GREENWOOD, SC - A mother has been arrested after her bruised 4-year-old, found sitting on a neighbor’s porch, told police his mother beat him and that she didn’t want him.
Police were called to the home after a woman who lived there found the little boy sitting on her porch with bruises on his face. When she asked him where his mother was, he said, “She don’t want me anymore.”
The police report said officers arrived and found the boy had bruises on his face, dry blood coming from his nose, and a large bruise from a belt under his shirt that appeared to be a few days old. When police asked the boy how he received his injuries, he told them that his “momma hit me with a belt.”
The woman and another neighbor told police that they’d seen the boy around the neighborhood before and that he was often unsupervised. They also said they’d seen his mother hit him and that she yelled at him a lot.
After an hour on the scene in which no one came to find out where they boy was, police went to his home and found the boy’s mother, 23-year-old Shelby Briley, sleeping. They woke her up and she told them she’d taken some prescription medicine the night before. Police counted her pills and found there were several more pills missing than the recommended dose allowed.
The entire time police spoke with Briley, they say she never once inquired about her son. Briley was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.
