Panama City Beach, FL – As if small children aren’t enough of a black hole of need, nature comes along and plays another cruel joke on the able-bodied by saddling them with the elderly.  One day you are thanking your lucky stars that your babies are finally able to use the toilet without assistance and next thing you know, you are having to invest in adult diapers for your parents.  Life seems so unfair sometimes.  It’s a good thing that most of us love our families enough to gladly put up with this inconvenience.  After all, they took care of us and allowed us to live when we were screaming toddlers and snotty teens, the least we could do is return the favor.  Or at the very least hire someone to return the favor for us – someone like Geraldine Shockley, a caretaker hired by 94 year-old Bessie Borth and her family.  Oh wait, Shockley wasn’t a great caretaker.  Actually, she was a pretty shitty one.  Borth was found dead, and it wasn’t from natural causes.

Early Wednesday Morning, Shockley called 911 saying that she found Borth dead on the floor of her apartment.  When law enforcement arrived, they found Borth’s body at the bottom of a staircase with a broken lamp and coffee table strewn on top of her.  Things looked hinky so they investigated a little further.  After confronting Shockley about the inconsistencies, she stated that Borth had fallen down the stairs and when she didn’t die from the fall, she placed a pillow over her face and suffocated her.  Upon further questioning, Shockley finally admitted to also being responsible for pushing Borth down the stairs.

Shockley is claiming to have snapped.  She says the elderly woman was mean to her, using profanities and *gasp* using the Lord’s name in vain.  Sounds about right. I mean, you can’t be expected to take that kind of abuse and not ever lose your shit.  We are only human. Right?

WRONG.  Apparently, Shockley was already under investigation for taking money from Borth’s banking accounts.  It is alleged that she had stolen thousands of dollars from the woman.  As investigators looked even deeper into her past, they found that the 78 year-old caretaker had served time in the early 80’s for shooting and killing someone in a domestic dispute.  Not only that, they are looking into a couple of other cases where elderly persons have died while under her care.  Wow.  You would think that if she had some experience under her belt, she would not have carried out this murder like a bumbling idiot.

Who knows? Maybe at 78 years of age, she figured it was going to be her turn soon to require a caretaker and didn’t want to end up with someone like herself.  Prison is about the same as some nursing homes in alot of peoples eyes and you can always count on others to watch out for your civil liberties while you are in there.  Too bad.  I think she deserves to be treated the same way she treated Ms. Borth, a vulnerable adult who depended on her to make sure she was safe and comfortable during her last years of life.

Salt Lake City, UT – What on earth would possess a couple of grown ass men to knock the crap out of their elderly grandmother? A grandmother, who I’m sure, is supporting their loser asses? A couple of thug wannabe’s, the Hansen brothers, that’s who. Here we have Michael, 20, and Christopher, 22 — both live with their grandma and both are accused of not only beating up their grandmother, but pissing on her afterward. Really guys, what the fuck? It takes two of you to take down one 66-year-old lady? And, while she’s in the shower, no less. Authorities believe the whole thing started when Christopher forced his way into the bathroom…

He started off by tossing bottles of shampoo and baby powder at her. Then, the little asshole allegedly punched the woman in the face, causing her to fall and hit her head. He then pissed on her, stormed out of the bathroom, and damaged a cabinet in the living room. Michael, perhaps feeling left out, shoved his grandma as she was exiting the bathroom, and, just for good measure, hit her. Then he pissed on her too! Not through with his little tirade, he began punching holes in the walls. An officer who responded to the scene noted bruising on the woman’s face and a laceration to her head. Also visible was the damage done inside the home. Both pussies have been charged with aggravated abuse or neglect of a disabled or elder adult, a third-degree felony, as well as lewdness and criminal mischief, both class B misdemeanors. They are being held in lieu of $25,000 bail. There is no word on grandma’s condition, but I do hope that she’s ok. Assholes. Oh, and Michael? What’s with the retarded eyebrows? Ya fuckin’ clown…

Black Diamond, WA –  Christopher Wise, 41, was a lazy son who didn’t have a job and lived with his mother.  That alone isn’t a crime, but allowing Ruby Wise, 88, to slowly starve to death is.  He lived downstairs while his mother was confined to the upstairs of their home.  Out of sight doesn’t always mean out of mind. Wise’s mother began to wail and moan in pain.  He bought himself a pair of earplugs.  Her cries of pain and anguish went on for hours, for days, neighbors were disturbed.

