Woman Gets Prison Time For Killing Son With Meth-Laced Breast Milk

Eureka, CA - Maggie Wortman, 27, was sentenced to six years in prison for the death of her 6-week-old son, who died from ingesting meth from her breast milk.
When paramedics arrived at Wortman’s residence on November 21, 2010, Michael Acosta III was found in full rigor mortis. An autopsy report would later reveal the infant died of methamphetamine toxicity. Officials would claim the baby had ingested the meth through Wortman’s breast milk.
Court documents state Wortman tested positive for methamphetamine while six months pregnant and even admitted that, even though she was breastfeeding, she smoked meth “a couple of times a week” for three weeks before the infant’s death. Wortman’s then 19-month-old daughter would also test positive for meth and subsequently be taken into the custody of child protective services.
Wortman would eventually plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter but only because she thought she would get out of doing any time behind bars. But because she was already on felony probation for running a drug house at the time of her son’s death, she was ineligible for the probation she thought she would receive for admitting guilt.…

WINTHROP HARBOR, IL – A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged with sexually abusing children at his mother’s day care.
Brett Degler has been accused of sexually abusing three young girls, two 11-year-olds and a 4-year-old, since November of last year.
A two week police investigation began after the 4-year-old told her parents that it hurt to urinate and that “Brett did it.” Her parents took her to the hospital and then contacted police when it was revealed the girl had been sexually assaulted.
The girl was able to detail when and how she was abused durin an interview that lead police to a second victim. Degler admitted to assaulting a third victim during a police interview following his arrest a day later. The abuse had been ongoing for at least five months and took place when his mother was in another room of the house or at the store.
His mother, Cheryl Degler, has run a residential day-care for nearly 30 years and p0lice say she has cared for the children of children she cared for in the past.…

Muncie, Ind. – A mother in Indiana was arrested after she allegedly whipped her son with an extension cord after the teen got in trouble for wearing saggy pants at school.
Yolanda Womack, 40, was not too pleased with her 15-year-old son getting into a bit of trouble at his high school for letting his ass hang out. She instructed the boy to remove all of his clothes so she could whip him, a request the teen denied.
Not letting a bit of clothing come between some discipline, Womack began whipping her son with an extension cord anyway. The teen tried to fend off the blows and ran to a neighbor’s home for help.
When police arrived, they found a teen in pain and a mother who may have taken things just a bit too far. According to police, the teen was suffering from welts across his chest, back, both arms and above his left eye. Some of these injuries were bleeding.
Womack admitted to police that she had whipped her son and was promptly arrested for neglect of a dependent. She is facing 18 months in jail if convicted.…

Phoenix, AZ – Sergio Velderrain, 31, was arrested by Phoenix police faster than you can spell D-U-M-B-A-S-S after admitting to drinking Four Loko and then urinating on his 4-month-old son’s face and body.
The baby’s mother, Jennifer Velderrain, told a local news reporter that she woke up after hearing what sounded like running water.
“I looked over and he was in the corner peeing all over [our] son,” said Jennifer.
Jennifer Velderrain said she jumped out of bed and grabbed their son, Greyson, who she said was choking because Velderrain had peed on his face and mouth causing his airway to be blocked. Jennifer Velderrain said that she immediately called 911, telling her husband “He would have something to remember too for a long time – that he did that to his son.”

Scranton, PA - On Monday, police investigators were in the home of Waleska Guadalupe, 28, following up on allegations of abuse of her children.
During that visit, police asked Guadalupe’s daughter to show them a belt that the child had claimed Guadalupe had used to hit both her and her brother.
According to a criminal complaint filed in the case, the child went to a closet to retrieve the belt and – upon opening it – ‘reared back’ and told the officer she had seen “something disgusting.”
Inside the closet, police describe finding a sex toy. When police asked Guadalupe about the device, she reportedly told them that ‘she used it with her 15-year-old girlfriend.’

According to court documents, Police immediately contacted the Lackawanna County district attorney’s office and were advised to pursue an arrest warrant against Guadalupe for statutory sexual assault.

