thugbabyOMAHA, NE – A Nebraska infant who gained fame in a viral video in which he swore, flipped the bird to the camera and repeated a string of vulgarities has been taken into protective custody, Omaha police announced on Wednesday. Three other children were also removed from the home, according to a post on the department’s Facebook page.

The child, wearing a diaper,  is told to repeat a number of obscenities and racial slurs by the adults taking the video. The infant, who is black, is shown knocking over a chair and at times taunts the adults back, calling one of them a bitch and telling her to shut up. The adults are heard laughing and encouraging him to keep going.

Though the conduct is disgusting, that didn’t stop the baby’s mother, 16-year-old Ennisha  Devers, from speaking out in defense of her child-rearing skills and taking up for her two-year-old son, after claiming that her brother shot the video-while she was in another room.

“He had a clean diaper, the house was clean and like they said, kids curse, every kid does it,” Devers said. “He’s a smart little boy. All that cussing that he did, he doesn’t do that. Somebody told him to do that. My son doesn’t do that. I don’t allow it.”

The police union in Omaha, Nebraska, posted the video on its website as an example of what it labeled the “cycle of violence and thuggery” that’s challenging the community. Although there isn’t anything illegal that occurs in the clip, the department said that the Nebraska Child Protective Services unit  found ‘safety concerns,’ leading to the baby and three other children being taken from the home.

The union was blasted by the ACLU for posting the video, along with a number of complaints posted online from outraged residents and out-of-staters, who claim that sharing the clip antagonizes the city’s minority communities. Union president John Wells called the video, “disturbing” and “offensive.” Before trying to do a little damage control.

“The focus here isn’t on any particular ethnic group. The focus here is on the troubling behavior towards this child,” Wells told reporters. “This behavior is going to potentially lead this child down a path that is completely unhealthy.” Wells said one of the adults mentions a local street gang in the video, and that the clip had been taken from a local thug’s Facebook page.

Willie Hamilton, president of the community activist group Black Men United, said the union crossed a line by posting the video. “For them to take a video out of context — a 2-year-old who doesn’t have the brain capacity to know what’s going on — and to say that this child, because two adults acted inappropriately, is going to end up in a life of crime is totally inappropriate,” Hamilton said.

Wells told reporters that the union has turned the video over to the department’s child victim unit, which will work with child-welfare agencies to investigate the circumstances. There was no word on Friday as to the placement of the toddler or the other children removed from Devers’ custody.
