GERMANTOWN, Wisconsin - 37-year-old Charles Avey, Sr. walked into the sheriff’s department admitting that he had strangled his 14-year-old step-son to death. He was not lying. Police found Cody Reetz dead in a minivan parked in a Wal-mart parking lot. The motive? He was mad at his wife and wanted her to suffer like he says she has made him suffer. Police feel Avery’s actions were in response to domestic abuse charges his wife had filed on him stemming from a hammer attack. Court records show Avery has five felony counts pending against him, has a history of writing bad checks and a former wife filed a restraining order against him. Germantown police are recommending a first-degree intentional homicide charge and state the killing was premeditated. The sad thing about these types of stories is that Avery will get exactly what he wanted. If I were the mother of Cody, or the biological father, I would be technically insane at this point.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY – On Monday, 64-year-old detention deputy Kenneth Moon was inside a jail pod with 62 other inmates at Orient Road Jail. Without warning, 24-year-old inmate Douglas Burden attacked him. After charging Moon and bringing him to the ground, Burden began choking him from behind. That’s when other inmates stepped in. One inmate took Moon’s radio and called for emergency assistance while others pulled Burden off the deputy. Burden was in jail on DUI and drug charges and now faces battery on a law enforcement officer charges. No word on what prompted the attack, but read on to see video of it.

“The response of the other inmates in this case I think speaks volumes as to the fact that we treat these men and women that are held in our facilities with a lot of respect,” said HCSO Col. Jim Previtera. He feels the other inmates saved Moon’s life (then why no attempted murder charges?) and says he also thanked those inmates in person. He’s sending a letter of thanks to the attorney’s of the inmates’ who aided Moon that they can use in their court cases.

SYRACUSE, New York – When Joanne Cichy returned home from trick-or-treating with her kids Saturday, she could not find her kitten. It wasn’t until she checked her digital camera the next day that she realized what had happened to it. On the camera was video of her live-in boyfriend, 22-year-old Rascell Williams, using a belt to hang the kitten from a door frame. The video shows the kitten struggling before going motionless and Williams walking in and out of frame. Williams was charged with unjustifiable animal cruelty. The 4-month-old kitten was later found alive under the porch.

Cleveland, Ohio – On Thursday, police went to the home of convicted rapist Anthony Sowell, 50, to execute an arrest and search warrant stemming from a rape and felonious assault against a woman in early October. Police did not find Sowell at home when they got there, but they did find something else interesting; the bodies of two women decomposing on the third floor of the home. On Friday, police returned and recovered four more bodies. One was found in a grave under the basement stairs, two in the crawlspace and another in a grave outside of the home. Anthony Sowell was arrested walking down the street near the home on Sunday after police received a tip that he was in the area. Sowell was convicted for a 1989 rape for which he was imprisoned from 1990 to 2005. Eighteen-year-old Melissa Taub saw Sowell on the street every day. “He was nice, but he gave me the creeps,” Taub said. She said Sowell once tried to lure her into his house, but she didn’t go. “He scared me, and I didn’t trust him. Some angel must have been watching over me because If I’d have gone into that house, one of those bodies could have been me, one of those graves could have been mine.”

The coroner who performed the autopsies on the bodies told CNN that they all appeared to have been strangled. He also added that their decomposing bodies could have been lying there for “weeks, if not months or years.” 19 Action News has learned there are two women currently missing who lived within several blocks of Anthony Sowell. Janice Webb, 49-years-old, went missing on June 3rd 2009 and Nancy Cobb went missing on April 24th 2009. If you think you may have information regarding a missing operson and the Sowell investigation, you can go to the 4th District Police Headquarters located at 9333 Kinsman Ave everyday from 7am to 7pm to talk to detectives. You are encouraged to bring a photo and biographical information of the missing person.

One woman claims she is a victim of Sowell, and lucky to be alive.  She claims Sowell asked her to “drink beer” with him and when she refused he “punched her in the face and dragged her to his house.” She fought back and was able to escape the home, however police were slow to investigate her claims because Sowell reported that she had in fact assaulted him.  Ten months later, September 22, another woman was raped and strangled inside the house on Imperial Avenue. She told police she passed out and woke up in her own urine and feces but surprisingly, Sowell let her leave. Here is some video of the first victim talking about what happened to her.

