Man Killed After Being Pulled Into Asphalt Grinder

October 11, 2013 at 11:10 am by

grinderCORONA, CA – A 34-year-old man died an unbelievably horrible death earlier this month after he became entangled in a conveyor belt and was pulled into a machine that crushes asphalt.

Rolando Anaya was working at an asphalt production plant when the poor guy got caught up in the conveyor belt of a mobile asphalt crusher, a machine that makes crushed aggregate used in road construction.

“The laborer was working near a conveyor belt underneath an asphalt grinder and got caught on the conveyor belt and pulled into the grinder,” said Kathleen Hennessey of Cal-OSHA.

OSHA inspectors went out to the plant to check things out, then later closed it down until certain conditions are fixed. “I don’t know the specific conditions, but it appears there are more than one,” said Hennessey.

It’s been a while since we’ve posted a workplace death, but now we can add being crushed in a mobile asphalt grinder to horrifying ways to die while on the job, including being cooked to death in an industrial tuna steamer, dying from an exploding beer keg, falling into a wood chipper, dying in a manure pit, being pressed in an industrial paper rolling machine, cooking in an industrial dryer, suffocating in a pile of pinto beans, drowning in a vat of boiling chocolate, and falling into an industrial meat grinder.

My horrible workplace death will be caused by my head exploding, throwing brains all over my office if I answer one more fuckin stupid question from a customer. I am thinking it could happen any sec now……

  • Evan

so many people featured on this site need to be asphalt grinder fodder. shame Rolando had to get it instead of them.

  • Texas Ranger

Ok, I’ll give you a warning this time. But next time I’m writing you a citation.

  • Mr.CustodialArts

An asphalt grinder is a pretty good analogy for how migrant laborers are used in the U.S.

  • Mr.CustodialArts

I have a feeling you’d have to translate that in order for him to understand…VAYA CON DIOS, Senor Anaya!

  • Evan

no it’s the Integrate-A-Migrant worker program, for Highways.

  • Evan

LMAO. Now listen we need to get a system in place, that determines whether featured creatures go to the Grinder or to the Crash Dummy lab.

  • Lena60

    whose fault was it?I don’t know… asphalt.

  • Buffettgirl

Well – it’s one way to get out of the daily grind…

This guy is really into his work…but the daily grind finally got to him. Let me convey my condolences, the family must be torn up about this, what a crushing blow. Ok, ok, I’ll stop. This is horrible, and sad.

  • Lena60

    Thank you Jessica.

  • disqus_pEkimK10Dw

This is for all of you assh@$%s that find this amusing & can make jokes out of it he happens to be part of my family & he left 2 small children behind not to mention it was a horrific way to die I hope this never happens to any of your family members because I’m sure you wouldn’t want some Ignorant mother fuc#@r cracking jokes about it. This is for CT & that cunt Jessica Stewart

  • Dre Mosley

I just looked up some Youtube videos of asphalt grinders in action. Jesus Christ, this man was probably nothing but sauce.

  • McDanel_1771

Yeah, his ethnicity wasn’t any surprise, considering what a nasty dangerous job he was doing.

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Sorry that your family member passed on.
Having said that, your use of profanities toward the regular people here isn’t welcomed.

As for your issues with us… There’s a horribly simple way for this to not happen. Don’t troll for sympathy online.
We don’t need to apologize to some emo that’s looking to be able beat their breast & wail publicly.

  • Anaya Family

its sad to see how ignorant people are. We are not trolling around our family tragedy this was a horrible incident and that how it got online. But like my family said if you don’t have anything nice to say don’t say anything at all. life is CARMA!!! since you apparently don’t have life you have make a joke about everybody tragedies. I really hope that the day your family has a tragedy you get online and make the same kind of stupid comments about it like you have with my family and other family!!! And just so you know he was not illegal he was an American citizen. And he was just braver and stronger to be able to handle this kind of job that apparently you are not able to do. well I have better things to do than waste my time with people like you!!! .

  • https://www.facebook.com/sunny.sweet.526 Sunny Sweet

Yet another horrific way to die. And another reason I love my job. No large grindy industrial machines.

  • Elizabeth McCarthy

Who says I couldn’t do it? And it’s Karma. With a K. Run along now, cuz. You have better things to do. I totally don’t believe any self-respecting member of that poor man’s family would come on the DD and go nuts like you have. Be gone!

  • https://www.facebook.com/Dinah.Mite Mimi McCartney

    Yikes!

  • LeaveMeBe

I’m sorry. I tried real hard to figure out what you meant. But I can’t. Did you leave a word out?

  • LeaveMeBe

    Did you miss me?

  • Texas Ranger

    Where’d ya go?

  • Texas Ranger

    when did you become un-unemployed?

  • Nick

Man, I seriously thought a wood chipper would be bad, I had never seen this piece of machinery. Regardless of what OSHA has to say people who do this kind of work for a living after awhile become over confident in what they are doing and forget to take extra precautions when working around that type of equipment.. and well this is the end result. what a tragedy, most people I think deserve what they get when not paying attention; this case could be any of us and one of those ways that just make you cringe to think about.

