Moscow – I was gonna post this earlier, but was waiting on more information. Captain-Lieutenant Nikolai Zakharkin, 31, suspected his common-law wife, Irina Lapuzina, 27, was cheating on him when she did not return home one night. So after drinking heavily, he sent her a chilling text message stating, “You can say goodbye” to her 8-year-old twin daughters, Dasha and Katya. He then threw both of them off of their eight-story balcony. Unbelievably, both girls survived because of the trees they fell through and not landing on pavement but as you can imagine, they both got pretty tore up. Katya, who was asleep when she was tossed, suffered a ruptured spleen. Dasha suffered serious concussion, five broken ribs, a ruptured liver and a possible backbone injury. Zakharkin has been arrested and charged with attempted murder. Wishing the girls a quick recovery and wanted to note that I love Russian names. The female names usually sound like sexy spies and the males always sound like videogame villains.

GERMANTOWN, Wisconsin - 37-year-old Charles Avey, Sr. walked into the sheriff’s department admitting that he had strangled his 14-year-old step-son to death. He was not lying. Police found Cody Reetz dead in a minivan parked in a Wal-mart parking lot. The motive? He was mad at his wife and wanted her to suffer like he says she has made him suffer. Police feel Avery’s actions were in response to domestic abuse charges his wife had filed on him stemming from a hammer attack. Court records show Avery has five felony counts pending against him, has a history of writing bad checks and a former wife filed a restraining order against him. Germantown police are recommending a first-degree intentional homicide charge and state the killing was premeditated. The sad thing about these types of stories is that Avery will get exactly what he wanted. If I were the mother of Cody, or the biological father, I would be technically insane at this point.

Mendota, California - Very little information on this one, but here’s what I got. Alex Christopher Mercado, 4, was reported missing last Friday evening. Alex had been left in the care of an older sibling when he disappeared. About 24 hours after little Alex vanished, his body was found stuffed in the clothes dryer of a neighbor’s home. The body had been placed in the dryer after he was killed. Though police aren’t releasing the cause or manner of death, it is being reported that a 14-year-old boy has been taken into custody and charged with murder. We will update this story as more information is made available.

Cleveland, OH - Arshon Baker, 5, was born behind bars and his life pretty much went downhill from there. His mother, 24-year-old Angel Glass, was serving a three year stint in prison on a felonious assault charge when she gave birth to Arshon. For five years, she beat the child. When Arshon was admitted to the hospital in full cardiac arrest last Friday, medical personnel noted that the child was covered in cuts, burns, and bruises from his head to the bottom of his feet – some old, some new, some scars suspiciously shaped like an extension cord. For five years that child suffered hell, pain, and tears at the hands of his mother. Well, Angel put a end to all that suffering and misery. She killed him.

Angel stated to officers that she was in her apartment, doing another woman’s hair, when Arshon pulled on her dress to get her attention. She ordered him to stand in the corner. When the pesky little kid dared to leave the corner before being told, Angel beat the boy’s hands with a hairbrush. That didn’t satisfy the bitch, so she grabbed a braided belt and started beating on him with that. The boy tried to get away and got beat even harder. When Arshon tried to escape the beating a second time, Angel grabbed him by the leg causing him to fall and hit his head on a table. His eyes rolled back into his head and he went limp. The Mother-of-the-fucking-year then tried to revive the child by pouring water on his head. So much for her mad CPR skills.

On another note, I’d like to know what the hell the other woman in the apartment, the one getting her hair did, was doing when all this shit was going on around her. Oh, I know what she was doing…absofuckinglutely nothing! The police have also mentioned that a neighbor of Angel’s went to her apartment after the beating and said, “I told you not to beat that boy like that.” OMFG. I can’t believe I just typed that out. It’s painfully obvious that nobody ever bothered to pick up the phone and alert authorities to the abuse the heinous bitch was inflicting. Angel’s two surviving children, ages 1 and 7, are staying with relatives.

