Boy, 12, Dies After Being Buried In Snow Bank

GREENWICH, NY – A 12-year-old boy has died after he and a friend were buried in a snow bank while building a fort in the snow.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon as the boy played in the snow on a dead end street where a public works truck plowed snow in the area.

When the boys failed to return home, 911 was called and police arrived on the scene. A K-9 would find a sled near the mound of snow, prompting search crews to start digging.

“There was probably a dozen-and-a-half men with shovels and bare hand digging, and I think they moved – with no exaggeration – seven tons of hard packed snow in about 10 minutes time,” said Greenwich-Cambridge Police Chief George Bell.

One boy was found unresponsive and rushed to Saratoga Hospital where he would be pronounced dead. The second boy was found an hour later and, surprisingly, was alert and responsive. He was taken to the hospital and is talking.

At this time it is not known if the snow fort the children were building collapsed on top of them, or if they were buried by the snow plow (or both). However, the boy who lived said he heard what sounded like machinery before everything went dark.

It’s stuff like this that drove me nuts when my kids were growing up… all the stupid, stupid ways they could die.
