Las Vegas police near the scene of a West Las Vegas home where a woman and girl were found dead after a 9-year-old boy told school officials about the situation on Monday, April 16, 2012

LAS VEGAS — A 9-year-old boy arrived at his Las Vegas school Monday with a grisly story: His mother and sister were dead at their home four blocks away.

Minutes later, police found the bodies of a 10-year-old girl and her mother — along with a blood-covered father and an unharmed 4-year-old boy — in a modest home in a West Las Vegas neighborhood, authorities said.

The five people belonged to a single family, police Officer Jacinto Rivera said.

The man, who was hospitalized with a head injury, was not immediately identified as a suspect or charged.

Police wouldn’t immediately say how or when the slayings occurred, but Rivera said there was no immediate evidence of a break-in at the home or that a suspect was on the loose.

One neighbor, Lucinda Jackson Griffith, said she heard at least one gunshot early Monday.

Longtime neighbor, Dick Webb, said he had walked past the home less than 90 minutes before the boy arrived at school. He said he didn’t notice anything amiss.

Rivera called it too early in the investigation to determine a motive, and said investigators were working carefully to collect evidence inside the single-story stucco home with a motorcycle and two sport utility vehicles in the driveway.

“We get one shot at a homicide scene. Our No. 1 priority is to find out what happened,â€￾ the police spokesman said. “Right now we don’t know what happened.â€￾

Clark County spokesman Erik Pappa said the 4-year-old and 9-year-old boys were in the custody of child protective services because they didn’t have an adult caregiver.

Clark County Department of Family Services officials planned to try to locate other relativesbefore placing the boys together with a foster family, department spokeswoman Christine Skorupski said.

Police cordoned off the entire block near the home during their investigation.

Officials said the boy was uninjured when he arrived at Mabel Hoggard Elementary School, where his older sister also was enrolled.

Principal Celese Rayford declined comment.

Clark County School District spokeswoman Amanda Fulkerson wouldn’t describe how or what the boy told school officials, or whether other students were told what happened.

School administrators quickly notified police about the boy’s story and began mobilizing its crisis response team to help students process the tragedy, Fulkerson said.

The campus, with about 450 students in grades kindergarten through 5, was “struggling to sort out emotions and details of a tragedy that claimed the life of a student at home this weekend,â€￾ she said.

I hate fucking adults. Now we have 2 kids with no mother. Instead they are left alone and with a clear and vivid & memory of their dead mother and sister.

Now I wonder why the boys weren't also killed. Grateful that for what ever reason, he didn't kill the boys.

I was wondering the same thing. Why kill his daughter but spare his son's? Then again he's not an offical suspect and I wonder how he got the conk on the nogging. I wonder if his wife did it trying to fight for her or her daughter's life. However; if he did do the 9 year old boy knows. He knows what happened and I'm sure he told the police but they are being tight lipped at this stage. The probably want to make sure the boy is interviewed by someone who specializes in children's testimony. I wonder if the dad sent him off to school or if she just went on with his routine as usual on his own. How scary that must have been the boys who witnessed this and survived. This story is really fucked up.

I'm willing to wager a guess that his head injury is the result of a failed attempt at pulling off a murder/suicide: gunshot wound.

I just don't see a stranger entering and offing two females and attempting to off a male, but leaving two other males totally unharmed. Also no mention of the police looking for any suspects etc.

I agree with you there. Even if he was attempting a murder suicide it still does not explain why he shot his daughter and not his son's. That just seems hinky to me. And why kill everybody in the house with a 4 & 9 year old to fend for themselves like that with both adults and his big sister dead. I know there is more to the story. It just seems horribly cruel the way this went down for both the daughter and mother and the boys.

My "more to the story" guess involving why only the two females were killed would be:

1. Maybe there was some molestation involving the daughter and that's why dad only took out mom and her.
2. He was a psycho that hated women.

10-year-old killed in double-homicide died from assault injuries, coroner says
Authorities have released the cause of death for one of the victims in a double-homicide Monday in a central Las Vegas home.

