The special needs toddler and his four siblings, two 9-year-old boys, and two girls, ages 6 and 7, were being cared for at the babysitter’s house Sunday morning when three adult pit bulls began fighting. The dogs began attacking the toddler when he somehow got in the middle of the melee.
The 28-year-old babysitter tried to get the dogs off the boy, but was also attacked and suffered bites to her arms and legs. The toddler was later declared dead at the hospital while the babysitter underwent surgery for her injuries. She’s currently listed in stable condition. No one else was injured.
Police say the babysitter could face charges, but only if it turns out the boy’s death was anything but an accident. Gilbert police detectives were waiting on warrants to enter the sitter’s home Sunday afternoon.
“Right now we’re looking at it as a tragic terrible accident, but if the investigators get in there and find something, once detectives are done, there’s always a possibility charges could be filed in this case,” said Gilbert Police Sgt. Jesse Sanger.
The three pit bull mixes are in the custody of animal control officials where they will remain for 10 days under quarantine. A fourth dog, a hound, was not involved in the incident and not seized by authorities. Neighbors say they’ve never encountered any problems with the dogs before.Tags: Arizona, babysitter, Crime, pit bull, When Animals Attack
