WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA — A man burned to death at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval after his costume caught fire.
At around 10:25 p.m. Thursday, 51-year-old Gilbert Estrada was attending the party with his girlfriend and his brother as he does every year. Estrada was dressed as a military sniper and for reasons still unclear, his costume catches on fire.
As he runs around in circles trying not be on fire, other party-goers danced and cheered, not realizing the seriousness of the situation.
“So many people were drunk and partying,” said a witness. “People were chanting, clapping, filming and taking pictures like it was some kind of cool, funny thing and not realizing it was a guy who was suffering in a really bad condition.”
You can watch the 1-minute, 41-second video below, and while it doesn’t show how the fire started, it does show Estrada running around trying to extinguish the flames while a bunch of morons dance around and cheer, or remark how they got that shit on video.…Continue Reading
San Francisco, CA - A woman who went missing from her hospital room was found dead 17 days later in one of the hospital’s stairwells.
On September 19th, 57-year-old Lynne Spaulding was admitted to San Francisco General Hospital, apparently for complications from a bladder infection. Her family says she was frail and thin when admitted, and were worried about her condition. Hospital staff were supposedly checking on Spaulding every 15 minutes due to her “frail condition and confused mental state,” which sounds a bit more serious than a simple bladder infection. Although, some sources are saying the medication the hospital had her on was making her disoriented.
The hospital said they last saw Spaulding in her fifth floor room at 10:15 am on September 21st, and that her condition had improved. A nurse checked on her fifteen minutes later and she was gone. When her boyfriend and two friends came to visit Spaulding shortly after, they were told she’d gone missing. Her family filed a missing persons report after the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department and hospital staff conducted, what they believed to be, a thorough search of the hospital.…Continue Reading
Adelaide, Australia - On December 1, 1948, the body of a middle-aged white man was discovered lying beneath a lamppost on Somerton Beach by several pedestrians taking an early morning stroll along the shore.
That’s it. You now know nearly as much about him as police have figured out in nearly 65 years of investigation.
Theories abound as to the identity of the man. Due to the beginning of the Cold War and heightened tensions, some believe him to have been a spy, although no government has ever claimed him and there is no real evidence to support the espionage theory.
The undisputed facts of the case are these:
- An autopsy was unable to determine any cause of death. The medical examiner at the time strongly suspected poisoning, due to an enlarged spleen and minor damage to the liver and kidneys, but no foreign substance was detected in the body. As retired Adelaide Police Detective Gerald Feltus put it, the man “died of a sudden, acute onset of damned if I know!” In 1994, Victoria Chief Justice John Harber Phillips declares that “there can be little doubt that” the Somerton Man’s death was caused by digitalis, although the autopsy records had been lost for years and Phillips himself is not a physician.
BETHLEHEM, PA - Days after a dead baby was found inside a trash can in a Kohl’s restroom, an employee at a popular sports bar made a horrifying discovery after lifting the tank lid from a troublesome toilet and found a fetus.
David Rank, the owner of Starters Pub, said that employees were cleaning the bathroom at around 10 a.m. Monday morning when they made the gruesome discovery. Rank said that the employee was very shaken after finding the floating fetus and got choked up himself while talking about the incident with reporters.
“My biggest concern are for my employees, the mother, the baby — I just want everybody to say prayers for those people,” said Rank.
Rank said that the night before, the diners and sports fans were patronizing the bar while watching preseason football. He has turned over surveillance footage to police to see if they can identify who upper-decked the toilet.
So far there has been no word on official cause of death or the estimated age of the fetus, but I am going to assume that it was not full-term.…Continue Reading
PAYSON, UT – Police have few clues regarding the death of Nathan Tyler Haun, the 17-year-old found dead in the middle of the road after a fight at a party.
Haun’s body was found by a motorist around 5:30 a.m. Saturday, lying in the middle of Arrowhead Trail between Salem and Payson. An autopsy would later reveal Haun died as a result of being hit by a car.
“There was a significant amount of trauma that was very extensive from head to toe,” Sgt. Spencer Cannon with the Utah County Sheriff’s Department said. “There was no chance of survival.”
Haun was last seen at a house party Friday night, but the group of teens are keeping their mouths shut and their parents have already hired attorneys. Investigators believe these teens know what lead to Hauns death, but are trying to stay out of trouble, possibly because of underage drinking.
