JONESVILLE, VA — An 8-day-old baby in Virginia was mauled to death in its bassinet by the family’s wolf-dog hybrid.

On Wednesday morning, the parents of the infant girl heard her crying in her room. When they went in to investigate, they found the dog standing over her.

“The child, according to the statements, was in a bassinet. There was blood in the bassinet where the dog had attacked the child. (There were) very serious injuries to the upper body, and the head,” Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons said.

The infant was rushed to the hospital by her father but would die later that afternoon. The 3-year-old wolf-dog hybrid was euthanized after being taken to the pound.

Social services have been called to check on two other children living in the home with two other dogs.

Parsons said he believes it is reckless to leave any child unattended with an animal, and is checking if any charges can be filed against the girls’ parents.

“I’m concerned about whether the child was protected, so the tough part for me is who is in the right and who is in the wrong, and you hate to charge parents that are grieving over a child, but at the same time you have to consider the rights of the child,” he said.

I agree with the sheriff 100 percent. While I feel for the parents and what they are going through by losing a child in such a violent manner, it was 100 percent preventable and 100 percent because of their negligence.

For 14 years I have been reporting on cases in which infants and children are mauled to death by the family dog and, to be honest, it’s as tiresome as reporting on parents who leave their kids to cook to death in hot cars.
