Owasso, OK - Police were called to the home of Garold and Sherry McMillian over the weekend after neighbors reported seeing the couple’s two adopted teens standing outside in the cold, wet, drizzle. When the children were found at 11:00 Saturday evening,  temps were reported to be in the low 50’s – a 14-year-old girl was found shivering and shoeless, her 15-year-old brother was trying to keep warm and dry in an open air fort in the backyard. Police learned the children were asked to leave the home at about 4:00 that afternoon, when their asstastic parents took their two bio-children out for dinner and a movie. The house was locked up tight and the teen girl told officers that this was a regular occurrence. Officers noted the couple’s pet had access to food, water, and a warm environment, but their non-bio kids were left to soak and starve in the rain for 5-6 hours. Nice.

The McMillians returned to the home about 20 minutes after being contacted by police. Garold stated to officers that he and his wife were experiencing disciplinary difficulties with their adopted kiddos and “needed to get away and get some time and space.” So, they loaded up their other kids and headed off to the warmth and comfort of a friend’s home to indulge in a little R & R. Garold admitted to leaving the kids without food, water, warmth, and access to the home – but, he didn’t see anything wrong with it – hell, according to Garold, it’s the same as leaving them outside to watch a football game or the movies, right? When questioned, Sherry told officers that the kids would often take kitchen knives and attempt to harm themselves if they were left alone in the house, so she opted to lock them out. Yeah, because that is way safer. Good thinking – crazy fuckers. Seems the adopted kids spent quite a bit of time locked out – neither was allowed a key to the home and had to sit outside and wait for Garold and Sherry to get home after school. Authorities also noted that the McMillian’s home was less than 250 feet from the home of a known, habitual registered sex offender.

Garold and Sherry, both 42, were arrested and charged with two felony counts of child abuse – both have already made bail and have been released. All of the children, biological and adopted, have been removed from the home and placed elsewhere. Now, I got a couple of questions. Why didn’t the kids feel safe enough to seek shelter elsewhere? And, if they neighbors watched these kids sit out in the freezing rain for hours and hours, why the hell didn’t they open their damn door to the kids? What the hell is wrong with these people?

“Faith healing.” A goddamn oxymoron, if you ask me. Over the last couple of decades, it is estimated that hundreds of children have met their demise due to such practices. Despite this, as many as 30 states have legislation exempting parents who neglect their children by failing to seek medical treatment for them on religious grounds. This legislation, much of which was instituted back in the 1970s, has been tested in recent years, resulting in a handful of states repealing the laws and others yet scaling it back in cases of criminal mistreatment and manslaughter. But these are empty gestures if recent sentencing in faith healing cases is any measure.

Take the case of Leilani and Dale Neumann, for example. The Neumanns were associated with the Unleavened Bread Ministries, an organization that advocates (but does not restrict their members to) faith healing. In 2008, the Neumanns allowed their 11 year old daughter, Madeline Kara Neumann, to die from treatable diabetes. Their sentence? Six months in jail to be served one month a year and 10 years of probation. They were allowed to maintain custody of their other children despite bold statements that they were unapologetic about their handling of their daughter’s illness.

Juxtapose this with the case of Elizabeth Dawn Thornton and Christopher Steven Washburn. Their 22-month old son died after his parents neglected to seek immediate treatment after the toddler fell and hit his head. A clearly remorseful couple, Thornton and Washburn agreed to terminate their parental rights to the other children and were sentenced to three to fifteen years in prison – a sentence much more appropriate for a couple who negligently stood by while their child suffered and eventually died.

Although I am not pious, myself, I suppose I understand the struggle courts have experienced in dealing with faith healing. There is no federal statute mandating that parents seek medical treatment that conflicts with their religious beliefs, and courts are bound by the Constitution to maintain freedom of religion. But, to maintain this form of religious freedom, we will continue to pay with the corpses of children who relied upon their parents for life – and received nothing but prayer in return. Hardly seems worth it, if you ask me.