Ten-year-old Karla Martinez, who was found dead with her mother, died from multiple blunt-force injuries suffered in an assault, according to the Clark County Coroner's Office. The coroner ruled the girl’s death a homicide.

The cause and manner of death for her mother, 38-year-old Ignacia Martinez, have not been released.

A 9-year-old boy on Monday morning went to Hoggard Elementary School and reported that his mother and sister were dead inside the family's home in the 1000 block of Robin Street, Metro Police said.

Police found the two victims' bodies along with an unharmed 4-year-old boy and a man suffering from undisclosed injuries. Authorities have not released the man's identity, nor have they offered many details about what was found inside the home.

Detectives from Metro's homicide section are continuing their investigation. Police have not reported any arrests in the case.

Officers have established a steady presence monitoring the home crime scene.

That first one never crossed my mind but would make perfect sense. Mom found out about the abuse and confronts dad. Dad knows he is busted so he takes out the only people who can put him away for his crime. Then maybe he feels bad and hurts himself? Or did mom do a little damage before she died. Interesting theory.

Girl, 10, killed in Vegas attack was sexually assaulted, police say

LAS VEGAS – A 10-year-old girl was sexually assaulted before she died in a bludgeoning attack that also killed her mother and left her father with critical head injuries in a blood-splattered Las Vegas home, police said Thursday.
The discovery that fifth-grader Karla Martinez was sexually assaulted expands the investigation of the brutal attack, Las Vegas police Lt. Clinton Nichols said. Officers went to the home and found the bodies after the girl's 9-year-old brother arrived at school Monday saying that his mom and sister were dead. A 4-year-old boy was also found unharmed in the house.

No suspects have been identified, and Nichols asked for patience, saying rumors were complicating the investigation.

Although police said Monday that evidence didn't suggest an intruder was responsible for the attacks or that a suspect was on the loose, Nichols later said investigators hadn't been able to determine exactly what happened in the modest three-bedroom home, or when.

"We've ruled out no one. We are looking at every possibility," Nichols said.

Nichols said Thursday that investigators were being deliberately slow and methodical.

"We want to do everything right," he said. "This case needs to be solved -- the brutal nature of the attacks on a family in their own home."

Authorities found the girl and the mother, Ignacia Martinez, 38, beaten to death with a blunt instrument in separate bedrooms.

The father, Arturo Martinez, 39, was injured in the living room. The murder weapon has not been identified.

The bodies bore clear evidence of an attack with a blunt object, Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy said. He classified the deaths as homicides.

Arturo Martinez remained hospitalized Thursday at University Medical Center in Las Vegas with what authorities initially described as a severe head injury. Police said they weren't immediately able to interview him because of his injuries.

The two boys were in protective custody with the Clark County Department of Family Services, where Nichols said child forensic counselors have spoken with the boys but police detectives had not.

"We're not going to push them," the police lieutenant said. "You can only imagine what they saw."

Next-door neighbor and family friend Mark Groenert on Thursday characterized Arturo Martinez as a hard-working electrician who coached boxing in his spare time, kept physically fit and sometimes had disputes with another neighbor about parking.

"There was an altercation Saturday night, Arturo came home really late and one of their trucks was parked in front of his driveway," Groenert told The Associated Press. "Arturo hit the horn. He just laid on it until somebody came out. They got into a yelling match."

A Spanish-speaking man who answered the door Thursday at the neighboring home declined immediate comment in English and did not respond later to a telephone message in Spanish.

Nichols said police were aware of what he characterized as an "ongoing conflict" with some neighbors, but said investigators found nothing that they believed precipitated the deadly attack.

Groenert said he used to enjoy tequila and carne asada in the Martinez backyard, and his own grandson sometimes played with the two boys next door.

He said he saw police going into the house on Monday and Arturo Martinez shuffling out the front door before collapsing into unconsciousness.

Groenert said he could tell from questions that police later asked him and his wife that investigators suspected a sex attack.

He said he couldn't believe Arturo Martinez would harm his family, and said he thought the attacker must have been someone from outside the house.

