FLEMING ISLAND, Florida - When Dana Whitelaw, 47, got out of the shower Tuesday morning, she found her entire family dead. Her husband, Jerry Whitelaw, 49, had shot their two children — 16-year-old son, Kevin, and 11-year-old daughter, Katy — while they slept. He then turned the gun on himself. Court records show that Dana had filed for divorce in late August after 16 years of marriage, but continued to live together during the process. Police have no records of ever having to go to their residence in the past. Kevin was a junior at St. Johns Country Day in Orange Par, Katie attended Grace Episcopal. I think what makes this particular murder-suicide is the blatant purpose behind it. Jerry wanted Dana to live after this, knowing it was the best possible way to hurt her. Kill her kids, then let her live with that fact. Absolutely horrifying in its cold-blooded callousness. I can not possibly imagine anything my wife could do to me that could have me killing my own kids to get back at her. That is signs of one very, very selfish man – or one that is extremely mentally disturbed.

Lakeland, Florida A little after 3 pm on Monday, firefighters responded to a car fire on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Tampa, Florida. They had no way of knowing that they were about to drive up on an arson, a homicide, and a suicide. Court records show that Robert Laird and his wife, Sheryl, were divorced and she was granted an injunction keeping him from having contact with her. All who had contact with Sheryl describe her as being a positive woman despite the past marital problems and despite having to share her daughter with the man she feared. None of that matters now. Robert drove to the top of that bridge, doused the car with gasoline and turned it into a torch with his dead wife in the trunk, and lept from the bridge as the firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. And at 6 pm, their 7-year-old daughter was still sitting patiently waiting to be picked up from Happy Days School.

Being late to pick her daughter up was not a typical behavior of Sheryl, especially without a phone call. As the 7-year-old sat alone with one employee who stayed behind, it was assumed Sheryl got into an accident on her way home from her commute to Tampa. What wasn’t known – Sheryl didn’t make it to work that day and instead had an altercation with the man who was to stay away from her – the father of her child. And as emergency workers cleaned up the scene on top of that bridge, the little girl waited.

It is believed that Robert showed up at his ex-wife’s home and killed her during an argument. It’s also believed that he put her body in the trunk of the vehicle and made the journey to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Although Sheryl stated her ex had never struck her, his drinking, coupled with his temper and possessiveness, led to their divorce.

Despite what Sheryl stated prior to their divorce in 2005, Robert was arrested in 2006 for domestic violence and violating the injunction. It’s truly a shame this woman had to continue to live in fear as she strove to make a happier life for she and her daughter. It’s an absolute heart-wrenching caveat to this story that an innocent child of 7 sat waiting for the mother who would never be there to pick her up from school.

MOUNT AIRY, Maryland – A family of four were found dead in their home on Friday. Charles L. Dalton Sr., 38, killed himself, his family and the family dog. Dalton’s wife, Jennifer A. Dalton, 37, was found dead in her bed. Their son, Charles L. Dalton Jr., 14, and their daughter, Emmaline E. Dalton, 7 were also found dead in their beds. The family pet, a beagle named Max, was found dead in an animal crate. All had been shot to death with the same shotgun Charles Dalton used to kill himself with. They were described as nice and religious, Dalton a self-employed carpenter and maintenance worker for Montgomery County schools. Financial difficulties seem to be part of the reason behind Charles’s actions – it’s being reported that the family was having problems selling their house.

State police have closed the investigation while friends and neighbors are in shock. The bodies were discovered after co-workers failed to reach Jennifer when she did not show up for work at her part-time job at a veterinary hospital. A friend went to the house to check on the family on Friday and saw a body through a window.

Las Vegas, Nevada Sin City. The land of quick marriages made in heaven or at least a simulated rendition of heaven featuring Pastor Elvis himself. For many couples, the draw of getting hitched in Glitter Gulch is everything dreams are made of…where you can say your “I Do”’s, gorge yourself at a smorgasbord, catch a show, and gamble your life’s savings away while retiring up to your room where the bed rotates and is decked out with red velvet coverings. Not quite my style but it is for many. I wonder – do the permanent residents of Vegas go all out like the tourists? Are their ceremonies any less spectacular? Do they possess some magic recipe for a lasting marriage? Do they seriously mutter “Til Death Do Us Part”? And when the reality of a failed marriage sinks in, does the groom reflect upon their memories together as he opens the freezer and gazes upon the top tier of their wedding cake that’s nestled next to his frozen wife?

