I feel bad for the victim’s kids and family losing a loved one in this manner, and hopefully justice will be served on the person(s) responsible. Millbrook’s sister claims she begged for the staff to search the room but that they refused to do so. Hell, now it’s being reported that even the police investigating the disappearance never actually searched the room. So now the tragedy of losing a loved one will be made worse by news sites, and blogs like ours, who will focus on the fact that a body had been rotting under a mattress people were sleeping on.

But HOLY FUCKING HEEBIE-JEEBIES! How many of you have not talked about this exact scenario…or thought of it when staying in a hotel? I mean I am a morbid son of a bitch, so I ALWAYS think there is a body stuffed under a bed when I stay in a hotel. I know this cannot be the first time this has ever happened, but it is the first I can remember posting about here. Cripes. The thought of sleeping soundly on a bed while a woman was rotting mere inches below you is just CREEPY AS HELL.

Let’s hear some of your motel\hotel horrors. I am sure no one can beat the fact that at least five people slept on top of a dead woman, but let’s find out. Personally, aside from some messy business in a motel bathtub and a hooker, the worst experience I ever had was at the Astro motel in Myrtle Beach, SC. Me and a girlfriend arrived during a holiday weekend on a spur of the moment trip, and found there were no rooms anywhere aside from the Astro. We spent the night laying on top of our beach towels while listening to meth heads run back and forth outside screaming and banging on the doors. Hell, our room had a pentagram BURNED into the floor.

NEW ORLEANS – I grew up in south Louisiana, so even as I stand at my kitchen window to look out on the still-melting snow of my Midwestern back yard, any mention of the area around New Orleans makes me break out in a sweat, curse the humidity, and hear endless frog-song. Yes, I have a love-hate thing with that part of the country, but in no instance do I want to run my eyes over any Louisiana-based news story that includes the suggestion that “Foul play is suspected,” but this is one of them. 54-year-old Douglas Schantz, head of Houston-based Sequent Energy Management, was last seen about 2:00 a.m. Friday on Bourbon Street, clad in suit jacket and tie, by colleagues who had accompanied him to a ceremony marking a donation to Tulane University’s energy graduate program. Concern arose when Schantz failed to make his expected Friday morning meeting at the airport with with daughter, failed to show up for a noon staff meeting, and was later reported by his wife as having not returned home. “This is exceptionally unusual,” said Mark Homestead of Sequent. “We are a business where we are all on call 24/7 and we all carry BlackBerrys. He usually responds within 10 minutes with phone calls and e-mails.”

The last known surveillance video of Schantz shows him leaving a bar he had visited with his colleagues alone shortly after 2 a.m. He is described as white, blue-eyed, and about 5′11″ tall and 200 pounds. Anyone with information should call the New Orleans Police Department (504-821-2222), Detective Gwen Guggenheim (504-658-5300), or Crime Stoppers (504-822-1111). Sequent Energy Management is matching the $5,000 reward offered by the local office of Crime Stoppers.

Lisa Blaylock and Tanya Wilt, the couple’s neighbors, said Shannon’s mother approached them and asked, “Have you guys seen anybody pull in our driveway today?” They responded, “No. Why?” “Cause my baby’s missing.” Because of the calm tone Shannon’s mother used when speaking to Lisa and Tanya, the women assumed she was joking with them. Both women say Shannon’s father was very upset about her disappearance but the mother didn’t seem to be. Rumors are floating around that Shannon’s mother admitted to killing her and burying the body somewhere in the woods near a landfill. Law enforcement won’t confirm the stories. “We’re not going to go into specifics about what she may or may not have said or not said but we’re not doing any digging at the old landfill. The old landfill now is being a staging area for the ground teams,” said Washington County Sheriff Bobby Haddock. Authorities say they do have a person of interest in the disappearance, but aren’t saying any more than that. Sheriff Haddock says nothing makes them think the baby has been abducted, but they realize the baby didn’t just crawl or walk out on her own.

UPDATE 11-03-09 — Well it didn’t end with good news, but I am sure everyone figured it wouldn’t. I mean there was always the hope that the phones were submerged in the vehicle and they were just wandering around lost, but that isn’t the case. At around 4:00 today, searchers found the three girls dead inside the Cherokee which was submerged in a stock pond.

Investigators have not stated that there is a link between the two girls, but the similarities are pretty damn peculiar. White’s remains were found in 2006 in a wooded area in the Town of Greenfield, New York about four miles from where Hammond’s skull was found. Both White and Hammond were last seen in two different trailer parks less than one mile from each other in the town of Milton, New York. Obviously, this can be a coincidence, but the questions has been raised. Is there a serial killer operating in the area?

