DEERFIELD BEACH, FL – A 14-year-old is dead after reportedly committing suicide at a gun range while target shooting with his father.

The teen, identified as Vincent Colonna, was at Gun World gun range with his father last week when the incident happened.

Colonna’s father told family members he was shooting his weapon when he looked up and saw his son slumped on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound.

The teen was airlifted to Broward Health North where he later died, Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

According to witnesses at the scene, along with surveillance footage, the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. However, the boy’s mother believes it was an accident.

“I know there was nothing wrong. I know Vincent was happy. He did not commit suicide,” said Joanna De Colonna.

She says she and her son had been a day at the beach for the 4th of July holiday, and that he was getting ready for a couple of chess tournaments.

However, she admitted she doesn’t have a lot of details regarding her son’s death and that she has been discouraged from seeing the surveillance footage.

“I know my son, and I want to see that video. I’m his mom. I would know,” said Joanna. “If something’s bothering Vincent, he would tell me.”

While the shooting could have been accidental, the fact that police are investigating this as a suicide after speaking with witnesses and reviewing video makes that scenario unlikely.

Gun range suicides are not rare, and we have other articles detailing people doing the same thing Colonna allegedly did. Hell, on Monday there was a suicide at a North Carolina gun range — and it was their second.

Obviously, I don’t know the details behind Colonna’s death or his possible motivation, but one lure is the fact that you can rent guns from the range. So, if any of you are planning to take yourself out and don’t have a gun to do it with, just visit your neighborhood gun range and rent a high caliber hand gun.

Most ranges don’t charge you until you leave, so aside from some mental trauma you may cause other patrons, your suicide will be totally free!

Thanks for the advice, morbid. LOL!!!

  • dumwise

    Repressed homo. Definitely

  • jansav

Glad to see you find this amusing.

  • aldenscott

Well, good luck in dealing with that, but you should probably try to make your comments about the article.

  • dumwise

Dad thought he could “man-up” the poor fellow by making him shoot guns. He’d rather be home accessorizing.

  • At what point anywhere in that article did I say that this kid shooting himself in front of his dad was remotely humorous? Some may find my useful, free suicide by gun advice out of place in this article, but I leave the hand wringing and condolences to the commenters.

  • mean birch

Creepy articles, witty authors, clever comments and now free USEFUL advice!
    I love DD.

  • mean birch

I’m laughing. But, beware. You might face critical responses. Some people don’t have a scarsam Gene. Personally I think you are funny.

  • mean birch

    You are on a roll

  • Morbid should have an advice column.

  • Inferus

‘He was happy. We were planning chess tournaments.’
    Check. Mate. Ma’am.

I think I like the sanctimonious commenters more. It’s entertaining anyway.

I’m tempted to post that tip to the frugal subreddit, but I don’t think it’ll be received too well.

    Not the tragedy, the comment

  • mean birch

    Well said

Maybe they were pushing him too hard.

Makes me wonder what ranges could do to protect themselves from this. Probably nothing. If someone is determined to kill themselves, they’ll put on a happy face for everyone and find a way to do it.

  • everjaded

The ranges in my area will only rent guns to those who already bring their own guns in. So in other words you can’t just go in and get your hands on a weapon if you couldn’t already.

I don’t know if that’s standard practice or not, but it might help.

If they don’t charge you until you leave – will they send the bill to your estate?

  • Mia York

Haha! I’d love to see that.

  • Ron Stark

  • Probably the only way he knew he could get access to a gun

  • Sejanus

14 and deciding life had nothing left to offer him is a tragedy.
    Kid had some demons.

    Mom seems in denial.
She wants to see the video…let her.

Why would you be glad that people find this amusing? You’re the real sicko here! I’m not glad to be amused.. I just am! If I was glad to be amused? That’d be pretty fucked up yo!

It was the funny comment above actually, I was going to criticize the American Constitution and the amendments to said Constitution… But I laughed instead! Fucking sue me…

He probably did it because some spiteful and sanctimonious ass-wipe called him that (or something like that) when he was alive… just as some other sanctimonious ass-wipe will call another emotionally lonely kid something like repressed homo.

  • Big Stan

Kids can be cruel to each other. I actually used to be one so I know this for sure 🙂

  • Big Stan

its not right obviously but its the way of the world and it is just unfortunate some people do not have thick enough skin to take a bit of abuse. Feel sorry for the mother who is in obvious denial, will take her a very long time to accept this I would imagine.

  • Old Man Metal

Some ranges require a membership, which I think is somewhat of a deterrent in that you can’t just walk in off the streets and use the range. I’ve never used public ranges or private ranges that sell by-the-month memberships just because of shit like this… if you’re not willing to pony up for a year, I don’t want to be in the lane next to you.

  • keepalow

Dad should have taken him to fly kites.

  • keepalow

As always, morbid, you bring stellar info to the board.
Its up to the readers to digest it as they wish.

  • dumwise

Hey, hey, holt right there buddy. I am 60 yrs. old and have quite an extensive collective of kite, which I fly every chance I get. What are trying to say? 🙂

  • Old Man Metal

I think that would look something like Sam Kinison as a Pet Psychiatrist…

  • keepalow

I fly kites. If the dad had taken him kite flying, there would have been no gun.

  • esmerald 2006

That’s why I’m here, to read the comments, they never fail to entertain.

  • Rest In Peace

  • ThrillHouse

but I like to bring my gun when I go fly a kite.

  • Bullies suck!