It must have been quite a scene for police as they responded to the residence of Mark Helwig. The local PD had received a letter from Mr. Helwig stating he had harmed his wife and he planned on doing a little fancy work on himself as well. So when the locksmith popped open the door, police took a little look around and found Mark in the master bedroom. Well, more like dead in the closet…with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. At least he kept the mess confined.

While searching the adjoining bedroom, they discovered the motif was a little bizarre. I’m not sure if there was another bed but there was a freezer and in the freezer was the wife that Mark said he harmed. Frozen stiff as a board. And had been for quite some time…authorities are speculating at least 18 months to 2 years. That’s a long visitation if you ask me. In the letter he allegedly states he couldn’t stand to move his wife’s body from the house. Fuck. That. Noise. I’d be getting that bitch OUT. I lived in a funeral home. 2 nights of sleeping with a dead body in the same vicinity was long enough.

Neighbors don’t recall much about this elderly couple as they claim Mark traveled a lot out of country and they really hadn’t seen anything from them in a couple of years. Well hell, they hadn’t seen her maybe. His wife was from Vietnam and likely had no relatives anywhere around.

It’s gonna take some time to thaw Mrs. Helwig out enough to perform an autopsy on her. It didn’t say if she was cut up or anything, so I’m assuming he folded her nicely and tucked her in there, so she will take some time to melt out. And I guess they’re not likely to put her in a full bathtub to speed up the process due to forensics and shit. That’s where I’d suck. I’m impatient. I’d be trying all kinds of stuff to speed up the process. That’s why they’re not having me help and I am left to write about it.

Cheyenne, WY – Southeast Wyoming is hell. It’s a gray, desolate, nightmarish wasteland full of howling wind and the ugliest, most desperate shrubbery in the world. When the wind isn’t sucking all rational thought from your skull like a passenger jet with the windows blown out, I’m almost certain that it actually rains road kill. It’s the least populous state in the nation, which means most people have chosen slightly lesser hells like Bakersfield, CA, or even Delaware. Stop and ask a local why the fuck you just saw a sign with a picture of a rabbit with antlers growing out of it’s head. They jokingly call this taxidermy-for-tourism‘s-sake a “jackalope”, but I call it mutilating at least two corpses. It is a place that warps the mind, sickens the soul and ruthlessly chaps the lips of any who dare enter it. That’s why whenever some horrible, bloody tale makes it’s way from those barren hills and into the news, I can’t say I’m all that surprised. Even when Joy Hofer shot her husband, strangled their son and killed herself. Did I mention all the road kill?

The Hofers lived in the city of Cheyenne, known as “the Magic City of the Plains”. The town was really just a few square miles of filthy shanties, whorehouses and rodeo halls until the U.S. Air Force purchased the land from the dinosaurs in 1865 – but what is this, City Confidential? Like I said, the ironically named Joy Hofer evidently shot her husband Kelly Hofer before strangling their two year old son, Gunnar. According to autopsy results, the little boy had lidocaine on his face and in his bloodstream, as if the mother had somehow attempted to numb or anesthetize him prior to strangulation. Joy then killed herself, in a manner yet to be revealed. The bodies were found on July 25. No motive, no note, nothing. Laramie County Coroner Marty Luna was likewise baffled when he told the press “And that’s part of what I’m continuing in my investigation: that there has to be some other aspect as to why this occurred,”. Some other aspect. A secret love affair? A pending divorce? Spousal abuse? Or was it simply residence in the twenty two square mile Amityville Horror that is Cheyenne, WY? We did touch on the heaps and heaps of road kill, right?