Jacksonville, FL — Police say 35-year-old Dalina Nicholas repeatedly pimped her six-year-old daughter out to homeless men in exchange for cash and crack.
Police found out about her alleged activity after a homeless man doing drugs in her home witnessed Nicholas’ daughter being sexually assaulted and then flagged down police. An investigation was launched and after interviewing the victim, who described being raped by three men and being physical abused, warrants were issued for her mother and three other men.
Two of the three men accused of raping the little girl, 56-year-old Quinn Brooks and 47-year-old John Hagans, who is homeless, were arrested on the sexual assault charges. Police are still looking for 51-year-old Norman Thompson. Police were not able to arrest Dalina Nicholas as she had already fled the state.
She was eventually arrested in Georgia, as a fugitive from justice, and is currently being held on a child-neglect warrant. She is expected to be extradited to Florida as early as this week.
The victim and her younger brother have been placed in the care of their grandmother who says that her daughter is just as much a victim as her granddaughter.…

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – A man is in jail after a fight with his girlfriend involved him biting one of her kids and punching the other.
Police say a fight broke out between 41-year-old Edward Critten and his girlfriend over the condition of the apartment they were living in. A television was broken during the fight and the two got into a physical altercation.
When the woman’s two boys, ages 9 and 11, ran out to defend her, Critten turned on them as well.
“It was at that time that the suspect bit the 11-year-old’s chest and then punched the 9-year-old in the chest,” said Capt. Corey MacDonald with the Portsmouth Police Department.
One of the boys ran to a neighbor to have them call 911. When police arrived, they found the 11-year-old had fallen down a flight of stairs during the argument and had to be taken to the hospital.
Critten was arrested and charged with second-degree assault, two counts of simple assault and one count of criminal mischief. Not surprisingly, he has a lengthy criminal history that includes charges of possession of controlled substances and possession of a deadly weapon.…

Police say a woman in Florida purposely left her 1-year-old son in a bathtub to drown because she hated him. According to the reports, 32-year-old Neha Patel admitted that she hated her son, Isham Patel, since the day he was born and blamed him for her depression.
On Thursday, she was alone with the 1-year-old when he began crawling towards her. In an effort to curb Isham from ever approaching her, she told police she slapped him before putting him in his crib for a nap.
When he woke up, she placed him in a half full bathtub and then walked out of the room. When she returned 10 minutes later, she found Ishan submerged and unconscious. Instead of calling 911 or performing CPR, she loaded the boy in her Toyota Sienna and took a road trip.
First she drove to a supermarket parking lot, then back home, then to Ocala and then to Tampa International Airport.…

New Castle, IN — A 56-year-old woman is facing battery charges after her two young grandsons claimed she burned their tongues with a heater, causing blisters.
The injuries were discovered late last month after the boys, ages 6 and 3, were returned to their foster parents after a visit with their grandmother.
The older child reportedly told police he and his brother were ordered to line up with their tongues sticking out. Grandma then used a screen from the front of a heater to burn them.
After an investigation that spanned nearly a month, Shirley Hagerman was taken into custody on two felony counts of battery. Police say she bonded out the day after her arrest.

GADSDEN, ALA. – The grandmother and step-mom of 9-year-old Savannah Hardin are currently in jail, both accused of forcing the girl to run for three hours straight until she had a seizure and later died.
According to police, 46-year-old Joyce Hardin Garrard and 27-year-old Jessica Mae Hardin, were punishing the girl for eating candy bars and then lying about it. They forced her to run around their double-wide trailer until she eventually collapsed. Her mother called 911 but Savannah would die days later at the hospital.
Her father was working overseas when he found out that his daughter was in the hospital and took eight flights to be with her. Four hours later, Savannah would be taken off the ventilator.
A state pathologist ruled Savannah’s death a homicide after finding she was extremely dehydrated and had a very low sodium level at the time of her death, suffering from a condition common in marathon runners.
“Basically she was caused to undergo physical exertion to the point in time where she just got dehydrated and her electrolyte levels got to the point where she couldn’t survive life,” Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp said.…

Madison, WI – Wisconsin authorities are working to unravel the case of an unidentified 15-year-old girl who was seen ‘stumbling down the street’ barefoot and wearing only thin pajamas in the winter cold. She was also scraped and bleeding. A passerby, Mike Vega, noticing her purple feet in his rear view mirror, stopped to help.
“The girl started talking about how her stepmother had just thrown her down the stairs, she had escaped out a window and was looking for help,” said Vega. “You could see fear in her eyes. It was very disturbing.” Vega added.
Vega said that the 15-year old girl – who weighed just 70 pounds – was scared at first to be inside Vega’s car, but that she became more comfortable after he showed her photos of his three young sons and a Mary Poppins video on his cellphone.

