leonardo-sanchezWEST JORDAN, UT – Here’s some nightmare fuel for any of you with children in daycare. A 1-year-old boy suffocated under a bean bag chair as a daycare worker sat on it and read a story to other children.

On Sept 8, Leonardo Sanchez was at the West Jordan Child Center when he crawled under a bean bag chair to hide. A female daycare worker, unaware Leonardo was under the chair, sat in it and began reading a story to the other children.

Surveillance camera footage shows it was 15 minutes before it was realized Leonardo was missing and was located under the bean bag chair. Attempts were made to resuscitate the boy at the daycare, but he would be pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.

His parents are understandably upset and want to know how something like this could have happened to their son, who would have celebrated his second birthday this Saturday. A day that will now be the boy’s funeral.

“I’m just confused on how you don’t know where my kid is. How do you not feel him? How do you not hear him scream?” said the boy’s mother, Danielle Sanchez. “Somebody dropped the ball, and now we’re going to have to bury a boy because of that.”

Sgt. Joe Monson, with the West Jordan police, called the incident a tragic accident and no charges have been filed against the unidentified employee who sat in the chair.

As for West Jordan Child Center, they have had two violations in the last five years, including one instance in which children were left unsupervised. Tom Hudachko, with the Utah health department, is still collecting information for their report.

The day care released the following statement:

“We regret deeply the tragic death of a young toddler at our day care facility. No words adequately describe the depth of the sorrow we feel. And, of course, we do not pretend to understand how devastating this is for the family.”

  • Facebook never disappoints with the advertising.

  • Man this kid got beanboozled

  • Can you imagine how horrified the worker would’ve been if she did this accidentally?

  • WTFOMGLOL

There’s got to be more to this story. You can’t sit on a bean bag pouf and not feel a child struggling underneath it. I’m inclined to think he suffocated before she ever sat down on it.

  • IronWoobie

If the bean bag chair was that big, how did no one notice him slipping under it to hide?

  • Did the kid not move at all while under the beanbag? And if he did, how did the worker not feel it? Cries? A leg sticking out? No? Do they have that many kids in their daycare that they can’t keep track of them all?

  • How the hell could you not feel a child or hear him suffocating?? Somethings not right here. ????????

  • Maybe I just assume the worst these days, at least regarding children and deadly “accidents”, but something about this screams it wasn’t an accident. I hope I’m incorrect.

  • You don’t notice he’s missing? You don’t feel shit under the chair? So many questions…

  • I have a funny feeling about this too.

  • Like a punishment that went too far….

  • LuvsHorror

My ads under this are for beanbag chairs. Really?!

  • dammitall23

It’s the new “Gee I forgot I left the kid I forgot I even had in the hot car” game.

  • dammitall23

Poor kid wins as the Hide and Seek champ. Unfortunately, the prize isn’t all that great.

  • Skye omg just horrific she didn’t even know! (Which I find hard to believe)

  • Well people are pretty big nowadays. Maybe she felt him and couldn’t get up in time.

  • Jamie Carter Park I was wondering about that. If she was obese I guess she wouldn’t feel him ????

  • It sounds terrible but that’s how I pictured it in my mind.

  • No charges? Oh fuck you, Utah. This is involuntary manslaughter, easily, I hope the parents sue the shit out of this bitch and the daycare center.

  • Christopher did a write up on a man who barbecued the family dog because he didn’t like his daughters shirt, iirc. FB loved that article SO much, all the ads were for reeeally cool barbecue grills up to 35% off! What a deal!

  • Yea, I remember that one lol

  • Uh, I’m fat and I’d damn well feel it if I sat on a kid. Being fat doesn’t block out your sense of touch.

  • Couldve been sleeping under it

  • She weighs over 350 lbs look on their fb page you will see her. Someone in the area pointed it out to me

  • And didn’t move when someone sat on him?!

Bean bag chairs come in a variety of sizes and are often fill with Styrofoam beads or shreaded foam rubber. Both materials can act as a sound insulator in many home appliances. Possible scenario: the chair is large and sound proofed, the chair conformed to the shape of the child and child was unable to move. If they have multiple people watching the children I can understand the short term assumption the child went to the restroom.

  • How does this happen?.. At some point the child had to move around.. He was weeks away from being 2 yrs. old. Anyone whose had a kid, knows that a toddler is almost always in constant movement. I’m finding this very hard to believe. The parents have a every right to be outraged.. This needs to be investigated further.

  • WTFOMGLOL

Okay, fair enough. Let’s see if they post a photo of the bean bag chair in question, and I will reserve further judgement until then …

Damn website cookies always do this. I get chronic ads for every little bitty thing I ever search for online, to the point where I have to go clean out the cookie cache, to get rid of them. I don’t think it’s the DD’s fault ….