The sad truth of the matter is that shit like this seems to happen every day in communities all over America, in both rural and urban areas. Places without high winds or “jackalopes”. I’m just poking back at Wyoming for all those long drives through the state up to Montana. I guess it’s not that bad, certainly not bad enough to make someone commit murder. It’s not only an ignorant, silly notion, but it shifts blame away from the actual killer; in this case, Joy Hofer. Southeast Wyoming isn’t some black nexus of harsh realities, road kill and bad taxidermy – it’s just a place like any other. These tragedies are usually born of the soul, not the soil. Frank Readick, voice of the Shadow in the old days of radio drama used to ask: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows…”. Of course he did. Frank was from Philadelphia – don’t get me started on that horrible little shit-hole…

Chisago County, MN – It’s not clear when Douglas and Candice Ouellette’s marriage started to fall apart, but by June, Candice had obviously had enough, and filed for a protection order against her husband. On the application, she stated that Douglas had been suffering from depression and suicidal tendencies for quite some time. She wrote that on June 17, he held a gun to his head and told her, “I want you to see this so you remember for the rest of your life.” Candice took the gun from his hand – he whipped out a second one and held it to his head. She called 911 and Douglas was taken to a hospital. She decided to file for the restraining order when she discovered his normally empty guns were loaded – each one with five bullets. The number of bullets equaled the number of members in their little family. Candice filed for divorce on June 29 – Douglas was granted visitation with his children, and access to his shop and outbuildings on the property during the day, but was ordered not to enter the house. He was allowed to call or e-mail his wife once a day. He couldn’t have his guns back until he underwent a psychological evaluation. As of Wednesday night, the marriage is officially over – permanent like. Douglas strangled Candice to death before taking his own life. What’s worse, the kids were home at the time.

The couple’s 8-year-old daughter made the call to 911 from her parents bedroom. “Hello, my dad’s choking my mom,” the child said. The dispatcher asked the child where her mommy and daddy were. “They’re in the kitchen and daddy’s choking my mom.” She tells the dispatcher that if her daddy knew she had called the police, he would throw away the phone. The girl pointed out that “it’s been a long time since my dad choked my mom.” She could hear her mother screaming – over and over. The girl explained that she and her twin sister were alone in the house with their parents -  their 10-year-old brother had gone to stay the night at a friends. Later in the call, the girl tells the dispatcher that she can’t hear her mommy screaming anymore. Shortly after that, a man could be heard crying in the background. “Did you call the police?” he asked. The little girl screamed and the connection was broken. The dispatcher called back. Douglas answered the phone. He told the dispatcher, “My kids are playing games upstairs. I told them to leave the phone alone.” The dispatcher replied, “I don’t think they’re playing games, but we’re going to have someone out there shortly.” “Okay, good,” said Douglas. The dispatcher asked, “What’s going on there? Can you tell me what’s going on?” Once again, the connection was broken.

When police arrived at the home, they found Candice’s body in the kitchen – she had been strangled. The discovery led to an hour long manhunt that ended when Douglas’ body was found – hanging in the barn. All three children were unharmed (physically anyway) and have been placed with relatives.

Kingman, AZ- The details in this story are few, but the heroism of a 20-month old baby girl’s mother I wanted to share with you. Brad Anderson, 28, and his wife Holly, 26, had been separated after an extensive history of domestic violence. Holly took the couple’s baby girl, Bailey, left their home and moved in with a friend. It was at this friend’s residence that police responded to a domestic disturbance call around 5:40 p.m. this last Sunday. Holly Anderson was only able to speak to the officers through a small crack in the door and she began making eye movements while talking that suggested she was not alone.

When an officer silently mouthed the words, “Does he have a gun?”, Holly replied, “Yes, I will bring the baby out.” As soon as Holly handed the baby to the officer…BAM! Holly was shot in the head. The bullet that killed Holly passed through her and also struck one of the officers in his left arm. The police made their way into the home and found Brad Anderson dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Enjoy Hell, you fucking scumbag!

