Teen Dies In Police Custody After She Swallowed Meth During Traffic StopBrenham, TX - A 19-year-old college student died last Saturday after she panicked and swallowed an unknown amount of meth during a traffic stop.

Madeleine Gene Richardson was in a car that got pulled over for speeding at 2:45 p.m. Friday on U.S. 290 near Brenham. During the stop. officers found drug paraphernalia and small amount of marijuana. Richardson and the driver, 20-year-old Gary Keife, were charged with a misdemanor while a third female passenger was released.

By time police arrived at the Washington County Jail, Richardson wasn’t doing so well. She looked ill and had started to shake. “They asked what she took, and she admitted to swallowing a baggie of meth,” said Chief Deputy Jay Petrash of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

An ambulance was called and Richardson was rushed to Scott & White Hospital-Brenham. She was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. Saturday. The sheriff’s office reported the death to the Texas Rangers, which by law investigates all fatalities that occur while someone is in custody.

Richardson was not searched at the traffic stop, as no female officer was present, but her bag was removed and she was placed in handcuffs. Police are pretty sure she swallowed the meth before the driver pulled over, as it took the driver a mile to do so.

“We’re never going to know why she swallowed it (methamphetamine),” Petrash said. “It’s just tragic.”

Actually, I’m curious as to what they third female passenger has to say, if anything at all. Getting busted with meth in Texas is no joke, depending on the amount, so I understand panicking if you think you are about to get caught with some.

But she’s a white college chick with no criminal history. Unless she was holding a mighty fat sack, say 200 to 400 grams, even in Texas she was probably only facing some legal woes resulting from a plea deal – and some shame from her family. Hell, I’ll take that over dying in handcuffs.

I’m admittedly liberal when it comes to recreational drug use, so I think it’s a shame Richardson was being taken to jail for paraphernalia in the first place. However, if you’re going to mess around with any illegal substances, it would behoove you to educate yourself on the laws against them and how much of it can kill you.

Um call me crazy, but I’m guessing she didn’t want to go to jail. Very sad story. But seeing how rapidly people’s lives deteriorate after starting meth, it was only a matter of time before something tragic happened.

  • James Orefice

“We will never know why she swallowed it” ???? And they investigate crimes???!! Wow.

  • Shade

I’ll bet money the douche bag dude driving begged and pleaded and maybe even lied to her and convinced her to swallow it so that HE wouldn’t get caught with it.

  • Athena

We need treatment-based sentencing. Now. Well, 30 years ago, really. But better late than never.

Exactly. Lindsey Lohan has proved over and over and over and over that going to rehab instead of jail works.

When people are put into rehab (or especially just detox) for short stints it almost never works. The people who are successful are usually in rehab or houses for long periods of time. It’s possible it might work if it was done right but I don’t think people want to pay for it.

    :(what a waste

  • Texas Ranger

True, but in a way we do pay for it. Whether they are in a “rehab” or a “rehab” called prison. From my experience…if the person don’t want to quit, don’t matter where you stick-em.

  • Pyncky

My niece, at 25 years of age, was selling some of her mother’s 40mg Oxycontin at at storage unit in Indianapolis. A police car cruised the area and she panicked and swallowed the 10 pills that she had with her. They wound up turning off the life support after 3 days of her being brain dead. (You might argue that she was already brain dead for swallowing the pills). Her mother, my sister, gave her the pills and asked her to sell them. She left behind a two year old daughter. As far as I am concerned my sister killed her. There were no charges filed and my sister got away with it. She is now raising her grandchild. I wonder how old she will be before she is selling pills on the school yard. I have had no contact with my sister since and only get news from an other sister who still talks to her.

What really hit me is that I take the same dosage of Oxy myself. I do not sell mine since I actually need them due to spinal injuries, but I took ten of them out of the bottle and sat and stared at them shaking and thinking how fragile life is.

  • Spifftastic

There are a few that do care (I know it’s few but I swear they exist) and just can’t drag their asses out of it. Saves us money if we help stop those few from reoffending and make them employable by keeping them in rehab for longer periods of time.

  • sugarpie

Listen, if they really want to know why she swallowed, all they need to do is get the Long Island Medium on the case. Theresa will get the bottom of it.

  • Andyman

lol. Have they not called you to investigate yet??? :-)

  • Buffettgirl

I’m so sorry for your loss…

  • Buffettgirl

Something about swallowing a baggie of meth just seems not smart to me… No matter WHAT kind of trouble I’d face, I would never, ever take that shit… Of course, having Adult Onset ADD means that shit doesn’t even work for me the way it does for “normal” people. It makes it hard for me to understand why people use it and/or get addicted to it. I understand addiction, just not to stuff like Cocaine, Meth, Vicodin and other substances like that. All it does is make me sick to my stomach and a tiny bit jitty…

  • Texas Ranger

Yeah, better to be addicted to alcohol, because drugs is bad…..