DADE CITY, Florida – Police pulled over a vehicle for not for not having a passenger side headlight. The driver was a very drunk Genoveva Amacenda-Velona, 30. Also in the car with her were two children ages 7 and 9. But that wasn’t it. Beside her was a half-empty bottle of Jose Cuervo and sliced limes on the console. Amacenda-Velona spoke no English, but did relay that she had only drank a few beers at a friends house. Her 0.233 blood-alcohol level told a much different story. She was charged with aggravated child neglect, DUI, not having a valid driver’s license and not having a motor vehicle registration and was being at the Land O’Lakes jail without bail. I see some people calling this setup a rolling bar just because she had some sliced limes? Shit, wait ’til they get a glimpse of the Mojito setup Jaded has in her car. Hell, she has fresh mint growing on the dashboard. Wanna know what my “rolling bar” consisted of? A couple bottles of Night Train. Don’t hate.

PENSACOLA, Florida – Christian Woods, 21, called cops to tell them her 18-month-old daughter was missing. The police followed all the leads she gave them, but were unable to find Myleahya. Investigators went to Woods’ home and found a deplorable conditions; the home had no electricity or running water and was infested with roaches. They also found Jaterius, 2, with a full diaper, bruised and severely malnourished. His sister, 18-month-old Mykayla, was found under a bed. She was also malnourished. As for her missing twin sister Myleahya – well she was found as well. Stuffed in the garbage can.

Woods fessed up at that point, explaining she left for Mobile on Saturday, leaving the three kids alone with nothing but Jello to eat. When she returned on Monday, she found Myleahya dead. That’s when she stuck her in the garbage can and called police with the false report. Woods was arrested and charged two counts of aggravated child abuse, and one count of manslaughter. She’s being held at Escambia County Jail under no bond. Since I do not believe in a Hell, stories like this are tough because I do not feel this woman will ever really answer for her crimes the way I feel she should.

Carson City, Nevada – Authorities in Carson City were alerted to a case of possible child abuse by the VA Hospital in Reno on Saturday -  personnel there suggested that police get in contact with one Robert Williams. Robert had been in the hospital the day before with a couple of young boys who “looked pretty beat up.” When officers made contact with Robert, they discovered two boys being kept locked inside a small bedroom. “Inside the bedroom was a bunk bed where two small boys were lying,” the officer wrote. “The boys, age 5 and 3, were lying on the top bunk bed sharing a blanket. Located on the floor were two toddler potty chairs which were full of urine. The windows to the bedroom were boarded up from the inside.” The 5-year-old was reluctant to come out from underneath the blanket, and the 3-year-old wouldn’t wake up. The older boy was allegedly sportin’ a couple of black eyes. The younger had “a large abrasion – covering the majority of his face,” similar to road rash. What happened to the lads, you ask? Their parents.

The officer noticed a few other things that just seemed wrong. First, there was not a single toy to be found in the trailer. Second, the refrigerator door was secured with a cord, making it impossible for the boys to open. Third, there was a small, well-groomed and apparently well cared for, dog wandering around inside the trailer. Robert, 47, was arrested right then and there. Officers later made contact with the children’s mother, Linda Williams, at her place of employment. (Would you believe she’s employed as a caregiver? Ha!)  She allegedly told officers that her husband always locks the children in their room while she’s at work. But, hey, she lets ‘em out when she gets home. When asked about the injury to her younger child’s face, Linda, 35, stated that she had taken a washcloth to the boy’s face on Thursday to remove white-out from his skin. The child, though, told doctors that his mother had scrubbed his face with, of all things, a Brillo pad. Nice. I won’t even use that shit on my bathtub because of the damage it causes. Bitch. Authorities learned that neither child has had any medical care for at least three years. It was Linda’s turn to be arrested.

Officers returned to the trailer on Wednesday in an effort to collect evidence against the Williams’. When they entered, they discovered the place had been cleaned up a bit and the boards had been removed from the windows. Neighbors told officers that the couple’s relatives had been in and were seen carrying bags of garbage out. Meh. No matter, photos of the inside of the trailer were taken at the time of arrest. The door, along with the sliding bolt lock, was taken off the hinges and tagged as evidence. So much for the relatives getting the asshats off the hook. Robert Williams is being held on suspicion of of felony child abuse with substantial bodily harm, false imprisonment, and two counts of gross misdemeanor child neglect, abuse and endangerment. Linda Williams was booked on suspicion of felony child abuse with substantial bodily harm, principal to false imprisonment, and two counts of gross misdemeanor child neglect, abuse and endangerment. Bail has been set at $100,000. Both boys have been taken into custody by DCFS.