Axton, Virginia It’s after midnight on a Saturday, a time for all good college kids to be hitting their drinking prime or making their way back to their dorm room looking for the perfect opportunity to sneak their love for the evening into the comfort of their room. But for Timothy Carter, activities after midnight on Saturday were a bit more adventurous. Guided by the loving hand of his father, Timothy was lured home only to find daddy had flipped and that his basic survival instincts would be put to the test after his father turned the gun on him. 

Saturday evening Timothy Carter received a phone call from his father asking him to drive the 90 miles home from Radford University, simply stating his mother really needed to speak with him. Upon arriving at his parent’s house, William Carter lured his son into the basement of their ranch-style home where his mother, Bonnie (56), and his brother William Carter Jr. (28), lay dead on the floor. Seems like dad wasn’t so good at keeping his secret for his plans for Timothy as he quickly opened fire on him as well, shooting him in the back. Of course, the natural reaction would be an attempt to flee from the insanity, which he tried but his father was insistent he stay and shot him a second time. I can’t even begin to imagine the thoughts running through one’s mind in this situation and I’m sure Timothy had plenty, the best one being to play dead…which he did.

When William retreated away from the basement and into another portion of the house, Timothy was able to escape to safety at a neighbors where a call was placed to 911. The surviving son explained how his father had used trickery to lure him into the horrifying scene. As authorities arrived, the house was ablaze. The bodies of Bonnie and William Jr. were recovered, as well as William Sr. who had shot himself after attempting to create the family funeral pyre. The firearms were also recovered from the crime scene along with evidence of the premeditated murder-suicide in the form of a “putting final affairs in order” letter. Timothy is still hospitalized and listed in fair condition.

Corona, CA – Once again, we have a story of a selfish asshole who wanted to off himself and take his family with him.  And of course, once again he succeeds at murdering his babies and only injuring himself.  They have no motive at this time, but it is said that Amado Esqueda and his wife had separated shortly before he completely lost his shit and went on a stabbing rampage killing his two young daughters, seriously injuring his wife and injuring himself.

Around 6:30 AM on Saturday morning, Irene Gonzales called 911 to report that her husband was stabbing her and her children.  6 year old Cassandra and 2 month old Natalie both died of multiple stab wounds at the hospital.  Gonzales remains in serious condition, and Esqueda is in the hospital ward at the jail with stab wounds.  Esqueda also had 2 teenage children who were not home at the time.

Neighbors say this was a nice normal family that set off no red flags.  They never heard any arguments or witnessed any conflict.  Esqueda had no prior arrests, and court records only show a one traffic ticket  in 2007.  So what made this man snap?  I don’t know, but someone who could stab his own 2 month old and kindergartner to death over some marital problems doesn’t deserve to be breathing the same air as the rest of us.  He now faces the death penalty, but with the way the economy is, I’m thinking it wouldn’t be so bad if suicide watch was a little lax and the supply of strong bedsheets were abundant.  The taxpayers could use a break.

ATHENS, Georgia – He was also a Georgia professor who was pretty miffed at his wife. On April 25th, he left his kids in the car and shot her -along with two of her friends- to death outside of a community theater. He then dropped the kids off at a neighbor’s house claiming there had been an emergency, and disappeared. Until yesterday. His body was found in a grave he dug himself, crawled into and then blew his brains out.

It is being reported that Bruce wanted a divorce, but Zinkhan left no note so there are still some questions as to why he killed the three people before himself. But the fact that he first targeted a male friend his wife was with speaks volumes, don’t ya’ think? George and his wife argued briefly in front of the theater, when Zinkahn used two handguns to first shoot Clemson University economist and actor Tom Tanner, 40, then his wife Marie Bruce, 47 and then Ben Teague, 63.

There had been a manhunt for him ever since the shootings, until his body was found hidden in some woods near where he lived. He had dug a grave, pulled brush and debris on top of himself and then scrambled his brains. “A person who is not accustomed to the woods would never have found the body,” said Athens-Clarke County Police Chief Joseph Lumpkin. What a dick. Not only did he murder three people, for whatever reason, he tried to hide his body for what? To make people think he was still alive? To torture his children further? Good grief and good riddance.

