Now, before we all start jumping to conclusions with assumptions that maybe, just maybe Angelo was an abusive asshole who deserved to die in his Lazy-Boy, it appears that Angelo was a loving and caring father who fought long and hard to gain custody of his youngest son. Angelo obtained primary custody of Michael in October after the boy repeatedly ran away from his mother’s home. There have been numerous police contacts with the family, but nearly all were custody related – there have been no reports of any abuse between father and son. One neighbor told authorities that Michael was “prone to temper tantrums,” but Angelo never lost his temper with the boy. Michael was his life. I’ll be keeping an eye on this one – I’d like to see if the autism defense pans out.

Chester Johnson, the boy’s father, is now speaking out demanding an apology from the school as well as the town’s mayor. He states that his son was simply drawing a picture of Jesus being crucified after the teacher told the class to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas. Taunton’s school superintendent defended actions by school administrators and states that the picture that Johnson is showing the media isn’t even the picture that the teacher witnessed the boy drawing. They also state “there was no request or assignment by the teacher for students to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas or any religious holiday.”

Mayor Charles Crowley said he wants a school-wide policy put into place to prevent such an incident from happening again. He also ordered the school department to pay for the psychiatric exam the child had to undergo as a condition of returning to school. So keep that in mind any of you little psychos out there who want to vent their frustrations out on paper…just draw scenes from stories in the Bible and you will be A-OK.

I’m going to include the entire statement from the school regarding this matter:

It has been reported in the media that a student was suspended over drawing a rendering of Jesus Christ on the cross. This report is totally inaccurate, and the student was never suspended. This incident occurred nearly two weeks ago, it was handled appropriately, and the school staff and family had been working together in a cooperative and positive manner.

The drawing published in various media outlets is not the same drawing that was discovered by the teacher. It has not been established whether the drawing was actually completed in school. Contrary to what has been reported, there was no request or assignment by the teacher for students to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas or any religious holiday.

The inaccuracies in the original media story have resulted in a great deal of criticism and scrutiny of the system that is unwarranted.

In this case, as in any other case involving the wellbeing of a student, the administration acted in accordance with the school department’s well-established protocol. This protocol is centered upon the student’s care, wellbeing and educational success. The protocol includes a review of the student’s records, discussions with staff, central administration, school psychologists and other community resources. Decisions were made only after this protocol had been completed, including a consultation with a veteran staff member with a background in clinical psychology and a Ph.D.

It is unfortunate that the actions of our district staff have been classified as “religious” in nature when, in fact, they were based solely on the wellbeing of the student. At this time of year, Christmas is one of many religious and secular holidays. Taunton, known as The Christmas City, takes pride as a community in celebrating this Christian holiday together with Hanukah, Kwanzaa, and many others. In the school district, it is our goal to provide the opportunity for all students to be well-rounded, and it is our responsibility to help them attain their social, emotional and academic goals regardless of their religious affiliation.

Administrators in the Taunton Public Schools have an open-door policy and a willingness to discuss and examine any parental concerns and/or actions taken by the teachers, administrators, and other staff. It is difficult for us to address issues when they originate in a media news story, and it is unfortunate that this is the path that was taken in this case. As with any issue involving a child, regardless of a parent’s choice to discuss it in the media, it is the school district’s responsibility to act first in the best interests of the student and family, which we will continue to do in this matter. We will not now, nor will we ever, compromise our obligation in this regard.

Now seriously, who is doing the over-reacting here? The school who was simply following protocol’s put in place to help protect students from violence, or the Mayor, the boy’s father, and a good chunk of “Christians” who are jumping on this story to show everyone how much they are persecuted? Let me know what you think after reading the source article. Personally, I feel the school was acting in the overall student body’s best interest, and Mayor Charles Crowley should be ashamed of himself.

I wonder if everyone would be so quick to condemn the school’s actions had this been a Muslim kid who had drawn scenes of disbelievers of Allah wearing garments of fire with boiling liquid being poured on their heads as their skin melts off all while being tortured with iron hooks as described in the Quran?

They are not using the term “brutal” loosely. This kid pinned Lori down with his knees and went Holy Hell on her. The blade he was using was a 2 1/2 inch blade from a Swiss-Army knife. It bent when he tried stabbing her in the skull. Undeterred, Nicholas then switched to a saw blade. Reports are that Nicholas suffered wounds himself as the blade kept closing on his hand during the stabbing.