“They’re not only not cooperating with us, they’re being very uncooperative, so what we’re really not getting the detail we need from the people we think know what happened,” said Cannon.…Continue Reading
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A 9-year-old boy was found hanging from a clothesline behind an abandoned home last Thursday. Minneapolis police are now calling the boy’s death suspicious and think the kids he was playing with that afternoon may know what happened.
Neighbors found the boy with a rope around his neck and hanging from a clothesline in the backyard of an abandoned home. His feet were dragging the ground, but he was already limp and unresponsive by time they were able to get him down and remove the clothesline that had been wrapped around his neck. Police and paramedics arrived on the scene within minutes, but the boy never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead Monday night.
Then next day, community activists were in the neighborhood talking to the kids. Police also interviewed people in the area, including other children they feel know what happened to the boy, who was visiting from Georgia with his family.
“It is my understanding is that he was playing with a group of kids that were 7 and 8 years old, possible some older kids.…Continue Reading
Saginaw, TX – On Monday night, some teens found the body of a young girl underneath a tarp in the middle of a neighborhood street. She was wearing only purple underwear, her feet and legs were bound and she had a plastic grocery bag over her head.
The neighborhood kids discovered the tarp in the middle of the street near Roundrock Drive and Cindy Lane. They found the girl’s body, believed to be around 4 or 5 years old, when they lifted the tarp.
“At first, I just thought it was some rubber stuff at first, and then I got a closer look and all I saw was a bag and I saw some hair sticking out and so, I was like, ‘Oh my God! It’s a girl!’ And that’s when I dropped to my knees and just started crying,” said 18-year-old John Smith.
Saginaw police have requested help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and an FBI Evidence Response Team was collecting evidence and taking photographs of the crime scene early Tuesday morning.…Continue Reading
RIVERTON, UT – The two men arrested in connection to the murder of 15-year-old Anne Kasprzak have been set free, and the hunt for her killer(s) continues.
It’s been almost a year since Anne’s body was found in the Jordan river. She had been beaten so badly that she had to be identified by her scars, clothing and cosmetic dentistry. A search warranted described defensive wounds on Anne’s hands, and a pushed back fingernail.
She was last seen by her family the night before, after going into her bedroom to listen to music. At some point she sneaked out of the house and reported her as a runaway when her parents found she was not in her room and would not answer their calls or reply to text messages.
Before Anne left her home, she spent 30 minutes talking on her cellphone to people with unavailable phone numbers. Her family tracked the location of the Anne’s cellphone, noticing that it seemed to be moving slowly before quickening, as if she were in a moving vehicle.…Continue Reading
DEERFIELD BEACH, FL – Shortly after Edward Archbold won a cockroach eating contest at Ben Siegel Reptile Store, he collapsed in front of the store and died.
The 32-year-old had been participating the store’s second annual Midnight Madness sale that included a cockroach eating contest. The winner of the contest would be the proud owner of an $850 Ivory ball python which, if he won it, Archbold had planned on selling to the friend who brought him there.
Around 30 people were compteting for the python, but Archbold was victorious after downing dozens of cockroaches and worms. His victory was short lived, however, as after the contest was over Archbold became ill and started throwing up. I have seen some horrific vomit in my life, some of it my own, but just thinking of what came back out of Archbold’s mouth almost trips my gag reflex.
Paramedics ended up being called to the scene after Archbold collapsed in front of the store. He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. …Continue Reading
SAN DIEGO – At a bit after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, a woman walking down an alley near the Park View Apartments complex probably had the contents of her nightmares altered forever: she spotted something odd on the ground, and when she moved closer, she realized it was an infant.
It appeared that the little boy had fallen from one of the complex’s windows. She immediately called authorities, who discovered, upon arriving, that the child was severely injured. (Odd how falls from a significant height seem to affect infants that way.) Medics performed CPR and transported the boy to the hospital, but the little guy didn’t make it to 6:00 p.m.
Currently, there are more questions than answers on this case, but let me share what we do seem to know: (1) The infant’s injuries were caused by a fall from a 3rd-story window. (2) The police initially detained the boy’s 33-year-old mother for questioning but have since arrested her and are now investigating the death as a homicide; they indicate she will be charged with first-degree murder. …Continue Reading
Anchorage, Alaska – Police are pretty positive the body recovered from an Alaska lake yesterday belongs to 18-year-old Samantha Koenig, who went missing in February, and they have a suspect in custody.