Lakeland, Florida–Nathan Bellar, 13, is lucky to be alive today…the rest of his family isn’t. After an argument with his wife, Troy Bellar, 34, opened fire on his family with a 7.62 mm rifle, killing his wife and two of his children, before turning the gun on himself.

While the motive behind the killings is unclear, authorities believe Troy’s wife, Wendy, may have been attempting to leave the home with two of the couple’s children, when he went ballistic. He shot and killed his wife and two of their children…5-month-old Zack James Bellar, and 7-year-old Ryan Patrick Bellar. He pursued his older son, Nathan, through the garage, firing several rounds at the child. Nathan was lucky enough to escape his wigged out dad and make it safely to a neighbor’s home. He has been placed with family members.

‘This is one of the most tragic, senseless and horrific crimes we have investigated,’ Sheriff Grady Judd said. Couldn’t agree more, Sheriff. Records show Troy Bellar was arrested in ‘94 on suspicion of aggravated assault and again in ‘99 for DUI. Wendy Bellar, 31, was arrested in March of this year on suspicion of domestic battery.

Elkton, Maryland–Viktoria Albright, 34, and Michael Schary, 45, tied the knot less than three weeks ago…April 3, to be exact. I’m guessing marital bliss was not in the cards for this couple–Viktoria is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and Michael is in critical condition with a bullet wound to the back of his head.

The newlyweds had been enjoying each other’s company, engaging in casual conversation, when Viktoria left the room. Moments later, Michael felt pain in the back of his head…he thought Viktoria had hit him with something. She did hit him…with a bullet. He staggered out the front door and collapsed. Seconds later, he heard a gunshot. Investigators later found a .38-caliber handgun next to Viktoria’s body, along with two spent shells.

Though investigators say they haven’t heard any accounts of noticeable friction between Michael and Viktoria, they did report that Viktoria had stolen the handgun from a relative’s home earlier that same afternoon. Curious. Personally, I’d take a bullet to the back of the head over wedding vows any day.

Samantha, Jayme, James, Heather, and Maxine Harrison

Graham, Washington–Maxine, 16, was just learning to drive and hoped to someday become a cosmetologist. Jayme, 14, was a shy and quiet girl who loved video games. Samantha, 12, wanted to be a veterinarian. Heather, 8, loved being outside. James Jr., 7, was an energetic child with dreams of joining the Navy when he grew up. Those hopes and dreams will never be realized. Enraged over his wife’s supposed infidelities, their father, James Harrison, killed each and every one of them.

Relatives portray James Harrison as a strict parent and a jealous, controlling husband. In 2007, James was accused of abusing one of the children and DHS got involved. The complaint was checked out, James was put on a parenting plan, and the case was closed. The child in question remained in the home because the abuse ‘apparently was not considered serious enough at the time.’ They couldn’t possibly have known what the future held for the Harrison children.

James thought his wife was having an affair. And Friday evening, he and Maxine went in search of his wife, Angela. Maxine was able to track Angela through a GPS feature in her mother’s cell phone. They found Angela at a convenience store…with another man. Both father and daughter left the store distraught after Angela told them she wasn’t coming home; she was leaving him for the man she was with at the store. After returning home, Maxine sent a text to a friend, telling him that her parents got in a fight and her mother was leaving. The last text she sent said, ‘I’m tired of crying. I’m going to bed.’

At some point that evening, after the children were asleep, James shot each of them, in the head, multiple times at close-range. All of the children, save one, died in their beds. One child was found in the bathroom, amid obvious signs of a struggle. He then left the home in search of his wife.

On Saturday afternoon, a relative came by the Harrison’s mobile home to check on the family. No one answered the door. The relative noticed one of the children lying motionless on a bed.

Investigators believe James returned to the area near the convenience store, looking for his wife. James’ idling car was found not far from the store. He was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. There was no note.

Angela Harrison denies having an affair. She said ’she had a friend who showed her that she was not being treated properly.’ She told interviewers she finally got the courage to leave James on Friday morning and was going to come back for her kids so that they could all live together. She believes James killed the children to punish her. ‘Never in my wildest dreams did I think he would hurt my children. I did think he would hurt me. I know he would have hurt me, but not my children,’ said Angela. ‘They were my life and they were taken from me. He was real selfish, what he did.’