Angel is back behind bars, where she rightfully belongs. (Ok, not really. She rightfully belongs about 6 feet under the jail). She is being held on suspicion of felonious assault pending completion of the investigation. Good going, Angel! That pesky little brat will never bother you again. Vicious bitch…

Cartwright, Oklahoma – Not a lot of details on this but enough to raise some questions. 11-year-old Dakota Cheyenne Hughes was spending the weekend at her Aunt’s house who lives next door. Reports state that she was up late watching movies with 34-year-old Jason Lee Belew — an acquaintance of one of Dakota’s relatives and a man she had known for about a month. At around 4 a.m. the Aunt woke up and found Dakota dead in a back bedroom and Jason was nowhere to be found. Authorities arrested Belew on a criminal mischief warrant on Sunday then officially charged with 1st degree murder.

The medical examiner reported that there were signs of trauma, but the cause of death has not been released. But that’s the last of my questions at this point. I, like others, would like to know what the fuck this girl was doing watching movies with a 34-year-old man and why other family members thought this was ok? I’m not saying that all 34-year-old men are waiting to murder an 11-year-old whenever the opportunity presents itself, but that is just odd. If I had an 11-year-old daughter, I am pretty sure I would not allow her to watch movies late at night alone with another 11-year-old boy – much less a grown man.

“She had a friend that came over and watched movies with her,” her father Bill Hughes said. Hughes said he didn’t know Belew personally. I try not to be biased, as little kids die all the time, regardless of the economic class they are brought up in. But I will admit that as soon as I saw the images of the home, my question of “what kind of family would allow a little girl to stay up and watch movies with a man in his thirties” was answered with “Oh, yeah. OK.” Not trying to blame anyone here aside from the person responsible for actually murdering Dakota, but unless Jason was a really, really close friend of the family anyone else feel like some very poor judgment contributed to this tragedy as well?

Guess we will find out as more details are made available.

Update – more information coming out. We got some anonymous information that I will not put up at the moment, but it didn’t paint anyone around Dakota in a good light. Like I stated in the comments, it reminded me of Rowan Ford. Not in the murder, even though both are heinous, but also in their environments. It is being reported that Dakota went with her aunt to pick up Jason, and when they got back Jason and Dakota’s aunt began drinking beer and malt liqour.

The aunt got dizzy and went to bed, leaving Dakota alone with Belew. When she woke up from passing out, she found the naked body of Dakota on the floor of another bedroom and Belew was gone. We have read reports of Dakota being sexually assaulted, strangled and beaten with a bat, but none of that is official – however, it was reported that when Belew was picked up he had blood on his clothing. I’ll keep updating as more information comes out, and enjoy looking at the cocksucker’s mugshot.

Learning that the aunt left Dakota alone with a drunk man that she had only known for a month is really, really starting to grate on my nerves. To imagine what her last moments were like while her aunt snored away in a drunken stupor mere feet away from where she was being murdered. Stories like this makes me wish I was a Christian so I could also drink the Kool-Aid and be comforted by the fact that Dakota was in a better place and that a God had a reason for letting a drunken piece of shit rape and murder a defenseless 11-year-old.

Kissimmee, FL – The guy you see before you, with the bad-ass stripey-head ‘do, is 19-year-old Jonathan Alicea. Much like many of the men we feature here on the Dreamin’ Demon, Jonathan has a girlfriend with a couple of rugrats. And, much like many of the women we feature here, that girlfriend trusted her man with the lives of her children while she went about earning a living. And, like many of the stories we feature here, it doesn’t end well. Jonathan was playing Mr. Mom on Sunday and whipped up some dinner for the kiddos, ages 2 and 6. The 2-year-old may not have been extremely thrilled with Jonathan’s culinary skills and refused to eat. (Dinner was hot dogs and scrambled eggs – doesn’t sound very appetizing to me either). Jonathan was displeased. Already angry at the child’s refusal to eat, his temper boiled over when the kid peed his pants. What Jonathan did next both angers and baffles.