Christopher Wise brushed off neighbors’ concerns for his mother saying she had fallen from her bed in April, and had dementia.  I assume he made the diagnosis himself, as his mother hadn’t been seen by a doctor in over two years.  Finally the cries stopped, Ruby Wise was dead, released from her living hell, weighing only 70 pounds. Medics found several extremely deep and open bed sores on Ruby Wise that exposed her bones. The woman was also extremely emaciated with “no apparent muscle or fatty mass,” the document said. The woman was wearing a hospital gown and an adult diaper, which was heavily soiled, statement said, and lying in a dusty bedroom in between bed sheets that were stained with dried blood, urine, feces and possibly pus.

Christopher Wise was arrested for Homicide by Abuse,  his bond set at $250,000.  He admitted in his statement, “he guessed he should have got more help for her”.  Rest in peace Ruby Wise, your son has already put you through hell.

Clover, S. Carolina–Please, allow me to introduce you to Carl Johnson. A top-notch and upstanding member of society…a fellow that any parent would be proud to call their son. Ok, not really. Carl’s 70-year-old father was just hanging out in the camper behind his home on Thursday when Carl came busting through the door. Carl said something like, “I’ve come to kill you.” He then picked up a metal chair and whacked his dad on the head with it about 4-5 times before swiping the old dude’s wallet from his back pocket.

For some strange, oddball reason, Carl attempted to remove his father’s prosthetic leg. During the struggle, he told his dad, “I’m taking your leg.” I have no idea if the leg actually came off or not. Carl dragged his father out of the camper and tried to take his keys. Dad wasn’t having it…he tossed the keys away and out of reach. Angered further, Carl shoved his father into the side of the camper and returned to the house. Carl’s dad told responding officers that during the fight, his son tried to poke out his left eye, which officers noted “appeared very red.” Dad suffered severe bruising on his head where he was struck with the chair, two lacerations on his left arm, and on his lower left leg.

Carl Johnson, 52, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and strong armed robbery. Bond has been set at $10,000. Police believe alcohol might have been a factor in the assault.

No more free babysitting for you, crazy lady. Jessica Limon, 32, is now facing two counts of elder abuse. If I were grandma, I’d be cutting the screwy bitch out of the will.

Locust Grove, Oklahoma–This story is about a putrid piece of flesh known as Hank Daniel Clifton Montgomery. In February, the degenerate raped a 22-year-old acquaintance in his home–out on bond on that charge, the waste of skin decided to add another notch to his belt. This time, he is being accused of raping an 81-year-old woman.

On May 5th, Montgomery, 35, knocked on the elderly woman’s door, gave her a story about his car breaking down and asked to use her phone. Once inside the woman’s home, he whipped out a knife, forced the victim into another room, and sexually assaulted her. I can not imagine what it’s like to live 81 years on this earth only to have your sense of security stolen from you by someone like this vicious bastard.

Montgomery, picked out of a lineup by the victim, was arrested on Friday and faces charges of rape by instrumentation, forcible sodomy and robbery. His bail has been set at $750,000.

When sheriff’s deputies entered the residence after receiving a tip from an MTA bus driver, they found the 74 year old diabetic, partially blind, partially deaf woman sitting on a couch wearing only a shirt and wrapped in a  blanket.  The blanket and couch were both infested with maggots and cockroaches.  The couch was so soaked in urine, when the deputies lifted it up to see what was underneath, a pool of urine actually ran down the sides.  There was no running water, no heat and the windows did not close.  The toilet was backed up with human waste and raw sewage was falling through the cellar.  To add insult to injury, this asshole charged his mother $450 a month to live there.  Doesn’t that just warm your heart?

The house was condemned and Cunturso was charged with second degree vulnerable adult abuse and embezzlement.  I don’t know about you guys, but I’m thinking  long term care insurance is looking pretty good right now.  Either that or a nice boy toy to take care of me into my senile years.  Or both, whatever.

Ada, Oklahoma–Daniel Whelchel’s grandma has been taking care of him for 18 long years. Mona Whelchel told authorities that she had a strange feeling that, at some point, her grandson was going to try and kill her. Talk about a woman’s intuition–Daniel did just that. He tried to put his grandma out to pasture. The feisty little lady wasn’t quite ready to go, though.

