Berne, NY - A 50-year-old New York man died the other day after a booby trap he’d placed to protect some pot plants turned his ass into a human Pez dispenser.
Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple said Daniel Ricketts was driving an ATV in the backyard of his property around 2:30 p.m. Saturday when he ran into a heavy gauge wire that had been placed at neck height.
The heavy gauge wire was one of several booby traps Ricketts had set up to protect four marijuana plants he planted on his property. Ricketts was nearly decapitated by the wire and died after being thrown from his ATV. Apple says alcohol may have been a factor in the accident.
Police found several other traps Ricketts had placed to protect his sweat leaf, including a barbed wire trap and a leg trap similar to those used to trap coyotes. The marijuana plants were removed from the property on Saturday, but so far there have been no arrests.
Sheriff Apple said it’s common for people to use the rural hills in the area to grow pot. “They go up there and they’ll grow marijuana on a lot of the state lands. Fortunately hikers, people out and about, neighbors will call us and they’ll tell us,” he said.
He also said that it is not uncommon for those who farm legal crops to set up traps to stop all-terrain vehicles from trespassing on their property and destroying their fields. ”There’s a lot of four-wheelers and a lot of dirt bikers up in the mountains of Albany County,” Apple said. “These kids, not that we condone it, they do run all over the place with their four wheelers.”
I think the last time we featured wire traps on Dreamin’ Demon was back in 2012, when 19-year-old Benjamin Rutkowski and 21-year-old Kai Christensen were accused of setting up a series of booby traps along a popular hiking trail in Utah.Tags: Accident, Crime, Daniel Ricketts, Decapitation, Drugs, marijuana, New York, trap