Jonathan ordered the child to change his clothes. When the little boy didn’t, couldn’t, or wouldn’t do it fast enough to please the big bad Jonathan, he got knocked into next week. Jonathan told detectives that he pushed the kid’s head, knocking him to the ground and causing him to lose consciousness. Now Jonathan had an unresponsive child on his hands – what to do? He came up with a brilliant fucking plan! He put the kid into an empty dresser drawer and began CPR. When that didn’t work, he boiled a pot of water and poured it over the child in an attempt to revive him. Wait…what? My handy-dandy CPR pamphlet must be broken because I don’t see ‘boiling water‘ listed anywhere in the illustrations. Great – now he has an unresponsive, burned, blistered, and soggy child crammed into a dresser drawer – you would think the next item on his to-do list would be to call 911. Right? Ha! He waited another 30 minutes, until the child’s mother got home from work, before anything was done for the boy. Why? Because “his cell phone is disconnected and he does not like to depend on neighbors for anything.” I sincerely hope someone leaves a rusty blade in the fucker’s cell – or a sheet already fashioned into a noose.

The child, covered in burns, died Monday morning. The child’s 6-year-old sibling has been removed from the home for the time being. DCF officials state that they have had no prior involvement with the children, but “will be looking for any type of abuse history to secure and ensure the safety of the sibling.”

Jonathan Alicea showed no remorse during his interview with police. Officers noted that his left hand, the hand he allegedly used to push the child, was swollen. He is now being held on charges of first-degree murder. His priors include two sexually-related arrests involving a child between 12 and 15 years old. Oh, and congrats, Jonathan!! You get credit for committing the first homicide in Kissimmee all year! You little go-getter, you! C’mere, let me give you your prize. Asshole.

Pulaski, VA – I’m looking at that fabulous mugshot and all I can think is “Boo-fucking-hoo bitch, cry me a river.”  Lisa Hylton, has plenty of reason to turn on the waterworks, but I am not sure which one she is actually using.  Could one of them be the fact that her 3 year old son has died or could it be because she has been arrested for his murder? Some time Tuesday, Hylton left her drug stash out where a curious toddler could get a hold of it.  The 3 year old boy ingested some of the drug and while Hylton was aware of this, she chose not to seek medical attention for him for approximately 14 hours.  I guess when the boy stopped breathing, she thought it would be  a pretty good idea to call 911.  Unfortunately, the kid did not make it and was pronounced dead at 5:30 AM Wednesday morning.  Several hours later, Hylton was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and felony child neglect. Reports indicate the drug the child swallowed was a Schedule II controlled substance which include OxyContin, cocaine and methamphetamine.  I’m placing my bets on meth or crack.  Who’s with me?

Casselberry, FL – Nioshka Bello is considered by neighbors to be an excellent and doting mother. That’s weird, because based on the fact that her mugshot and story are being featured here on the Dreamin’ Demon, you gotta figure that the chick is lacking in the most basic of parenting skills. Nioshka used to have a 2-year-old daughter named Janessa Sandoval, who, according to neighbors, was very well kept, doted upon, and happy. That happy little girl is dead – her mommy strangled her with a bra. Yes, Nioshka managed to rid this earth of one more toddler, but failed miserably when it came to taking her own life.

Nioshka later admitted to strangling the toddler with a bra and her own hands, but failed to explain why. She also failed to explain why it took 12 whole hours to report the child’s death to anyone. According to the arrest affidavit, after calling 911 to report the death of her child, Nioshka attempted to take her own life by downing 20 Benadryl tablets and some Tylenol. Nioshka was sent to the hospital in critical condition – Janessa was sent to the coroner.

Responding officers noted that Nioshka seemed to be detached and disinterested in the condition of her daughter. Neighbors, however, say that when she was taken from the apartment, she looked distraught. Neighbors think Nioshka OD’d because she was upset and not because she did anything wrong. Well of course she’s upset! She just ruined a perfectly good piece of lingerie with a toddler’s throat. Duh…

According to Nioshka’s mother, she has a history of (obviously failed) suicide attempts – the last time she tried to off herself was in high school. (You would think that after 2 or 3 tries you would be able to succeed). Instead of opting for 20 Benadryl tablets and some Tylenol, Nioshka should have opted to go the same route she chose for her daughter – death by bra. Or better yet, death by speeding semi-truck.

