Boy, 12, Dies After Being Buried In Snow Bank

December 14, 2016 at 7:35 am by

GREENWICH, NY – A 12-year-old boy has died after he and a friend were buried in a snow bank while building a fort in the snow.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon as the boy played in the snow on a dead end street where a public works truck plowed snow in the area.

When the boys failed to return home, 911 was called and police arrived on the scene. A K-9 would find a sled near the mound of snow, prompting search crews to start digging.

“There was probably a dozen-and-a-half men with shovels and bare hand digging, and I think they moved – with no exaggeration – seven tons of hard packed snow in about 10 minutes time,” said Greenwich-Cambridge Police Chief George Bell.

One boy was found unresponsive and rushed to Saratoga Hospital where he would be pronounced dead. The second boy was found an hour later and, surprisingly, was alert and responsive. He was taken to the hospital and is talking.

At this time it is not known if the snow fort the children were building collapsed on top of them, or if they were buried by the snow plow (or both). However, the boy who lived said he heard what sounded like machinery before everything went dark.

It’s stuff like this that drove me nuts when my kids were growing up… all the stupid, stupid ways they could die.

How many of us built snow forts like this as kids. You never really think it’s going to cave in on you. It can, but who worries about that? : But it sounds like the snow plow did for them, this time.

    Omg, how horrifying!

how sad. my heart breaks for this family. I can’t imagine a worse tragedy than to lose a loved one during the holidays. Nothing like a yearly reminder to haunt you for the rest of your lives. May they find peace to remember the good times. RIP sweet boy.

Yeah, this one’s sad. It’s not like the kids were even being bad or anything–it just didn’t occur to them the fort could suffocate them or that the snow plow would come along and bury them. “Quit texting and go outside and play!” they said, “It’ll be fun!” they said.

Poor babies. I feel for the family that lost their child. I want kids but I’m with morbid, the different scenarios of my children dying is going to drive me insane and I don’t want to be THAT parent to shelter them from the world

This is going to be a mighty grim holiday for the one family.

Growing up, I never thought of a snow fort collapsing on us. My parents certainly never warned us of it. (Hmmm) It’s just not something you imagine when you have a snow day and you’re hopping around trying to get in that damn snowsuit and out the door. R.I.P. little guy. I hate it when a kid has to serve as a bad warning.

I hope it was quick for him at least ????

Blizzzard of ’78 a child was reported missing, they found him just outside of his porch steps when the snow thawed a little. I was 9 when that happened, never played near/on snow banks again.
