11842301.JPGOrillia, ONT — In early April roughly two years ago, 48-year-old Maria “Tonie” Farrell was leaving work in her Tim Horton’s regalia, when she heard the cries of a woman being attacked behind a nearby convenience store. She immediately ran to the woman’s defense as a man punched the victim and took off.

After a short time, Sgt. Russ Watson of the Ontario Provincial police showed up on scene, alone. Mrs. Farrell attempted to show the sergeant the direction the alleged perpetrator took, trying to be helpful as grannies are wont to do. In reaction, Sgt. Watson did what any good officer would and told her to “shut the fuck up” before needlessly and brutally attacking her — because grandmothers are terrifying and must be handled with extreme prejudice.

Watson reportedly karate kicked Farrell in the leg before sucker punching her in the face. Once she was down, he kept her down with a knee in the back. Leg dangling and in extreme pain, Farrell was then handcuffed and loaded into the back of Watson’s cruiser.

For his part, Sgt. Watson claims Farrell *gasp* poked at him! And maybe she was drunk and rowdy! Yeah! That’s it! Then, when he went to perform his sacred duty of arresting someone for poking him, she had the audacity to resist. What’s a raging keeper of the peace to do?!

In court, Justice George Beatty shot down Watson’s whole story. And insulted him, which is a nice touch I find. Judge Beatty told the court that, rather than this being a disorderly woman being subdued, this was a woman who only tried to help being attacked by someone “controlling” and “large and powerfully built”. He told them how she wound up with a broken leg, a crushed knee, a lost tooth, as well as back and neck injuries. How she’s been left crippled and unable to work, and unable to afford her rent. He pointed out how the officer made no attempt to explain her extreme injuries, and made no record of his punching her despite her obvious injuries and his obvious lack. It’s not that she’s not deadly, it’s just that he’s really Bruce Lee.

So, this woman goes to help another human being who’s being attacked, and she winds up with worse injuries, inflicted on her by an officer of the law. Safe communities, indeed OPP.

And this guy hasn’t been charged because? Oh… because the SIU found no reason to, despite the extent of Maria Farrell’s incredible injuries and Watson’s refusal to even turn over his notes from the encounter.

The refusal of the O.P.P. to charge the officer with assault & battery at the very least is PURE BS. Nothing to do with justice, it’s all about the preservation of the blue wall. And, it would appear that this one fell squarely on top of her.

  • KG

wait, if he refused to hand over his notes on the situation, wouldn’t they just call in an internal investigation team and take them?, or wait, let me guess, there is no internal investigation team.

  • Jesus H. Goldberg

WTF, Canada? You used to be cool…

A hearty fuck you welcome, DamagedGoods

  • Texas Ranger

Fuck you Damaged! I didn’t know Canadians had Dickhead cops too.

  • Sejanus

Hiring thugs to wear badges and wield the power of law enforcement….this is indeed beccoming a fascist state.
Canada, we need a good old fashioned revolution ffs.
This is why cops get calling pigs, and rightly so.
This bastard needs to have his badge taken, be imprisoned forever and forced to endure any and all beatings we see fit to visit upon him.
    Fuckeyed pussy.

  • Taster’sChoice

Our “leaders” really need to do a better job of making the correct decisions when it comes to prosecuting police in these cases of obvious police brutality. I know this didn’t happen in the US but this type of thing happens all too often here too.

  • Kim Graves

totally in the wrong but the obvious cop hatred is going to keep me from reading this site any longer, there is good and bad in every type of job and this is definitely a bad one but then again we do not know how she approached the officer at all she could have been combative thinking she knew his job better than he did and not backed down when he asked her to, why would you even think to put your hands on a cop at all? sorry but this is not the entire story i am sure.

on that note the obvious cop hate is deplorable in my opinion and i know i will get bashed by some here but again its just my opinion but i need to step back from this site as it reflects on it what the writers write and with things as they are now with our country going down the tubes its like opposite world where thugs are the heroes and peacekeepers are the villians and not human i think its disgusting that over 700 cops have died since 2006 and rarely are they even newsworthy but people resisting arrest and committing suicide by cop are regalled as innocent honor students or great people even with video corroboration they are not it just makes me sick like those copblock pages etc ugh

  • Only one way to solve the pig problem in this country…

  • Over 700 cops have died, and that is tragic. But the majority of those deaths were car accidents, so I feel you’re being a little disingenuous. In 2013, 27 officers were killed by felonious acts. The rest were accidents. We have not waged war on police, by any means.

But shit like this keeps happening, and it could happen. I can only hope that the good cops will do more to prevent that.

  • Gayle

While I do appreciate your point, I assure you not everyone here is a “cop hater”. In my case, the one I married has been on the force for 32 yrs. He finds both the articles and the comments regarding rogue police officers amusing and rarely unwarranted. “Good cops” generally aren’t featured on True Crime sites.