Pics of murdered mom and daughter

Ignacia Martinez, 38, and her daughter Karla Martinez, 10, were found dead after the mother’s 9-year-old son went to school and informed officials that they were dead at home.

It wasn't the father. It was a random violent asshat.

A 22-year-old man is being charged in the savage killing of a mom and daughter in Las Vegas after a week-long man hunt.

Bryan Clay is alleged to have bludgeoned to death 10-year-old Karla Martinez and her mother, Ignacia Martinez at their Robin Street home last Saturday, in an apparent random crime.

Karla’s father, Arturo Martinez, 39, was critically injured in the bludgeoning attack and remains in hospital with head injuries.

Ignacia and Arturo’s 9-year-old son tragically discovered the slain bodies of his mother and sister, going into school and telling teachers at his Mabel Hoggard Elementary School that they had been killed by his dad.

Police later rejected the allegation.

Karla had been raped prior to her death, Las Vegas Metro police said in a press conference on Friday.

Clay is alleged to have carried out a separate sexual assault, against a 50-year-old woman the day before the bloody murders.

Metro Lt. Rob Lundquist said Clay began chasing the woman at around 2am on April 15, grabing her and dragging her into a desert area and violently attacking her in what became a sexual assault.

Police said they are treating the crimes as unrelated and do not believe Clay had any relationship with his victims prior to the attacks.

Lt. Lundquist said:: ‘This is the kind of case that goes on that they write movies about and I don’t say that as to be an entertainment factor.

'I'm saying this was a savage, heinous crime.’

[...]

Clay was arrested on a child abuse charge and is to be re-booked as soon as possible on charges of sexual assault and murder.

The murders have sent shockwaves through the community, especially at the Real KO Boxing Club in North Las Vegas, where both Arturo and Ignacia Martinez worked and were viewed as positive role models.

Those who knew them say that the couple, both trained fighters, would not have gone quietly if attacked or robbed.

Felipe Lazos, a 16-year-old who trained at Real KO Boxing, told the Review-Journal that the attacker would have 'had to be a good fighter'.

Neighbor Lucinda Jackson-Griffin said she had never heard disturbances at the home until she was woken by gunshots on Monday morning, but police are now saying that a gun was not used in the killings.
[...]

Animal control officers arrived to remove a dog from the house. An officer said it was not harmed but had been taken away as no one was there to care for it.
[...]

Police said the two surviving children from the attack remain with Child Protective Services.

Wow! This is just so sad. And scary! To think that some random asshole that you've never seen before could just come in and kill your family for no reason. I just don't get why someone would do that. Other than some people are just born wrong.

Cell phone records, clothing, DNA evidence and a fingerprint all link a 22-year-old Las Vegas man to the killings of a mother and daughter and the sexual assault of a woman, according to Metro police.

Bryan Clay, 22, will make his first court appearance Tuesday in connection with the April 15 attacks.
[...]

The killings happened after a 50-year-old woman was sexually assaulted near the home at the intersection of Tonopah and Vegas drives, according to the arrest report.

The woman fought back, hitting the attacker in the head with a rock.

Police said Clay took the woman's cell phone and escaped, but left behind a baseball cap.

Blood on the woman's jacket belonged to Clay, according to police, and he had marks on his face indicating he'd been struck with a rock.

Several calls made from the woman's phone led detectives to friends of Clay, who identified him by his nickname, "Junior," according to the report.

When confronted with the evidence, police said, Clay didn't deny the assault took place, but said he did not remember what happened and, "he must have done what detectives were saying he did."

In the report, Clay told a story about taken Ecstasy and smoking a PCP-laced cigarette before falling asleep at his brother's house.

He claimed he woke up the next day to find another person's cell phone sitting next to him
, police said.

Clay also did not deny his involvement in the Martinez killings, and made several comments that "detectives should have killed him instead of arresting him and that he wanted them to kill him now instead of taking him to jail," police wrote in the report.

The bodies of Ignacia and Karla Martinez were found April 16 after a 9-year-old boy told adults at Hoggard Elementary School that his mother and sister had been killed.