Dallas, TX – Most of us have been through it.  The end of a serious relationship or marriage.  You know, things didn’t work out and its time to cut your losses and split.  Some of us don’t part ways on good terms.  You know how it can be, your every waking minute is consumed with thoughts of revenge, plotting and scheming on how you can make them pay.  Wondering which cables belong to the brakes and exactly how much damage a brick to the back of the skull will actually cause.  Pondering exactly how tamper proof those pesky tamper proof seals are, and googling their drive from home to work every day.  You’ll show him that you don’t take these things lightly.  Besides, his taste in music and movies suck and he was lucky you ever gave him the time of day… Wait, what was I talking about?  Oh yeah, bad break-ups and thoughts of revenge.  Point is, we never do it.  As much as we want them to hurt, we once loved them and those pesky good memories always get in the way. Right?  Well, not for every one.  When Gary Green found out that his wife, Lovetta Armstead was seeking  divorce, he decided everyone had to die, including her innocent children.

Green and Armstead had been in a relationship and living together for 2 years.  She had three children from previous relationships, 12 and 9 year old boys and a 6 year old girl, Jazzman Montgomery.  they had recently married in June, but Armstead was not happy for one reason or another and decided to file for divorce.  Green’s MySpace has him listed as married and includes a slide show almost entirely made up of pictures of him and Armstead.  Armstead’s MySpace, which she logged into the day she died however, has herself listed as Single and other than Green being her #1 friend, has no signs of him anywhere else. Yeah, if my significant other lists themselves as single, you can pretty much take it that I am considering myself dumped.

Monday evening, Armstead dropped the two boys off at church and returned home with Jazzmen.  Green, who had a criminal past, thought he had moved out, convinced her to allow him to get back into the house because his parole officer was going to check on him.  When she arrived home that evening, Armstead found Green waiting for her.  Green attacked her and stabbed her to death and then went after the tiny 6 year old.  The thought of that baby watching her mother die and then having this huge psycho fuck come after her is heart wrenching.  The thought of the fear she must have felt is almost too much for me to bear.  Needless to say, Jazzmen was no match for the monster and was also stabbed to death.

After he was done at the house, he went to the church and picked up the two boys.  Once he got them into the house, he told the 12 year old to take a shower, more than likely to get him out of the way.  It isn’t unfair to assume that this cowardly bastard thought the 12 year old might be a threat.  Green then proceeded to attack the 9 year old, stabbing him in the stomach.  At some point, the 12 year old came back onto the scene, Green forced them into a back room to look at the dead bodies of ther mother and sister.   They were somehow able to convince him not to kill them.  Even though the 9 year old was seriously injured, the 12 year old did not suffer any physical harm.  When Green left, the 12 year old ran next door for help.

After fleeing the scene, in true pussy fashion, Green attempted to overdose and kill himself.  He didn’t try hard enough though, the asshole is still alive.  What a fuck up.  He called his mother and she convinced him to turn himself in.

Green has been charged with capital murder, with other charges pending and is being held on a $1 million bond.  Let him rot.

Long Beach, California I am not a believer in the “after life” but in case I am totally wrong, I sure hope Neely Dinkins burns in hell soon. He is charged with hitting two toddlers while driving drunk. He drug them both for a block before one of the children, a 2-year-old boy, became dislodged. His 1-year-old sister was not so lucky. She remained lodged in the wheel well of his SUV – still in the wagon she had been sitting in – where she remained even after Dinkins parked his vehicle at his home a mile away. Where he ran inside like a cowardly bitch.

Friday evening these two children, a little 2 year-old boy and his 1 year-old sister, were being pulled in their red wagon by their parents. Using crosswalks are suppose to be fairly safe, no? I mean, cross with caution still, but lights are in your favor, all is good until some drunken form of evil smashes your life forever. I cannot even summon up words to describe the accused. Nothing seems appropriate.

