raped her and stabbed and killed her and put her in a bin and brought her to the woods. I highly doubt she did anything with him. From what i hear she was a great teacher, sweet and nice. Plus he's an ugly little fucker. ewwwwwww

But police said in a report filed today in court that the charges came after an interview of Chism and a review of video surveillance footage recovered at the school.

The evidence indicated that Chism “assaulted and subsequently murdered Colleen Ritzer and disposed of her body near the high school grounds.”

The report also said corroborating evidence was found at “multiple scenes at the Danvers High School and surrounding wooded area.”

Chism had recently relocated to Danvers from Tennessee, police said on their Facebook page. The posting said that he had last been seen at the Hollywood Hits theater on Endicott Street around 6:30 p.m. Police tweeted at 7:16 a.m. today that Chism had been found safe.

According to teammates, Chism is the leading scorer for the school’s junior varsity team as a striker. The teammates said that on Tuesday, Chism failed to make the team practice at 4 p.m. and also missed a regular team dinner that is usually held at 6 p.m. at a teammate’s home.

Four members of the team said in an interview that Chism was amiable, hard-working, pleasant, and had managed to collect some friends around him in his first months in a new school. They described him as about 6 feet tall, with a love of soccer.

Alternatively she was trying to sexually assault him and he snapped and killed her....just sayin'...with the creepy teacher stories we see on here, that's also a possibility, especially if he'd been sexually abused before or something...They could've been just student and teacher and she tried to force/coerce him, maybe he rejected her advances a bit too forcefully....

Just because you hear creepy stories about teachers does not mean ALL teachers are doing it. lmao. Umm i highly doubt she tried to force herself on him.

Yes it is a POSSIBILITY. especially since NO ONE knows what really going on. .. ;) I'm banking on him being in love with her, or them possibly already having a relationship, and her trying to break it off because she afraid of losing her job. He gets pissed, kills her... Idk.. it's all a possibility, not saying that's what happened, but that IT'S POSSIBLE IT HAPPENED.

Yeah, that's basically what I'm trying to get at... also that in general media and society are quick to judge when it's white and brown, So if this had been a black male teacher killed by a white female student would it be the same "Teacher was so good and so nice" skew or would it be a "Was the teacher hiding a dark secret" set-up? I think it's important to postulate situations to have an expanded understanding, not that it is what happened or would necessarily be the case but that it remains a possibility, until the facts are known for sure. The boy's attorney requested a mental health evaluation for the teen and suggested she would argue that he was not mentally competent to stand trial. He was held without bail.

His family was in the courtroom during his arraignment and a woman believed to be his mother could be seen sobbing in the gallery when her lanky son appeared.

Lmao... I was just highlighting and capitalizing for others who didn't quite get the whole picture of what you were trying to say. I agree if it was an "ugly" male teacher then things would be different. Just because she's a pretty, Caucasian, female teacher doesn't mean she didn't have something going on behind closed doors. I agree 100%.

Sure, additionally teens are crazy, hormonally imbalanced little bastards, who have a hard time controlling their emotions, so maybe she threatened to get him kicked off the Soccer team by giving him a bad grade...for whatever reason...and he snapped, there are just all kinds of scenarios other than "Bad brown male child, snaps like a pit-bull :rolleyes:, rapes and assaults totally innocent and perfectly kind white female teacher" Although, that too, is a possibility.