ST. MARTINS, Missouri – Here we go, another little girl has vanished while walking home. Maybe this will end differently than the Somer Thompson disappearance. At 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten was walking the quarter mile home from a friend’s house in the 600 block of Route D south of St. Martins. She never arrived at her home. The Cole County Sheriff’s Department has issued an Endangered Person Advisory. Olten is a white, 9-year-old female. She is 5′ 2″ and 108 lbs. with brown hair, brown eyes and a fair complexion with physical marks. She was last seen wearing a pink scarf, pink shirt and pink sweater and blue jeans with white sneakers. She was also carrying a cell phone. The sheriff’s department contacted the cell phone provider, AT&T, who “pinged” the cell phone to triangulate its location. AT&T put the cell phone’s location deep in the woods near Elizabeth’s home. The girl’s family members said she is afraid of the woods and the dark.

On Wednesday night, the Missouri State Highway Patrol searched for Elizabeth using a helicopter with a thermal imaging radar. Today, 60 people resumed the search focusing on a section of woods several hundred yards in diameter, which police had narrowed by triangulating the girl’s cell phone location. The battery had died by this morning and an uneven terrain, high brush and soaking weather are hampering the search effort.

“If you go to Iowa and look at a flat piece of farmland that’s 140 acres, you go, well it’s not that big.’ You translate that to Missouri and you use the same thing, you walk a long time to cover that same amount of land,” White said. “It’s muddy out there now. It’s difficult terrain, it’s difficult weather.”, said Cole County Sheriff Greg White.

And before anyone starts bashing her parents for her walking that stretch of road, a commentor over on Topix noted that the girl’s parents were not alerted that she was being sent home from her friends house. So before we get into that territory, let’s wait for some more information to come in.

Update 10-23-09 An older juvenile led authorities to Elizabeth Olten’s body, deep in the woods near where an exhaustive search for the child was under way for much of the day. Little information on this other juvenile aside from them being described as a “person of interest.”

By now everyone knows who the 15-year-old suspect is. She is the older sister of the girl Olten was visiting. Already people are pouring over everything she has said or written on any of the myriad of social accounts she has. These are her alleged Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Sing Snap and disabled Youtube account (cached version here) which was on Nancy Grace tonight. Specifically her hobbies of “cutting, killing people.” This will be interesting. She seemed like a normal teen chick to me. I’m curious if this was an accidental death that she tried to cover up. In the Youtube video it shows her getting her brothers to touch an electric fence.

The following are simply rumors gathered from emails being sent and chat logs being posted. But supposedly this was a planned murder, a hole dug earlier. She also had help burying the body. She had cut the Olten’s neck and wrists purely to see if she could get away with it. None of this is confirmed, of course. But hey, it’s out there and I’m curious how close tot he truth it is. All stuff we will find out in the future.

Here is the mugshot of 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante the teen girl charged with strangling and slitting the throat of Elizabeth Olten. She’s a sick puppy and has shown some disturbing behavior for years, including cutting and an attempted suicide at 13.

INDIANTOWN, Florida – 45-year-old Terry Bell was housed in the Martin Correctional Institution serving a life sentence for sexual battery on a victim under the age of 12. His cellmate was 29-year-old Ricky Silva who was serving life in prison for robbery, carjacking and kidnapping. At some point Bell thought it would be pretty cool idea to jack-off to a photograph of one of Silva’s underage relatives. Silva caught him doing it and was not real happy about it. At around 2:40 a.m Wednesday, a corrections officer was conducting his hourly cell checks when he found Bell dead on the bottom bunk with a black shoestring wrapped tightly around his neck. Ricky Silva admitted to killing Bell and has been charged with first degree murder.

