SADDLE BROOK, NJ – A couple had to make the tough decision to take their 3-month-old off of life support after being dropped on his head by a babysitter.

Police say Reece Modzelewski was being watched by a female family member on Tuesday when she accidentally dropped him on his head.

When police arrived at the home, Reece was unconscious and unresponsive. He was rushed to the hospital where he was put on life support.

Following his hospitalization, Reece’s father, 32-year-old Mark Modzelewski, posted on Facebook:

My little baby boy is dying and there’s nothing I can do to help or comfort him,’ Mark Modzelewski wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday. ‘I don’t know if he can hear, see, taste or touch anymore. My heart has been torn out of my chest.

A second of misfortune will turn into a lifetime of pain as is the case with most tragedies. The fact that this happening so close to Christmas and right between both of our birthdays will only make it more difficult.

He is such a friendly, smiling and happy baby and we gave him all the love we could… I love you Reece and hopefully there’s a heaven so I’ll be able to see your goofy little smile again someday.

Unfortunately, Reece was pronounced dead on Friday after his parents made the decision to remove their only child from life support.

“There isn’t anything more the doctors can do. Even if he wakes up he will have no quality of life; not being able to walk, talk or function on his own. This is the one of the hardest decisions anyone will ever have to make,” wrote a family member on a GoFundMe page created to help the family with expenses.

Reece’s death is being investigated by Saddle Brook Police and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, but at this time everything is pointing to this being nothing but a very tragic accident.

  • This makes me afraid to have kids. Like I’m a fuck up. I drop stuff every day. Poor baby. And if it’s indeed an accident, my heart breaks for the sitter as well.

  • How horrible.. for everyone involved. Poor , sweet baby.

  • This, right here, this is why having to babysit scares the living shit out of me.

  • Violet Rose

Poor baby may you find peace with the angels. I hope the parents are able to grieve and heal.

  • Oh no! This person will feel guilty for the rest of their life. Just very saddening.

  • All the excitement of his first Christmas gone. So sad.

  • I’m kind of calling bullshit. I get shit happens, I have a daughter. And have had accidents happen. Seriously tho, was she hanging him upside down and “accidentally” dropped him? Kids are pretty damn tough and it sounds fishy to me.

  • The dreaming demon doesn’t report accidents. This is murder in the first degree

  • Prayers.

  • Sounds like someone dropped a baby and nothing more.

  • They report accidents all the time.

  • Robyn

i dont buy it…kids are very durable and didnt realize that until I had them, lol. I dont think accidentally dropping them would do that.

  • Very well could be. Still calling bullshit. After all this is the dreamin demon.

If that was indeed a true accident I also feel terrible for the babysitter who has to live with knowing that they dropped and killed a family member of theirs.

This is why I would never do it. I had a huge fight with my dad when I was a teenager because the couple across the street wanted to pay me like $10 an hour when they went out. I was just too worried about something like this happening.

  • takurospirit

Maybe she was for some reason walking down a flight of stairs and tripped, then like did that reflex thing where you just grab. Then he went down. Obviously I’m just making shit up, but it could happen.

My guess is that this happened with ceramic tile or the brick edge of a fire place. It’s like the people who trip and fall onto a knife in the dishwasher – rare, and you have to fall in just the wrong way, but it does happen and has killed people. I know the brick edge of our fireplace could act very much like a knife if you fall on it the wrong way – we kept the whole brick hearth covered with a cushion until the kids were really old! It could definitely kill a baby dropped from your arms if the head hit first.

  • Wondering what douche clicked the haha emoji ?

Sad how the hell she drop him?smh

I don’t understand something. When babies have head injuries (fractured skull, Ect) and abusers try to say “oh I dropped them” you aways hear that a fall like that would not cause those type of injuries” so I’m not understanding how now a baby is dropped and the injuries are so massive that he has to be on life support? We see this all the time and constantly hear how a normal fall or a drop wouldn’t cause that type of truma. Just a little confused?

  • Tina Matthews

Grown men have died from falling and hitting their heads, I’m guessing it’s something to do with bruising or how the skull is fractured? They must have ways of knowing

  • Tina Matthews

On their head though, could’ve been on concrete floor or something

what did she drop him from? A second story balcony? That is a lot of head trauma for a simple accident. My heart goes out to the family may they find the strength to reach peace. RIP sweet baby. I truly hope this was an accident.

  • Sara

He must have hit his head at just the right angle, with just enough force. It’s unusual, but it can happen. Then again, it’s possible it wasn’t an accident. I hope it was. I feel so bad for the poor little guy’s mom and dad, along with the babysitter.

  • GGMon

I definitely agree with you on that. Plus the sitter must feel terrible at the moment

  • i read this, very saddened by it, but i tell you guys, whenever we have a new born in our family, i make a point of not holding it! babies are tough and stuff, but f-no, i never hold a newborn! too tiny and fragile to me, i just look at it, say its beautiful and stuff and keep right on walkin! not very good with my hands either, all thumbs, but imo, i think there maybe more to this story, js, it may come out and it may not. tyvm.

  • Will Burts.

  • Amy Conti sending positive vibes to your friend , maybe it was an accident that he pressed the haha emoji , only he knows , I think your friend knows you accidentally pressed it , don’t beat yourself up over it , have a blessed new year

  • In his defense, a friend of mine is losing her battle with cancer. Recently, she uploaded a video to fb on her latest- and likely last-chemo treatment. She looks like a shell of the beautiful, vibrant woman I’ve always known. It was so heartbreaking to watch, I couldn’t even finish it. I hit the crying emoji and closed the app. About a week later, it popped up in my feed again because of all the comments. I noticed someone clicked the laughing emoji and I was like wtf!? Then I realized it was me. It was obviously an accident, but I’m still upset about it. I know she seen it, it was there for about a week. I haven’t wanted to apologize to her, or explain because she’s severely ill and has more pressing issues to deal with and preparing her family and babies for when that time comes ????. I know its a minor thing to her, but I am absolutely mortified.

  • Sorry, I made too many typos, so I just resubmitted my whole comment. Thank you, Jude Rome. That was very kind, and I’m sure you’re probably right. She knows my heart. Happy new year to you, too ????

  • Amy Conti thanks hon

  • RICHKIDS

Don’t need to be walking around with the baby if you don’t have to!

My heart cannot take tragedies that don’t have to happen.

  • Yeah, without details, it’s hard to imagine how it happened. Babies are tougher than they appear.