  • Randall Bowers

  • CT

    Me too. That’s awesome.

  • IT’S STORYTIME

  • Omg I shouldn’t laugh at the chair advertisement but I did

  • OMG

  • I’m hoping her sitting on him immediately killed him which would be why he wasn’t moving.

  • And why hire a 350 pound person to care for small children, I’m sure that care was stellar

  • I had a daycare. There is no way one of my toddlers could have gone missing for 15 minutes and me not realize it.

  • LynnKayee

Was this book…was it about a goat by chance? It seems people forget they have responsibilities when reading it. ALSO…Maybe she thought a Chinese Wal-Mart sweatshop worker fell it and it was too late for Chinese Chad, she had to think of the children now. And the goat.

  • Have you guys ever been under a bean bag when someone has sat in it before??? My boyfriend and I constantly horse around, and when we didn’t have a couch we used two very large bean bag chairs. Let me tell you: I’m 5’11 and could not move under his 150 lb weight, and it muffled my voice so he did not know it was harmful. He felt so bad. I felt like it was suffocating me. Please stop blaming the employee, and blame the employer for having such a potentially hazardous item in a daycare at all

  • Or he was strangled already Kmt

  • Have u got the link probably going take it down Kmt

  • All their albums are gone only pics others tagged their page on

  • Let’s just assume the worker was totally innocent. Let’s say the child was asleep when she sat down & it was absolutely innocent on her part. Can you only imagine what she is going thru right now?

  • I’m sure he could still feel you underneath him.

  • Mia York He obviously knew I was there because he put me there, but I’m talking about a very large bean bag chair that has a back to it and everything. he probably did feel a bump beneath him but the beans redistribute themselves to accommodate the space they are in and what’s on top of the chair. At a daycare center, the woman probably assumed it was one of 1,000 toys, if she felt anything at all. This is a baby, not a 5’11 grown woman. It was a horrible accident, stop demonizing people just because you feel powerless about a terrible situation.

  • I agree, Jeannie. I think this was just a tragic accident. She was reading to the other children! He looks to be a little guy. Even if she was a petite woman, her weight on top of his (and the beans redistributing to accommodate bodies) would have rendered him unable to move at all. It likely cut off his voice box, too. Just tragic, all around ????

  • A one year old child would not have been able to move much at all (if any) if an adult is sitting on the bean bag. And unfortunately any noise he may have made would have been muffled 🙁

  • A one yr old would not be able to move under a large bean bag. Esp with an adult sitting on the bag itself. It would muffle any sounds as well 🙁

  • Yes.. That’s true.. But the story refers to “a one year old”.. So we picture a 12 month old baby.. But he was actually 8-9 days from his birthday.. So basically he was 2 .. And at that age they’re much more mobile. I still think there’s more to the story.

  • Agreed I could not imagine being parent foremost or the daycare employee, “NOT” comparing but I ran over my cat I didnt know I ran him over completly til after,, it felt like I was going to break mentally/physically from guilt ,my heart hurt every second ,everyday for a long time even tho I didnt mean too ,,I couldnt imagine doing this to a child 🙁

  • Scout Kent

Right?? It’s a daycare, knowing where all of the kids are is a pretty minimal expectation!

  • juka

Yall need to get hip to adBlockPlus. I almost NEVER see any ads, not even on youTube…it’s wonderful.

  • Leslie Mashmann

Odd story – how can you missplace a 23 month old for 15 minutes in a day care setting? It may not sound very nice, but I would like to know the weight of the person sitting in the chair.

  • CheckeredPresent

the kid stories are just horrible. Just when you think you’ve seen a really bad one, another one comes along to take its place, like this one http://ktla.com/2016/09/14/dad-kills-6-year-old-daughter-in-front-of-park-rangers-tells-them-its-what-she-wanted/

  • Sejanus

How much of a human manatee must the worker have been.
How do you not notice a kid missing?
    Shut the place down forever!

  • Ms. Hawaii007

That’s what I was thinking exactly WTF OMG LOL like how does an ADULT sit on a bean bag chair with a toddler under it struggling crying out for H E L P then the Police say it’s accidental? Doesn’t make sense! I’m inclined to think he suffocated WHEN she plopped her big ass on top of him & didn’t care! Having the video tape which the Police say PROVE it was an “accident” I’m not buying it!

  • Ms. Hawaii007

Really the Police got it WRONG! This was no “accident” not Atall! Revisit the case by reviewing the tape maybe the daycare worker “pretended” not to feel the child struggle? I think not! Really even at a tender age a cry or a struggle would take place so I’m not buying the Police’s explanation. Close the daycare center after this daycareless worker is ARRESTED & charged for the murder. RIP angel