Boston, MA – Officials have not released many details in this story, but the ones that are out there only lead to more questions.  Back on September 24th, just a month after turning 100 years old, Elizabeth Barrow was found dead in her bed at the nursing home she had lived in for the past 4 years.  Sounds about right, huh?  Well, not really.  She was found with a plastic bag over head and even though there were no signs of a struggle, her death was ruled a homicide by manual strangulation.  Her son says that Barrows was healthy and vibrant despite her age.  The family had taken her out to lunch and shopping just the day before her body was found.  Barrow had a female roommate who was in her 90s, but there is no word on any witness statements.  Considering the son is not blaming the facility, singing it’s praises even, and everyone is remaining tight lipped I am wondering if officials are keeping quiet because they in fact do have a suspect in mind.  Whatever the case, I am anxious to hear how this turns out.  It must suck to live that long only to be denied a peaceful death in your sleep.

Casselberry, FL – Nioshka Bello is considered by neighbors to be an excellent and doting mother. That’s weird, because based on the fact that her mugshot and story are being featured here on the Dreamin’ Demon, you gotta figure that the chick is lacking in the most basic of parenting skills. Nioshka used to have a 2-year-old daughter named Janessa Sandoval, who, according to neighbors, was very well kept, doted upon, and happy. That happy little girl is dead – her mommy strangled her with a bra. Yes, Nioshka managed to rid this earth of one more toddler, but failed miserably when it came to taking her own life.

Nioshka later admitted to strangling the toddler with a bra and her own hands, but failed to explain why. She also failed to explain why it took 12 whole hours to report the child’s death to anyone. According to the arrest affidavit, after calling 911 to report the death of her child, Nioshka attempted to take her own life by downing 20 Benadryl tablets and some Tylenol. Nioshka was sent to the hospital in critical condition – Janessa was sent to the coroner.

Responding officers noted that Nioshka seemed to be detached and disinterested in the condition of her daughter. Neighbors, however, say that when she was taken from the apartment, she looked distraught. Neighbors think Nioshka OD’d because she was upset and not because she did anything wrong. Well of course she’s upset! She just ruined a perfectly good piece of lingerie with a toddler’s throat. Duh…

According to Nioshka’s mother, she has a history of (obviously failed) suicide attempts – the last time she tried to off herself was in high school. (You would think that after 2 or 3 tries you would be able to succeed). Instead of opting for 20 Benadryl tablets and some Tylenol, Nioshka should have opted to go the same route she chose for her daughter – death by bra. Or better yet, death by speeding semi-truck.

New York, NY – This is not the week for smart beautiful women.  First Annie Le and now Andree “Sara” Bejjani.  While most people strive to be wealthy, attractive, educated, and successful, and very few achieve it, Bejjani was all that and more.  She seemed to be living the dream life.  Just having been hired as a VP at a US based property investment firm, she moved from Dubai into a condo in a luxury hotel near Central Park a year ago. Unfortunately, having it all got Bejjani some unwanted attention and her dream life ended in a nightmare.  Derrick Praileau, using a maid’s key card, walked into her luxury condo early Saturday morning and viciously murdered her.

Praileau, a married father of two who held a manager position on the housekeeping staff at the luxury hotel, showed up an hour before his shift on Saturday morning drunk.  Key card access records show Praileau entering Bejjani’s condo at around 6 am Saturday morning.  It is alleged that he entered her home, held a knife to her throat while she lay in bed and attempted to sexually assault her.  Bejjani fought off the attack and was stabbed and strangled.  A maid entering the condo later found Bejjani’s body on the kitchen floor.  She was face down, nude from the waist down, her nightgown had been pulled up, her throat was slashed, she had a jump rope tied around her neck and there was a 10 inch serrated bread knife stuck in the back of her neck.  The official cause of death was strangulation, but those details lead me to believe she fought like a hellcat.  I would expect nothing less from a woman like her.

Key card records and video surveillance show Praileau returning to the condo later in he day in attempt to clean up the scene.  Confronted with the evidence, which as far as I am concerned could not be any better unless he had filmed and recorded the entire thing himself, Praileau confessed.  He’s confessed to the murder, but refuses to admit any to any rape.  Whether the sexual assault actually took place is not known at this time, though it is believe that was his motivation for entering.