Sunday evening, Daniel asked his grandma for a ride to the store. He insisted on making a side trip to a piece of property the family had recently sold. When the pair arrived on the property, Daniel made his intentions known. ‘Grandma, I have been waiting on you to die naturally, but that has not happened, so I am going to kill you. How do you want it? I can break your neck or I can beat your head,’ Daniel said. ‘Neither,’ she answered. He attacked her. Grabbing her by the throat, he tried to snap her neck, but she got away. He gave chase. When Daniel caught up to his grandma, he started beating and kicking her in the head. Thinking he had done away with her, he left her there, alone, to die. He got into her car and high-tailed it back to her house. The 60-year-old woman hauled herself up and began to crawl…it took her 6 hours to crawl 150-yards to a relative’s home. Her sister took her to the hospital where she is being treated for head injuries–luckily, none of the injuries are life threatening.

When police caught up with Daniel, they showed him a picture of his grandma, her eyes swollen shut and her face covered in bruises. They asked him if he had ever thought about going back to help his grandma. He told them he ‘had thought about it, but that he also thought she would call the cops.’ Oh you little asshole. Daniel Whelchel, 20, will be charged with attempted murder. His bond was set at $250,000. This isn’t his first brush with the law…in 2008, he was arrested on drug and domestic abuse complaints. Asshole.

Carlos Fernandez and Luis Reyes, Jr.

New Port Richey, FL–Carlos Fernandez, 15, and Luis Reyes, Jr., 14, are a couple of real bad-ass little boys. Not only are they thieving little fuckers, robbing homes and businesses in their neighborhood, they are also rapists. These little assholes beat, raped, and robbed an 89-year-old woman.

Authorities believe Fernandez, Reyes, and their 16-year-old partner in crime, Sean Michael Maus, broke into the woman’s home on April 2nd. Maus had done some odd jobs for the woman in the past, and may have considered her an easy victim. The terrible trio ripped off $84, a flashlight, some snack food, and the woman’s car. The car was later recovered.

Fernandez and Reyes weren’t done with the woman yet. They returned to her home early Wednesday morning, this time wearing masks. They beat the woman as she laid in her bed, raped her, and tried to smother her with a pillow. When she tried to fight back by kicking one of the assailants in the nuts, they beat her even harder. They ransacked her house and took off. The victim was later treated for her injuries at a local hospital and released.

Maus gave up the names of his partners after being interrogated for three hours. Detectives are still trying to determine if Maus was involved in the assault and rape of the woman. He was arrested Wednesday and charged with grand theft auto and burglary.

Carlos Fernandez and Luis Reyes, Jr., confessed to the crimes and both are facing charges of attempted first degree murder, sexual battery, grand theft auto and burglary. They are both being charged as adults. The two have also been charged in connection to recent burglaries at Georgia’s Smoke Shop and Jasmine Discount Beverage in Port Richey. Nice kids…your mommas must be so proud!

Carlyle Blackburn

Lake Worth, FL–Every once in awhile, you need to read a feel good story. Guess what? I got one for ya! Meet 40-year-old Carlyle Blackburn, a registered sex offender. Blackburn was released from prison in January after serving 15 years for rape. It looks like Blackburn is at it again…this time though, he got his ass handed to him.

Blackburn snuck into the home of 68-year-old Carol Lynn early Monday morning. Equipped with latex gloves and an 8-inch screwdriver, Blackburn approached Lynne’s bed. ‘He came at me tried to put the covers over my head,’ she says. ‘He started putting his hand over my mouth.’ Carol began to scream. That woke up the dog, a Catahoula Leopard dog, which its owner described as a German Shepherd only ‘a little bit bigger and a little bit stronger.’ The dog didn’t attack Blackburn, but it did make some noise.

The commotion was heard by Carol’s son, Jim Mampe, who was in an upstairs bedroom. Jim went into panic mode…he didn’t bother with the stairs, he jumped right over the banister down to the first floor and made a beeline to his mother’s room.

Blackburn’s eyes widened at the sight of the woman’s pissed off, 6′ 5″-299 lb., son busting into the bedroom. ‘He had a pair of surgical gloves on, and he was trying to hold a blanket over her face,’ Jim said. ‘He was standing over her, and that’s when I tackled him.’