43 of the 110 killed by gunfire, i dont know where you got your numbers but they are not correct and auto is 46 and not all “accidents” since some were seen helping on the side of the road and hit purposely

I’ve read the above comments….and if the above is indicative of “cop-bashing to the extreme” as she claims…they have really, really thin skins, and a cop should have at the minimum Kevlar skin that can brush off the assholes of the world. That’s their job isn’t it? handle assholes, so that other assholes don’t get involved and serve their own justice? Am I off on this? I am personally ambivalent on cops. I’ve met the bad and the awesome. I judge them individually on their actions and merits, just like I do a regular person.

  • itsknotme

In the cop’s defense, would I rather chase a really mean, big as Hell bad guy or do I just beat up a harmless Granny? And, Granny is like ‘so here’ and ‘not like way over there.’ And who to say, she didn’t have it coming!?!? I mean she had to have done something in her life that a justifiable beat down was due. Besides, this is Canada, with free Healthcare. Whatever major injuries was done, the state will pickup the cost. Shoot, I mean, Hell, maybe this is the Canadian version of the ‘Knock Out Game?.’

  • Drew Swift

    fuck i’m hungry

  • GracieW

“Good” cops protect the bad cops by covering for them, refusing to investigate and making excuses. Therefore they are “bad” cops as well because SILENCE IS CONSENT.

  • jansav

Well it’s a relief to know that Canada is catching up with our sterling example!

  • jansav

The whole world has dickheads…some of them happen to be cops.

  • Buffettgirl

Bunch of no good copycats is all they really are… 😉

  • jansav

IKR? everybody knows the USA has the monopoly on police brutality. Geez Canada get your own hobbies! LOL

  • Buffettgirl

Fuck You @DamagedGoods – well done!

Makes me wonder if the cop was on steroids or something?

PS: That freaking “O.P.P.” on the cop car has that dumbass song going through my head now, thanks for that… NOT!

  • Kim Graves

so how many coworkers do you see do something wrong and not say anything to your boss about? silence is not consent! kids do not tell about being sexually abused as soon as it happens in most cases is that consent because they do not? how easy do you think it is to walk into your bosses office and say so and so is doing this or that with no proof more than likely or you would not have to say shit, now imagine being a cop telling your boss about your partner i am sure its near impossible but i bet some have done so anonymously
    Beverly graves

  • Kim Graves

also they do not investigate themselves that is up to internal affairs i am sure and while their are no doubt bad cops i still know there are way more good ones

  • Malodorous

I think you’re reading too much into it. I’ve known her for a couple years now and she’s never struck me as some cop-hater. I can’t even recall a single other anti-LE comment or meme she’s ever posted, either here or on FB. I think she was just being sarcastic about this particular case, and you’ve interpreted as some generalized attack on police. Relax. Most of us don’t hate cops, we just hate the shit cops.

  • The FBI, and yeah, they’re right.

Gunfire can be accidental, and if an officer was purposely run over, that would be a “felonious act”.

27 officers were purposely killed last year.

  • I don’t know, Tex… I fall into the same category of judging by merit. To my knowledge, no staff member of this site has an anti-cop bias, much less “hatred”. It certainly didn’t come across in DG’s write-up, nor do I see it in a lot of comments…

  • Wait… did you just compare the coverup that occurs with illegal assault or murder by an officer of the law to keeping quiet about paperclip theft or a child that stays quiet about being molested?

Now, I disagree with GracieW because this is a problem that needs to be addressed from the top down, not the bottom up. Good cops who turn on their bad “brothers” have a lot more than a bad rep to worry about. They risk the loss of a career and, sometimes, physical violence and threats from other Boys in Blue… only for the whistleblowing to get swept under the rug by a superior.

  • starry1

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

  • Gayle

Thank you, Beverly. I’ll send him the link at work. I know he’ll appreciate your support. As Malodorous commented, I’m also very familiar with the author’s sense of humor, and their morals and ethics are very much intact. While it’s true we have no additional information on what prompted this officer’s actions, the author is reporting this incident based on the information we do have available at this time which does look to be beyond any reasonable Peace Officer’s response. I hope you choose to stay and enjoy the site with us. Thank you again for your kind response to the “good guys.”

  • Kim Graves

i was talking about “silence means consent” its not a good statement and can be put on any situation and no i do not agree with it i am saying noone knows how high up the corruption goes in any dept but i am betting in some it goes up pretty far and that is why good cops leave i never said i condone it and i myself have tried for 5 yrs now to get something done at an adult living facility that abuses the disabled people that live there by calling every state dept i could and lawyers and police etc to no avail, i even started a thread on topix to try and warn people not to put their adult children there, it got a little attn but not much, the state dept gave my name to the two abusers i knew and i got death threats along with threats against my daughter who was less than a yr old at the time, look up advoserv in hewitt nj you will see what i mean, in no way do i condone covering up for bad cops but i can see that even when you do report it how higher ups can sweep it under the rug labeling you as the real trouble maker

DamagedGoods, This Fuck’s for you! 😉

  • ScarletHarlot

I’m really not seeing the cop hatred in this article that you say you’re seeing, especially when you agreed that “this is definitely a bad one”.