What pisses me off about this story is that this woman probably worked hard to attain her station in life only to have some psychotic fuck to come along and snatch it from her like an old ladies purse.  Not only that, he was in a  position of trust with access to the many homes in the place where he had been working for 12 years.  12 YEARS.  And to top it all off, he has a wife and two kids at home.

His explanation? “I lost it.”  Bejjani’s family will take very little solace in that explanation.  Yeah, you lost ALOT asshole and you took much much more.

Quincy, Massachusetts – “City of Legends”and “Birthplace of the American Dream” are just a couple examples of nicknames for this historic community in the Southeastern part of the state. The city is divided up into many different established neighborhoods with individual histories and characteristics. Scrolling through the names and descriptions of these sections, one clearly gets a great sense of pride and community spirit. No where could I find the area that might house the uber rich or the extremely impoverished. I’m pretty sure they’re not closely mixed though. Where do the really twisted fuckers live in Quincy and what do they do to get their jollies off in such a stodgy town? The closest I could come to answering that question was the story of Joseph Beatty and his little experiment with necrophilia.

Oh yeah. I was excited to come across this sick fuck. We’ve got a little bit of everything encompassed here:  domestic violence, strangulation, blood, a knife, attempted suicide, and a body devoid of life that had been screwed.  Joseph Beatty is a plethora of unbelievable news.

Neighbors of his victim, 33 year-old Mary Beaton, state loud arguments were not an uncommon sound emitting from her apartment as it seemed as though she and Joseph must have had a lot to say to each other and subconsciously wanted witnesses. The arguments were loud and sounded violent. And per witness accounts, the neighbor’s fears were realized when Mary Beaton was found dead in her apartment.

Police received a call from Boston Medical Center where Joseph’s sister was sitting at his side as he was recovering from a suicide attempt. Police found and searched his vehicle and they recovered a bloody knife he is believed to have used to harm himself. He also allegedly told the tale of strangling his girlfriend in her apartment, laying her on the bed, removing all of her clothes and screwing her. Nice. Touching. He’s all remorseful now though. And despite his touch of mental issues, he’s really a nice guy and would do anything for anyone. Yes, they’re already saying it. But he’s a thoughtful psycho…after he was all finished, he removed two crucifixes and placed one on each side of her head.

Although the authorities are awaiting autopsy results, Joseph Beatty is being held in conjunction with her death. But he’s so nice. How sad.

Cheyenne, WY – Southeast Wyoming is hell. It’s a gray, desolate, nightmarish wasteland full of howling wind and the ugliest, most desperate shrubbery in the world. When the wind isn’t sucking all rational thought from your skull like a passenger jet with the windows blown out, I’m almost certain that it actually rains road kill. It’s the least populous state in the nation, which means most people have chosen slightly lesser hells like Bakersfield, CA, or even Delaware. Stop and ask a local why the fuck you just saw a sign with a picture of a rabbit with antlers growing out of it’s head. They jokingly call this taxidermy-for-tourism‘s-sake a “jackalope”, but I call it mutilating at least two corpses. It is a place that warps the mind, sickens the soul and ruthlessly chaps the lips of any who dare enter it. That’s why whenever some horrible, bloody tale makes it’s way from those barren hills and into the news, I can’t say I’m all that surprised. Even when Joy Hofer shot her husband, strangled their son and killed herself. Did I mention all the road kill?

The Hofers lived in the city of Cheyenne, known as “the Magic City of the Plains”. The town was really just a few square miles of filthy shanties, whorehouses and rodeo halls until the U.S. Air Force purchased the land from the dinosaurs in 1865 – but what is this, City Confidential? Like I said, the ironically named Joy Hofer evidently shot her husband Kelly Hofer before strangling their two year old son, Gunnar. According to autopsy results, the little boy had lidocaine on his face and in his bloodstream, as if the mother had somehow attempted to numb or anesthetize him prior to strangulation. Joy then killed herself, in a manner yet to be revealed. The bodies were found on July 25. No motive, no note, nothing. Laramie County Coroner Marty Luna was likewise baffled when he told the press “And that’s part of what I’m continuing in my investigation: that there has to be some other aspect as to why this occurred,”. Some other aspect. A secret love affair? A pending divorce? Spousal abuse? Or was it simply residence in the twenty two square mile Amityville Horror that is Cheyenne, WY? We did touch on the heaps and heaps of road kill, right?