One of the witnesses who tried to stop the attack had blood flung all over his glasses when Nicholas slashed at him with the knife and told him to “fuck off”. You can read the charging documents here and see for yourself. This kid went absolutely bonkers.

The reason why he is with his mother, and not in jail or a juvenile facility is because in New Mexico, you cannot detain anyone under the age of 12. Valencia County DA Lemuel Martinez has concerns that the boy may act out again on someone else, but CYFD spokesperson Romaine Serna says the boy is being closely monitored. “There are several people in the home on a weekly basis. A CYFD clinical social worker is providing services to the family as well as contract providers. So there are several visits during a week,” he said.

The boy’s attorney, Jeff Buckels, says it is preposterous that the boy would be capable of committing deliberate murder. “Murder in this state and everywhere else requires premeditation and requires some appreciation for what is going on,” said Buckels. “I think it is basically obvious to almost anyone that is asking too much of a 10-year-old.”

Back in September, his mother, Monica Albear, defended her son saying that he was being abused. “They’re basically trying to say he’s crazy and he’s not, he’s a very intelligent, he is very loving, he’s very caring. He worries about his mom a lot. I would like for people to quit voicing, putting mean things on the Internet, because it’s just not fair,” Albear said. “They don’t know who he is, they don’t know what he’s been through, they don’t know what my family has been through. And I think it’s wrong and I think my son deserves justice.”

Why would she leave Benjamin and his siblings in the custody of Bryon if she knew that there was abuse in the home. Some reports state that she has been absent from the children most of their life – but her claims of abuse are not unfounded. Children, Youth and Families Department reported its investigators checked out the the home at least seven times in the last several years but said they never found evidence of abuse. Of course the calls could be vindictive in nature, but still – this fact along with Benjamin’s statements give a bit of validity to the claim.

While we do not have the full details of the events leading up to the shooting, you heard the 911 call. What do you think? On Wednesday night, the Missouri State Highway Patrol searched for Elizabeth using a helicopter with a thermal imaging radar. Today, 60 people resumed the search focusing on a section of woods several hundred yards in diameter, which police had narrowed by triangulating the girl’s cell phone location. The battery had died by this morning and an uneven terrain, high brush and soaking weather are hampering the search effort.

“If you go to Iowa and look at a flat piece of farmland that’s 140 acres, you go, well it’s not that big.’ You translate that to Missouri and you use the same thing, you walk a long time to cover that same amount of land,” White said. “It’s muddy out there now. It’s difficult terrain, it’s difficult weather.”, said Cole County Sheriff Greg White.

And before anyone starts bashing her parents for her walking that stretch of road, a commentor over on Topix noted that the girl’s parents were not alerted that she was being sent home from her friends house. So before we get into that territory, let’s wait for some more information to come in.

Update 10-23-09 An older juvenile led authorities to Elizabeth Olten’s body, deep in the woods near where an exhaustive search for the child was under way for much of the day. Little information on this other juvenile aside from them being described as a “person of interest.”

UPDATE 11-03-09

By now everyone knows who the 15-year-old suspect is. She is the older sister of the girl Olten was visiting. Already people are pouring over everything she has said or written on any of the myriad of social accounts she has. These are her alleged Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Sing Snap and disabled Youtube account (cached version here) which was on Nancy Grace tonight. Specifically her hobbies of “cutting, killing people.” This will be interesting. She seemed like a normal teen chick to me. I’m curious if this was an accidental death that she tried to cover up. In the Youtube video it shows her getting her brothers to touch an electric fence.

The following are simply rumors gathered from emails being sent and chat logs being posted. But supposedly this was a planned murder, a hole dug earlier. She also had help burying the body. She had cut the Olten’s neck and wrists purely to see if she could get away with it. None of this is confirmed, of course. But hey, it’s out there and I’m curious how close tot he truth it is. All stuff we will find out in the future.

Here is the mugshot of 15-year-old Alyssa Bustamante the teen girl charged with strangling and slitting the throat of Elizabeth Olten. She’s a sick puppy and has shown some disturbing behavior for years, including cutting and an attempted suicide at 13.

In a statement released by the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District today, superintendent Joseph DiLorenzo indicated that students had come forward with information that may have averted the alleged plot. The teen is currently being evaluated in a psychiatric facility and has been charged as a juvenile, facing two felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Another April 20th rolls around, and another day of wondering what kid out there will use it as an excuse to kill some classmates. This story comes on the heels of Sue Klebold, mother of Dylan Klebold, publishing her essay in Oprah’s O Magazine – a very interesting and informative read, btw. Dave Cullen, the author of Columbine (a book we love around here and you should have read by now) commented on it earlier this month.