Both women had been sexually assaulted, police said, and DNA evidence linked the attacks to Clay.

"[The boy] also reported his father had two holes in his head, was acting strange and there was blood all over the home," according to the report.

The child's father, Arturo Martinez, was also found injured at the house. He suffered "at least three separate blows to the head with a blunt object," police said.

Martinez is being treated at University Medical Center and has been unable to communicate with police or doctors.

Another child was found inside the house unharmed.

Detectives said they found a jacket belonging to Clay on the bed of Arturo Martinez's pickup truck in the driveway.

At the time of Clay's arrest, he had an outstanding warrant for felony child abuse, according to police.

Report: Murder suspect accused of prior attacks on pregnant teen girlfriend
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Police say 22-year-old Bryan Devonte Clay is someone we'll be hearing a lot about in the days to come. Clay is behind bars charged in the horrific murders of a mother and daughter.

But those murders aren't the only violent crimes he's accused of that night. Police reports and court records reveal insight on who Clay is, and how police tracked him down.

The crimes Clay is charged with are the kind everyone is afraid of: horribly violent and totally random. An entire family targeted for no apparent reason, and a suspect high on drugs and alcohol- whose warning signs began months earlier.

Las Vegas madman pleads not guilty in heinous claw hammer murders
22-year-old pummeled mother, daughter to death, left husband in coma in brutal, drug-fueled home invasion
A 22-year-old Las Vegas man pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to killing a woman and her 10-year-old daughter in a savage claw hammer attack last month.

Bryan Clay pummeled Ignacia (Yadira) Martinez, 38, and Karla Martinez, 10, to death with the tool at their northwest Las Vegas home during a booze, ecstasy and PCP-fuelled rampage on April 15, prosecutors said.

Both were sexually assaulted, prosecutors said, and Arturo Martinez, the husband and father of the family, was also bludgeoned in the head during the hom invasion attack, but survived.

He remains critical condition at a Las Vegas hospital.

Police said Clay didn’t know the victims.

Hours before, prosecutor said, Clay also tried to rape a 50-year-old woman in a patch of grass just blocks from the Martinez family’s home but she fought him off with a rock.

The two bodies were found on April 16 after the family's 9-year-old son walked four blocks to Hoggard Elementary School and told a teacher that his mom and sister were dead, The Las Vegas Sun newspaper reported.

The boy’s 4-year-old brother was also spared in the attacks. Neither of them were identified.

The accused madman was arrested on Friday on a warrant for hitting and kicking his 16-year-old pregnant girlfriend during attacks in February and March, the Sun said.

He was booked on the slaying and sex assaults later that day after cops matched his DNA with some found at the crime scene.

Clay appeared in court on Wednesday shackled and in a navy blue prison outfit, The Las Vegas Review Journal reported.

He told Justice of the Peace Joe Sciscento that he understood the charges against him, but otherwise said little.

Following the hearing, Clark County prosecutor said he may seek the death penalty, the Review Journal said.

“This is certainly one of the most serious cases to come to my office since I became the district attorney,â€￾ District Attorney Steve Wolfson said.

Clay faces a raft of charges, including murder, kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and sexual assault with a minor, as well as domestic battery and robbery charges stemming from the attacks on his ex-girlfriend.

Bryan Devonte Clay Jr. appears in court on Wednesday, May 2, in Las Vegas.

Child abuse charges remain against claw hammer killings suspect

A district judge Tuesday refused to dismiss child abuse charges against Bryan Clay in the beating of his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

Defense lawyers for the 22-year-old had asked for the dismissal, saying the child abuse charges were being "trumped up" by prosecutors to hang heavier charges on him.

Clay was originally charged with five counts, including two domestic battery charges. But those charges were replaced by a grand jury indictment in June that charged Clay with two counts of child abuse and neglect and one count of robbery in connection with two assaults on his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, who was pregnant with his child. The baby has since been born.

In making his decision, Judge James Bixler said Tuesday if the victim had been 18, the domestic violence charge might have been appropriate, but the victim was a minor so prosecutors sought the appropriate charge.