Police are not ruling it out, but it looks like they may focus their attention on the suspect in White’s death — John Regan of Connecticut. Regan tried to abduct a female Saratoga Springs High School student from the school parking four months after White’s disappearance. Luckily, the girl was able to escape. Regan, then 50, was convicted of attempted kidnapping. Currently an inmate at Clinton Correctional Facility, Regan was subsequently convicted of kidnapping in a 1993 case, and stalking and restraining another victim in a 2004 case.

On Wednesday night, the Missouri State Highway Patrol searched for Elizabeth using a helicopter with a thermal imaging radar. Today, 60 people resumed the search focusing on a section of woods several hundred yards in diameter, which police had narrowed by triangulating the girl’s cell phone location. The battery had died by this morning and an uneven terrain, high brush and soaking weather are hampering the search effort.

“If you go to Iowa and look at a flat piece of farmland that’s 140 acres, you go, well it’s not that big.’ You translate that to Missouri and you use the same thing, you walk a long time to cover that same amount of land,” White said. “It’s muddy out there now. It’s difficult terrain, it’s difficult weather.”, said Cole County Sheriff Greg White.

And before anyone starts bashing her parents for her walking that stretch of road, a commentor over on Topix noted that the girl’s parents were not alerted that she was being sent home from her friends house. So before we get into that territory, let’s wait for some more information to come in.

Update 10-23-09 An older juvenile led authorities to Elizabeth Olten’s body, deep in the woods near where an exhaustive search for the child was under way for much of the day. Little information on this other juvenile aside from them being described as a “person of interest.”

UPDATE 11-03-09

By now everyone knows who the 15-year-old suspect is. She is the older sister of the girl Olten was visiting. Already people are pouring over everything she has said or written on any of the myriad of social accounts she has. These are her alleged Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Sing Snap and disabled Youtube account (cached version here) which was on Nancy Grace tonight. Specifically her hobbies of “cutting, killing people.” This will be interesting. She seemed like a normal teen chick to me. I’m curious if this was an accidental death that she tried to cover up. In the Youtube video it shows her getting her brothers to touch an electric fence.

The following are simply rumors gathered from emails being sent and chat logs being posted. But supposedly this was a planned murder, a hole dug earlier. She also had help burying the body. She had cut the Olten’s neck and wrists purely to see if she could get away with it. None of this is confirmed, of course. But hey, it’s out there and I’m curious how close tot he truth it is. All stuff we will find out in the future.

Update 11-18-09

Here is the mugshot of 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante the teen girl charged with strangling and slitting the throat of Elizabeth Olten. She’s a sick puppy and has shown some disturbing behavior for years, including cutting and an attempted suicide at 13.

To make matters even worse, one week ago there was a failed abduction attempt in this area. A 5-year-old-girl was approached by a Hispanic woman driving a blue sedan with two Hispanic males. She told the little girl that her mother had instructed her to get in the car. The little girl refused and got upset, attracting the attention of a neighbor who intervened.

Here is a mini  time-line from what I have gleaned from the online reports:

Monday 2:45 p.m – Walking the mile walk home ahead of other kids
Monday 3:05 p.m – Siblings arrive home to find sister not there. Somer’s mother’s boyfriend begins walking the neighborhood
Monday 4:00 p.m. – Mother calls home to check on kids, immediately calls authorities
Tuesday 9 a.m. – Amber Alert
Tuesday All Day- 100 Clay County deputies, law enforcement officers from neighboring counties, the FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement scoured a residential Orange Park neighborhood began scouring the area using helicopters, horses and dogs. 57 sex offenders have been interviewed within a 3-mile radius, and their homes and yards have been searched. The search was expanded Tuesday to a 5-mile radius, and officials say they will interview 30 more registered sex offenders.
Tuesday 7:30 p.m. – Candlelight Vigil held

Here is some heart-breaking video from showing Somer’s mother as she relays the last time she saw Somer – and laments on whether she told Somer she loved her or not.

Also, here is the walk they took. I took a Google Streets Stroll down that path and it is VERY residential with a lot of places for her to go off the path if she were mad at her sister. There is the possibility that she was never ahead of them for long, maybe even hiding and letting them get in front of her. She also had to walk past a ball park of some type where strangers to the neighborhood could go unnoticed.