Koenig disappeared while working as a barista at a coffee stand in Anchorage. When her boyfriend arrived to pick her up, she was not there and the Common Grounds stand had been locked up. A co-worker arrived the next morning to find the security alarm had not been set, money was missing and some of Koenig’s belongings were still in the stand.
A check of surveillance video would solve part of the mystery, as a man wearing a dark-colored hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap can be seen forcing Koenig to accompany him. Based on Koenig’s demeanor and the man’s actions, detectives stated there was no doubt she had been abducted.
After months of few leads or information being released to the press, police in Texas arrested 34-year-old Israel “Izzy” Keyes in connection to Koenig’s disappearance. Keyes is a self-employed contractor whose website states he moved to Alaska in 2007 to start his own business.…Continue Reading
Big Spring, TX - Hailey Dunn, the missing thirteen-year-old from Colorado City, Texas, may have been found. Fifteen months after her December 2010 disappearance, a body was located on Tuesday afternoon near an air park in Big Spring. UPDATE 12:07 PM 3/23/12 – Apparently not. The body, on autopsy, appears male and is not Hailey Dunn. So that’s that – and Hailey is still missing. (imp)
Hailey’s case captured the nation’s attention at the time of her disappearance because Nancy Freakin’ Grace put up Hailey’s eighth grade cheerleader picture and called her “Missing Texas Cheerleader” in one of the more egregious cases of Missing White Girl Syndrome we’ve ever seen.
Within weeks, though, even the ol’ NG was off the case when it became clear that Hailey’s family life was more jacked up than a vintage Chevy in a redneck’s front yard.
From early on, it was clear to many of Hailey’s supporters that the bright, funny teenager was probably dead. Both her mother, Billie Dunn, and her mother’s boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, reportedly failed polygraphs regarding the circumstances of Hailey’s disappearance.…Continue Reading
SACRAMENTO, CA - I wasn’t going to post about the murder of 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam, especially since Nancy Grace and a couple of silly “psychics” are on the case and will have this solved in no time, but when I saw Google considers an opinionated Gather article a news source, I died a little inside and figured I would put up my own article.
I know a lot of you have already heard about the murder of 13-year-old Jessica Funk-Haslam, but for those of you who haven’t, her body was found in a dugout of a baseball field last Tuesday morning. She had been strangled, stabbed and beaten.
The last person known to have seen her alive was her mother, Tara Funk-Haslam, who says her daughter ran out of the house to meet someone after an argument. She says she chased after her but was unable to catch her.
Armchair detectives are already fingering her as the prime suspect, speculating as to why her mother waited until the next morning to call police, or why she didn’t try to contact her friends or her father, Allen Porter.…Continue Reading
RIVERTON, UT – Police and family members of 15-year-old Anne Kasprzak are asking for the public’s help in finding her killer. The teen’s body was found floating in a Utah river Sunday afternoon.
The teen was last seen alive leaving her mother’s house about 7:45 p.m. Saturday. Her family thought she just went out for a walk, but when she failed to answer her phone or respond to their text messages, they began to worry. She was reported as a runaway at 8:43 p.m. that same night.
Family members used GPS to track the location of the Kasprzak’s cellphone, noting that Anne first seemed to be moving slowly before her movement quickened, as if she were in a moving vehicle. When they were no longer able to track her, they assumed her cell phone battery had died and continued looking for her until the early morning hours..
The next morning, police would would find a bloody sneaker on a pedestrian bridge in the same area her family had been searching. Later that afternoon, Kasprzak’s body would be found floating in the Jordan River.…Continue Reading
HONOLULU, HI – If you know of a child missing some fingers recently, police in Hawaii would really like to talk to you after a child’s fingers were found in a dumpster behind a low-income housing complex.
A woman was looking for bottles and cans in a dumpster behind the Kukui Gardens Housing Complex when she found a ziploc bag containing what she thought was ginger root.
“I saw a plastic ziploc bag, which I thought were ginger root starting to dry out. I’m a gardener, and I recycle, and I thought I’d be able restore them. So I threw them in my purse,” said Gina Rose Vendegna.
She later realized what she had found was not ginger root when she noticed the fingernails. She showed the fingers to some other people who weren’t convinced they were actually fingers, or if they were, once belonged to a monkey.
“I thought just by chance I’m going to call the Police Department, turn ‘em in and let them decide,” Vendegna said.