[...]
Prosecutors have asked for a speedy trial in the case, hoping to gain a conviction that could be used as an aggravating factor against Clay during a potential death penalty hearing in an ongoing murder case against him.

In that case, authorities said Clay, while drunk and high on drugs, sexually assaulted a 50-year-old woman near the intersection of Vegas and Tonopah drives before going to the home at 1016 Robin St.

Once inside, investigators say, Clay used a claw hammer to pummel Arturo Martinez, 39, and sexual assault and beat to death both his wife, Ignacia "Yadira" Martinez, 38, and daughter, Karla Martinez, 10. Arturo Martinez survived the attack.

The couple's two sons, then 9 and 4 years old, were not attacked.

Clay remained at the Clark County Detention Center without bail on the murder charges.

A trial date has not been set in the child abuse case, though Bixler said he hoped to have it done by January. The murder case is set for trial July 24.

Lawyers for a 27-year-old man accused of raping and killing a woman and her 10-year-old daughter told jurors Tuesday that he should be acquitted, criticizing the value of forensic evidence against him.

Bryan Clay is facing the death penalty for the April 2012 slayings of 38-year-old Ignacia “Yadira” Martinez and her daughter Karla.

Prosecutors said Clay broke into the family’s Las Vegas home in the early morning hours of April 15, using a claw hammer to attack the two along with the woman’s husband, Arturo Martinez, while two boys, ages 9 and 5, were kept alive inside the bloody house.

Clay, who was arrested within 10 days, has said he was drunk and high on Ecstasy and PCP at the time and has no recollection of the killings, or a sexual assault on a 50-year-old woman that occurred within hours of the murders. Clay is also charged with committing that assault.

Homicide detectives have called the case one of the worst they’ve encountered. Prosecutors moved swiftly for capital punishment.

Defense attorney Tony Sgro questioned whether the sexual assault victim had picked the right suspect out of a lineup. The lawyer also pointed to minimal fingerprints linked to Clay at the Martinez home, along with a lack of bloody shoe prints leading away from the murder scene.

“In seeking truth you have to get both sides of a story,” Sgro said, quoting the late broadcaster Walter Cronkite.

Arturo Martinez fought off the attacker but suffered severe head wounds. The couple’s two sons were left alive inside the house at 1016 Robin St.

When 9-year-old Christopher Martinez awoke on Sunday, April 15, 2012, he saw blood everywhere. He hugged his father and tried to care for his 5-year-old brother, doing his best to shelter the boy from the grisly scene.

The following morning, he went to Hoggard Elementary School, where his fourth-grade teacher, Candace Wagner, noticed him sobbing.

She asked him what was wrong, she testified, as the prosecution’s first witness in the trial, which is expected to last upward of a month.

The 9-year-old put his head in his hands and told her: “My mom and sister are dead. They’ve been murdered.”

School police took Christopher home, where he watched as his father was rushed away in an ambulance. The younger boy, Alejandro, was still inside the home, crying.

Thats horrible. And he still went to school...not knowing what else to do. Tragic.

At 9 my kids could dial 911, and I fully believe they would have just owing to the sight of blood. Tragic he was never taught to seek help.

Nice wording on behalf of the defense attorney.

“MINIMAL fingerprints found”. :rolleyes::rolleyes:

This poor 9 year old spent a whole day attempting to shield his younger brother from the carnage. Then dutifully went to school on Monday.

This case screams death penalty. Thankfully, and I never understand why since it isn’t legally a defense, he’s using the “I was high and on PCP” excuse.

The whole story is tragic.

Shock and trauma does different things to different people. I'm a first responder and am clear-headed in trauma situations.

...until it's my blood. ;) Hand in a table saw proved that.

I want to know why it took over 5 fucking years for this to go to trial. I truly believe justice delay is justice denied.

Holy moley what an utter rollercoaster.

Bryan Clay needs to fry.
The level of brutality coupled with the sheer number of crimes he has committed is mind boggling.
Clearly he would and has reoffended while showing no capacity to control himself and be part of society in a positive way.
Images of him are sickening with his sneer and clear lack of remorse.