After (allegedly) hitting them, the two children and their wagon became entwined with Dinkin’s SUV. After about a block he stopped, backed his vehicle up a bit and dislodged the 2 year-old boy and part of the wagon. Unfortunately for his 1 year-old sister, it would be another mile before her little body would be discovered in the wheel well.

The witnesses were screaming in total disbelief. Screaming for him to stop. As Dinkins passed another motorist, the child was described as looking like a rag doll…and he was being followed by one witness in another vehicle. Dinkins pulled into his driveway and according to a neighbor, claimed he said, “I think I hit a baby” as he ran through his front door. The neighbor verified the fact this fucker wasn’t lying by walking over to the SUV and seeing the little girl dressed in blue stuck up in there.

Neely Dinkins appeared for his arraignment and officials responsible for transfering him from the jail to the courthouse state he was downright indignant. He was very unapologetic and angry – the two things that haven’t changed since his arrest Friday evening.

Dinkins is no stranger to the legal system. Although his prior arrests have not had to do with previous DUI’s, one of the terms of his probation for drugs was that he abstain from any mood altering substances. (Drugs and/or alcohol) Police state Dinkins’ blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit.

The 2 year-old little boy is alive.

33 year-old Neely Dinkins has been charged with second-degree murder, driving under the influence causing injury and/or death, driving under the influence, hit-and-run causing injury and/or death, and driving on a suspended license. His bail was raised from $100,000 to $1.3 million.

I wish there were less human rights organizations who might be apt to stop the torture of this fucker. After reading this story, no matter what your stance on the death penalty is, I’m fairly confident you are as sickened as I and wish there were some form of justice that would inflict as much pain as Neely has.

Brooksville, FL – David McBurnett looks lonely. Look at that smug mug, sitting there all by itself. You know what that mugshot needs? A partner. Yes, David’s girlfriend, Breanna Underwood, should have her worthless turd mug sitting right next to his – for she is just as guilty as David in the death of her 1-year-old son, Hunter Morris. Beginning in the month of March, and all the way up until last Thursday, she did absofuckinlutely nothing to protect her toddler from her current swinging dick, David McBurnett. After having suffered months of abuse, Hunter Morris was hospitalized on Friday with numerous injuries – including fractured ribs, internal bleeding, and multiple contusions – and was declared brain dead. The little dude gave up the fight for good on Saturday.

This entire story is so full of fucking fail, it makes me sick to my stomach. David, 19 and unemployed, was mooching residing with Breanna at her mother’s home. Hunter stressed poor David out with his crying. If the asshole was so bothered by the sound of a child crying, then maybe he shouldn’t be shacking up with a woman with a child – but, that’s just my opinion, right? Anyway, Breanna made a statement to police that she has witnessed David beating her child on numerous occasions. She saw the dick hit Hunter’s hands and feet with a remote control and a shoe numerous times. Breanna saw David use an open hand or his fists to hit Hunter in the head and body more than once. Breanna also witnessed David grab the child by his face and squeeze it. Yes, for several months, beginning when Hunter was just 6 months old, Breanna watched her boyfriend beat the child. Why then, do I not have Breanna’s mugshot to add to this story? And where the hell was the child’s grandmother when all this shit was going on?

David, big tough guy that he is, admitted to each instance of abuse. He told investigators he beat the child so “he would stop crying.” Well, you did it, David. You really shut that little kid up. And what a fucking accomplishment – not everyone can take out a toddler – those little fuckers are pretty tough. The asshole remains behind bars on a no bond status. When asked whether Breanna would be facing any charges, a police spokesperson stated that the investigation was ongoing. I honestly don’t see what there is to investigate. Lock the bitch up right alongside the asshole…