Pompano Beach, FL - Susan Grace was out and about Wednesday at about 5:00 p.m., when she happened upon a rather alarming sight – walking on the side of the road, along the white line, were two little ones just barely out of the toddler stage – one of them dragging a pillow, both barefoot. “I started panicking and I rolled down the window and I’m yelling, ‘Stop, stop,’ and of course, they can’t hear. And traffic’s just whizzing by them,” said Susan, a preschool teacher. She pulled her car over to the side of the road and waited with the kids until law enforcement showed up on scene. Seems the kiddos were on their way to pick up their older sister from school. But, where was mommy? While officers were questioning the kids, ages 3 and 4, one of them let it slip that “Mommy is drunk.” Hehhh…my kiddos had quite the vocabulary at that age, but the word ‘drunk’ wasn’t part of it.

The children’s uncle happened to be driving by the now crowded shoulder and recognized the kiddos. He pulled over to speak with officers and told deputies where mommy lived. When officers arrived at the home they found mommy, 44-year-old Brenda Duclos, passed out cold behind the wheel of the family grocery getter – the engine running. On the seat beside her, four empty wine bottles. Yes, Brenda had been all set to pick her older child up from school when she passed the hell out. The kids, perhaps worried about their sibling getting home safely, climbed out of the mini-van and set out to pick her up themselves. By that time, the older child had already walked to her uncle’s house when it dawned on her that her parental unit wasn’t gonna show.

Brenda refused a breathalyzer at the scene. She told officers that she has a drinking problem (ya think?) and that she had been drinking wine for a good part of the day. But, she adamantly stated that she hadn’t been driving drunk. Um. Granted, she wasn’t actually driving, but sounds to me like she sure as shit planned on it at one point. Brenda’s husband, who had been working at the time, arrived to collect the children and had this to say: “She’s stupid. She did a stupid thing,” before driving off with the kids. He later changed his mind about the stupid part and praised her on her mad motherin’ skills. “I just want to let everyone know, my wife’s not a bad person that’s made out to be like that. She’s a great mom, a great wife. We’re struggling like everyone else has been.” Uh-huh. I was more inclined to agree with him when the word ’stupid’ came into play.

Brenda Duclos spent a day and a half behind bars before bonding out on $5,000. At her first court appearance on Thursday, Judge John Hurley read her the riot act. “Your children were found two miles away from you passed out in your driveway,” he said. “If that’s not a danger to your children, then I don’t know what is, ma’am, short of having a loaded gun with them.” It is reported that the judge also vowed to “personally call the Department of Children & Families to make sure officials were aware of how she endangered her children.” You go, judge! Brenda is being charged with DUI and child neglect. The state of Florida says cops can make an arrest on DUI charges in cases where a person suspected of being impaired is in physical control of a vehicle, even if they are just sitting behind the wheel with the keys in the ignition and/or the engine running.

Pulaski, VA – I’m looking at that fabulous mugshot and all I can think is “Boo-fucking-hoo bitch, cry me a river.”  Lisa Hylton, has plenty of reason to turn on the waterworks, but I am not sure which one she is actually using.  Could one of them be the fact that her 3 year old son has died or could it be because she has been arrested for his murder? Some time Tuesday, Hylton left her drug stash out where a curious toddler could get a hold of it.  The 3 year old boy ingested some of the drug and while Hylton was aware of this, she chose not to seek medical attention for him for approximately 14 hours.  I guess when the boy stopped breathing, she thought it would be  a pretty good idea to call 911.  Unfortunately, the kid did not make it and was pronounced dead at 5:30 AM Wednesday morning.  Several hours later, Hylton was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and felony child neglect. Reports indicate the drug the child swallowed was a Schedule II controlled substance which include OxyContin, cocaine and methamphetamine.  I’m placing my bets on meth or crack.  Who’s with me?