Blackburn, at 5′ 9″-145 lbs., wasn’t much of a match for Jim. Wrestling around on the floor, Blackburn pulled the screwdriver out and tried to stab Jim. Pfffft…Jim, who has been stabbed before and shot twice during his days as a bouncer, wasn’t having it. No way this puny little fuck was gonna do him in. Jim got hold of the screwdriver and gave Blackburn a little taste of karma…he stabbed Blackburn with his own screwdriver, just below the sternum. Blackburn was whining, ‘Let me go. Let me go.’ Jim grabbed him by the throat and replied, ‘Son, you’re gonna die tonight.’ Jim was twisting Blackburn’s esophagus, while keeping the screwdriver implanted in his chest.

During the ruckus, Carol called 911. Jim held Blackburn on the floor until authorities arrived. It took about 6 officers to pull him off. Carlyle Blackburn was hauled to the hospital for treatment then hauled off to the pokey. He is expected to be charged with armed burglary to an occupied dwelling, aggravated battery on an elderly person, felony battery, possession of burglary tools and other pending charges.

Jim and his mother were both treated for minor injuries at the scene. Neither Jim nor Carol had ever seen Blackburn before. ‘Why he picked this house, I don’t know,’ Jim said.

Alyssia Johnson & Curtis Durham

Chandler, TX- There’s far too many innocent and defenseless people being mistreated in this world every day by low-life scum-sucking assholes. We see quite a few of the victims and their perpetrators here on the Dreamin’Demon. The two young adults pictured above claim they were set-up by Alyssia’s parents and are not the ones to blame. What do you think?

It all started when Deputy Fire Marshal Danny Wilson responded on a call he received due to a report of illegal dumping at the Johnson residence. He went to the home, took pictures and ran Johnson’s name. He found out the Chandler police were looking for the owner, Roy Johnson, who was wanted on felony theft charges. Sounds like the police were not looking too hard.

On March 4, 2009, Chandler Assistant Police Chief James Lehman and Deputy Fire Marshal Danny Wilson went to the Johnson home to serve a felony warrant on Roy Johnson. When they arrived, Johnson’s 18-year old daughter, Alyssia Johnson, said he was not home.

The officers could smell a strong odor coming from inside the house when Alyssia opened the front door. They asked to search the home and began to make their way through the house. The officers said they had to watch where they were walking because there were holes in the floor everywhere and there were even holes in the ceiling with stuff hanging down. They said despite the home’s dilapidated conditions, there were nice computers and a nice television inside.

As the officers reached the end of the hall, they noticed a bedroom door closed with a latch on the outside. The latch was to lock someone or something in. When they asked Alyssia what was in there, she told them it was just her retarded uncle and they might not want to go inside.

The officers opened the door and found a 42-year-old man wearing a sweater and an adult diaper sitting on a bare twin bed. His long hair was matted and his beard was shaggy and long. He was covered in feces as was the entire room. The man could only make grunting noises and when he stood, the diaper hung down to his knees. The man was very thin and appeared to be suffering from malnutrition.

When the man realized the door was unlocked, he ran to the kitchen and was so hungry he tried to eat frozen bacon and a TV dinner through the box. Officers said there is no way of knowing how long he had been locked in that room or how long he would have stayed in there if they hadn’t showed up. Allysia Johnson said they kept her uncle confined so he wouldn’t steal their food.

The man was identified as Kerry Cotton. He is a brother to Lea Johnson, who is Allysia’s step-mother. Alyssia’s father, Roy Johnson, and her step-mother were not found in the home at the time and police issued warrants for both of their arrests. It is believed they had prior knowledge that the police were coming and fled leaving their daughter in charge.

Kerry Cotton was treated at East Texas Medical Center in Athens for emaciation and dehydration and is now in the custody of Adult Services. Alyssia Johnson was arrested on site for injury to a mentally ill person, along with her 19-year-old boyfriend, Curtis Durham, who lives next door. Durham was charged of failure to report a felony. Alyssia Johnson remains in the Henderson County Jail with a bond set at $100,000. Durham was released Thursday on a $25,000 bond.

Alyssia’s father Roy Johnson and her stepmother Lea Johnson were arrested by Tyler police at a Tyler fast food restaurant Friday afternoon. They were arrested on charges of injury to the disabled which is a first-degree felony that carries a prison term of five to 99 years.