Hookstown, PA - Wyatt Smitsky, 4, was reported missing at 7:30 Friday evening – he was last seen playing in the yard with his sisters, ages 3 and 6, around 6:30 that evening. It was believed that Wyatt had simply wandered away from home and got lost. Authorities were especially concerned when it was revealed that Wyatt suffered from an congenital heart defect and required medication. Authorities, family, friends, and neighbors searched for Wyatt until 4 a.m. – coming up empty. The search started anew at 11:00 Saturday morning, but was called off a little less than two hours later. Wyatt had been found – face down in a septic tank filled with solid waste. And authorities don’t believe Wyatt accidentally made his way into the tank. The lid on the tank, which is similar to a manhole cover, was way too heavy for Wyatt to maneuver on his own. Besides that, the heavy lid had been moved back into place after the child was placed in the tank. Curious…

Investigators started smelling bullshit early on – shit just wasn’t adding up and stories from family members about events surrounding his disappearance were conflicting. Investigators aren’t saying what led them to search the tank, but a haz-mat crew was called in early Saturday morning to drain the tank and there he was. Investigators believe Wyatt’s body had been there since Friday evening when the missing person report was filed, or even earlier. They are not releasing any information about possible injuries or cause of death pending autopsy, but they have classified the death a homicide. The septic tank was about 50 yards away from where Wyatt was last seen playing.

Wyatt’s parents, 28-year-old Terri Smitsky, and John Smitsky Jr., 29, were taken to the station for questioning. Terri’s interrogation must have been quick and to the point -  she was released shortly after being taken in. John, however, was questioned for about five hours. He left the station with an attorney at his side. “As far as he’s concerned, it was an accident,” John’s attorney, Joseph Horowitz said. “He’s overwhelmed. As you imagine, he says he had nothing to do with it, and he’s been in custody, and his son died. It’s a terrible day for him.” Horowitz also mentioned that John hasn’t been charged as of yet. Police have not charged anyone *coughJohnJrcough* with the murder of Wyatt Smitsky, but do believe an arrest is imminent. As always, we’ll get this story updated as new information is released. I have some tolerance but I couldn’t be further from understanding the love and devotion shown to someone who had just killed my child.

But Susan Witbracht “adored” her boyfriend Dauntorian Sanders. Even now when the autopsy results are out and others are planning the funeral of her 3 year-old girl and her ass sits in jail. She adored him so much she allegedly joined in the fun of beating her child, but according to her, she did not participate on the day that child’s body gave out. What’s a poor skank to do? I mean, you can tell him to stop but he just won’t listen. Shrug it off girl. Those men will do what they want to do. It’s your job to lurve him.

She did nothing to stop her man. Did nothing to protect this little 3 year-old girl from a 23 year-old prick who liked to swing a nylon belt with the buckle into the soft flesh of a child. Is that kind of thing a turn on for some females…the bold and brazen display of power over another human being or animal? Do these chicks just thank god this abuse isn’t directed their way so their party mood isn’t interrupted? I really don’t get it.

A 911 call was placed by Dauntorian when the child was unresponsive. “Yes, my [expletive] child isn’t breathing right now.” Really? Wonder if it had to do with the visible areas on her legs, arms, torso and head that matched the heavy belt buckle? And despite being rushed to the hospital, the injuries were too much for this child to fight any longer. I’d give up too.

Both Dauntorian Sanders (23) and his girlfriend Susan Witbracht (26) have been arrested and booked on suspicion of first-degree murder and child abuse.

St. Charles, Missouri - Evan Hassan Wormley, aka EV THA TV, had a bad morning yesterday.   So did his two-year-old son, Ev Junior.  So did Random Casino Bystander Guy, who was just trying to scratch a gambling itch at a St. Louis-area casino.  At 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, aspiring hip-hop artist Wormley, 21, showed up at the Ameristar casino in St. Charles.  That’s not weird, right?  People gamble at all hours.  But Ev was (a) drunk, and (b) had his kid with him, and the baby was wearing nothing but a dirty diaper.  That probably should have been Sign #1 that things weren’t going to go well for either Evan. 

Wormley headed straight for the elevators, where he figured a casino was as good a place as any for a little shakedown.  Mr. Random Bystander Guy, who is in his seventies, was either up really late or really early.  He and his daughter were standing near the elevators when Wormley approached and began to demand some gamblin’ money.  The man resisted, so Wormley thought he’d put a little hurt on, which is kind of hard to do with a stinky-diapered toddler on your hip, I guess.  So Wormley dropped his son and proceeded to the attempted beatdown part of EV’s Very Bad Judgement Call.