I mean no offense when I say this, but are you sure you’re not projecting your feelings about things you’ve read on other sites onto this one? With the stuff going on in Ferguson and other similar cases, there has been a lot of anti-cop vitriol around, but very little of it on this site. Are you sure you haven’t read a lot elsewhere, then saw this, and thought “oh god, not another story about a bad cop!” and decided there is more to this than there is?

  • iamsuzieque

I know Toni and she was only trying to help the officer by pointing out that the guy was running away like anyone of us would have done and I am a 58 year old granny and I cannot imagine this happening to me. This officer was not afraid of her or her intent to harm him so why did he abuse his authority? because I think he thought he could and did up until now. I am glad she fought back in the courts because that was the right thing to do. Her life has changed forever because of this assault. How can I really trust the police if they are beating up the people who rely on them for assistance? Not all police are bad, my uncle was a high ranking officer and so were my two cousins, but not all are good. They really need to make them more accountable for their actions and get rid of the bad ones.

  • iamsuzieque
  • ScarletHarlot

Well, it’s your choice which articles to read, of course, but I can assure you that Damaged Goods is not anti-cop. This just happens to be the first front page story of her’s you’ve read.

I’m not anti-pitbull, but I can assure you that if there’s a nasty pit story, I’m writing that bad boy up. Then the comments will accuse me of being anti-pit, because that would be the first they know of me.

I wonder if you would have taken the same stance had Morbid covered this story? I really think you’re shooting the messenger here.

  • iamsuzieque

lol now you made me think of that damn song.

This is a site to read outrageous crime stories. We’re really, really, hard on bad cops and abusers of children. Virtually every cop you read about on this site has committed some heinous act, so of course, you will hear us heaping abuse on cops here, we hold them to a higher standard of behavior than some thug on the street. When a horrible crime involves a heroic cop, we express our admiration. None the less, peace officer is a career likely to attract a greater than average number of controlling personalities, so it’s not that uncommon for bad seeds to slip into the force.

  • Cat Mc

    this particular case sucks balls.

  • Oh man Grandma’s day was not going well. People second guess themselves stopping to help another in need reading, seeing, and hearing stuff like this as it is. Now you got police to lazy to give a shit, but they’ve got bounds of energy to revictimise and beat old ladies. Wow.

  • Lucy Van Pelt

Maybe he didn’t get his kraft dinner, eh?

  • Gayle

Thank you very much for posting this follow up article. Details are often unclear in breaking, or ongoing news stories, and it is always good to find that the original circumstances surrounding the perpetrator, in this case a provencial police officer, were correctly reported. I believe this judge was likely as astounded at his degree of brutality as we were, “drinking” on duty suspicion aside.

  • tkaz

Why can’t the cop be forced to turn over his notes?? WTF are notes for if they’re not used in cases?????

Interesting. There are a couple there, and a cop running over a skater. Ok, it happens once or twice a year. Is that 10 or 20 points?

  • LOL Sorry… if it helps, I gave the worm to Jaded first!

  • Ahh… I have no problem with cops, even after years of them doing DUI checks in front of my house, meaning I’d have to do a dui check every single time I came home. I was so hateful to them for this that I’d bring them hot coffee. I’m a terrible police abuser.

I do have a problem with people who beat the shit out of other people. I especially hate when the people doing the beating have a moral, legal and job-related DUTY to protect the very people they beat up.

Personally, I hold cops to a higher standard because I DO respect the good ones, but hey if you want to drop the bar to “at least he didn’t shoot her” I guess that’s up to you…

I’m also not terribly keen on people who jump to conclusions.

  • I was actually a little shocked by this one myself, but then I’m naive.

  • LOL

Hey… I gave you a link to one of my articles from _2008_. I’m not new, I’m just an exceedingly rare vintage.

  • Kim Graves

yeah cause every person getting their ass beat by cops was a law abiding citizen not resisting arrest! oh please give me a break yes there are bad cops but there are 100 times more good cops
    Beverly graves

  • Actually, Ontario has an external/civilian investigation unit for police and they are who he refused to hand over the notes to in the first place. Apparently they just went, “Oh, you don’t want to give us stuff to investigate? OK, carry on!” because why not?

    Beverly graves

  • What the hell does that have to do with THIS case?!

I’m talking about THIS case, the one where a JUDGE told the cop he lied, and determined that the person you seem to think deserved an ass-kicking was INNOCENT. What part of this are you having trouble with?

  • Thank you

  • ScarletHarlot

I think you got your rage targets all mixed up in your head, made some silly comments about this site and about DamagedGoods that, in hindsight, you must have realised have more do to with your rage at the world/society/cop haters in other media, and you’re in too far now to back out now.

You’re doing something called “moving the goalposts”. Instead of addressing the specific allegations you made (to refresh your memory, that this site is anti-cop, and that DamagedGoods is a cop-hater) and several people have called you out about the fact that neither of those things are true. Now you’re throwing out completely unrelated cases… why? To shift the discussion away from the unfair allegations you made, and to keep from apologising to a writer who is providing free content for you to enjoy. On a site you’ve enjoyed free content on for years.

It’s much better to just apologise, or drop it, after you’ve dug a hole this deep.