I agree that there should be two more mugshots up there, but, unfortunately, I was unable to find them. Durham and his mother have spoken out to the news about this. They said they have made previous complaints to the police and APS, which neither were confirmed, and nothing was done. I have witnessed a lot in life to believe in the old adage that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, except at supermarkets, of course. So, why didn’t anyone think of calling 911? I mean, come on! Even the McNugget Queen did it! Were these two fearful of getting blamed or did they really just not care?

…to beat up an elderly lady?

Jeffrey Nelson, Luis Osborne, & Antoinette Baker

El Cajon, CA–Three, two to knock the crap outta her and one to stand by and watch. This fine trio of thug wannabe’s are Jeffrey Nelson, 19, Luis Osborne, 18, and Antoinette Baker, 18. They are responsible for the kidnapping and torture of 75-year-old Natalie “Sandy” Herbst-Vinge.

Nelson, a salesman from a carpet company, first came into contact with Herbst-Vinge last Monday morning…he sold her a $2,000 Kirby vacuum cleaner. Later that evening he returned to her home and asked if he could use her phone. When she turned around to allow him into her home, he attacked her from behind, choking her until she was unconscious. After he tied her hands and feet and slapped duct tape over her mouth, he ransacked her home in search of cash and credit cards. At some point, Nelson called a couple of friends to come and enjoy the mayhem. Enter Osborne and Baker.

It wasn’t enough that Nelson ripped off and choked Herbst-Vinge, I guess he had to prove himself a real thug in front of his friends, so he threw the woman in the trunk of her own car. It was time for a joy ride. The three drove to Ocean Beach in Herbst-Vinge’s car, where they hung out at the Ocean Beach pier. Good times.

When the thugs stopped to gas up the car, with Herbst-Vinge’s gas card, she managed to chew through the duct tape and scream for help. Unfortunately, the only ones to hear her scream were the assholes that kidnapped her. The cries for help earned her a few punches in the face from Nelson and Osborne. When she asked for water, she was punched again. Over and over.

For over 26-hours Herbst-Vinge was tied up and at the mercy of her three captors. 26-hours bound and gagged in the trunk with no food or water. 26-hours of beatings and abuse. In a twist of fate, the trio was busted Tuesday evening after running a red light. When police pulled the them over, Herbst-Vinge was discovered in the trunk. Next to her was a shovel. Had the cops not pulled the assholes over when they did, who knows how this nightmare would have ended for her.

In court on Friday, all three pleaded not guilty to charges of torture, kidnapping, robbery, willful cruelty to an elder causing great bodily injury, and theft from an elder. Nelson also pleaded not guilty to charges of carjacking, kidnapping during a carjacking, attempted murder, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury and burglary. More charges are possible. If convicted on the torture charges, they could be looking at life in prison. A hearing has been set for December 29 to determine if there is sufficient evidence for trial. They are all being held on $2 million bail, each. While Osborn and Nelson showed no emotion in the courtroom, Baker cried like the little bitch she is. She may not have thrown any of the punches, but she didn’t go out of her way to help the woman.

As of Friday, Herbst-Vinge was still hospitalized, it is uncertain when she will be released. Her face is swollen and bruised. Doctors believe she may have suffered a minor heart attack during the ordeal. Her family says that she is up and walking and in good spirits. My heart goes out to you Sandy…heal quickly. And as for the assholes that beat her, I hope that the boys in the big house show ‘em how it’s really done. Assholes.

Natalie “Sandy” Herbst-Vinge

Redwood City, CA - On whom do you rely?  I mean, if everything in your life were to fall apart and you needed someone to help you when you were no longer able to help yourself, who would you turn to?  For me, it would be family.  Whether I needed a loan or a place to stay, there are a number of people who I know would help out, whether or not they’d be happy about it!

Amelia Ramirez knows no such comfort.  Amelia is a 58-year-old woman with the mental capacity of a 5-to-8-year-old.   Her loving and devoted brother and sister took her in and promised to take care of her, but it seems as if they forgot how vulnerable she is somewhere along the way.  Well, that, and they liked getting her monthly disabilty checks quite a bit.

