According to the Elite Edge Transformation Center, the accident happened in their gym Monday morning as 22-year-old Kyle Thomson was bench pressing.
The barbell slipped from his grasp and, despite there being spotters present, the barbell fell and crushed his neck. Thomson was taken to the hospital where he later died from severe internal injuries.
Joe Brammer, owner of Elite Edge Transformation Center, said Thompson was working out as part of their Warriors advanced training program when the accident happened. He also said there was spotter assisting Thompson at the time.
“This is a difficult and painful time, and our thoughts are with the member’s family. Grief counselors are meeting with staff and gym members over the next couple of days. We would ask that you keep his family in your prayers,” said Brammer.
Thompson was a student at Iowa State University, and a former student at East High School where he was captain of the football team and selected as MVP during the baseball season of his senior year.
His high school weightlifting coach was shocked by the news and is wondering how such a routing exercise could have turned fatal.
“If you’ve got your spotter, they are there to help prevent things like this,” says Greg Schoon.Tags: Accident, barbell, crme, gym, Iowa, Kyle Thompson, weightlifting