I was meaning to put this one up the other day and then completely forgot about it until someone made a comment about the new Alice in Chains album and I instantly thought of Man in a Box and then this story. A security guard at a National Guard facility was approached by a teen wearing nothing but over sized shorts held up with a belt. He was hungry, covered with scars and wanted directions to the nearest police station so he could report he was being abused by his mother. That turned out to be an understatement if the rest of his claims are true, as he also told investigators that since moving to Oklahoma City from New Jersey he had spent the majority of the last four years in locked bedroom closets.

The 14-year-old boy claimed that ever since his mother, 37-year-old LaRhonda Marie McCall, was released from prison four and a half years ago, he had been subjected to various forms of abuse on top of spending his life in the various closets of the apartments they moved into. He claimed that he had alcohol poured on him and set alight and that he was routinely tied up, hit with an extension cord and choked. Investigators have no reason to doubt his claims, especially since their are scars all over his body. “I personally have seen those photographs of the boy’s body, and he was subjected to a number of types of abuse,” police Sgt. Gary Knight said. “He was frequently locked in the closet for hours if not days at a time. He wasn’t allowed to leave, never attended school, never received medical attention.”

Seven other children lived with McCall, six of the minors were taken into custody of the Department of Human Services. None of them showed any signs of abuse. LaRhonda Marie McCall, 37, and a friend, Steve Vern Hamilton, 38, were arrested on 20 complaints each of child abuse and child neglect. Both remained jailed Tuesday on $400,000 bond.

St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana is perhaps a well known name now due to Hurricane Katrina. With the eye passing over the eastern portion of the parish pushing a 25 foot storm surge from the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, almost every single structure was a total loss. It was this storm surge that destroyed the parish levees and completely flooded this area. I’m sure the images are burned into everyone’s mind as they are mine. And the continued mess afterward. The dog eat dog survival techniques the residents have employed…the deplorable living conditions that continue even to this day. And so it should come as no surprise, the story of Daniel Ballard being a transient still…4 years later. But what sets this story apart is his 60 pound 14 year-old son who was discovered when authorities arrived to his RV to serve an eviction notice.

Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the Arizona mother of this 14 year-old sent him to the loving and caring arms of his father for a short visit. She claims she had no way to track his whereabouts, that his father would allow him periodic calls but they were always strictly monitored.

After the storm, Daniel and his son lived a less than stable lifestyle, never really having a permanent residence. They lived with one of Daniel’s girlfriends for a while, in an abandoned building, and for the past month, a used RV that also served as residence to six dogs and one cat. With no running water and the only electricity being available was to power an air conditioner, when officers showed up with the eviction notice, they quickly found why the owner of the RV park wanted him gone. But it was when they saw past the smell – well, things changed for Daniel.

His 14 year-old son, who hadn’t been to a doctor nor to school in four years (because daddy said his son didn’t want to and he was being home schooled *wink*) was found to be highly emaciated, had an old fracture in one of his arms that had set incorrectly, and a clear infection in one of his feet that left it swollen and dark as the child limped around. Oh, that and he weighed as much as a coon hound. 60 pounds. He’s 14. (the average weight for a 14 year-old male is around 125 pounds)

Until the mother can prove some sort of guardianship, her son will remain a ward of the state. He’s recuperating in a local hospital. His father, 30 year-old Daniel Ballard, has been charged with cruelty of a juvenile and is being held on $25,000 bail.

A glaring question:  If the mother only sent her son down for a short visit, why didn’t she alert authorities when he didn’t return?

St. Bernard, Ohio – Brooke Watts has been in a hell of a mess.   Unfortunately, Brooke’s kids were living in it with her.   Watts, 27, was arrested on Tuesday night after police officers found her and her three children, ages1, 4, and 7, living in filth.  Bonus, there were meth ingredients lying around.  Double plus bonus, the kids all had head lice and bugs were everywhere – even in the food in the refrigerator.  Well, that’ll put me right back on my diet.    Fortunately for the kids, a social worker did her job and alerted the cops after she showed up to visit the family and found that despite repeated warnings, the place was an unlivable nightmare of ewww.   I know, right?  A repeat visit, and the place still had masses of messes all up in it?  But of course, my darling denizens.  Because cleaning the house before Child Protective Services drops by just feels wrong, somehow, y’know?