It all started when police received a call on November 18 about a teenager brandishing at knife at a home on MacArthur Avenue.  While police were taking a look around, they happened upon Amelia Ramirez in the backyard, shivering in a thin nightgown.  She had trouble answering their questions, but it turns out that while Bertha Cano Lozano, 45, and her brother Jesus Cano Ramirez, 53, were living in their 3-bedroom house with their 7 pit bulls and Bertha’s 16-year-old daughter (she of knife-brandishing fame), Amelia was living on the dirty, concrete floor of an 8-by-12 foot shed in their back yard.  That’s the shed up in the picture at the top.  Looks comfy, no?

She had a single mattress on the floor, one thin blanket, a lamp, and a small heater with a frayed cord.   What she did NOT have were running water, a TV, a radio, books, etc.  It was pretty much one mentally-incapacitated woman left to rot in a shed.   The family claims she was happy out there, and that she had a Barbie doll and a coloring book for entertainment.  I know that would make me ever-so-much happier in that situation, and I’m sure Amelia would have expressed her appreciation if only she had the mental capacity to do so.

Apparently, Amelia has been living in that shed for 20 years.  Yes, that’s T-W-E-N-T-Y years.   And in a surprising twist, her siblings have been cashing and keeping Amelia’s monthly Social Security checks the whole time.  Furthermore, the prosecution contends that the theft extended to her share of the home which the three siblings equally inherited and from which she was excluded.    A nurse argued at a hearing on December 3 that Amelia Ramirez does not have the mental capacity to understand the theft of her benefits or inheritance.   Doesn’t it warm the cockles of your heart this holiday season?  I’m not entirely sure what cockles are, but mine are all atingle.

Bertha Cano Lozano and big brother Jesus Cano Ramirez have both been charged with elder neglect.  Bertha has also been charged with embezzlement of an elder by a caretaker.  Both have pleaded not guilty to all charges, and remain in custody in lieu of $250,000 bail.  They appeared in court on December 3, where the defense argued that their crimes were being overblown, as they did not participate in activity likely to produce great bodily injury or death.  The smart judge saw it otherwise, and declined to lower bail or drop any charges.  Both are scheduled to return to court December 18 to enter a Superior Court plea and set a trial date.

Amelia is in the care of Adult Protective Services.  I hope the strangers responsible for her will see that she gets some warm clothes, a proper bed, and a little TLC, since her family never did.

Albert Lea, MN – The Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Albert Lea probably isn’t the best place to be if you have Alzheimer’s.  Oh, sure, the nurse’s aides are pretty – but they’ll also spit in your mouth, sexually abuse you, and taunt you until you cry.  Which would be fine if the girls were working at the Albert Lea Dominatrix Emporium, I guess, but doesn’t work out so well in the dementia unit.  After a months-long investigation, four juveniles and two legal adults are facing abuse charges.  The two adults are Brianna Broitzman, 19, and Ashton Larson, 18.

I’d be inclined to think that this case was overblown if I were a casual reader.  After all, these are two very pretty young white girls, right?  They appear to be middle-class at least. Brianna’s old Myspace shows a pretty Albert Lea High School student – popular, on the dance team, not particularly horrid in any way.

But your favorite imp was a nurse in another life, and kids, let me tell ya – it’s not easy to get criminal charges filed in nursing home abuse cases.  This investigation started in May after allegations of elder abuse were filed that dated back to January.  We’re not talking about a two-week he-said she-said thing, here.

In early May, a teenage nurse’s aide was being fired from Good Samaritan for swearing in front of a resident.  She decided not to go down alone, and blew the whistle on at least four other aides, alleging that they were routinely abusing their residents.

Good Samaritan immediately launched an investigation and reported the alleged abuse to the Minnesota Department of Health.  The home also fired the other aides, which tells me that they were cleaning house in a CYA move – but also that they had reason to suspect the informant was telling the truth. Sounds to me like a few charge nurses shoulda gone with ‘em, but hey, that’s just me.

On August 28 of this year, the Minnesota Department of Health released their findings in their investigation of the abuse at Good Samaritan.  The department investigated five aides and found that four of them, primarily Broitzman and Larson, abused fifteen residents repeatedly or witnessed “verbal, sexual and emotional” abuse and did nothing to stop it.  The department filed a civil action to have the aides’ licenses pulled, and turned over their report to police.