The sad truth of the matter is that shit like this seems to happen every day in communities all over America, in both rural and urban areas. Places without high winds or “jackalopes”. I’m just poking back at Wyoming for all those long drives through the state up to Montana. I guess it’s not that bad, certainly not bad enough to make someone commit murder. It’s not only an ignorant, silly notion, but it shifts blame away from the actual killer; in this case, Joy Hofer. Southeast Wyoming isn’t some black nexus of harsh realities, road kill and bad taxidermy – it’s just a place like any other. These tragedies are usually born of the soul, not the soil. Frank Readick, voice of the Shadow in the old days of radio drama used to ask: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows…”. Of course he did. Frank was from Philadelphia – don’t get me started on that horrible little shit-hole…

Chisago County, MN – It’s not clear when Douglas and Candice Ouellette’s marriage started to fall apart, but by June, Candice had obviously had enough, and filed for a protection order against her husband. On the application, she stated that Douglas had been suffering from depression and suicidal tendencies for quite some time. She wrote that on June 17, he held a gun to his head and told her, “I want you to see this so you remember for the rest of your life.” Candice took the gun from his hand – he whipped out a second one and held it to his head. She called 911 and Douglas was taken to a hospital. She decided to file for the restraining order when she discovered his normally empty guns were loaded – each one with five bullets. The number of bullets equaled the number of members in their little family. Candice filed for divorce on June 29 – Douglas was granted visitation with his children, and access to his shop and outbuildings on the property during the day, but was ordered not to enter the house. He was allowed to call or e-mail his wife once a day. He couldn’t have his guns back until he underwent a psychological evaluation. As of Wednesday night, the marriage is officially over – permanent like. Douglas strangled Candice to death before taking his own life. What’s worse, the kids were home at the time.

The couple’s 8-year-old daughter made the call to 911 from her parents bedroom. “Hello, my dad’s choking my mom,” the child said. The dispatcher asked the child where her mommy and daddy were. “They’re in the kitchen and daddy’s choking my mom.” She tells the dispatcher that if her daddy knew she had called the police, he would throw away the phone. The girl pointed out that “it’s been a long time since my dad choked my mom.” She could hear her mother screaming – over and over. The girl explained that she and her twin sister were alone in the house with their parents -  their 10-year-old brother had gone to stay the night at a friends. Later in the call, the girl tells the dispatcher that she can’t hear her mommy screaming anymore. Shortly after that, a man could be heard crying in the background. “Did you call the police?” he asked. The little girl screamed and the connection was broken. The dispatcher called back. Douglas answered the phone. He told the dispatcher, “My kids are playing games upstairs. I told them to leave the phone alone.” The dispatcher replied, “I don’t think they’re playing games, but we’re going to have someone out there shortly.” “Okay, good,” said Douglas. The dispatcher asked, “What’s going on there? Can you tell me what’s going on?” Once again, the connection was broken.

When police arrived at the home, they found Candice’s body in the kitchen – she had been strangled. The discovery led to an hour long manhunt that ended when Douglas’ body was found – hanging in the barn. All three children were unharmed (physically anyway) and have been placed with relatives.

Portland, OR - Break-ups, most of the time, suck ass. Though sometimes a break-up could be considered cause for celebration, there is usually one ‘injured’ party in the situation -  the ass who is the most ass hurt in the whole thing. The ass in this story is Cory Vaughn. Wednesday evening, Cory allegedly got a little rough with his girlfriend’s puppy. When his girlfriend stepped up to protect her critter, Cory turned his anger on her. The girlfriend told authorities that Cory slapped her, pushed her down, and tried to choke her. Cory eventually fled the apartment, and the girlfriend, knowing that Cory had a key to her home and may return to finish the job, left to spend the night with a friend. A short time later, a neighbor called to inform her that her apartment was on fire. Right before she called 911, she scrolled through her text messages and soon discovered who the culprit was and the lengths he would go to to hurt her.

