Brenham, TX - A 19-year-old college student died last Saturday after she panicked and swallowed an unknown amount of meth during a traffic stop.
Madeleine Gene Richardson was in a car that got pulled over for speeding at 2:45 p.m. Friday on U.S. 290 near Brenham. During the stop. officers found drug paraphernalia and small amount of marijuana. Richardson and the driver, 20-year-old Gary Keife, were charged with a misdemanor while a third female passenger was released.
By time police arrived at the Washington County Jail, Richardson wasn’t doing so well. She looked ill and had started to shake. “They asked what she took, and she admitted to swallowing a baggie of meth,” said Chief Deputy Jay Petrash of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
An ambulance was called and Richardson was rushed to Scott & White Hospital-Brenham. She was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. Saturday. The sheriff’s office reported the death to the Texas Rangers, which by law investigates all fatalities that occur while someone is in custody.
Richardson was not searched at the traffic stop, as no female officer was present, but her bag was removed and she was placed in handcuffs. Police are pretty sure she swallowed the meth before the driver pulled over, as it took the driver a mile to do so.
“We’re never going to know why she swallowed it (methamphetamine),” Petrash said. “It’s just tragic.”
Actually, I’m curious as to what they third female passenger has to say, if anything at all. Getting busted with meth in Texas is no joke, depending on the amount, so I understand panicking if you think you are about to get caught with some.
But she’s a white college chick with no criminal history. Unless she was holding a mighty fat sack, say 200 to 400 grams, even in Texas she was probably only facing some legal woes resulting from a plea deal – and some shame from her family. Hell, I’ll take that over dying in handcuffs.
I’m admittedly liberal when it comes to recreational drug use, so I think it’s a shame Richardson was being taken to jail for paraphernalia in the first place. However, if you’re going to mess around with any illegal substances, it would behoove you to educate yourself on the laws against them and how much of it can kill you.