The police investigation got a little broader and covered eight aides, of whom six have now been charged. Aside from Broitzman and Larson, the remaining four are being charged with legally mandated failure to report abuse – in other words, they knew what was happening and didn’t do anything.  Two of the teens, Alicia Heilmann (Myspace) and Morgan Walton (Myspace) were juveniles when the crimes were committed, but are both now 18. They’re being tried in juvenile court.

During interviews with investigators, Brianna Broitzman admitted that she and Ashton Larson took photos and videos of residents for fun.  She said that they also poked one female dementia patient in the breast.  Ashton Larson was a bit more forthcoming, and admitted to various abuses including spitting, holding her hand over a resident’s mouth, dry-humping residents, sticking her finger in a resident’s anus, touching a resident’s ass, and getting in bed with residents.  Er, what?  Seriously?  Ew.  Just ewww, Ashton!

Other aides reported that most of the aides knew about the abuse, because it was discussed and laughed over at breaks.  Several aides reported that Brianna and Ashton dispensed spankings to residents, teased them, and poked them in the genitals.  One girl reported that Brianna mooned a resident up close, sticking her bare butt in the resident’s face, and that Ashton rubbed resident’s genitals in an attempt to get them sexually aroused.  Okay, again… say what?  Come on, now.  And this went on for months without anyone saying a word until some kid got fired for cussing?  Something was clearly very wrong at the Good Samaritan, y’all.

Brianna Broitzman is charged with three counts of assault in the fifth degree of a caregiver to a vulnerable adult, three counts of criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult, three counts of criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult with sexual contact, one instance of disorderly conduct by a caregiver, and one instance of mandated reporter failure to report.  For that, she faces some $22,000 in fines, or a year in prison for each count.

Ashton Larson is charged with two counts of assault in the fifth degree of a caregiver to a vulnerable adult, one count of criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult, four counts of criminal abuse of a vulnerable adult with sexual contact, two counts of disorderly conduct by a caregiver and one count of mandated reporter failure to report.  She’s looking at $28,000 in fines, or a year in prison on each count.

Here’s the thing, though.  Already prosecutors are saying that it’s unlikely the girls will do any jail time at all.   Freeborn County Attorney Craig Nelson says that Brianna and Ashton “most likely will face suspended jail sentences and probation, so they’d have the threat of jail hanging over them if they get in more trouble.”  Oh, well.  That’ll teach ‘em to behave, Mr. Nelson.  Really?

Volusia County, FL – I know there are seniors out there who would be elated if one of their children encouraged them to leave the confines of a nursing facility in favor of independent living, especially if said child ensured that their every need is met. However, I don’t think Mary Bosket was truly interested in her 84-year-old mother’s needs when she removed her from the elder care facility. After all, she left the woman alone with 66 cats, 20 ducks, 15 turkeys, one dog, no heat, stopped-up toilet and sinks, and a faulty oxygen machine. Way to take care of Mom, Mary!

Authorities went to the New Smyrna Beach mobile home early Thanksgiving morning after representatives with the Department of Children and Families (DCF) were unable to contact the 84-year-old Mary Phillips. They found the floors covered in animal feces and the air suffused with the smell of ammonia. One room contained caged turkeys (and one loose one); another was the home of ducks and an empty child’s pool. The lone dog had a room he shared with piles of his own feces, and there were two cat corpses in the freezer. Yeah, all the makings for an awesome Thanksgiving Day!

Phillips, who suffers from congestive heart failure, told authorities that she lived alone at the home, although her daughter stopped by “occasionally” to help with the animals. When asked what she did without heat, she admitted that she covered herself with cats to stay warm.

Authorities called Bosket, and when she arrived at the home, she claimed she spent some time staying with her boyfriend and some time living with her mother. Riiiight. She had no explanation for the condition of the home. The cops arrested her, charged her with neglect of the elderly, and are holding her in a livestock pen with 12 pigs being treated for explosive diarrhea.

(Okay, that last bit isn’t true, but I can dream, right?)

The animals–including the geese, chickens, and ducks living in the yard–were taken to the Halifax Humane Society. A neighbor has expressed interest in adopting some of them.

As for Mary Phillips, DCF has taken over her care. Wherever you are, Ms. Phillips, I hope those around you help you have a wonderful, comfortable, and warm holiday season.

And that your daughter checks her stocking on Christmas morning and finds 12 pigs with explosive diarrhea.