“He he he fire” said one text. “Smoky in here. … Damn, I’m destructive. … Really shouldn’t leave someone who hates YOU alone with stuff. … Don’t worry it’s just stuff. … It’s wet, burned and ripped, but it’s just stuff. … Yeah, fire trucks and police.” Hehhh…talk about incriminating yourself. After she read those messages, she called Cory. He continued his butt hurty rant over the phone. “Hope nothing important is in your bag ’cause your table is on fire. It’s pretty,” he allegedly told her. “The Bible you’ve been using? It’s a little singed.” When fire crews showed up to put out the flames, they found three separate piles of the woman’s belongings that had been torched – one pile on the coffee table, one pile on the kitchen table, and a pile in the bedroom. Luckily, the fire didn’t spread throughout the entire apartment or to her neighbor’s apartments.

Cory, the little genius, was arrested when he was seen driving past the complex – to survey the damage, no doubt. At first, he denied even having a girlfriend – under questioning, he admitted to being in the apartment, but said the fire was already burning when he got there. Good thing the retard is a texting freak with the inability to keep his pie hole closed. Cory Vaughn, 35, is being held on two counts of first-degree arson, second-degree criminal mischief, strangulation and harassment. Bail has been set at $512,500. Dumbass.

Oxford, FL–You will have to bear with my as I shudder and twitch my way through this story. You see, I have a terrible fear of snakes. The little-bitty garden variety can send chills up and down my spine, so I can’t imagine ever coming up against a “real” snake, of the 12-ft. and longer variety. Shaunia Hare, 2, was sleeping Wednesday morning when the family pet found it’s way out of a glass aquarium, slithered to the child’s crib, wrapped itself around her body and bit her little head. Charles Darnell, owner of the snake and boyfriend of Shaunia’s mother, awoke to find the snake missing. I can’t imagine his terror at what he found next. He entered the child’s room in search of the snake, and discovered the 12-foot-long Burmese python in the crib, on top of Shaunia. Charles got hold of a knife and repeatedly stabbed the snake until it relinquished it’s hold on the child.

The anguish in his voice is evident in the 911 call: “The baby’s dead!” he screamed. “Our stupid snake got out in the middle of the night and strangled the baby. She got out of the cage last night and got into the baby’s crib and strangled her to death.” Charles told authorities that he had placed the larger snake in a bag and placed the bag in the aquarium the evening before. Whether or not that aquarium was actually secured is unclear. The snake was later found underneath some furniture and was removed from the home, alive. Authorities also removed another snake, a 6-footer.

Though Charles did not have a permit for the snake, which is a second-degree misdemeanor, it is unclear as to whether or not charges will be filed. Investigators are still looking into whether there was any child neglect involved. The snakes have been placed with someone who has a permit, pending the investigation into Shaunia’s death.

Update: 8/25/09 – Charles Darnell, 32, and Jaren Hare, 19, have both been charged with manslaughter, third degree murder and child abuse in the death of Shaianna Hare. According to authorities, Jaren delivered a baby girl a couple of weeks ago – that child has been placed in the custody of relatives.

Chesapeake, Virginia–Carly Sawyer was a beautiful little 5-year-old girl trapped in the middle of a bitter custody dispute. For 2 1/2 years, two families fought over the child…but, in the end, her father, 24-year-old Joshua Sawyer, was granted custody. Wednesday evening, paramedics were called to the Sawyer home on a report of an unresponsive child. There was little that could be done for her…Carly died on Thursday. Now Joshua and his second wife, 21-year-old Brandy Sawyer, are facing murder charges in the death of the little girl with the precious smile.

The M.E. determined the cause of death was blunt-force trauma…with contributing factors that included starvation, ligature restraint and medical neglect. Joshua was charged with second-degree murder and felony child neglect. Brandy was charged with first-degree murder and felony child neglect. There were two other children living in the home…it has not been determined if either of them have been abused or neglected.

There is a weird little twist to this tale–Brandy’s sister, Dana Browning, 19, was arrested in November on charges of concealing the birth of a child, failure to report a death and obstruction of justice. Dana is accused of putting her dead newborn girl in a plastic bag, and tossing it in the trash.