Tests determined the fingers, two complete and four partial, belonged to a female child between two-and-a-half and four years old.…Continue Reading
Los Angeles, CA – If you left a man’s severed head underneath the Hollywood sign, the Los Angeles police would like to have a word with you.
On Tuesday, two female hikers were walking nine dogs in Bronson Canyon Park when they noticed two of the dogs playing with an object in a bag. The object was a man’s severed head.
“One of the dogs ran into the brush and came out carrying a plastic grocery bag,” police Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. ”As the dogs shook the plastic grocery bag the severed human head fell out of the bag and onto the ground.”
Initial reports were that the head belonged to an Armenian American in his 40s with salt and pepper hair. Investigators do not feel the head was there long as there were no signs that any animals had gotten to it before the two dogs did.
Police were back out there today with cadaver dogs and found two severed hands they feel belong to whoever is also missing a head.…Continue Reading
Milwaukee, WI – Milwaukee has joined Las Vegas as the only two U.S. cities who have a website featuring the real pictures of their unidentified dead.
They hope this will help them solve some of their cold cases instead of just relying on sketches and those creepy clay models that leave you standing in the furthest depths of uncanny valley.
If the site of dead adults, infants and fetuses in varying states of decay are your thing, then head on over to the Milwaukee medical examiner’s unidentified persons site and take a gander. For those of you with weak stomachs, let me warn you as these are the real deal and some of it is fascinasty™.
But no worries if you accidentally click the link, as your desktop won’t immediately be flooded with images of bloated corpses. Forensic investigator Michael Simley is aware of the sensitive nature of the photographs and places more than enough warnings on the site before you actually get to the meat.
Smiley is also aware of how desperate this seems, but says that in the 17 cases featured, they have simply run out of options.…Continue Reading
GILGO BEACH, NY — It’s been a year since we first reported on four bodies being found in the bushes along a quarter-mile strip of beachfront property in Long Island. Since then that number rose to a total of 10 bodies.
The first four bodies have been identified and all advertised prostitution services on Craigslist and police feel all of the deceased had some connections to the sex trade. Initially, police felt that the bodies were not the work of one person, but rather multiple people using the desolate stretch of beach as some kind of dumping ground. But now they say they’re dealing with one serial killer who has been littering the beach with dead women as far back as 1996.
“Looking at the common denominators involved with the dumping ground, the type of victims, the dismemberments, all on Long Island. Our theory is that it’s probably one serial killer,” Richard Dormer said. This contradicts his earlier statements of there being multiple killers derived from the fact that the person responsible took the Henry route and did not “necessarily do the same thing all the time.”
The hunt for a serial killer started after 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert went missing in May.…Continue Reading
LEWISTON, Maine - The whereabouts of a woman who went missing 28 years ago may have been discovered after a body was found in a freezer owned by a man who died recently.
Frank Julian was 52-years-old when his on-again-off-again girlfriend, 29-year-old Kitty Wardwell, went missing back in 1983. Julian was the last person to see her alive and told authorities that the last time he saw her was when he dropped her off at a motel after a fight.
Wardwell has never been seen or heard from since and police said she probably was the victim of foul play. Julian was interviewed by police on several occasions, but never got enough evidence to warrant searching his property. Now the mystery of what happened to Wardell may have been solved after Julian died unexpectedly on October 1.
Some of Julian’s family members were cleaning out a storage unit he rented when they found an unplugged freezer that contained a gruesome surprise; human body parts.
The freezer was removed with the remains inside to be taken to the chief medical examiner for an autopsy and DNA test. …Continue Reading
BETHANY, Oklahoma – Police confirmed on Monday that the body found stuffed inside a duffel bag last week was 19-year-old Carina Saunders, who was reported missing earlier this month.
According to police, an animal rescue group found Saunder’s body while searching for feral cats in a wooded area behind a Homeland and called 911. Yesterday Police Chief Phil Cole would reveal the body, which had been there for two to three days, belonged to Saunders after dental records were matched.
The medical examiner has not released an official cause of death, stating the autopsy has not been completed, but has ruled the teen’s death as a homicide.
According to her friends and family, Saunders was last seen on Sept 28 getting into a Chevy Blazer driven by a white man about 40 years-old, with gray hair. Cole said that there were reports of Saunders being spotted at an apartment complex on October 8 or 9, adding this wouldn’t be unusual as she had friends there and frequented the area.
The FBI are now involved and police said they have several leads but no motivation for the killing.…Continue Reading