I think Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor said it best: ‘This was not a tragedy. It was a rotten murder. This appears to be the terrible work of the biological father. If that doesn’t break your heart, I don’t know what does.’

Casselberry, Florida–The picture you see above is a screenshot from surveillance video taken at the Shoot Straight Gun Range Sunday afternoon. The woman pointing the gun is 44-year-old Marie Moore. The target is her own son, 20-year-old Mitchel Moore. After blowing a hole in the back of Mitchel’s head, Marie placed the gun in her own mouth and swallowed a bullet. Mitchel died at the scene…Marie died a shortly after at Florida Hospital Altamonte.

For fucksake, why? There’s no suicide note, there’s no indication she had spoken of her plan to anyone else, there is no indication of a plan at all. They weren’t arguing at the time; witnesses say the pair seemed to be getting along just fine. The two were taking turns shooting targets and chatting with other shooters. What made this woman murder her son in such a chilling and cold-blooded manner?

Jim Copertino was target shooting in the lane next to Marie and Mitchel. He said it appeared the two were on drugs. ‘They were both very hyper and nervous. I was keeping an eye on them, actually, because it’s a very small location in there. I noticed both of them were very anxious with each other. She kept getting very close to him when he was firing.’ He also stated that Marie, ‘ran out just prior to that grabbed more ammunition and I watched her do that. The shooting happened right after that.’

Another eyewitness, Bobby Davidowitz had this to say: ‘When I heard a gunshot I look and I see this kid collapsing spitting up blood it took me a second to register.’ Bobby and his friends noticed something wasn’t quite right before it happened, ‘These people are too hyper to be at the gun range she was walking back and forth.’

According to a police report, Mitchel’s father, Charles Moore, told police it was his understanding that Marie was barred from that particular gun range due to a suicide attempt at the location several years ago. But police say they have no record of an incident involving Marie. They did state that Marie was once admitted to a hospital for observation under the state’s Baker Act in 2002, but due to privacy policies, they will not release any information as to why. It is also reported that Marie had two DUI convictions on her record.

Marie and Mitchel had just bought a membership to the club that day and the murder weapon was rented from the gun range. Though background checks are required when someone buys a firearm, gun range owners can’t legally perform any kind of check on people who bring their own guns or rent ones from the range. No one from Shoot Straight Gun Range would comment.

 Hayes, Haley and Richard Heatwole

CANDLER, N.C. — I had been following a story over the New Years holiday in which a man had allegedly shot and killed his ex-wife, two neighbors and then abducted his two young children. The last I had checked before crashing last night, was that police were still looking for him driving a white Toyota Tundra. I woke up this morning to see that the three had been located at a residence, and that a standoff was live and in progress.

According to Steve Huff over at True Crime Report, shit went down on New Years Day when 911 calls came in about a shooting. When police arrived at a neighborhhod on Old Highway 19-23 they found three bodies in two houses. Two of the victims have not been identified, but one of them was Angela Heatwole, 49. The alleged shooter was reportedly 45-year-old Richard Heatwole, Angela’s estranged husband and father of their two children. After the shooting, Richard left the scne taking Hayes Heatwole, 6, and Haley Heatwole, 10, along with him. This triggered a statewide Amber Alert.

Police recieved a tip this morning that Richard, who has a history of domestic violence, and two children were at his cousin’s house in nearby Taylorsville, N.C. A hostage situation was then initiated while police tried to get Richard to release the two girls. Sometime during the night, a single gunshot was heard and as of this morning news reports are saying that Richard was dead, victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The two girls where then released to officials.

It’s good to know that these two escaped this ordeal with their lives, but what a way to start a new year.  No word on the who the two people were in the other home, but I am gonna take a guess that they were Angela’s parents. I start off the morning with cocaine dried around my nostrils staring at the blotchy back of a passed out hooker, and these two girls may have just lost their parents and a set of grandparents in 24 hours.