The little boy fell onto an industrial floor cleaner and was hurt during the scuffle, which sent Random Bystander Guy into a wall.   Here’s the part where you think “well, Ev made a bad decision, picked up his kid, and left,” right?  Shyeah, whatever.  This is the Demon, kids.  Wormley, ever the asshat, took off running, leaving both his son and his assault victim in the lobby of the casino.  Security and police caught up with Ev in the casino parking lot, because St. Louis cops run really fast or else Evan was too drunk to find his car.

Evan Junior and Random Bystander Guy were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and released.  Evan Junior is now in the legal custody of his grandmother.  Evan Junior’s mother, Rosheeta Carter, was apparently not involved in the incident, so I dunno where she is or why she didn’t get her baby – maybe it had something to do with the baby being at a casino with his drunken father.

Evan Hassan Wormley is being held on a class C felony child endangerment charge at the St. Charles Jail, where he posed for the hawt-or-not topless mugshot above.  His bail has been set at $15,000 cash with no ten-percent option, and prosecutors say more charges may be forthcoming.

Cheyenne, WY – Southeast Wyoming is hell. It’s a gray, desolate, nightmarish wasteland full of howling wind and the ugliest, most desperate shrubbery in the world. When the wind isn’t sucking all rational thought from your skull like a passenger jet with the windows blown out, I’m almost certain that it actually rains road kill. It’s the least populous state in the nation, which means most people have chosen slightly lesser hells like Bakersfield, CA, or even Delaware. Stop and ask a local why the fuck you just saw a sign with a picture of a rabbit with antlers growing out of it’s head. They jokingly call this taxidermy-for-tourism‘s-sake a “jackalope”, but I call it mutilating at least two corpses. It is a place that warps the mind, sickens the soul and ruthlessly chaps the lips of any who dare enter it. That’s why whenever some horrible, bloody tale makes it’s way from those barren hills and into the news, I can’t say I’m all that surprised. Even when Joy Hofer shot her husband, strangled their son and killed herself. Did I mention all the road kill?

The Hofers lived in the city of Cheyenne, known as “the Magic City of the Plains”. The town was really just a few square miles of filthy shanties, whorehouses and rodeo halls until the U.S. Air Force purchased the land from the dinosaurs in 1865 – but what is this, City Confidential? Like I said, the ironically named Joy Hofer evidently shot her husband Kelly Hofer before strangling their two year old son, Gunnar. According to autopsy results, the little boy had lidocaine on his face and in his bloodstream, as if the mother had somehow attempted to numb or anesthetize him prior to strangulation. Joy then killed herself, in a manner yet to be revealed. The bodies were found on July 25. No motive, no note, nothing. Laramie County Coroner Marty Luna was likewise baffled when he told the press “And that’s part of what I’m continuing in my investigation: that there has to be some other aspect as to why this occurred,”. Some other aspect. A secret love affair? A pending divorce? Spousal abuse? Or was it simply residence in the twenty two square mile Amityville Horror that is Cheyenne, WY? We did touch on the heaps and heaps of road kill, right?

The sad truth of the matter is that shit like this seems to happen every day in communities all over America, in both rural and urban areas. Places without high winds or “jackalopes”. I’m just poking back at Wyoming for all those long drives through the state up to Montana. I guess it’s not that bad, certainly not bad enough to make someone commit murder. It’s not only an ignorant, silly notion, but it shifts blame away from the actual killer; in this case, Joy Hofer. Southeast Wyoming isn’t some black nexus of harsh realities, road kill and bad taxidermy – it’s just a place like any other. These tragedies are usually born of the soul, not the soil. Frank Readick, voice of the Shadow in the old days of radio drama used to ask: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows…”. Of course he did. Frank was from Philadelphia – don’t get me started on that horrible little shit-hole…