Now here’s where it gets even more fun.  Brooke’s children’s grandmother lives in the apartment just upstairs from her grandchildren.   She told police that Brooke was a “drug addict” (no, really?) who couldn’t take care of her kids.  Whether Grandma was taking care of the kids in their mother’s drug-addled state, I don’t know – but it seems that she wasn’t, since police said that all the children had bedbug bites to go with their head lice, and it looked like they’d been eating  insect-infested donuts just that morning.  Oh.  Well.  That’s just lovely parenting, Brooke, you negligent tweaker.

CPS removed all three children on the grounds that their mother is just nasty.  Brooke Watts was arrested and taken to the Hamilton County Jail, where she is being held on $3,000 bond – a grand for each kid.  Sadly, Brooke’s not receiving visitors just now.  Her children have been taken into county custody, where they will be deloused, fed, and hopefully placed into a loving home where “meth” and “mess” are just two words that kind of sound alike.

Tampa, Florida – If I ever need a story of a dumbass mother, all I have to do is look to Florida. You guys sure have an abundance of idiot parenting. Case in point, Martine Lifluer. The 31-year-old mother drove to the Tampa International Airport with her 10-year-old son. She parked her vehicle in short-term parking and told him that she had to take a flight and for him to wait in the car for his grandmother. After 90 minutes of no one showing up, the kid finally got out and approached an airport employee. Turns out, the grandmother had no clue her daughter had taken a trip or that the boy was even there waiting for her.

Lifluer was arrested when she returned from her week long trip to Ft. Lauderdale. She admitted to leaving the boy in the car with no money or phone, and admitted to never informing anyone that the boy was even there. She has been charged with child neglect and sitting in jail on a $2,000 bond.

Lori Richards, 25, is here because she’s a shitty mother. While she’s hanging out at the dive bar looking for a john, her 8-month-old baby boy was sitting home alone – left unattended in a baby swing. Last Saturday evening, officers responded to a call about a woman standing outside a bar offering sexual services for a fee. I’m guessing no one was buying what she was selling – she was still standing out there when the cops arrived. She not only admitted to pimpin’ herself out, she tipped officers off to the fact that she may have left her baby home alone. Sure enough, the little guy was just hanging out in his baby swing. The infant was turned over to his grandparents and Lori was hauled off to the slammer. She’s looking at charges of child endangerment and soliciting. Hehh…soliciting. If that chick can make $120 a bop, then maybe I’m in the wrong business.

Jackson County, Florida Law enforcement officers contend with an awful lot while they’re on duty. As as we’ve witnessed on the Dreamin’ Demon, their job is far from easy. Domestic disputes have to be a certified mess as they sort out all the “he said, she said” bullshit and sort out who did what to whom first. It’s aggravating when they spend so much time trying to distinguish who’s telling the truth. I believe in time efficiency, if there’s a discrepancy in stories, haul everyone to jail and sort it out there. But not always is my way of dealing with things the best way. If the police simply responded to this domestic call without looking around, the living conditions of this couple’s children would have gone unnoticed.

Tuesday evening, Asha McElvy called 911 to report she was a victim of a domestic violence situation. She briefly described she had been hit on the head and was chased with a knife. When deputies arrived, she elaborated on the situation by stating Joseph Atkins (52), the father of her two children (ages 1 and 3), had thrown an ax at her, hit her in the head with a board, and chased her around the yard with a shovel during their marathon argument which took place in three intervals throughout the day. When police interviewed Atkins, yes, he admitted to the charges to a point, claiming he was just trying to scare her into leaving. Hell, it would have worked for me.

But upon inspection, not only did the officers find all the implements of destruction, they also found the two little children living in total hell. It was apparent the 4 of them shared a cot in the middle of the living room, there was not adequate food for children of that age, no electricity, and no flush-able toilet. Actually, they used buckets to run the toilet – and obviously it was a torturous job because when the deputies looked, the toilet was full. (and I don’t mean full of water) But before everyone gets in a huff about this, they had just moved to this trailer within the week…and it was a step up from where they had come. They were living in a portable building with no utilities and no toilet – working or not – that Atkins had forced them to live there. Whatever.