Stover, MO – Thomas Presley and his unidentified girlfriend are both in police custody after police say they attempted to conceal the beating death of the woman’s toddler by staging a hit and run accident.
Presley apparently told authorities he had stopped his vehicle along Highway 135 for a bathroom break early Thursday morning, when the toddler, identified as 3-year-old Blake Litton, darted into the road and was hit by a car. Presley claimed the car fled the scene.
Blake’s death was initially reported as a hit and run, but after further investigation, authorities essentially called bullsh*it on the man’s story. No skid marks were discovered at the scene, police say, and Blake’s injuries, which included violent trauma to the head and torso area, weren’t consistent
with a car accident.
“We have determined the child was assaulted at a home in Stover, resulting in his death,” said Morgan County Sheriff Jim Petty.
Sheriff Petty also has reason to believe Presley told the child’s mother what really happened to her little boy, and she was fully aware of the staged hit and run, but played along “to keep him out of jail.”
Presley, 21, is being held at the Morgan County Jail pending formal charges of second-degree murder.…

HONEA PATH, SC – A South Carolina mother is facing child neglect charges after nurses found maggots in her sick infant’s diaper.
Police say 20-year-old Michelle Butler’s baby was suffering from an ear infection but she didn’t have any medicine to treat it because she had spilled it.
A witness told police that the 10-month-old had a fever and was pulling at his ears so they gave the infant Tylenol and informed Butler several times that the baby needed medical attention.
Butler finally called 911 and EMS arrived to transport the infant to the hospital. When nurses removed the baby’s diaper, live maggots fell out. To top that off, the baby’s blood and urine tested positive for marijuana.
Police went to Butler’s apartment where they did find baby food, formula and diapers, but noted that the apartment was very messy and dirty.
On Monday, police found Butler walking down the road and arrested her. She was charged with unlawful neglect of a child and later released on bond. Her baby was put in the care of the Department of Social Services.…

PITTSBURGH, PA – Pittsburgh police say a 29-year-old monster beat his girlfriend’s 11-year-old son to death because he did not vacuum the apartment.
While Donovan McKee’s mother was at work on Saturday, he was being subjected to a nine hour beating at the hands of her boyfriend, 29-year-old Anthony Bush. The man was upset with the boy’s failure to clean up and was beating him with various objects found in the apartment.
Bush admitted to officers that he beat the boy with wooden sticks, hitting him in the head, legs, arms and torso, and would then order the boy to clean up the sticks after they broke. Police said that Bush even used a needle and thread to close a cut he’d caused on the boy’s arm.
By time McKee’s mother arrived home later that night, she found her son unresponsive. Bush tried to get McKee’s mother, Cynthia McKee, to say the boy had fallen out of a window but she refused and called 911 — after first calling relatives — saying her boyfriend had assaulted her child. When police arrived, they found the poor kid lying naked on the living room floor.…

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Police arrested a woman after she allegedly punched her 10-year-old son in the face during her anger management class.
Earlier this month, 30-year-old Misty Lawson was taking the class when she allegedly got pissed at her kid and punched him several times in his face and body. A counselor who witnessed the incident called police as well as Child Protective Services.
The boy suffered from redness to the eye and a knuckle bruise on the right cheek. Lawson was charged with fourth degree assault, and probably needs to get her damn money back. This isn’t the first time Lawson has made the news regarding something stupid she did with her son.
Last June she and 29-year-old Derek Noel left the boy, then 9-years-old, and a 12-year-old boy in the back seat of a hot car while the went inside a Kroger to get their pictures taken. CHARLESTON, SC - A teen mom was arrested after video surveillance in a hospital room captured her shoving cotton from a stuffed animal down her child’s throat.
The baby had been admitted to MUSC Children’s Hospital two weeks prior to the incident because her mother, 17-year-old Chevonne Youngineer, said her her child “frequently quits breathing or starts choking.” Luckily, according to Youngineer, she had learned CPR and saved her child’s life on multiple occasions.
Because of the child’s many brushes with death, the baby had been placed in a hospital room equipped with a hidden camera. The other day, Youngineer requested asistance because once again, her baby wasn’t breathing. Nurses were able to revive the infant and remove some cotton that had somehow made its way into the baby’s mouth.
Hospital workers reviewed the surveillance footage and watched as moments before she called the nurses, Younginer tore cotton from a stuffed animal and then shoved the stuffing into her baby’s mouth before covering the baby’s face with a blanket. After several seconds Younginer went back and pushed the stuffing further into her baby’s mouth and walked away.…