It is being reported that Brewer owed 15-year-old Matthew Bent, $40 dollars for a video game. For repayment, Bent tried to steal Brewer’s father’s bicycle on Sunday night. “Off my front porch– walked right on to my front porch,” recalled Michael Brewer Sr. “We pressed charges and had the kid arrested,” said Valerie Brewer, the victim’s mother. Bent was arrested, taken to a detention center and released to his parents on Monday, police said.

Steven Shelton and Matthew Bent, both 15, and 13-year-old Jeremy Jarvis all face charges of aggravated battery. Jesus Mendez, who police said actually flicked the lighter, faces charges of attempted second degree murder.

Brewer’s sister Malissa Durkee said she knows the teens who attacked her brother. “I’ve seen all of those kids,” Durkee said. “I’ve met all of those kids that did that and it just tears me up to know that they would hurt my brother like that.”

CBS 4 News was able to get one of the accused’s parents to talk to them about the incident. Patricia Hollis’s son is one of the teens accused in the attack. A police report says that her son helped surround Brewer:

HOLLIS: “I feel so sorry for (Michael Brewer), I really do. And it’s sad. It really is.”
CBS4: “As far as your son’s involvement?”
HOLLIS: “That’s sad too. For him to even be in an atmosphere like that.”
CBS4: “Did he have anything to do with it?”
HOLLIS: “As far as I know, no he didn’t. Wrong place at the wrong time.”

Michael Brewer

One hell of a price to pay over a video game. I hope they make examples out of all five of the teens charged. We handled things a bit differently when I was these kids’ ages. Speaking of, here are three of the accused:

Jeremy Jarvis, 13, Denver Colorado Jarvis, 15, Matthew Bent, 15 – (Joe Cavaretta, Sun Sentinel / October 13, 2009)

One kid I had an issue with for some dumb reason or another, asked if he could have a glass of water after a game of football in my front yard. Sure, no problem. I went inside and grabbed a large plastic cup and then went into the bathroom and dunked the cup into the toilet. Whoever had used the toilet last did not give it a courtesy flush as their were still bits of toilet paper floating around. Well now they were floating around inside the plastic cup as I added some ice cubes to it. That’s the kind of revenge I like – watching a kid I dislike unknowingly drink toilet water with bits of used toilet paper swirling around in it – not setting his ass on fire.

Click hear to listen to the 911 calls. But let me tell you, it is heartbreaking and I would advise you NOT to listen to them. You hear Michael in agony screaming for someone to help him. It is extremely disturbing and absolutely enraged me beyond the point of being mentally healthy. If I was this kids’ father, I would kill every one of those motherfucking kids. I know that is a knee-jerk reaction and would solve absolutely nothing – but my kid is around Michael’s age and if I were to hear this shit, I would go insane. But not before I did something really stupid to four kids.

It is not known if this kid is even going to survive. Doctors fear his organs are going to start failing. There are little signs that Michael Brewer’s condition is improving, his mother said Thursday: He responds to her voice. He makes motions with his hands. He likes it when his mom rubs his feet.

Quinn Glover, Christopher Gribble, Steven Spader, William Marks

At around 4 a.m. Sunday, Steven Spader, 17; Christopher Gribble, 19; William Marks, 18; and Quinn Glover, 17 have all been arrested for their part in the crimes. Spader and Gribble were charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit first degree murder. Marks and Glover were charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, and armed robbery – although prosecutors claim that Glover and Marks were both armed with a deadly weapon, and Glover was fully aware that the occupants of the home would be killed.

Kimberly Cates

Cate’s husband was away on business but flew back to be with his daughter in the hospital. She is expected to survive, but she will obviously have some major issues because of this. What a pity that these idiots could not have broken into a tweaker couple’s house or something. By all reports, Kimberly was an awesome lady. John Quinlan, a Mont Vernon selectman, and friend of the Cates family for five years described 42-year-old mother and nurse Kimberly Cates as an unusually friendly, happy woman devoted to her daughter.

“She was very much the extrovert,” Quinlan said. “The mother and daughter were inseparable. They were almost best friends as well. That’s what I think makes this worse because you can’t imagine anyone having a bad thought about her or a gripe with her.”