While placing the perfect parents under arrest for the various charges, Asha McElvy (23) was compliant at first and only went bat shit crazy when the deputies started to lead her out of the house. It became a battle of wills, and despite having to physically drag her to the squad car, place her in, and being spit on, the police won. The lovely lady of the house has been charged with two counts of child neglect,  battery on a law enforcement officer, and resisting arrest without violence. The charming man of the palace has been charged with two counts of child neglect and aggravated assault. The article didn’t state where the children had been taken but I think it’s safe to assume they won’t be returning to their parents anytime soon.

Bristol, VA- With the economy the way it is nowadays, the grocery bill can be alarming, especially if you have young children. I know mine think I am being the Wicked Witch when I refuse to buy every single item they toss into the cart which is usually several boxes of Fruit Gushers, Hostess Cupcakes, and those damn Kellogg’s Cereal Straws. To make matters worse, they eat the crap up within a day or two and then complain they have nothing good to eat. That is what forced me to start locking up their horde of instant-drive-mom-nutzfast in my filing cabinet and only disperse small rations from it when my husband angers me. Even though he says it’s a crime, it’s not and it sure is a hell of a lot better than what these three dolts came up with.

An anonymous call was made to the Children’s Advocacy Center of Bristol concerning a hungry 6-year-old girl being tied up for three weeks. After an interview was conducted with the child, and the staff of CAC contacted the police. Police searched the apartment and then questioned the three adults residing there with the child which were the girl’s grandmother, Elsie Reyes, her aunt, Virginia Ramos, and her uncle, Roberto Leiva. When interviewed, all three admitted that the girl was tied up in her bedroom to keep her from stealing food from the kitchen. At one time, she was tied up for an entire week straight. Police also learned that toy snakes and spiders found in the apartment were often placed on the bed around the girl because she was afraid of them.

The child’s aunt, 20-year old Virginia Ramos, is accused of tying up the child’s hands and ankles with some kind of fabric on a continuous basis for three weeks in July. She was charged with one count of child abuse and neglect.Her grandmother and primary caretaker, 46-year old Elsie Reyes, was charged with one count of child abuse and neglect for allowing the girl to be tied up. The girl’s uncle, 25-year old Roberto Leiva, was charged with one count of accessory to child abuse and neglect because he was aware of the abuse, but did nothing to stop it. There is no evidence tying Leiva to the abuse. All three are being held on $1,500 bond and police say additional charges may be added. Police do not know where the girl’s parents are or why the child has been living with her grandmother. The girl is now being cared for by another family member and an examination will determine if she was malnourished.

Elizabethton, TN – Megan Cullop was planning on doing some redecorating – so, on Monday afternoon, she loaded up her kid and headed for the nearest WalMart. After filling her shopping cart with the must-haves, she made a beeline for the door – completely bypassing the cash registers. Alert security personnel caught up with Megan at the door, took away her shopping cart, more than likely lectured her on the evils of shoplifting, and let her go. Now, if Megan had even half a brain cell bumping around in her vacant little noggin, she would have realized how lucky she was that the cops weren’t called in and chalked it up as a lesson learned. But, seeing as how she is gracing the pages of the Dreamin’ Demon, you know that wasn’t the case.

Megan is a moron. She returned to that very same WalMart the very next day, again with her 12-year-old son in tow, and proceeded to fill up another cart. Her shopping list consisted of bath towels and hand towels, several shower curtains, bath mats and rugs, candles, posters and poster frames, pillows, and a bottle of Kaopectate. She tried a different approach when she exited the store this time – she handed control of the shopping cart to her son, told him to meet her at the car, and she left the store. Brilliant plan, Megan! I am in awe of your diabolical planning skills. What could possibly go wrong? Well, her kid got busted as soon as he walked out of the store. And what did mom of the year do? She drove off – leaving behind her Kaopectate and her offspring. Nice. She didn’t get too far – she was pulled over about 5 minutes later. After that, a shoplifting charge was the least of her problems.

Her license came back as revoked because of a DUI in 2006, so she was placed under arrest and charged with driving on a revoked license. During an inventory of the vehicle before it was towed to the impound lot, officers discovered a couple of pill bottles in Megan’s purse – she had some Alprazolam, which were prescribed to her, 15 Xanax and 9 Lortab pills, for which there was no prescription. So, toss on a charge of simple possession, too! She’s also looking at charges of theft of merchandise over $500, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and child neglect.