  • Kittyskyfish

    I love u man.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mickey.holman Mickey Holman

It would behoove these dumb asses not to do drugs in the first place!

  • Kittyskyfish

What a big mistake she made and I feel sorry for what happened to her. It really sucks that she felt the only way to save herself from the law was to dispose the drugs by taking them. I was going to say “in her body” but then Evan and Texas Ranger handled that logic quite nicely.

  • Buffettgirl

I’m not – but I get your point! I’m NOT saying it’s evil or bad or whatever, I’m saying that I don’t comprehend it because of the way it makes me feel. I smoke pot everyday, so I’m NOT anti-drugs per se. Like I said I get addiction, I also smoke cigarettes, just not an addiction to these types of drugs is all. ;P

  • Athena

It’s not about what works. It’s about basic principle. No one should be facing incarceration for simply getting high.

  • Parrot Toes

This girl should be used in the “Faces of Meth” campaign. Use this photo, all pretty and cute, then dig her up in 6 months, maybe a year, and take another not-so-cute photo.

  • Texas Ranger

Agreed. Getting drunk isn’t against the law per se, but getting drunk and beating up the kids or wife or driving is….so usually the ‘getting high” has led to something else that requires incarceration. I’m with ya Athena in principle…but your argument does not hold water. Whores are incarcerated….not for fucking…but for charging a fair market value for it, that’s the rub. Can you innocently “get drunk”, “get high” or fuck? I don’t think so.

  • Chris Willis

It’s amazing what we do in America…In order to stop people from fucking up thier lives with drugs, we arrest them and fuck up their lives.

  • Texas Ranger

Of course. I had to check and make sure her Vag wasn’t loaded.

Its illegal. Break the law, suffer the consequences. unfortunate?

Their choices fuck up their lives.

  • mean birch

You mean Illegal. ? Addictions are bad, I’ve got a few… but breaking the law is a choice.

  • Rayne Young

What a shame…what you do is you empty the contents on the floor of the car and spread it out with your foot so it’s not visible. Then as inconspicuously as you can swallow the empty baggie. Not that I’ve ever been in this situation..

  • Texas Ranger

No, I don’t mean illegal. You just giving an insight to my train of thought from 15-35.

  • Parrot Toes

Go ahead down-voters. D-V me. I thrive off that shit!

  • Athena

I innocently get drunk, get high and fuck all the time, so I don’t know what you mean.

    Whores shouldn’t be incarcerated either.

  • Athena

You’re missing the point, my dear Birch.

It’s not that no consequences should be suffered (well, I don’t think there should be consequences for getting high other than the toll it may take on your mind or body). It’s about the consequences making sense.

Speeding contributes to thousands of traffic fatalities annually. Should you be thrown in jail for going 10 over? Are you seeing my point?

Fines, community service and treatment are sensible consequences for drug possession. Incarceration is not.

  • Athena

    Only because you asked…

  • Eliza Berntsen

The only reason she went there was to avoid jail and to get more publicity. She has never gone in because she actually felt that she needs rehab.

  • Texas Ranger

I think I love you Athena.

  • brandi

Sorry, but not all of us have mammoth sizes vaginas like that chick. She has obviously used a bazooka for a dildo so hiding a revolver was no biggie for her.

  • mean birch

No precious, you see, I do get your point. And i agree. Gulp. the consequences don’t make sense, however there still are consequences to your choices, regardless if they make sense or not.

  • Parrot Toes

You are so giving…… Also, I return favours :D

  • 18th40

Well you both knew I’d help.

  • 18th40

And yet my phone never rings.

  • Athena

    Okay, quick side story…

Back when I was in high school, I was actively involved in debate, as you may have noticed me mention before. One year, I was owning my events, so I wanted to try something new. Student Congress looked interesting.

My bill? Why, to legalize prostitution, of course. I created this flawless bill that established all the necessary regulatory oversight as well as a tax schedule that created enough revenue to, in part, fund a program for individuals looking to get out of the business, as well as programs subsidizing drug and STD testing. I mean, this thing was legislative gold.

I take it to Congress and argue my case with much more fluidity and eloquence than I’ve ever used podcasting, and it’s looking like I’m going to get this thing to pass.

UNTIL… Some self-righteous little prude stands up during the pre-vote questioning and says, “Aren’t you concerned about what this will do to our children? Do you want your daughter aspiring to be a street walker when she grows up?” Yes, the bitch said “street walker”. She was kind of dressed like it was the 1800s, too.

With righteous indignation, my brows furrow and I glare incredulously. “Yeah,” I almost growl, “because you know so many little girls who currently aspire to be strippers.”

