Sida OsmanFORT WORTH, TX — The 13-year-old who used a bowling ball to kill a 5-year-old boy pleaded guilty to capital murder this morning in exchange for 23 years behind bars.

The trial for the unidentified teen, now 14-years-old, was scheduled to start this morning, but prosecutors were able to reach a deal with the teen’s lawyers.

Back in June, Sida Oswan went missing after going out to ride his bike. Within 24 hours, his dead body was discovered inside a fenced backyard of a vacant house. A day later, the teen was arrested on suspicion of the boy’s murder.

He was identified after two teens told police that they found the suspect crying and that he took them to see Sida’s body while admitting that he’d killed the boy. After he was taken into custody, it was revealed that the teen used a bowling ball to strike Sida in the head multiple times.

The teen told police that he was angry with Sida because the boy kept “pestering” him about taking him to the store. So he took the boy in the backyard of the vacant home and struck him in the head with the bowling ball. After Sida fell to the ground, the teen said that he straddled Sida and struck him in the head again, “similar to a football player spiking a football,” crushing the little boy’s skull.

The teen was not eligible to be certified as an adult because of his young age, but prosecutors asked the grand jury to let them seek “determinate sentencing” against the teen, which would expand the punishment range the teen would face if convicted. The grand jury allowed it.

With the new sentencing guidelines in place, the teen faced up to 40 years behind bars. As part of the plea agreement, the teen was sentenced to 23 years and can be transferred to an adult prison after his 16th birthday.

The teen did make a statement in court at the conclusion of the hearing. As he stood crying, he faced the the courtroom gallery and said, “I just want the family to know I”m sorry.”
