The incident happened just after 9 p.m. after police responded to a Wendy’s restaurant where there was reportedly a man with a gun robbing the restaurant.
When police arrived, they engaged 32-year-old Cortez Washington inside the building and ended up firing at least 30 shots after Washington fired a handgun at the officers. Washington was hit multiple times and died after stumbling into the parking lot. Dion, a 38-year-old sound mixer who was holding a microphone, was also hit by gunfire and collapsed inside the building.
After the shooting, an officer can be heard on police audio reporting: “We have one of the ‘Cops’ guys has been hit by gunfire; we need a squad here now.” Shortly after, a man says: “We’ve got a ‘Cops’ cameraman hit, white male, he’s not conscious, he’s slightly breathing.”
It’s now being reported that Dion has died. It has also been revealed that Dion was shot by a police officer. Turns out the suspect, a parolee from Kansas, was carrying an Airsoft pistol.
“We have a lot of ground to cover here tonight and officers will continue the investigation throughout the night,” Deputy Chief Dave Baker said in a statement. More details are expected to be revealed during a 2:30 p.m. conference (which is about to start).
In a statement, Langley Productions said:
“We are deeply saddened and shocked by this tragedy and our main concern is helping his family in any way we can. Bryce Dion was a long term member of the Cops team and a very talented and dedicated person. We mourn his passing. An investigation is ongoing and we are cooperating with local authorities.”Tags: Bryce Dion, cops, Crime, Nebraska, Shooting
