Timothy DeFoggiNEBRASKA – Timothy DeFoggi, the former acting director of cyber security at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, was convicted of engaging in a child exploitation enterprise.

DeFoggi, the 56-year-old known online as PTasseater, fuckchrist, kinky_cpl and slutcpl, was the sixth person convicted as part of an ongoing investigation that targeted three child porn websites being run by a single administrator, 31-year-old Aaron McGrath.

McGrath and his members felt that because the websites were being operated and visited anonymously through TOR, they were safe from identification. They found out how wrong they were after the FBI initiated “Operation Torpedo” in 2012. This program scoured TOR websites to determine if they were related to illegal activity.

Federal investigators eventually found McGrath’s child porn sites and began monitoring them. At one point the FBI finally seized one of the sites, PedoBook, but left it up and running for several weeks gathering info from all who visited it. They did this using a variety of techniques – including installing malware on visiting member’s computers.

By time they were done, investigators had enough info to identify and indict two dozen people, including DeFoggi. When agents arrived at DeFoggi’s home, they found him in the process of downloading a child porn video from a Tor website called Onion Pedo Video Archive.

During his trial, prosecutors were able to show a federal jury that DeFoggi registered as a website member on March 2, 2012, and remained active on the site until the FBI took it down on Dec. 8, 2012.

According to their evidence, DeFoggi accessed child pornography, solicited child pornography from other members, and exchanged private messages with other members where he expressed an interest in the violent rape and murder of children.

He even went as far as to suggest meeting up with a another member so they could fulfill their desire to violently rape and murder children.

It only took the jury four days to come back with their verdict – Defoggi was found guilty of engaging in a child exploitation enterprise, conspiracy to advertise and distribute child pornography, and accessing a computer with intent to view child pornography.

His sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 7, 2014.