CAMDENTON, MO – Police have charged a woman with first degree assault and armed criminal action after she slit her baby’s throat. This came months after she told a minister she was possessed by demons and was afraid she was going to hurt her daughter.
According to the probable cause statement, Tyler Tebrock called police to report that his mother, 39-year-old Bradie Simpson, and his 9-month-old sister were missing. He was concerned because he had found blood and a bloody knife in his mother’s bedroom.
Police searched the area and would find Simpson holding her blood-soaked baby in some woods nearby a few hours later. The infant was unresponsive, suffering from a neck wound and Simpson would not say a word to police.
They were both rushed to the hospital where the baby underwent emergency surgery and is expected to make a full recovery. Doctors say that had it not been for the cold weather and the quick responses of all involved, the little girl would have probably died.
So far no motive has been given, but police did find a plastic baggie and two spoons in her room, one of which tested positive for heroin.…

SACRAMENTO, CA – Because she does not have a criminal past, the woman accused of killing her infant by cooking her in a microwave will not face the death penalty.
Last year, 30-year-old Ka Yang was charged with torture and murder after her 6-week-old daughter, Mirabelle, was found dead in her home. Yang told investigators that she was holding her baby when she had a seizure and passed out. When she woke up she said she found her infant dead on the ground beside her.
An autopsy would later show that the baby had died an absolutely horrible death, suffering from the kind of extensive thermal injuries one would suffer if cooked inside microwave like a really messed up Hot Pocket.
It would take three months for police to finish their investigation but once concluded Yang was charged with murder and had her three boys, who were all under the age of 7, removed from her home.
Yang and her family learned prosecutors would not seek the death penalty during a brief hearing on Friday. However,Yang is still facing a special-circumstance charge of torture that could send her to life in prison with no chance of parole.…

Pawtucket, RI — Dorcus Moore was taken into custody on child cruelty charges earlier this week for allegedly cutting off her 13-year-old daughter’s hair and dousing her in homemade pepper spray.
According to police, Moore became enraged after the teen walked in on her and her boyfriend having sex Sunday. The girl told police Moore ordered her to get a pair of scissors, which she then used to cut off all the kid’s hair.
When she finished with the kid’s ‘do, police say Moore then doused the kid’s face, arms, legs and vagina with pepper spray.
The girl apparently went to bed that night with chemical burns to her body, but alerted school officials the next day. School officials then alerted police.
Moore, 38, was released on a personal recognizance bond Wednesday, and ordered to have no contact with her daughter. The girl is currently with her father.
One neighbor apparently heard the kid being tortured, but did jack shit to help her. Another neighbor, who police believe may have held the teen down while Moore doused her in pepper spray, is being questioned.…

St. Paul, MN - When Jennifer A. Pickar, 30, went to a St. Paul emergency room on the afternoon of Jan. 1 to seek treatment for tremors, a nurse attending to Pickar noticed her 10-day-old baby boy appeared to have two black eyes. After examination, the baby was reportedly taken to the intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, where an examination revealed the extent of his injuries.
It turns out that the baby – for whom treatment was not being sought by the mother – also had bruises on his left ear, fractures on the bones around his eyes, and bleeding in the front and back of his brain. The baby needed a breathing tube and a shunt was surgically inserted into his skull to reduce swelling.
According to court documents, the 10-day-old underwent surgery to repair the broken facial bones, but more will be required. The baby’s current condition is unknown. Court documents say that the child is expected to have “significant deficits” because of the injuries. Doctors reportedly said the baby would have died without medical care and that his injuries are consistent with a “significant” or “multiple” impacts to the baby’s face.…