Some information on the teens have come to light as friends all report the same thing. Four kids who all fell into a downward spiral over recent years. Spader was a longtime Boy Scout who in recent months grew increasingly distant and depressed. He has a lengthy criminal record including threatening teens with a tire iron after ramming their car, charges of possessing stolen stereo equipment, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and marijuana possession charges. Most of these within recent months.

Gribble was a home-schooled Mormon who was planning to become a church missionary. Like a lot of kids raised in that environment (not all, people) he ended up rebelling X10 becoming a dark and brooding figure itching to lash out and become very fond of knives. It is reported that Marks is insecure and angst-ridden teen, and took a turn for the worse after meeting Spader. The same goes for Glover, a musician who performed in coffee shops, sang in the chorus, and starred in a school production of Cabaret.

While New Hampshire does have a death penalty, these boys are not eligible for it. According to the New Hampshire attorney general’s office, the crime does not fit within the state’s definition of a capital murder. The death penalty is only on the table when a law enforcement or judicial officer is killed in the line of duty, in the case of murder-for-hire, if the accused is currently serving a life sentence or when the murder occurs in connection with a kidnapping, drug crime or sexual assault.

Whatever. I am sure that this case will continue to get more heinous as some of these teens turn on each other (my bet is on Marks) and the details on exactly what transpired in that home is revealed. To be able to attack a defenseless woman in her home while she slept in her bed is one thing, but to be able to do the same to an 11-year-old girl? Seriously, fuck ‘em. Fuck their childhoods.

Tom Chester

Timothy and Victor became friends some time after Victor moved to Vegas from California six years ago. Victor had few friends because he felt that he scared most people. But not Timothy Chester. He and Timothy formed a friendship that included spending a lot of time playing online games – and according to Victor, listening to Timothy talk about how much he hated his parents and wanted to kill them. According to Timothy, a pact was made in which Victor would kill Timothy’s parents and then Timothy would return the favor and kill Victor’s. This all came together following an argument Timothy had with his family earlier this week regarding responsibility. The plan was for Timothy’s entire family to be killed, including his sister and brother-in-law. Of course nothing ever goes exactly as planned, but from what I can gather from the source links, this is what happened on Wednesday.

About 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Thomas Chester took his son to a nearby high school to get his transcripts and then dropped him off at Victor’s house. At noon, Timothy and Victor walked back to Timothy’s parent’s mobile home. During this walk, Timothy handed Victor a gun that was taken from his father’s safe. When they got there, Timothy’s mother was asleep on the couch in the living room and his father was in the kitchen. Timothy and Victor went into Timothy’s bedroom after briefly speaking with Timothy’s father.

Victor states that once in the bedroom he tried giving the gun back to Timothy and told him to put it back in the safe. Timothy then handed the gun back to Victor and told him if he didn’t do it, he would shoot him instead. The two left the bedroom and Victor shot Tom as he stood next to the front door. After being shot, Tom then tried to run into the master bedroom, but his own son got to the room ahead of him and prevented him from entering.

Timothy then retrieved a semi-automatic pistol from a bedroom closet and loaded it. When he left the bedroom, he saw his father lying on the floor behind the couch. Carla, who was physically disabled, stood up and began screaming. Timothy, being the greasy fucking pussy he is, ran out of the trailer taking the keys to his parent’s SUV leaving Victor behind in the trailer.

Victor allegedly shot Carla at some point during this time and then used a kitchen knife to stab her in the throat. He stated that he heard a horn blowing outside, and after washing up in the kitchen sink he walked outside and Timothy, along with the SUV, were gone – I guess ending the plan they had to flee to California and then Guatemala. Victor walked home and informed his mother of what he had done and asked her to call police for him. he denied that there was any pact as Timothy stated during his talk with police, but did add that the rest of Timothy’s family should be worried as Timothy wanted them dead as well. He added that Timothy was smarter than he looked.

Neighbors said that the couple were well liked and “pillars of the community” and that “they were the first to help, to organize events…always there at the ready.” “She was a character,” neighbor Garrianne Sage said of Carla Chester. “She didn’t deserve it. She didn’t deserve it at all.” They also commented that Timothy was a quiet guy who kept his head down when he walked the neighborhood, but that he did help out other neighbors and was great with his nephews. Victor’s mother has declined to talk to any news agencies at this point.

Both teens were booked into the Clark County Detention Center on two counts each of murder with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy to commit murder. They also face one count each of burglary for their involvement in the double slaying. Timothy Chester was charged with an additional count of robbery with a deadly weapon.