I learned an important lesson that day. Face utter stupidity with a honey tongue. My sarcasm-laden rebuttal made people hate me and lost me the vote. I went back to cross-ex where verbal evisceration was encouraged. :P

  • Athena

    Whose fault is that?

  • 18th40

Damn. Do you always have to be that fast ?

  • Athena

    <3

My mistake. Then, I suppose the real question is: Do you think Captain Obvious wears a colonial-style hat, or something more like a modern cruise ship captain? ;)

  • Athena

    I live here.

  • Texas Ranger

That’s a lesson well learned, sadly most folks don’t get the honey tongued part.
hence the ” I love you (name here)”….fuckin got me outta more female-related shit than I can count I tell ya.

  • Athena

For a second, there, I thought you were cheapening the compliment you just paid me. But just when I was about to retract my “like”, I noticed that you said “I think,” first… so it must be true.

  • Texas Ranger

yeah, I should have been a lawyer…in my opinion.

  • Athena

    I should’ve been a lawyer, too… in 18th40′s opinion.

  • Texas Ranger

We should debate for money sometime.

  • Athena

Money? I make plenty. We should make it interesting.

  • Texas Ranger

  • Whisper Wing

This pretty much exact same thing happened to my BFFs nephew 2 years ago
He was in trouble as a teen but had gotten his shit together and was working at a good job etc
Went out with buddys and they got pulled over and so his BFF wouldnt be arrested he swallowed some coke
Went home to bed and his mom tried banging on his bedroom door a few times and he wasn’t answering and it was locked
Her brother went over kicked it open and he was dead
His bff went on guilt trip and attempted suicide

  • The_Shadow_Knows

My brother actually ate a baggie of meth a few years back because he THOUGHT the police were on their way (they weren’t). He spent three days awake, hallucinating that people were walking up and down his stairs and insisting that the SWAT team was shining a spotlight in his windows. Meth is bad news.

  • http://www.facebook.com/KeepThemOnTheRadar Kara Conner

Sometimes I have a feeling I can do crystal meth, then I think mmmh, better not.

  • Pmilz

If the fucking consequences of being busted with illicit substances wasn’t so ridiculous, things like this wouldn’t happen. People risk their life to avoid being branded the rest of their lives as a criminal and not being able to get a job or apartment because of it…The system failed this woman because she knew that she was better off to risk dying from swallowing it rather than deal with the consequences. It’s totally fucked…

  • Wolf_of_Mars

I’d be willing to bet you went “Nunning” when you were younger…

  • Baeta_Mordred

To be honest I’ve been pulled over a couple times but I have never had an officer check my car. Do the cops do searches randomly or do they need a reason (erratic driving, smell in the car etc.)? I remember when I was 15 a cop stopped my dad and I for a license plate being expired and they claimed they smelled alcohol in the car. My father hadn’t drank in 20 years and I had emptied a can of hair spray on my hair to get a rad spiky look. When I told the officer it was my hair spray he got embarrassed and let us go.

  • Texas Ranger

Yep. Just finished the “How to be a Hipster for Dummies” and got my Peruvian knit hat and Buddy Holley Glasses ready to go, gotta find me some stupid looking shoes and get a really bad haircut….THEN, I’ll be ready for Seattle.

  • Texas Ranger

No, I’m not Catholic….but it sounds like fun!

  • MilfOf2

Is it wrong to start a slow clap?

  • Tenbux

They require either a warrant or probable cause to search your vehicle. Just saying “Say, I smell something” isn’t probable cause.

For them to get arrested during a traffic stop for drug stuff, it was either in plain sight or the driver agreed to let the officer search the vehicle. Or the driver had an outstanding arrest warrant. If the driver did agree to the search, that makes things more tragic since all this could have been avoided by simply saying “I do not consent to any searches”.

  • Chris Willis

Because you’ve never made a bad choice. What happens when someone you work for decides that having the name mean bitch is a good reason to fire you? YOU are correct in one point, it’s THEIR choice, nobody should be threatened with prison because they smoke a joint, crack or meth. Either get them help or leave them to screw up their own life.

  • mean birch

well, good question. but since I run my own business I don’t think I’ll get fired. and dumb-ass, its BIRCH. on the ball CW

  • Wolf_of_Mars

Trust me, Catholic boys would be less likely to engage in this pastime. I only know what it is, never done it… Not Catholic either.

right.. she would have gotten a slap on the wrist.. let that be a Black male with no criminal history with crack– its a go str8 to jail card- The sentencing disparites are staggering.. the DOJ reported whites arer 5 times more likely to get probation and blacks 6 times more likely to get JAIl for the identical crime when both have no priors..

Unfortunately, people who choose to do crack and meth usually fuck up other people’s lives and not just their own. And that’s NOT okay.