Update
Like a lot of people had already been thinking, this missing person story will not end well. The body of a small child has been found in the Chesser Island Road Landfill in Flokstin, Ga. This particular landfill is the end of the route for trucks collecting trash in Somer’s hometown of Orange Park, FL. Police have not confirmed that the body is Somer’s, but what would be the odds of it being another child?

Update 10/22 – Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler states that investigators have identified the body of Somer Thompson. An autopsy, scheduled to be performed today at the Medical Examiner’s office in Savannah, should help determine a cause of death.

It reminds me of Silence of the Lambs. Seeing the devastated parents not only getting their daughter’s face out there, but also hopefully pleading with someone who may be holding her against her will. That has got to be a nightmare.

Update – A little more info. Her purse and cell phone were found in the parking lot. The battery from the cell phone was removed. Also, she had went to use the restroom, but later called her friend in the arena and told them that she weas outside of the arena and could not get back in. Rules there state that once you walk out of the building, you do not get back in.

Update: 10-29-09

Here is the timeline outlined by Virginia State Police:

8:20 pm – 9:00 pm – Outside JPJ - State police say Harrington left John Paul Jones Arena about 8:20 that Saturday night. At 8:48 Morgan had a phone conversation with friends telling them that she couldn’t get back into the arena and that she would find her own way back home. Harrington was last seen in the JPJ area through 9:00.

9:00 pm – 9:10 pm – University Hall Area - Between 9:00 and 9:10 she was seen walking through the parking lot at University Hall.

9:10 pm – 9:20 pm – Lannigan Field Area - Between 9:10 and 9:20 she was spotted in the Lannigan Field grassy parking lot, which is also where her purse was found. She appeared to be with or near a group of people. They left without her.

9:20 pm – 9:30 pm – Copeley Road Bridge Area - The timeline ends at the Copeley Road Bridge. Harrington was last seen in that area between 9:20 and 9:30.

Update: 01-26-2010 – Looks like the search may be over. The skeletal remains of a person with blond hair wearing dark clothing and a bracelet ws found by a farmer on his Albemarle County farm. Albemarle County police have confirmed that Gil and Dan Harrington, Morgan Harrington’s parents, are on their way to the Virginia State Police office in Albemarle County, where a 5 p.m. press conference is scheduled. The farm is 10 miles southwest of where Harrington was last seen.

When Mahoney arrived at that location, she did not see her boyfriend. She drove around for an hour and decided to head back to the apartment they shared hoping he had found another way home. He did not. Mahoney called police, who told her to wait the standard 24 hours. She then called hospitals and friends to no avail. On Friday, she filed a missing persons report.

Boston police spokesman Joe Zanoli said they had “found no indicators of any foul play, but that possibility can’t be ruled out.” On Sunday, Boston police spokesman James Kenneally said authorities “are still in the process of trying to locate the individual. We encourage anyone who knows anything about Mr. Hurley’s whereabouts to contact police.”

Police are reviewing security camera videotapes from Spaulding Rehab, the Nashua Street jail and parking areas near the TD Garden. They are also searching an area near Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital as well as the Charles River. Hurley is 150 pounds and 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was last seen wearing Nike sneakers, blue jeans, a green T-shirt and a red North Face jacket. Anyone with information about Hurley’s whereabouts is asked to call the Boston Police Department at 617-343-4248.
I’ve had to wait outside a few jails. Can be a bit skeevy depending on where you are at.

As everyone knows by now, the body of William Hurley’s body was found floating in the Charles River. No foul play is suspected, but the investigation is still ongoing. His cell phone was found smashed in an earlier search of the area he was last seen. There are no fences or barriers at the water’s edge near where Hurley’s body was found.

Alyea’s father posted a message on the Facebook group page:

“I would first like to say how much I appreciate all of your efforts to help me find my daughter. I cannot even explain how much it means to me that everyone was so thoughtful. The Overland Park Police just announced that they have 3 people in custody… for the murder of Keighley. They are going to bring her home to us real soon. I must go be with my family now, but please never forget her. I love you, Keighley. Dad.”

Keighley had was involved in a domestic violence situation on Sept. 28 when an ex-boyfriend and his sister got into an violent altercation in which Keighley intervened. That ex was one of the people originally questioned. After going missing, all communication from her had ceased, which threw up red flags immediately.

“She would get on the Internet every single day,” said her uncle, Ed Frentrop, “and talk to people on Facebook and talk to people on her phone and text people. She talked to her mom and dad every single day. She talked to my daughter almost every single day through texting and whatnot. Then everything stopped.”

Not much in way of other information at this time, but I will be sure to update the story as more information becomes official.
