Phoenix, AZ - A daycare owner has been arrested after she admitted to choking a 6-year-old girl in her care, and possibly abusing a baby with pillows.
According to the probable cause statement, when a mom arrived at 36-year-old Shan Marie McDonald’s daycare to pick up her two daughters, ages 1 and 5, she found her baby on the couch with a busted lip and unable to open her eyes. The baby was taken to the hospital where she was treated for various injuries, including bruises on her neck, shoulders, face and thighs.
When the 5-year-old was interviewed, she said she didn’t know what happened to her baby sister but did know what happened to a 6-year-old girl who was also at the daycare. According to her, she saw McDonald choke the girl because she couldn’t find her shoes.
The mother of the 6-year-old had also noticed her daughter was sporting injuries when she picked her up and had taken some pictures of marks on her throat and scratches on her forehead. The 6-year-old told police that McDonald had beat her and squeezed her neck. She also said that at one point during the day, she pretended to be asleep when she heard McDonald beating the 1-year-old with pillows.
McDonald was interviewed by police and denied harming any of the children in her care. She claimed she wasn’t even there when the children were picked up because she was at a doctor’s appointment. Her story crumbled to pieces when her 17-year-old assistant told police that wasn’t true at all. She said that when the mothers came to pick up their children, McDonald was hiding in her bedroom.
It wasn’t until a second interview with McDonald that she finally admitted she’d gotten angry with the 6-year-old girl and choked her. She still denied harming the 1-year-old and claimed she does not know what happened to her. Shan Marie McDonald was arrested and charged with two felony counts of child abuse and one count of aggravated assault.Tags: Arizona, Beating, Child Abuse, choking, Crime, daycare, pillow, Shan Marie McDonald