I would love to know how the boys, the dad and Clays ex gf & baby are doing.
This case is just fascinating to me.

5 years for this to drag out though is just wrong.
There seems to be more than sufficient evidence not just to convict,
but to extinguish his destructive flame.
Snuff him out like a candle in a hurricane.
Allow the community to find some peace and closure.

Bryan Clay, convicted of raping and murdering a mother and her young daughter in 2012, took the witness stand Monday morning with a statement, ready to ask jurors to spare his life.

Clay, 27, hadn’t spoken publicly about the crimes in more than five years. But on the fourth day of his trial’s penalty phase, he was ready to break his silence, and say more than what was on the paper he clutched.

“If it wasn’t for my attorneys and my daughter, I would be begging you all for death,” he said. “If my mom wasn’t sitting back there.”

Last week, the same all-women jury convicted him of beating Ignacia “Yadira” Martinez, 38, and her 10-year-old daughter, Karla, with a claw hammer in an April 2012 attack that nearly killed the woman’s husband.

Prosecutors are seeking a death sentence. The jury began deciding on the ultimate punishment Monday afternoon.

After the murders, Clay told police that he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol and had no recollection of the killings.

Prosecutor Pamela Weckerly told the jury Clay’s past actions had foreshadowed his crimes — he had groped and harassed a girl in high school and hit his pregnant girlfriend for disrespecting” him.

Weckerly told jurors Clay was facing the consequences for his crimes.

“Up until now, the only real impact to his life is a loss of freedom,” she said. “But he didn’t have to clean up any blood. He didn’t have to tell his brother that his mom is dead. He didn’t have to wonder what could have been for his daughter. He didn’t have to deal with grieving children.”

Prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo said Clay’s daughter has a different last name than he does, and that the jury has “no idea what kind of father he is.”

He played a jail phone conversation, in which Clay can be heard telling a man on the phone, “Man, listen, I should be out in November,” he said. “The prosecution, they have like no case, they can’t put me at the crime scene.”

Clay goes on, “It’s about what they’re trying to paint,” he said. “But other than that, I don’t give a damn.”

DiGiacomo stopped the recording.

“Is there actually any evidence of remorse whatsoever?” he asked. “He made choices to do what he did, and today’s the judgment day.”

Clay said he hopes to finish school while he’s in prison and participate in work programs.

“I will never forget my daughter’s voice. I live to watch her grow,” he said. “I want to live my life with my daughter and give her anything, even if it’s just love for the rest of my life.”

Clay ended his statement by telling the jury: “I heard God’s forgiveness is limitless, and I hope God can forgive me. I hope that everybody else can forgive me.”

Bryan Clay was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole Tuesday for raping and murdering a woman and her young daughter in a 2012 claw hammer attack.

Prosecutors asked the jury to impose a death sentence on Clay, 27, who was sentenced by the same jury that convicted him last week in the beating deaths of Ignacia “Yadira” Martinez, 38, and her 10-year-old daughter, Karla.

Arturo Martinez, Yadira’s husband, who survived the attack, said he believed justice was served for his wife and daughter.

“What Bryan Clay did to me and my family, nobody deserves this,” said Martinez, who was not in the courtroom Tuesday and watched the livestream online. “I don’t want him to go back to the street and mess (with) any other family.

Martinez said the penalty is the consequence for Clay’s “past life.”

Here's a pic of the father, Arturo. You can see the scars, and he might be blind in one eye, but he survived and appears to have made a significant recovery.

I can't imagine why the jury gave the scumbag LWOP instead of the death penalty, he raped and killed a 10 year old girl and raped and killed her mother. He beat them to death with a hammer. He beat the father into a coma, and damaged him for life. He had numerous violent priors. He showed zero remorse. If anyone deserved death, he did. That jury was composed of morons.

Here's the scumbag, zero remorse maniac killer:

I like to think they get to suffer more that way, but I'd just as soon he just gtfo the planet right now. Even if they had given the death penalty, who knows how long it would've been before he finally got the needle.