  • malq

This man was weak. Obviously a homosexual.

  • malq

Oh man that was so bad it was good.

  • malq

I hope none of my family members fall in an asphalt grinder too for the sole reason that it would mean my kin is not smart enough to stay away from fucking around with conveyers that suck you in, leading to the jaws of death. Yours obviously have some evolving to do. I can tell by your post you have a long way to go. Good luck with that screen name too. Your cat shit on your keyboard?

  • malq

Dude, would you be jacking around under a conveyor belt that leads to an asphalt grinder? No. You cant fix people like that.

  • Mr.CustodialArts

Sorry your loved one got Fargo’d, but this isn’t people, this is the internet, where compassion and empathy come to die.

  • VenusDoom3

Uh, yeah… I think you’re on the wrong site. Sometimes, the way people far removed from tragedy deal with it is by joking about it. It’s kind of this site’s MO.

That said, I’m truly sorry for your loss.

  • SillyCynic

People do actions that are dangerous all the time. The more you do them, the more complacent you (the majority) get.

    Complacency leads to accidents.

  • FrikkenFrak

Jeez. How really, really awful. For the sake of him and his family, I can only hope that it all happened very, very quickly. The alternative is just to horrible to imagine.

Here’s an awful workplace death scenario for you, Morbid. Going back many, many years here…
A young guy (I think he was 22 or 23) that I knew rather well was working in a machine shop. He was working with a lathe particular day. The way it was explained to me, he was leaning over the work and his shirt collar got caught in the machine. It pulled him down and his head was forced into the spindle. It drilled directly into his skull. He didn’t survive.

    (to get the general idea)…

    Ouchie :-(

  • captaingrumpy

My comment sometimes comes up as “Authorization needed to post comment”. I have contacted them but they don’t know or don’t want to tell me anything.

  • captaingrumpy

So why read the comments ?????

  • captaingrumpy

There would have to be safety rules in place like turning off machine whilst tinkering. But some people ignore this , they feel they don’t need to be told.

  • LeaveMeBe

    :(

  • Andrea Pizzuto

My fiancé works a cnc lathe, one of his co-workers got his shirt sleeve caught and lost three fingers and some of his arm meat. It’s dangerous.

  • Andrea Pizzuto

I hope it was quick, for his sake. Condolences. That said, conveyor belts that ultimately lead to grinding, crushing machinery meant to break up asphalt is probably something to be safety conscious around.

  • Nick

personally no I wouldn’t, then again I refuse to use table saws as well, though many other people out there do this type of work and from what I read they haven’t made it clear exactly how the accident happened, but as SillyCynic even put it people just become complacent. I was just simply trying point out the fact this isn’t typical idiots decapitating themselves after a bad trip or other stupid shit you read about, this is a tragedy and a risk for those who work in this industry and all i said was to those individuals to keep an eye out.

  • Lena60

A few years back on the show I survived, Some people got killed /or maimed when a belt broke on an escalator. It was moving 35 mph and ripping off limps. I never liked escalators as a child, I felt those things could eat me by grinding me up in their escalator like teeth. I see online there is several cases of this happening.

  • Lena60

    It figures… * shakes head*

  • Buffettgirl

How is it ignorant? Had you had nothing to do with this horrific situation it would impact you not at all and more than likely, had you heard about it you would make some joke in the vein of dark humor as well, it’s human nature. Before you fly off the handle and get all bunged up, think about it. Have you ever cracked a joke about something YOU saw in the news? Hmm, thought so, you are JUST as guilty as you claim we are, just not regarding this particular situation. That aside, why are you even on the internet at a time like this? I’d be grieving for my family member and the LAST place I would be would be here, or any other website…

  • Heather_Habilatory

Yet one more reason to take the stairs!

  • Heather_Habilatory

My second cousin fell into a sugar beet auger. Another cousin got hit by a train. My uncle fell off a roof. (The roof and auger accidents happened at the same exact plant… and the train was carrying sugar beets…. We stay the hell away from that sugar company!) If this site had been around in, say, 1982, 1995 and 2002, I bet they would have written about these incidents. And I’d have not read the articles, and especially not the comments, being that I have more than two operational brain cells.

Crazy shit happens to everyone. Your family is NOT that special in this regard. Grieve elsewhere. And don’t be a fuckhole.

  • Heather_Habilatory

You are trolling. Do you come to this site regularly? Nope. So, you’re wandering around the internet, looking for stories about your dead relative, and crying on the comment sections.

It’s spelled KARMA. You want to invoke the wrath of the universe on us, you’d BETTER spell it correctly!

  • Lena60

I usually do Heather when given that choice.

  • Andrea Pizzuto

I’m STILL nervous on escalators, worried that my clothing will get caught when I’m stepping off. I avoid escalators like the plague. I also carry posies in my pocket.

  • Lena60

Lmao @ carrying posies in your pocket :)
