Milwaukee, WI — A father frustrated with his son’s heroin addiction admitted to police that he shot the 27-year-old in the arm, but claims it was an accident.

Richard Matte told police he just wanted to scare his son by shooting into a wall.

Zak Matte reportedly told police his father entered his bedroom while he was injecting heroin into his right arm. Richard asked Zak if any money he had recently given to him had been used to buy heroin. Zak replied that it hadn’t — it was used to buy pot.

Zak claims his father asked him to turn and look at a hole in the wall. He then shot him.

“I shot my son in the arm on accident,” Richard told a 911 dispatcher. At some point in the conversation with the dispatcher, Richard expressed his frustration with his son’s drug use and said he just snapped. “I just got pushed to the point where I couldn’t take it anymore.”

Richard was charged with one count of reckless endangerment and remains free on $15,000 bail. If convicted, he could face up to 17 years behind bars.

Zak is currently recovering from the injury.

Sadly, I know this man’s frustration. While shooting my own child was never a consideration, I did consider showing up at his dealers door and end his life with a shot to the face. But, fortunately for us, rehab worked and no one was shot.

  • jansav

I feel bad for this man. I hope he doesn’t do any jail time.

  • itsknotme

    It is called ‘Shooting Up.’

  • Old Man Metal

When Shooting Up Goes Wrong… up next!

  • sweetd

It wasn’t an accident. It’s the wrong thing to do but I can understand his constant frustration. My Ma is a Heroin addict. I feel like who the f is this person I don’t know her.

  • sweetd

Yeah I’ve thought that too, but they will find another dealer another way to get high. It’s like nothing you can do and you feel helpless

  • sweetd

This is so stupid why am I laughing lmao

Scared straight isn’t what it used to be.

The 27 year old son was living at home, was given money by someone, and was doing drugs in the home? I guess paying rent was not one of the son’s priorities. Easy for me to say, but putting the selfish little fucker out of the house would probably have been better (and cheaper) for Dad than paying bail, a lawyer, court costs, potentially being sued by Junior, paying the big moocher’s medical bills and paying for the original stupid and desperate hole in the wall.

Who knows how much Junior owes his dealer and when the dealer(s) will turn up at the front door to collect. An addict has no respect for anybody and nothing except the his/her want of the drug of choice. Self centered to the max pretty much sums up the character of an addict. The son is morally bankrupt and probably not too far from the grave. Only he can make the choice to change and fear is not much of a motivator or he would have stopped.

Living on the street and being hungry for food might get the little bastard into rehab. Maybe not, but enabling an addict will only hasten the inevitable. Going down on strangers for drug money (probably a little more as he improves his technique) -or- going down the street to a 12 step meeting and dropping a couple of dollars in a basket? Sounds like a no brainer.

Good for you. If anything, shooting the dealer would have given your son yet another excuse to use. Remember Carroll O’Connor? Count your son and yourself among the lucky ones. I am glad you got your kid back…

  • JohnQknowitall

Your situation is heartbreaking. I hope you have a support network. In case you haven’t heard them… the 3 Cs: didn’t cause it, can’t control it, can’t cure it.

  • JohnQknowitall

I hope the same thing, but this guy could easily be thrown into bankruptcy paying for his defense and other expenses.

  • jansav

he is probably close to it anyway, with an adult son heroin addict living in his house.

  • link07

I had a close family member with a drug addiction. I get why dad might have done it. Btw that money was totally used to buy more heroin

  • link07

Easy to say… but i witnessed 2 very strong moral conservatives cave when the desperate addict was their firstborn son begging for $ because he is really hungry. Eventually the addiction lead to several rehab attempts and eventual death. It was like someone threw a bomb into their lives. Marriage failed, jobs suffered, never got past (how could they) losing a kid that way. Now both hoarders and miserably alone.

Thanks. Although, it never really is over. He’s been off heroin for 3 years now. But every day I look for signs, ask him questions or just drop subtle hints. The problem with an addict is that they usually replace one drug with another. They need to fill the void. We work on it everyday. I know the signs and I’ve had to step in more than once in the past 3 years to get him back on track. He now tries to help his friends get clean and offers them support. But I do consider myself lucky to have him back.

  • GGMon

It’s really frustrating to be in that situation. Addictions suck for sure but many times you can’t force someone to get clean unless they really want it

OMG! Lookit that dead drug addict on the floor!
    Where?
    Bang!
    Guy needs more range time.

  • Vinnym1980

Was an accident, was meant to shoot the bag head through the brain.

  • sweetd

Thank you. You don’t know how nice this is. I’m mentally preparing for her death as we speak.

  • dilldoeh

    lol so tough, grrrr.

  • Just Me

Always waiting, holding your breath and hoping they can manage to stay clean. Oh yes, many of us have been in your shoes, still are! Best of luck to you and of course you know you are not alone. I can totally understand this man’s frustration.

    You’re such a tool!
