Henderson, KY – Apparently someone forgot to let Amanda J. Brooks Lay and her husband Terry Lay know that April is Child Abuse Awareness month, so they should take a break from beating their kids. All five of them. On April 1, the Lays’ son Kalab, 3, died of injuries inflicted on him by his parents. Kalab’s twin sister was also found “covered in bruises” and had burn marks on her eyelids. The toddler told detectives she got the burns from her mother after her Amanda Lay poured liquid soap in her eyes for wetting the bed. And oh, yeah: the other children in the home also showed signs of abuse.…

Salt Lake City, UT – On Monday afternoon, seven-year-old Hser Nay Moo (pronounced Sen Na Moo) got in a fight with her 10-year-old brother. She stalked out of the family’s apartment, and her father asked Hser where she was going. She tossed her head, but didn’t answer. Baltimore, MD – At 1:15 Sunday afternoon, the desk at the Marriott Inner Harbor in Baltimore got a disturbing phone call from tenth-floor guest Mark Castillo. Castillo, 41, told the front desk clerk that he’d killed his children and was thinking about hurting himself, as well.  Security staff entered the room to find three dead children: Anthony Castillo, 6; Austin Castillo, 4; and Athena Castillo, 2. Oh, and Mark Castillo had a few surface cuts from the suicide he was too chicken to carry out after murdering his kids. …

Corpus Christi, TX - Easter weekend was a real bitch for a lot of little kids, it seems. On Saturday morning, March 22, at 2:37 a.m., Corpus Christi 911 got a call that 18-month-old Allyson Loraine Toomey was having trouble breathing. By March 24, Allyson Toomey was dead, her organs helping other babies who hopefully won’t be killed like she was. Little Allyson’s death has been ruled a homicide due to child abuse; the toddler died of massive blunt-force trauma to the head. Now police want to know who killed her. I have two guesses for you. …

Phoenix, AZ — It sure looks that way. On Friday night, March 21, Tyson Chamberlain and his girlfriend Chalice Rutherford were taking care of eight-month-old Easton Lee while his mother, Heather Kern, was out for the night. Kern, Chamberlain and Rutherford all lived in the same north Phoenix home. According to Chamberlain and Rutherford, they put baby Easton to bed about 10:00 p.m., but he woke up vomiting a few hours later. By 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 22, Easton Matthew Lee was dead. …

Sitka, Alaska – Jason Abbott did not like being in jail on Easter. Abbott, 18, had gotten into a fight with his mother, and she’d called police on Sunday morning because Abbott was yelling about red and orange being “evil colors”, and he didn’t want them in her house. After being released from jail on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge on Monday morning, Jason Abbott decided to get even with the harbingers of the evil red and orange.
On Tuesday, Abbott went to his grandparents’ house in Sitka and got all stabby, killing four people and injuring another. Dead are Jason’s grandparents, John and Alice Abbott, aged 69 and 68. Also killed were Charles Tate, 37, and a female victim identified only as “E.A.” The survivor is a daughter of John and Alice Abbott, called “M.R.” in the police report. …

DeSoto, TX- Jonathan Potts, 12, died Tuesday because his father, Terence A. Potts, 40, spanked him to death. Terence Potts called police from a gas station in Dallas at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday to report that his son, who was riding in a minivan with him, was not breathing.
When paramedics arrived to assess the child, they found that Jonathon’s back was covered with “looped marks” and extensive bruising.Some of the marks were older and crusted with blood, but some looked fresh.Jonathon suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital and was pronounced dead early Tuesday afternoon.…

Homestead, FL – The Amber Alert hit the airwaves and internet on Sunday night. Two little girls had gone missing from their Homestead apartment. Vanessa Rivas, 3, and Frida Gonzalez, 6, were nowhere to be found. The suspect was a man staying in the family’s home, known only as “Juan”. On Monday, “Juan” and the children were found near a Hialeah Gardens elementary school after being spotted by a woman who had seen the Amber Alert. …

East Spokane, WA — Dan Wortham, 39, spent a lot of time worrying about his daughter Jacqueline,16. He’d raised Jackie alone since her mother left when she was little. When Jackie would claim to be pregnant, which was often, or would run away, which was often, Dan would go and find her and bring her home. She never did have a verified pregnancy, and she fought Dan on everything from curfews to emancipation.
Dan Wortham said that Jackie could not be emancipated. She was a minor, and she was his daughter. On Good Friday night, Jackie emancipated herself. With a little help from her boyfriend Edmund Washington, 18, Jackie killed her father. …

Kansas City, MO – Three of Hazel Byes’ adult children have been arrested because they thought it was okay to leave their mother lying in her own waste for years on end. Is it Asshat Week in Missouri, or what? Byes, 85 and bedridden, was removed from her home by firefighters who had been called to help get Byes to the hospital. Firefighters called police after finding Byes in bed with the mattress indented and covered in what appeared to be dried human feces. There were no bedpans or portable toilets in the home. …

3/5/08 Bogalusa, LA – “This was not something that accidentally happened,” say Bogalusa police. “This was an intentional act.” And so it was, but by whom? Six-week-old baby Diana Nelson is on life support at Children’s Hospital in New Orleans after being rushed there in the early hours of March 3. She had blunt force trauma to the head and body, burns that were consistent with curling iron marks on her arms, internal bleeding, and benzodiazepines in her system. Among the people caring for her over the weekend were her mother, her grandfather, her uncle, her uncle’s fiancee, and various other relatives, friends, and alter-egos. …

Middleborough, Mass. – DSS dropped the ball on this one so hard it bounced. Michelle Henry, 30, has a record of neglect with Massachusetts dating to 2002. The Department of Social Services had been notified in December 2007 that her seven-year-old son was being beaten with a belt, and has sent caseworkers to the home four times in the last three months. So why didn’t anyone do a full-body check on March 4, when Henry’s little boy told school staff that he had cigarette burns? Your guess is as good as mine.
On March 17, the child went back to his teacher and reported again, and the school notified DSS for the third time in four months. When DSS finally got around to checking out Michelle Henry’s son later that day, he had cigarette burns to his buttocks and genitals. The child reported being beaten and burned by David Privette, 22, Henry’s boyfriend. Oh, and Privette also pissed on the kid’s head, just for funsies. …
